The Rodriguez fitness latest as unavailability issues harm Calvert-Lewin’s FPL output

Southampton 2-0 Everton

  • Goals: James Ward-Prowse (£5.8m), Che Adams (£5.8m)
  • Assists: Danny Ings (£8.5m) x2
  • Red Cards: Lucas Digne (£6.2m)
  • Bonus: Ward-Prowse x3, Ings, Adams x2

Southampton secured a convincing win over a poor Everton side that is perhaps beginning to buckle under the strain of injuries and suspensions.

Goals from James Ward-Prowse (£5.8m) and Che Adams (£5.8m), both set up by the Saints’ most popular Fantasy Premier League (FPL) asset, the 18%-owned Danny Ings (£8.5m), earned the home side a deserved victory.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team comprehensively outplayed the visitors, out-shooting them 12-6 and having three times the number of attempts on target (six to two).

Small wonder, then, that the coach was a happy man post-match:

I think it was overall one of our best performances.

There was nothing positive to be found from an Everton perspective, however.

Toothless Toffees

Much of the pre-match talk, at least in Fantasy circles, revolved around the health of Toffees midfielder James Rodriguez (£8.0m).

In the end, his now-legendary haematoma didn’t keep him from playing, but it might as well have done.

The 38.9%-owned playmaker was a peripheral figure for much of the game. Then again, that was one up on many of the visiting team as Carlo Ancelotti’s side struggled to deal with Southampton’s pressing, organisation and commitment.

The Colombian also seemed to be struggling towards the end of the match, with his manager saying:

I think we have to check in the next few days. He was tired at the end, he felt his muscle a little bit. But I don’t think it’s a big problem.

The most-owned player in FPL, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.7m and 56.8%), had a terrible day. Starved of service, he managed only two penalty area touches and didn’t have a single attempt.

In fact, he touched the ball just 18 times all game. Only one player, Southampton midfielder Ibrahima Diallo (£4.5m), had fewer, with 14. But he was on the pitch for four minutes.

A booking added to his, and his owners’, woes. A decent enough short-term schedule should mean Calvert-Lewin’s one-pointer doesn’t lead to too many sales, although there are other reasons why investment in Everton assets is looking less appealing all in.

In Squad We Can’t Trust

The Merseyside derby dismissal of Richarlison (£7.8m) had an impact on the strength and balance of Ancelotti’s team on the south coast.

The Toffees have not won a single game without the winger in their squad since his move to the north-west and that unwanted record was extended on Sunday.

Alex Iwobi (£5.9m) filled in for the Brazilian and was hooked after 45 unconvincing minutes, while a second start of the season for Gylfi Sigurdsson (£6.9m) lasted 12 minutes longer but wasn’t much better, although the Iceland international did hit the bar with a long-range shot in the first half.

But the real problem came from a hamstring injury that denied the team the experience and expertise of Seamus Coleman (£5.0m) at right-back.

With three other defenders already on the injury list, that meant centre-half Ben Godfrey (£5.0m) shifting across to the flank. The experiment didn’t go well.

Hasenhuttl denied that his team targeted Godfrey:

No, it was a coincidence that we played more on this side. It’s more important that you’re dangerous on every side, flexibility is the key. We lured them a little bit and played through the lines.

But the reality spoke differently, with left-back Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m) finding himself much further forward than team-mate Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m) and creating three chances to the right-back’s nil.

Coleman’s absence also had an impact on Rodriguez, who was forced that much deeper and less central in a vain bid to provide some kind of help for Godfrey.

As if Ancelotti’s defensive problems weren’t already marked, Lucas Digne (£6.2m) dished out some more pain for his boss when he was shown a straight red card for a challenge, part frustration, part spite, on Walker-Peters in the 71st minute.

Hasenhuttl was not happy:

Yes. It was nasty. It looked like he tried to kick him first and then the stamp. It was a clear red card.

And neither was Ancelotti:

The red card was a joke, it was not intentional, for sure it was not violent. Maybe all this talk all week against Pickford, against Richarlison, affected the decision and if so it’s not right, it’s not fair. We will appeal, for sure.

Intentional or not, it ended in a nasty rake down Walker-Peters’ achilles. And unless that appeal succeeds, the 18.7%-owned Digne will not be in league action again until Gameweek 10 at the end of November.

In their current state, Everton can ill afford his absence, although it does throw up the intriguing possibility of budget FPL defender Niels Nkounkou (£4.0m) getting a game or three, with Fabian Delph (£4.9m) another candidate for the role.

But, just six games in, Everton’s squad is down to the bare bones in places and the loss of Digne is another potential short-term blow to Calvert-Lewin, given how much service the full-back provides from the left flank.

Saints Alive

Southampton are considerably less troubled in that department, with the one change to the side on Sunday forced by loanee Theo Walcott (£5.8m) not being eligible to play against his parent club.

Stuart Armstrong (£5.5m) filled in well enough, but it was the strike partnership of Adams and Ings that really caught the eye.

The former scored for the second straight Gameweek and has hauled in three of his last four starts, while Ings continues to show impressive consistency this season.

His first two assists of the campaign meant he’s produced attacking returns in four of the six matches to date.

In terms of value, the pair are ploughing remarkably similar furrows – the more expensive Ings is producing 4.6 points per million (PPM), the cheaper (but less productive) Adams 4.7 PPM.

They were both outshone, however, by midfielder Ward-Prowse, who scored his first goal of the season and took home the maximum bonus award for a double-digit haul.

The Saints’ next six fixtures are fairly favourable and the team as a whole is in a good place, with three clean sheets from their last four unbeaten matches.

That promotes investment in the side from front to back, whereas the opposite looks true for a threadbare-looking Everton squad.

Southampton XI (4-4-2): McCarthy;  Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Vestergaard, Bertrand; Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Armstrong (Diallo 86′), Redmond; Ings, Adams (N’Lundulu 89′).

Everton XI (4-3-3): Pickford; Godfrey, Mina, Keane, Digne; Doucoure (Gordon 58′), Allan, Sigurdsson (Delph 58′); Rodriguez, Iwobi (Bernard 45′), Calvert-Lewin.

I've been planning on wildcarding in GW9 for a while but now I'm really not sure who I would buy. The teams with good fixtures after GW9 include WHU, the Manchester clubs, Palace and others but their teams are looking far from promising atm. Thoughts?

I think whenever you play it at the moment there is a risk it could backfire ALA the gw 3/4 Wildcard. So depends whether you think things will ‘settle down’ or not - if you do then might be best to hold it for a bit longer

Wait for the double in GW 19 than and play it in GW 16

It looks good on paper but the problem with that approach is there are 3GW between WC and the double which in fantasy world is like eternity, so many things can change.

Try including some players you like rather than following the crowd. I've just out KDB back on my team and have Bruno, which not many have in my mini league. Because I like them as fantasy picks. I don't have Salah because I can't stand him as a player, too selfish.

Just do what works for you, to get the most enjoyment out of the game

and dont WC for the sake of it just because that was the plan. If your team needs to change urgently then go for it, otherwise it may end up being a waste

I have had a similar plan - doing mine in the next international break after GW8 - for the fixtures swings you have mentioned but you also need to account for wolves/saints/spurs fixtures taking a turn for the worse (and make up a lot of my team)

Yeah. Trent+Ings >> Chilwell+Kane(C) for a hit. Was bang on the money and Kane is hurting me. My team is better than most my rivals but they keep getting Kane(C) hauls to void all my work (which will happen tonight too). Feel in a strong position now.

Do you see any issue? I keep to underperform for weeks. Bad choices, bad luck...

    McCarthy
    Robbo, James, Dallas
    Grealish, Son, Salah, Rodriguez,
    Kane, DCL, Wilson

    Steer, Bissouma, Lamptey, Mitchell

    0.6 ITB, 2FT

Any ideas here guys? It's rare that I will burn a transfer, but I am relatively happy. I feel exposed without City assets against SHU, but after that fixtures tough. Also no Chelsea or Utd worries me a bit.

    Some thoughts below

    A) Don't worry - burn the transfer.
    B) Rodriguez to Pulisic
    C) Downgrade Wilson to Brewster, upgrade Bissouma and play a 3-5-2
    D) Upgrade Wilson to someone like Ings or Jimi (find funds by downgrading Robbo perhaps)
    E) Upgrade Dallas or Lamptey

    I currently have:

    McCarthy | Martinez
    TAA | Saiss | Dier | Justin | Lascelles
    Salah | Son | Grealish | Podence | Bissouma
    Kane | Ings | DCL

I have 2 FTs and i really wanted to just use 1 and roll 1 for the next few weeks to sort Dier, then Lascelles, then Podence. But Podence is becoming too much to carry isn't he? Does all the right things but then gets hooked early.

Anyone in a similar situation? Should i just cut my losses and go TAA & Podence to PVA/James & Zaha.

I simultaneously feel like i'm not too bad but also in need of a complete reshuffle.

I have Johstone in goal, feel like I have missed the boat on Martinez and wondered if anyone had any strong views on Mendy at Chels?

The fixtures look ok and he has cleaned in both games he has played, a 5m GK for a top 4 side, is he sliding under the radar?

Big dilemma here guys: Kane or not to Kane??

    Martinez
    Saiss - Justin - Kilman - Digne* - Mitchell
    Grealish - Rodriguez - Son - Sterling - Salah
    DCL - Jimenez - Brewster

    A) Digne and Jimenez -> Strujk Kane for -4

    - very week defense ( 3 x 4,0)
    - no money itb to upgrade defense later
    - losing Jimenez before CPL home
    - minus 4

    + Kane in and (C)

    B) Digne -> Chillwell for free

    + ok defense
+ 0,6 itb to upgrade Mitchell/Kilman to WHM defender week after
    + no hit

    - no Kane 🙂

Struijk got hooked after 20 mins and they won the game 3-0 with his replacement. Maybe Bielsa sheds some light in his presser.

      Even Saiss isn't nailed.

That defense is incredibly ropey if you go with A.

Maybe keep DCL but the rest - not for now. I was feeling smug keeping James in my starting lineup when rivals benched him, but it ended up costing me as I lost Klich's 5 points on the bench. I'll keep James for now but don't feel great having him.

Has looked pretty good when I’ve seen him play, don’t really have any pressing issues so Mitchell to Kilman is a possibility.

    Transfer suggestions?

    Martinez
    Robbo - Saiss - Chilwell
    Salah - Son - Barkley - James
    DCL - Jimenez - Werner

    (0.5 in the bank)
(thinking of saving transfer and then doing werner > antonio and jimenez > kane?)

I think Kane will do well next week but I presume you'd have to take a -4 to bring him in and I don't think it's worth that when Jimenez is still returning in most of his games

I'm on 2 FTs, had a stinker of a GW6, yet I can't think of anything worth doing with those transfers. Anyone else feeling the same?

only have 1FT but similar feeling. My team felt like it was in for a mega haul based on form and fixtures (you always know that means the opposite).

it feels the same looking at next week.

Yes. Dier and Podence my two problem areas, with TAA a possible downgrade to free up funds to improve Podence. It's all a bit weird at the moment.

It's incredibly hard to predict. Had I been on a wildcard last week I would have ditched McCarthy, Justin & Wilson and yet they turned out to be the only players who returned for me this week (+Saiss)

what to do with that lot?

    martinez 4.0
    Reguilon saiss justin (mitchel dunne)
    salah son foden barnes (burke)
    kane calvert jimenez

    1 FT 2.8 itb

    A) save free transfer
    B) barnes -> zaha/ rodriguez/ rashford
    C) other suggestion

Right... So this has been the worst start to the season for me since I started. Played my WC in GW5 and although I scored well that week, GW6 has been dismal - I'm wondering if I should be more aggressive and take more risks. Team below. 2FTs. OR 3.5m. 0 ITB. Any advice greatly appreciated!

    Ryan

    Robertson, Chilwell, Semedo

    Salah, Son, Rodriguez, Grealish

    Kane, DCL, Maupay

    Subs: Button, Dallas, Mitchell, Stephens

    Good day!
Have a pretty solid situation for next week, but with 2 FTs, i have to spend at least one, any advice on where?

    Martinez
    TAA/Chilwell/Dallas
    Salah/Son/Pulisic/Grealish
    Wilson/DCL/Jimenez

    Button/Lamptey/Ward/Gordon
    0.5 itb

Maybe just Wilson > Bamford due to form?

How are Soucek owners feeling ? Posting good underlying numbers but yet to get his goal. I'm considering Podence to Soucek for FUL in GW8 but as he'd be a starter for me most weeks im wondering if I'd be better off playing 4 atb instead.

A bit frustrated. I've been playing him as a 4th mid but I'm going to upgrade Reed this week and shift Soucek to a 5th mid. Will inevitably mean some bench points at some point but for now think it's worth it and I'm happy to play him if any of my other attackers are out.

That makes sense, always frustrating to bench points but having players on your bench that are capable of scoring some is surely better than not.

Exactly - at 4.9m it's quite doable and if any of my players gets a knock or has covid then I wouldn't feel too bad benching them for a week and playing Soucek whereas with Reed/Bissouma/other fodder it would feel like a bigger drop off

Guaranteed starter. Passes eye test. Stats are great ignoring lack of returns. Consensus was to avoid WHU until #8 but if these numbers are unfavourable, what happens when the fixtures turn 'good'?

          WHU X3 for me.

Yes, but...he was the obvious 5th midfielder given his restart and preseason form. Antonio widely regarded as one of the most powerful forwards if fit, and look at how well he's done in 6 weeks... 27 points, again from matches where nothing was expected.

Masuaku my likely third. His stats are insane. Watch later for various FFS casts, I believe he'll be mentioned today or tomorrow.

Yes I have an eye on Antonio too, he's a pretty high profile pic in the community for good reason, be waiting for an injury update there although still undecided if/when I will move for him. Re Masuaku, I like him but was a little concerned about him missing out should you move to a different formation, as a result I invested in Coufal last week who has really passed the eye test and numbers also very strong. Not a bad time to be a Hammers fan !

Where are all the Salah at home Mane away prophets now?

It was always completely rubbish to say one is better at home and one is better away.

I'm intrigued by the comparison between them. Mane is putting up the best stats out of all midfielders in terms of minutes/xG, xG non penalty and big chances.

He's getting better quality chances than Salah even though he shoots less frequently. So it's not just that his finishing is better, he's getting better chances which should make them easier to finish.

I don't think there's much between them at all honestly. They'll probably do about the same this season unless Liverpool somehow get a huge amount of penalties.

Also there seem to be transitions in the way Liverpool play: Robertson much more involved than Trent at the moment, and Jota changing things as well. Robbo in particular benefits Mane.

The other weird element is that Mo's finishing has been sharp so far this season, including the offside one this weekend. He's scoring these one-touch goals and brilliant instinctive finishes - he's not as wasteful as last year, he's just getting fewer chances right now.

I still think Salah will outperform him because I think this is his floor and Mane's ceiling. But I think Mane is a good option too.

Meanwhile Mane has been wasteful. If anything, it should result in Mane being even better than Salah this year bar pens.

Mane with 1 less return than Salah with 101 less minutes and a ~38% difference in ownership

i've always been of the opinion that Mane is the better player IRL and Salah the better fantasy option.

if you took away pens, Mane would be the better option, but you can't do that.

And that was weird. Jesus tweeted he'll be back in 5-6 weeks then later apologised and said he meant 2-3 weeks.
Personally I'd avoid City other than Foden (for his price) until they settle at both ends.

Foden's done very well so far and City do better with him on the pitch. However his playtime is theoretically more limited in the 4-2-3-1 than the 4-3-3 so that is in the back of my mind.

Sterling's next 3:- shu, LIV, tot
Pulisic next 3:- bur, SHU, new

        DCL next 2:- new, MUN
        Kane next 2:- BHA, wba
