How Kane, Son and De Bruyne fared in midst of FPL fixture swing

Spurs 2-0 Man City

  • Goals: Son Heung-min (£9.5m), Giovani Lo Celso (£6.9m)
  • Assists: Tanguy Ndombèlé (£5.9m), Harry Kane (£11.0m)
  • Bonus points: Hugo Lloris x3 (£5.5m), Son x2, Eric Dier x1 (£4.9m)

THE TOUGH GETS GOING

Top 10k FPL managers refuse to ditch Kane and Son double-up for Gameweek 9

Tottenham Hotspur’s key attacking assets made significant statements in Gameweek 9 as both Harry Kane (£11.0m) and Son Heung-min (£9.5m) registered attacking returns against Manchester City.

Both players saw interest in their services wane over the international break as Fantasy Premier League managers considering their increasingly tough upcoming fixtures.

But with arguably the hardest of those out of the way, owners of Kane and Son are likely to feel a lot more encouraged to be holding onto the dynamic duo.

As predicted by his most loyal fans, Son was able to expose Manchester City’s high defensive line in key moments on Saturday evening.

He found space behind the Citizens’ back-line as early as the fifth minute after Tanguy Ndombèlé (£5.9m) played an insightful ball over the top.

That made for a 10-point haul for Son, his fifth double-figure Gameweek score of the 2020/21 campaign. Hugely impressive when you consider that he has produced exactly six of these in each of the last four Premier League seasons.

Meanwhile, Kane put in a man-of-the-match, impressing mostly off the ball with his contribution to holding the ball up and easing pressure on his team-mates, who spent most of the game defending against Manchester City’s large share of possession (65.6%).

“I knew if I was going to drop deep the centre-backs were going to follow me and with Stevie and Sonny running in behind, it worked. My duties were mainly, holding up the ball, trying to buy time, especially when you’re under the cosh a bit. Win fouls and bring others into play. The most important thing is we have runners in behind.” – Harry Kane

That enabled Kane to fulfil more of a creator’s role, as we have become used to this season, assisting Giovani Lo Celso (£6.9m) for a 16th attacking return in nine matches.

WHAT ABOUT THE UNDERLYING DATA?

KDB OR NOT DB

Fantasy managers may be experiencing the opposite problem with Manchester City considering they are about to embark on a positive run of games but appear short of go-to attacking assets.

While they recorded their first blank of the season, it was not for lack of trying, as Pep Guardiola’s men dominated possession and the shot count (22 to four).

Kevin De Bruyne (£11.6m) pounced on a loose ball in the box early in the first half, his shot likely to have ended up in the back of the net were it not for an offside Gabriel Jesus (£9.3m) getting in the way.

Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) did actually score after a Jesus knock-down, only to see that ruled out for a handball against City’s number nine.

De Bruyne struck wide from the edge of the box in the 50th minute before Ruben Dias (£5.5m) headed the Belgian’s late free-kick straight at Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) when he really should have scored.

The fact that Burnley, Fulham and West Bromwich Albion are three of Manchester City’s next three opponents is cause to believe that those who came close to attacking returns against Spurs can deliver on their promise in the near future.

The return of Sergio Aguero (£10.3m) to full fitness is also worth considering. An additional option for Guardiola can only improve the credentials of the midfield players on offer, although it also increases the risk of rotation for Jesus.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Reguilón, Dier, Alderweireld (Rodon 81′), Aurier; Højbjerg, Sissoko; Bergwijn (Moura 73′), Ndombèlé (Lo Celso 65′), Son Heung-min; Kane.

Manchester City XI (4-2-3-1): Ederson; Cancelo, Laporte, Dias, Walker; B Silva (Foden 72′), Rodrigo; Torres, De Bruyne, Mahrez (Sterling 72′); Jesus.

I want Salah back. Planned to do just Kane to Vardy (c).
However, who to sell out. I have midfield of KDB, Grealish, Ziyech, Son.

Worse thing is I need to sell Robbo to fund the move, if I don't do KDB to Salah. Crazy to sell KDB before the fixture swing. After last night's showing/points, I think I have to keep Robbo.
    Please help. Thanks.

Did Salah to KDB for long term (avoiding Bruno for the WBA game) so selling KDB is out of the question.
Plan was to do Son + Robbo to Salah + someone (-4) but City game told us Son will be good against top sides, aided by Kane's passes.

Might go without him for now, just doing Kane to Vardy for free.

The key question of the week! It's the knock on effect of the extra mill as well. To do it I'll need to do Robbo to, say, Cancelo. I also fancy Kane to Vardy on fixtures. Is it all worth -8!? All very tricky.

Still not convinced by United's medium term fixtures

    Southampton : 3CS in 4 home games
West Ham : Defended well vs big teams, can frustrate United
Man City : Don't really need to say much about this
Sheffield United : Not a hard fixture but I don't think they're the whipping boys that people think they are
Leeds : Probably the easiest fixture in the run, can't say anything about this
Leicester : Despite yesterday, should still be a tricky game
Wolves : Always a tough team to break down especially in big games

Maybe this is just me looking for a reason to sell Bruno for Salah 😆
I guess Bruno is someone who will keep getting points somehow so no point thinking so much..

Southampton got torn apart by Werner, Zaha and Son's pace. I expect Bruno -> Rashford to be a frequent combination on the counter and they could thrive against the high line.

Sheff Utd are dreadful. What makes you believe they aren't whipping boys?

City have been exposed by Liverpool and Spurs on the counter already, not a great fixture of course but United will fancy their chances.

IMO it's a decent run, not a poor one.

What to do with City upcoming fixtures?
Man City are just not good enough at the moment. The players seem to be not giving 100% imo, and with Pep Roulette I dont see any value of getting City defenders.
However, Sterling/De Bruyne seem to be tempting. Sterling is potentially the biggest trap in FPL - you pay 11.5 for a player who cannot shoot on target. He can also score a hattrick in any of the match. Do you guys have any underlying stats on Sterling?
De Bruyne is the safe pick, however Salah getting back on the pitch meaning there is a better option towards getting back the Egyptian who is more consistent.
We also have a dillema with Vardy. Would you leave Watkins who has a veery favourable run of fixtures and you set and forget him hoping for a hattrick in one of the matches, or you get Vardy and captain him?

There is also possibility of getting tested positive again before the match for 20-25 days of initial test even after getting a negative test. This happened with Telles. So Salah is a risky pick for GW10 imo.

Initital thoughts. 1.3 itb, 1 FT

    Martinez
    Bellerin, Chillwell, Robertson
    Grealish, Son, KDB, Ziyech
    Kane, Adams, DCL

    Subs: Steer, Bissouma, Mitchell, Ferguson

Plan was to get back Salah but won't want to make big changes involving hits. I will target Fulham and do: Kane to Vardy (c), and Kdb (c) the following week. Letting go of Son may not be a good idea if we found out. Maybe Ziyech out in the future but I will go without Salah for about 2 GWs.

    Thoughts?

City have looked out of sorts all season, Sterling included. I think there are much better and cheaper options available. They have nice fixtures now so maybe they will improve but I wouldn't hold my breath.

It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. So many rumours, so little credible information.

Really bugged about this gameweek. Got 66 which is not bad but took a -8 for Son to Bruno, Reguilon to Targett and Salah to KDB. Could've and should've only go Salah to Bruno like many others, it is very embarrassing and I am deeply disappointed.

Should have had 22 points more..

Don’t beat yourself up; fwiw I think switching out Son was a risk worth taking and at least you have KDB for City’s nice run.

    Would you have:

    a) Jota, with Barkley and Brewster/Kilman rotating for 11th spot
    b) Jota, with KWP and Brewster/Kilman rotating for 11th spot
    c) Grealish, with KWP and Brewster/Kilman rotating for 11th spot

I'm staying away from city for the time being personally. None of them are bad options though. I like the flexibility of B

Who are the top defensive picks over the next few GWs? Money no object.

I'm looking at James, Coufal, Robbo, Dias..

Current D: Chilwell, Cancelo, Lamptey, Saiss*, Kilman

Was about to do Robo to Lamptey for -4 in this GW. Glad that I didn’t - probably the first 50-50 which went right for me this season.

Morning DZ. I remember Justin playing at the back 3 in one of the games. With Pereira back soon, could he replace Fuchs if Soybean remains injured?
