Analysing Fernandes and United’s other FPL assets after narrow West Brom win

Manchester United 1-0 West Bromwich Albion

  • Goals: Bruno Fernandes (£10.7m)
  • Assists: Juan Mata (£5.9m)
  • Bonus: Fernandes x3, Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.4m) x2, Victor Lindelof (£4.9m) x1

A twice-taken Bruno Fernandes (£10.7m) penalty was just enough for Manchester United to see off a spirited, if limited, West Brom side.

It was the Red Devils’ first league win at Old Trafford this season, prompting a relief-heavy comment from manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer:

We needed that win at home. It’s never comfortable against players of this quality.

FERNANDES TO THE FORE

Over-hyping the opposition continues to be a Solskjaer trait because the Baggies were organised and committed, but that was generally where their qualities ended.

Then again, there wasn’t much of the good stuff on display from the home side either, with midfielder Fernandes the best of an average lot on the night.

That was the most pleasing Fantasy Premier League (FPL) aspect of the match as the 34.5%-owned midfielder was by far the most popular player on the pitch.

His ownership had been boosted by a Gameweek-leading one million-plus new owners for the West Brom encounter and yet another penalty – seven of his 14 goals for the club have come from the spot – meant he produced a second straight double-digit return for his managers old and new.

He did require a re-take to score it, however, when his first attempt was saved by the excellent Sam Johnstone (£4.5m), albeit from well off his goal-line.

But the goal was just reward for an influential performance from Fernandes.

He created two of the game’s three big chances, which forced fine saves by Johnstone from Anthony Martial (£8.7m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) respectively, and scored from the other one.

Fernandes’ form, and United’s fixtures, are tempting more managers into the midfielder’s fold – he’s currently one of the most popular purchases for Gameweek 10.

And a pleasant mix of matches over the next six Gameweeks, with four games away and the two at home against more progressive opposition in Manchester City and Leeds, should better suit United’s counter-attacking strengths.

NOT SO FORWARD THINKING

Penalties have nourished Fernandes owners through thin times. There’s not a lot of sustenance available for the team’s other attacking options.

On another day and against a rather less inspired keeper, both Martial and Rashford might have found the net.

But the former has had a truly terrible season so far, with more red cards than goals, while Rashford’s last four starts – which have included three stints up front – have produced just one assist.

Solskjaer has handed four starts out of the last five to Juan Mata (£5.9m) and it was the veteran’s cross that drew the handball for Saturday’s penalty award.

The Spaniard now has two assists from those starts, but his lack of pace does the side few favours and his freer role seems to compromise Fernandes’ ability to get forward at times.

Many United fans would rather see the more dynamic Donny van de Beek (£6.7m) given a chance in Mata’s place, a move that the conservative Solskjaer is yet to make, and might not even have contemplated.

The manager did provide an update on another midfielder – Paul Pogba (£7.7m):

Paul got a knock in the last game (for France) and he started feeling it yesterday after the session. Well, he felt it before the session, but he couldn’t carry on. Hopefully, he’ll be okay for Tuesday.

But the only attacking game in town at the moment remains Fernandes. United have had 109 attempts so far this season and just over a fifth (24) have come solely from him.

DEFENSIVE DIVIDENDS

At least the team’s backline is starting to produce points, with two clean sheets (and just two goals conceded) over the last four Gameweeks.

The side’s most popular defender, Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.4m and 9.2%), brought in two bonus points, and eight overall, while Alex Telles (£5.5m) marked his league debut with a solid return for his 1.2% ownership.

United’s schedule is attractive enough to suggest more clean sheets can be kept for the foreseeable future.

But the prospect of attacking returns from the flanks remains remote.

United’s full-backs – including the injured Luke Shaw (£4.8m) – have created nine chances between them this season.

That’s a total bettered by six defenders on their own, while West Ham’s Ryan Fredericks (£4.3m) can match that tally from just three appearances.

Until Solskjaer risks pushing his wide men further forward, Harry Maguire (£5.4m) is probably the better bet as a consistent attacking threat.

The centre-half’s 13 attempts this season is joint-top among defenders.

As for the Baggies, manager Slaven Bilic was understandably bitter about VAR overturning a penalty award when Fernandes tackled Conor Gallagher (£5.5m):

I’m very disappointed with the result and the decisions from the referee.

But from a Fantasy perspective, the less said about a team with just six goals and one clean sheet from nine games, the better.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Telles; Matic, Fred (McTominay 84); Mata (Cavani 62), Fernandes, Rashford (van de Beek 79); Martial.

West Bromwich Albion XI (5-4-1): Johnstone; Furlong, Bartley, Ivanovic (Krovinovic 79), Ajayi, Townsend; Gallagher, Sawyers, Diangana (Robson-Kanu 62), Pereira; Grant (Robinson 62).

Any early thoughts on a move here?
Thinking Kane to Vardy or even rolling a transfer. Maupay obviously has to go at some point

    1 FT 1.5m ITB

    Martinez
    Chilwell James Mitchell
    Sterling Bruno Ziyech Grealish
    Kane DCL Maupay

    Steer/Kilman/Burke/Lamptey

I'd be tempted to save the FT and captain Sterling. That or upgrade Mitchell to a playing defender (Targett?) to make sure you field 11.

I don't really get the Kane out trend on here.

The guy is probably in the form of his life - as he's now added KDB level assisting to his game on top of the goals.

He & Salah will be fighting for top points scorer this season without doubt.

I'd get rid of Maupay first from your team

I agree there is lot of bias against Kane. Bad fixtures ? Ok so what, are we dumping salah when he has bad fixtures? Ofc not. Kane is maybe the best player in the league atm.

I t was such a lucky weekend this one for me - which makes a nice change.

I was all set on Son > Bruno until Salah got covid. So I did Salah > Bruno captain meaning I kept Son's 10 pointer.
Then, all the shenanigans surrounding Bruno's penalty re-take and WBA should have had a penalty a few minutes earlier.

Could so easily have been Son out for a Bruno captain fail and penalty miss.

But, I'll take it considering how much bad luck I've had this year (along with some bad decisions)

Played my WC this week, currently sit on 48 points with McCarthy to go... says it all!

Roll the FT on this lot or make a move?

    Martinez, McCarthy
    Lamptey*, J.Lewis, Bellerin, Chilwell, Cresswell,
    Jota, Ziyech, Bruno, Grealish, James,
    Jesus, Vardy, Watkins.

Wouldn't worry about it too much. My WC gave me a big red arrow back in GW3, but since then I've risen from almost 3million OR to 1.4 million.

You have a decent side. Roll the FT I reckon

Previously had exactly enough funds to do Son -> KDB until KDB price went up. Very frustrating!

I now have the following options:

A - bring in Sterling instead
B - downgrade elsewhere to bring in KDB for - 4 (possible downgrades include DCL, Ziyech, Dallas to 4.4 DEF, Biss to 4.4 MID)
C - bank transfer and assess City VS Burnley (I already have Vardy so I will captain him instead of KDB)

It doesn't quite work like that, Mahrez and Torres wont cover city points. City will win 8-0 and Mahrez will sit on the bench and torres will get 1 assist. KDB+ Sterling+ Jesus + Aguero will take the points. You have to go big or not at all - or Cancelo / Dias in defence

I disagree. Torres will be in the points. He's been very involved. In fact, I think he's the 2nd best City attacker to buy after KdB.

If* he plays. I don't see Torres starting every week coming up, so maybe he gets some points 1 week, and then the next a nice 1 pter. Why take that risk when KDB starts every game and will be heavily involved?

With Aguero back, Pep sometimes likes playing Aguero and Jesus left, sterling right. Mahrez plays occasionally, Foden may get a game left or right, B.Silva also, it's roulette for Torres. He has looked good I'll give you that, but not worth the benchings yet

Apparently some Egyptian news source put out the Salah negative test result.

Covid usually takes around 14 days to overcome so that would put him around this Friday to return a negative test.

Klopp is not going to rush back his best player for Brighton away.

Its worrying if a team like Fulham (who are awful), had enough about them that they pushed up the left side to force James out of the game quite easily. He's a massive liability to the team on the left, he needs to be put in the Bruno position to be really valuable. Not for me currently

Assisted the assister for the 2nd and 3rd goal. Performance in the first half was ok but didn't do much in the 2nd.

I thought Rodriguez looked great first half after a bit of a slow start. However, second half, not so good but that said nor were any of the other Everton contingent as they stepped off the gas.

If I had the exact funds to trade him for KDB, I would do it.

You have potential captaincy options with Mane and Bruno. Maybe consider saving FT and have a mini WC GW10 to bring in City mid

Was concerned doing Kane to Vardy because of Europa league but just realised that Lei/Ful game is on Monday evening so Vardy gets at least 4 days rest near enough.

Average GW so far 54 with two to play and unsure what to do with my 1FT this week and 0.0 ITB. Originally was going to do a -4 to get KDB in but not so sure now.

    Martinez
    Creswell Zouma Mitchell
    Salah JRod Grealish Son
    Kane Werner DCL

    Forster KWP Dallas Bissouma

Maybe one of Son or Kane out? Or Werner? Werner could have had back to back hatricks...Player's I'm looking at are KDB or Vardy...and then captaining them. Any help appreicated.

If I were you, the only move I would consider making to get KDB would be to sell Kane and Rodriguez (Kane becomes someone like Bamford); of course you know the risks

Probably don't want to keep double Spurs with Pool, City and Leicester having rather good fixtures. Also, don't really know what to think about Bruno and Hamez.

Ideally would do moves involving Hamez and one of Kane/Son out - thoughts?

    2FTs 3.1ITB

    Martinez
    Robo/Kilman/Chilwell
    Bruno/Son/Hamez/Grealish
    Kane/DCL/Bamford

Been holding Foden, surely with city not winning and he is scoring goals and playing very well when on the pitch he gets a start VS Burnley.

Cant keep benching him when starting players are losing games!

I'm in exactly the same position in that I have Foden and I've wanted to get rid for about 4 GW's but am always drawn in my 'Pep is bound to play him some time'.

Thinking Foden > Jota, but would love to do Bruno > Salah but am wary that means keeping Foden for another GW.

Overall rank 4.7 million with Jimenez left. Never known anything like it!!! This week's shambles:

    1. Son to Ziyech
    2. Captain options Bruno, DCL and Ziyech. Picked Ziyech.
    3. Brought in double Leeds defence two weeks ago. Conceded four each game so benched one for Lamptey.

Given this season Jimenez won't play tonight as he has Covid!

Just going to do Hamez and Jimenez to Salah and Bamford for a -4, I'll try anything at this stage!

I hope everyone is able to read this and think 'Well, it could be worse'!

It’s good that you can laugh about it. Another example that oftentimes the best thing to do is nothing and roll the trade.

Easy to say in retrospect, however. I guess that others have similar stories to tell, although I have to say, they will have to go some to top your list of catastrophic woes!

Whats your total points? It's probably still not as bad as you think. My mate was ranked ~4m going into christmas last year, in 2 good gameweeks he went up to 1m. So its not as far as you think, just keep making solid decisions and avoid hits. Maybe though for next week, a hit for Salah and captain would be a good shout. He has some serious history against brighton. Wait for news though, do your transfer late in the week in case anything else changes with CL injuries etc

Pushed the WC button this morning and currently looking at this lot:

    Martinez - (Martin)
    Chilwell - Cresswell - Cancelo - (Dallas - KWP)
    Mané - Sterling - Grealish - Zaha - (Anguissa)
    Vardy - Watkins - Bamford

Could get Salah over Mané if former looks like starting this weekend. 0.3m ITB any suggestions where I could make changes elsewhere?

      KDB over Sterling

Does Martinez, KWP, Dallas and Watkins to McCarthy, Target, Mitchell and DCL work? Feel like DCL is a good guy to get

Debating Son & Wilson to KDB & Brewster for -4

    Front 8 at the moment:

Son, Salah, Jota, Rodriguez & Ziyech
    Kane, DCL & Wilson

Need to cash to upgrade to KDB & I'd prefer to keep Wilson, but it gives me a selection headache every week.

    Thoughts?
