F-A-B

Liverpool’s injury-stricken defence turned the Fantasy Premier League narrative on its head in Gameweek 9 as they kept a first home clean sheet of the season against Leicester City.

The Fantasy community largely turned its collective back on members of the Reds’ back-line after the international break but the much-needed return of Fabinho (£5.4m) may have changed a few minds already.

Jurgen Klopp paired the Brazilian midfielder with Joel Matip (£5.4m), at the heart of Liverpool’s defence against Leicester, to the stepping up superbly to a late charge from the visitors.

Anyone wondering about the Reds’ defensive potential for upcoming fixtures against Brighton (away), Wolves (home) and Fulham (away) need only consider the tactical implications of keeping a clean sheet against an in-form Jamie Vardy (£10.2m)

On Sunday, Liverpool pinned Leicester in their own half virtually from kick-off, usually something that suits the Foxes’ central striker’s ability to punish space behind the defence – but the Reds still gave him no quarter and professional rode out a late Leicester charge.

Leicester simply could not string enough passes together to get Vardy through into the space he thrives in, Brendan Rodgers men often shaken in possession by the constant wave of Liverpool attacks. A hugely impressive achievement given the number of shortages at the back.

“We had a good opportunity on the counter with Harvey Barnes, but overall when you are passive like that, your football is not quite the same. We weren’t aggressive enough.” – Brendan Rodgers

“Centre-half, I try to be always in good communication with my teammates – Joel (Matip), Robbo, the players around me. They help me a lot. We knew we were playing against a very good team and a very dangerous striker [Jamie Vardy] but the communication was very important for that as well.” – Fabinho

NECO THE WOODS

Unsurprisingly, there was plenty of focus on Liverpool’s full-backs against Leicester, improved defensive control helping Andrew Robertson (£7.1m) to a 12-point haul courtesy of his third assist of the season and maximum bonus.

“But especially (the second) goal, Jota couldn’t have scored without an outstanding cross from Andy Robertson. What a situation in the whole build-up. All these passes and then I think it was Joel to Robbo. Albrighton tries everything to win the battle, the little challenge there and Robbo is really good first contact. Then a sensational cross.” – Jurgen Klopp

Fantasy opportunisits will have had their eye on the right-back berth though, where set-piece taker James Milner (£5.3m) filled in for Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m) and registered two assists for an 11-point haul.

“There were a lot of good things. I can’t pick one that pleased me most – maybe the performance of James Milner at right-back. He played an exceptional game, first there and then in midfield. That is what we expect from ourselves. The injuries were a massive shock in that moment but the boys have to offer solutions. We have centre-halves, they are really young. They are not experienced, you saw the bench tonight.” – Jurgen Klopp

Milner’s midfield classification might be enough to put off investment in him but Fantasy managers will be keeping an eye on the implications of an injury to Naby Keïta (£5.2m).

When he was forced off with a hamstring problem in the 54th minute, Milner took his place in midfield, leaving Neco Williams (£3.9m) to come on and finish the game at right-back.

If Keïta remains sidelined for the same length of time as Alexander-Arnold, then we might finally have a reliable budget starter in the Liverpool defence for long enough to justify investment.

“(Keïta) felt his hamstring and was not able to play on, otherwise he would have stayed on the pitch.” – Jurgen Klopp

DO I STAY OR DIOGO?

Diogo Jota (£6.6m) is starting to ask serious questions of Fantasy managers as he scored yet again in the 3-0 win over Leicester.

He has become the first player in Liverpool’s history to find the net in each of his first four competitive home matches and averages seven points per game since Gameweek 6.

The former Wolves man has secured five bonus in that time and could easily have left Anfield with a double-figure haul against Leicester, operating in Mohamed Salah‘s (£12.2m).

Kasper Schmeichel (£5.5m) was twice called into action to deny Jota at the near post while Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) twice struck the woodwork either from the Portuguese international’s pass or rebounded shot, the Brazilian’s slight waywardness costing him two assists.

The question now is, of course, how often can he start with Salah coming back into the fold following a self-isolation period?

Thankfully, we have a Champions League match against Atalanta midweek to see how prepared Klopp is to throw the Egyptian straight back into the starting line-up.

“I’ve heard, yes, it [was] negative today. I think he is from now on pretty normal in testing. Tomorrow we have the UEFA testing for the Champions League and I am pretty sure he will be in that. He can now train with us tomorrow, that’s it. He will have two tests in the next two days, so, yes, he will be tested like all of us.” – Jurgen Klopp

That said, even if Salah does return for the Gameweek 10 trip to Brighton, Jota has still delivered while sharing the pitch with him.

The two attackers started together in Gameweek 6, when Jota registered a nine-point score. And even if a Salah return pushes the former Wolves man to the bench, he came on for 20 minutes against West Ham and came away with eight points.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, Fabinho, Matip, Milner; Keïta (N Williams 54′), Wijnaldum, C Jones; Mané (Minamino 89′), Firmino, Jota (Origi 89′).

Leicester City XI (3-4-2-1): Schmeichel; Fuchs (Praet 62′), Evans, Fofana; Justin, N Mendy, Tielemans, Albrighton; H Barnes (Ünder 62′), Maddison; Vardy.

Just a feeling with Dias, I know Cancelo has more attacking but for same price I just feel Dias will get more points in the long run, more nailed and with the amount of players getting covid and missing games I’m going to need everyone playing

Liverpool play midweek Champions League for the next 3 weeks and so Jota is bound to get some decent Prem League gametime during that period.

You can look at it either way.

Lots of midweeks so he'll have some PL benchings, to play CL.

No interest in Pool defense. But happy to own Jota. Getting him in this week for a hit saved my gameweek and kept me in the top 1M (but still a red arrow).

I am going with Jota, should be able to stomach the odd benching given his value (allowing upgrades elsewhere) and how effective he can be from the bench.

But I am not planning to get him until GW12 along with Salah. Hopefully his price doesn't rise too much before then!

Absolute joke disaster gameweek. 37pts. Kane assist and Robbo 12pts. Ziye(c)h and Klich gave me cs point. Others 1 or 2.

I think Cancelo is better. He's a BP magnet, and insane chance creation. His extra bonus and assists he'll get will outweigh the odd benchings.

    2. FPL_Motty
      • 5 Years

I think its a tougher call than what most people think. Cancelo seems the obvious more exciting one, but Dias has attacking threat also, scored 2 goals in 1 game for Portugal against Croatia. He will also play every game and that cant be sniffed that, could easily out-point cancelo from consistency of starts. Depends on your bench

    3. Catastrophe
      • 14 Years

On the face of it I would say Dias is more nailed but Cancelo has been performing great and I don't think Pep has the luxury of rotating given their poor form. I'm going for Cancelo over Dias, probably this week.

1.21 from a different source (XG philosophy) - from the game I can only remember a few chances they fluffed, I think a fair amount came from one corner where the ball was bouncing around and someone had a shot in the 6 yard box.

In reality the game as a whole was super professional and I was pretty pleased with how the defence looked all things considered.

      Robbo was top drawer.
He was involved constantly down the left flank. On another day he could have returned two assists and a goal.
      Before GW9 I was doing Robbo>Cancelo
      Kane>Vardy(c) with my 2 FT’s for GW10 to fund Son>KDB for GW11.
No way I’m selling Robbo now after seeing him against Leicester.

In relation to above. What's the better play?
    A. Ziyech to Jota (Keep Robbo).
    B. Robbo to Cancelo/Dias (Keep Ziyech)

they will concede at least 3 in my opinion. parking the bus only works if you have good outlets to take the pressure off occasionally (Vardy, Kane, Son).

Burnley will just collapse in on themselves, City will be camped on edge of box and chance of penalties, deflected shots just increase.

I know you've said 'only for the next two weeks' but I think the answer to this depends on your situation.

In other words, I would suggest keeping who you currently have and not spending a transfer. If you're on a wildcard, then I think Salah is a better option beyond the next two weeks, so would pick him to avoid future transfers

    Martinez, Forster
    Robertson, Chilwell, Masuaku, Dallas, Kilman

Players I'd be happy to get rid of:

Those who are going Salah-less, when are you planning on getting him back in? GW 12 against Fulham or is there another viable captain for that week?

United play City that week so that's two major teams out of the equation. Maybe Vardy vs Brighton but I'd just get Salah/Mane and target the worst team in the league.

        11 or 12.

I can get him back next week if Rashford has p*ssed me off enough to warrant immediate removal in 11 for a hit. If not, I'll save FT and do it in 12.

I suppose it's a bit more complicated for me as I've penciled in KDB for Son for GW11 and that will leave me with pretty much nothing ITB...do I captain Vardy against Brighton in GW12 or do I take a hit to downgrade Vardy>Brewster and bring in Salah for Foden? Planning a long way here!

GW12, by losing Fernandes. I always try to at least own the FFScout Poll leader every week, to protect against heavy rank drops. Salah will be the most popular captain by a country mile that week, EO in excess of 100% for sure. I think it would be sensible for those without him right now to draft up a plan of how they plan to get him back in.

Never usually a fan of 'upside chasing', doing a transfer specifically for one game week, nor planning transfers across multiple GWs in advance... but have money itb for going Rodriguez -> KDB for Fulham H (giving me a Sterling/KDB double up), then probably Sterling -> Salah for Fulham A. Already have Jota.

I'm on wildcard this week. I was all set for Vardy but now I feel that a midfield 5 is the way forward.

Trying to decide between KDB, Bruno and Sterling for 2 weeks, then Sterling to Salah for Fulham. Or just go with KDB, Bruno and Salah from the off. City could pile on the points in the next 2 games, but I've not seen anything from Sterling that suggests he will outscore Salah. Grealish and Jota making up the numbers.

          Rough-ish
          Wildcarded....

          Target 0
          Cancelo 1
          Grealish 1
          KDB 2
          Ziyech 3

Fortunately, Bruno Penalty turned the week
          Bruno (c) - 22
          DCL - 13
          Coufal - 6
          Vardy - 2
          McCarthy - 7

Scraping to a neither good nor bad 59... I was worried it was gonna be Sub 30 points when Bruno missed the first penalty. Lucky escape

Back-to-back 200k GWs/80 pointers! 81 this week, 249k GW rank. Moved up from 2.3m to 709k in two game weeks. Much more like it.

Smooth; New recruits Coufal & De Bruyne in for Trent & Salah. Bruno(c), DCL, Son, Kane, Bellerin, Konsa all returning plus three handy points off Ryan & Soucek.

Rough; De Bruyne was a let down. Mitrovic my only one pointer. Needs to go now.

Smooth: Previous transfers (Creswell, Chilwell) working out. Brighton finally won again and still plenty more GWs to come...

Rough: I think I've lost the plot a bit as I'm doing so badly. Did Bruno, Ziyech & Bamford in for Son, Foden & Jimi for a -8. In fairness that stats were backing me up and I gained 0.6 in value but it definitely cost me points this week, especially as I got Lamptey off the bench for Salah

          Rough

          Smooth
my only transfer of the week Jimmy to DCL worked out well, with Bruno(c), Son, Kane, Bellerin & Chillwell helping me to a very decent 71pts

First good week of the season, GW rank of 67k. 87 (-4) and inside the top million for the first time since GW1

I had Martial & Rashford for this week, but with both flagged I decided to add Bruno and captain him for a hit.

Returns from DCL, Son, Chilwell, Creswell & Konsa. And an unexpected 12 points from striker vs keeper in McCarthy and Jimenez.

On to the wildcard this week and attack the next run of fixtures.

First good week of the season for me this week saw me move from 3.1mil to 2.25mil OR. Played my WC and a few 50-50 decisions went my way, e.g. got DCL over Rich, played Coufal over Targett. Returns for Jota, Adams and McCarthy were particularly nice to end the week on a high.

The only rough really was Spurs and City game. I sold Kane, Son and Regulion so lost points there but still happy with my WC overall.

            74 points 6k overall.

Was going so well before Zaha news (also have PVA for three games) They would have won that last night IMO with Zaha.and PVA could have scored higher as well.

Sure Grealish and Ziyech blanked but Son was a nice surprise.

The fact that Palace now plays on Friday from a Monday game (stupid!) I cannot see Zaha being back in time and now need hit for a KDB move.

I will wait for team news if he is negative as he will be straight back in the team but disrupted my plans for sure lol 🙂
