Champions League

The best players to sign and captain for UCL Fantasy Matchday Four

UEFA Champions League Fantasy managers come into the next round of action with the same problem as their Fantasy Premier League counterparts: a vast array of injury flags.

Matchday Four of the compacted European schedule is upon us and, with a few weeks out of action, we are here to get you back into the UCL Fantasy mood in time for Tuesday and Wednesday’s matches.

Captains Sensible

All things being equal, there could be some big scores this Matchday. Plenty of top teams are at home to minnows, leaving us with a wealth of captaincy options to choose from.

Tuesday November 24

Sensible

The best players to sign and captain for UCL Fantasy Matchday Three

It is not often there are two picks which are this good on a single Matchday and I really could not choose a winner. Cristiano Ronaldo (€12.0m), of course, needs no introduction. He scored twice in Juventus‘ 2-0 win over Cagliari on Saturday and is perfectly placed to do the same against Hungarian outfit Ferencvaros. Although Ronaldo only came away with an assist in the 4-1 win in Hungary, he will be ready to make sure he is not kept off the scoresheet again.

Newly-crowned Golden Boy Erling Haaland (€11.0m) has scored four goals in his first three Champions League games this season, netted four goals on at Berlin on Saturday, and faces the weakest team in Borussia Dortmund’s group at home tonight. One goal in Matchday Two, two goals in Matchday Three – will Haaland finally be taking a Champions League matchball to bed in Matchday Four?

Differential

Ciro Immobile (€10.5m) is finally back fit and firing for Lazio. Last season’s Serie A Golden Boot winner scored at the weekend, takes penalties and looks ready to help Lazio secure their place in the second round. They host Zenit, who have only kept one European clean sheet this season and have been thoroughly lacklustre throughout.

Wednesday November 25

Sensible

Again, there is an array of strong captaincy options on Wednesday, but following my tried and tested FPL mantra of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, I’ll stick with Robert Lewandowski (€12.0m). Do I really need to explain more than it’s the home fixture in a game where they won 6-2 three weeks ago and the Bayern Munich man scored a brace?

Differential

João, João, João (I’ll see myself out), this guy has looked great recently. João Félix (€9m) has become the lynchpin in Atletico’s great recent form, and has scored braces in three of his last five games. He seems to be on penalties and Atletico will know that they need to win here to put themselves in a strong position to qualify.

Who to bring in?

With three games against different teams remaining, this is an interesting time for transfers. As odd as it sounds, this is not the time to bring in players from the teams running away with their groups.

Wins this week will see Barcelona, Juventus, Chelsea, Sevilla, Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern confirm their places in the next round and allow the resting and rotation of players in the final two Matchdays to cope with compacted festive schedules.

I would look at good teams with lots to play for still. Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and PSG all spring to mind as teams which need some big wins and big performances to see them through to the knockout stages.

Who to avoid?

Unfortunately, this is an easier section than normal to write. I will just keep it to players that are likely to be in some reader’s squads.

Barcelona have travelled to Kiev without Lionel Messi (€12.1m), Fati (€8.3m), Sergi Roberto (€5.6m) and Gerard Pique (€5.4m).

Juventus have just one recognised centre-back fit after injuries to Merih Demiral (€5.0m), Leonardo Bonucci (€5.5m) and Giorgio Chiellini (€5.4m).

Sevilla have Jesús Navas (€5.6m) suspended, Bono (€5.1m) out injured and Marcos Acuna (€5.1m) a doubt after he was hauled off injured at the weekend.

Bayern Munich have Joshua Kimmich (€6.6m) out for the group stages and Lucas Hernandez (€5.0m) is also a doubt.

Any FPL fans will be fully aware of Liverpool’s injury woes across the board, but they’re hopeful that Mohamed Salah (€11.5m) will be ready to play Atalanta.

Last Matchday’s top scorer Alassane Plea (€8.0m) is out, and Ramy Bensebaini (€5.5m) has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).

Sergio Ramos (€6.5m) and Karim Benzema (€10.5m) have also been confirmed out of Real’s trip to Inter, although Casemiro (€6.2m) is fit. Antony (€5.9m) is a doubt for Ajax.

As always, good luck to everyone in the next round of UEFA Champions League Fantasy.

Pretty stuck with a double chelsea defense vs. a double spurs attack so in a tough spot!! Best moves here with 1 FT and 4m.

    Martinez
Chilwell James Saiss* -- Mitchell Lamptey
Bruno Son Barnes Grealish -- Burke
    Watkins DCL Kane

    A: Saiss + Barnes >> Lewis/Balbuena + KDB (c) (-4).
    B: Saiss + Barnes >> Masauku/Ayling + Sterling (c) (-4)
    C: Saiss + Barnes + Kane >> Cancelo + KDB + Werner (-8)

Would definitely not say he's a season keeper. There are none. 2 blanks and he has City upcomign and you're gonna keep him when Liverpool play FUL? I don't think so. Lots can and will change.

I'm not sure anyone is a season keeper -- I don't like that wording.

I will get Salah back and also keep Bruno for the foreseeable future. United have done very well against City recently. I've gone cheaper in the forward line with DCL, Bamford, and Adams to make this possible.

    Mini-leagues Update after Gameweek 9:

Da Hao Huang leads our open-to-all Fantasy Football Scout mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/111864/standings/c) (code: 5u05vz) for a second Gameweek and is now up to 48th overall. He has been in the top thousand since GW3 after playing his Wildcard in GW2.

Arya Kothari has regained the lead in our FFS Community Members mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/584/standings/c) after wildcarding in GW9 and is now up to 81st overall. He has also been in the top thousand since GW3 and previously led this mini-league after GW6. Zou Hir, who led after GW7 and GW8, drops to third. This mini-league is open to anyone with an FFS account; the code is shown on the Members home page and in the Scout Leagues widget when signed in.

Ville Tuominen (Santigold) still leads League 1 of the FFS Head-to-Head leagues (https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/head-to-head-leagues/) with 24 points out of a possible 27 after a narrow victory over Aleksander Vage Nilsen (AleksanderVN).
David Stanton (Captain Wales), Nigel Kendall and Muhammad Faris all suffered their first defeats in GW9, which leaves Anoop K in League 5 Division 4 and Filipe Loureiro in League 6 Division 16 as the only managers in the top six Leagues to have won all nine of their matches so far.
The Head-to-Head GW9 results and GW10 fixtures will be included in TopMarx’s next ‘Best of the FFScout Community’ and ‘Complete Guide’ articles.

The safety score for GW9 in TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/33020/standings/c) (code: 48n69x) was 46, with at least 190 managers to be removed. New joiners must have passed all previous safety scores (https://torresmagic.webs.com/lmsupdate.htm). See also https://www.livefpl.net/LMS for live updates.

Alaa Khaled Mokhtar has regained the lead in my Top 10k Any Season mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/348/standings/c) (code: 8kcvzq) which he previously led after GW7, and is now up to 1,578th overall. Last week’s leader Dan Robertson drops to ninth.

Sven Ove Berg is the new leader of PDM’s Top 1k ANY Season mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/40728/standings/c) (code: 2agvvx) and is up to 6,311th overall after wildcarding in GW8. Rich Booth, who led after Gameweeks 6 and 7, is level with him on points but has made more transfers. Last week’s leader Killingholme Clay drops to eleventh. Sven is in his 11th FPL season and has had five top 6k finishes, the best of which was 340th in 2014/15.

Mike Varcoe is the new leader of Chaballer’s Hall of Fame >Top 1k< mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/74508/standings/c) (code: mr8dyh) and is up to 11,267th overall, six points ahead of Benjamin Teo who had led since GW5. Mike has been playing since at least 2006/07, is 357th in the FFS Career Hall of Fame and has had eight top 10k finishes, three of them in the top thousand, the best of which was 200th in 2013/14.

Stephen Kearney tops Greyhead’s The Next Great and The Good mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/143783/standings/c) for a second Gameweek but has slipped to 14,381st overall.

Fabio Borges is still the highest ranked Pro Pundit after his 92 points (less a four point hit) in GW9 took him up to 29,903rd overall.

The rivalry between Mat Williams (Matzi11a) and Lee Cowen (Granville) continues in the FFS Mods & Cons mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/581/standings/c). Mat, who previously led after GW6 and GW7, is back on top after wildcarding in GW8 and is now up to 36,399th overall, with a ten point lead over Granville, who had led after GW3, GW5 and GW8.

Andy Short is the new leader of Skooldaze’s FPL Vets 2006 or before mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/440874/standings/c) and is up to 56,754th overall, nine points ahead of Anoop K (who has 100% in FFS Head-to-Head League 5 Division 4 as mentioned earlier) and a further nine points ahead of Sng Jungyang who had led since GW4. Andy’s best previous finish was 3,328th in 2018/19.

Greg Winski is the new leader of my Multiple Top 10k Finishes mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/473582/standings/c) (code: 8t42p6) for teams with two or more top 10,000 finishes and is up to 63,964th overall. Elias Kharma (@FPLMason), who led after GW6 and GW7, is level with him on points after wildcarding in GW9 but has made more transfers. Last week’s leader Linda Parkes drops to fourth. Greg is in his sixth FPL season, finishing 1,272nd in 2016/17 and 8,797th in 2017/18.

2017/18 FPL Champion Yusuf Sheikh is still top of Simon March’s FPL Champions League (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/1367/standings/c). He has led since Gameweek 2 and is now up to 68,165th overall after wildcarding in GW9.

Joe Collett is the new leader of the Fantasy Football Scout Network mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/693919/standings/c) and is now 87,433rd overall, six points ahead of last week’s leader Beraht Thapa (Americans Talk FPL). This is Joe’s seventh FPL season, his best previous finish being 154k last year.

    Afternoon all

Can I people’s thoughts on what to do when your defenders have fixtures against your attacking players?

My back three is Robbo, Chilwell and Coufal. Robbo is fine this week but Chilwell plays against Spurs (I have Son and Kane) and Coufal plays against Villa (I have Grealish and Watkins). Not planning to ditch any of those attackers this week and my back up defenders are Lamptey (suspended) and Mitchell (not likely to play).

I figure playing Chilwell is a no-brainer because of his attacking threat. But Coufal might be better on the bench this week. Fancy Villa to score as they have done away to Arsenal and Leicester (and Fulham, but any team worth its salt should be able to do that).

I have 2FT and money in the bank (2.6m) so could upgrade Mitchell or Lamptey to anyone decent. Obvious options would be Dias or Cancelo given City’s run of upcoming fixtures. Maguire or Telles might be worth considering too. Or Bellerin.

Worth spending a transfer and improving the defence for this week and the future? Or just play Robbo, Chilwell and Coufal and use the transfer and money elsewhere?

    Cheers!

      Kane, DCL, Watkins

Depends if there's something else you want to do with your transfers and money.

You sound like you want to make the defender transfer, which is fine. If you did not want to, you could do something else.

Yeah, if he spends the money on defence, then he will have to accept not being able to afford the template midfield. Which is okay if he wants to take that risk, but it is a big risk.

Not that bothered about "the template". Changes all the time anyway depending on form/fixtures. Not having Salah could definitely hurt though. But not convinced about Fernandes as a long-term keeper. And Rodriguez probably needs to go soon - may give him one more week to start firing again.

The only option, was, like you, downgrade Zaha and upgrade one 4.5 Defender or Ferguson to Cancelo, but, hard to pay off short term for -12.

                  Ferguson+Barkley+Zaha+Jimenez to Cancelo+Jota+Soucek+Vardy (-12)

                  or

                  Barkley+Jimenez to Jota+Vardy(C) and Play Bissouma (-4)

I can actually see a lot of upside to those 4 transfers. Taking a -12 could go totally tits up but sometimes they pay off. I did a -8 earlier this season that more than paid off in one week and transformed my team moving forwards. You know the risks but could be worth it.

    Hi all

Do you think Wilson is likely to play next weekend?

Having the worst luck at the moment with Lamptey suspension, Wilson injury, Mitchell and now Zaha with Covid...

Reckon Bruce will want him back in ASAP. The toon look toothless without him. But depends on the injury/recovery. I'd wait for the presser before making any moves.

Have the exact cash to do Son to KDB (C) for a hit.

    A. Do it
    B. Not worth it

With our long-faced friend here. Son is a keeper I think until (if) his form tails off. KDB hasn't hauled since GW1 and City look off form. I'd wait until they look better before jumping on.

That's a tough one. how much value have you tied in Son and how much would it cost you to bring KDB in for 10 --> 14 and Son back for GW15 which seems like the sensible play

I'd save. See what happens with Salah too. You could swap Rashford and Kane for KDB and BamfordWatkins -4. Not convinced it's worth it though.

Depending on your selling price for Rashford, you could go Maupay > Che Adams and would that give you enough funds to do Rashford > KDB.

Thoughts on this Team, chaps? Requires -4 over the next couple of game-weeks:

    Martinez
    Chilwell, Cancelo, Zouma
    Salah, KDB, Fernandes, Son, Jota
    DCL, Bamford

    (Steer, Kilman, Brewster, Mitchell)

Happy with the Jota 'gamble' as it facilitates a strong midfield and defence albeit with no Grealish, Ziyech and Kane (can't have them all!). Pretty decent 'attacking' Liverpool fixtures coming up too (bri, WOL, ful, TOT, cpl, WBA, new).

    Cheers.

Bar Zaha to someone, I cant see any other changes to this team right now. Im loathe to sell performing players like Son and Kane. I think its mad actually.

    I have 1.9mITB and 2FT's

    GK: Martínez
    DEF: Cresswell Chilwell Robertson
    MID: Zaha Son Grealish Salah
    FWD: Calvert-Lewin Kane Bamford
    BENCH: Forster Mitchell Kilman Bissouma

There's definitely some huge 'form vs. fixture' decisions to make. I think you may struggle without City though just as their fixtures are so good and surely their form will turn. I would go Kane -> Vardy and then Zaha & Grealish -> KDB and Jota perhaps (if money allows). Vardy to Bruno in a few gameweeks perhaps. Or as you indicate, you could stick with what you have and you might score more 😉

It all boils down to "Do we think City" will do well against those teams they play and, if so, better than the Spurs assets. Such a hard call.

Team looks sweet as it is. Like you say, probably best to ship Zaha but there are decent options, esp with 1.9m ITB. Otherwise my concern - applies to my team too (see above) is that Chelsea play Spurs this GW and WHU play Villa. Chilwell should play given his attacking threat but not sure about Coufal (your Cresswell). I have two Villa attackers so considering benching Coufal and bringing in a City defender. Worth it?

I do there will come a point when double spurs owners (me being 1 of them) will have to make a choice between the two and that will probably end up being Kane for me but with the teams they are coming up against right now, it seems to make sense to hold them as both could play an integral role in how they play (Son scoring on break, Kane assisting and taking pens).

      1. Bojam

Totally agree with this. Not being stubborn - will move one on if and when it is warranted. But not kneejerking one of them out until it is clear that there is a better alternative. These kind of moves have a habit of coming back to bite.

    4. Kane + Son -> Vardy + KDB/Salah -4.

    Barkley, Fernandes, Son, Grealish.
    Kane, Jimenez, DCL.

How lucky have Bruno Fernandes' owners been this season though? Talk about jam. Not all his points ofc but the retaken pen v wba, penalty v Brighton after full time whistle should have been blown, could easily have seen red in that game and against Everton. Not bitter or anything, just saying.

I'm not saying you're wrong overall, but I don't think it's correct to say the retaken pen was lucky. If the GK doesn't come off his line, he has a much lower chance of saving it!

I have the same issue when (occasionally) watching NFL games. The announcers say things like 'well if the offensive lineman didn't hold him, that 60 yard run for a touchdown would have counted'. Maybe.. but quite often the hold is what allows the run!

I panicked last week and went Son-> Ziyech, but Son was always leaving me team.

Having banked a few ok weeks and slightly recovering (sitting 487K), I think it's time to be aggressive:

    Maupay -> Bamford
    Ziyech -> KDB

Are locked in, but i need to find 0.4m and every day is making that figure grow.
    a) Kane -> Vardy (c)
    b) Lamperty -> trash
    c) Robertson -> Cancelo

This would be for a -8, but i'm terribly placed in head to head fixtures this week so happy to soak up the extra hit to get a good (c).

    McCarty (4m)
    Chilwell-Coufal-Mitchell (Lamptey-Bernardo)
    Salah-Kdb-B Fernandes - Grealish - Zaha
    Watkins-DCL (Bamford)

I've already used my FT but going to struggle in defence heading into the next gw

I am tempted to do the following for a (-8)

Zaha + Bernardo for Soucek + Cancelo

    Any opinions or alternative?

Wait for Zaha news. If Zaha is out then take the -8. If available, leave the team as it is and risk it with 3 defs. I don't see those hits paying off

      Love the midfield.

I know it sucks having 10 players, but i'm not sure a hit for a defender is worth it.

Currently your 3rd defender is on 0 points. A single hit and that defender is -4. I'm guessing you have limited funds in the bank so can't get a starter without a -8 unless you get rid of Lamperty. So really your defender is starting at -8 (as i assume you'd bench Soucek).

Now hopefully you get 2 appearance points and Cancelo had a great chance of a clean sheet this weekend. That still leaves you on -2. He has 1 assist all season, though stats are good, but no score greater than 8. So you're banking on a score not yet returned to make a small gain.

      Seems pretty risky to me!

      1. Heisenberg W. W.
        • 3 Years

Thanks for the analysis, you're right in that the my money ITB is limited to 0.1 so without taking a -8 I'm very limited in what I can do with my defence unless I get rid of Lamptey.

I considered a straight swap for Jota - Zaha (-4) but it doesnt solve my defensive problem. I need to raise funds to reinvest elsewhere I have a better hence the -8 strategy which I m hopin will pay dividends over the next 3 game weeks.

Cancelo could potentially produce 2 clean sheets with 2 home games being Burnley and Fulham

Is it worth taking any hits to get a City attacker this ? I’m not so sure.
Burnley are looking good at the back, the old annoying Dyche team that keeps plenty of clean sheets.
Pope seems to have really found his form, and there’s been a major shift in performances since their full defence has returned. Let’s not forget they as a team were decimated for the first part, particularly at the back.
It’s only been 2 games, but since Ben Mee has come back, they haven’t conceded, admittedly part of that is down to Pope being in such fine fettle. Lowton is back too.

They will get mauled by City. I think the last 3 home fixtures are the Etihad have been 5-0 to City.
Best to attack the fixtures if you’re chasing and go big on City assets these next few gameweeks.

I think this is a great point. Burnley arn't whipping boys.

That said, if any team will pick you apart if left to just sit and pass around in front of the defence. Then Man City is that team. I don't think KDB will get a monster score, but can easily see 10-12 points.

Just don’t think it’s worth taking hits to get rid of the likes of Son or Bruno for KDB who has no form.

Burnley aren't whipping boys as you said and KdB is fatigued. So I think this isn't the fixture to target as you said. And since anyone can pick up muscle injury or get covid, -4 isn't probably justified. Having said that, transferring injured or ill players out to get decent starting XI can be worth it.

Is having Jota as an alternative/cover for Salah worth it if it means keeping both Kane and Son?

    Son - Sterling - Grealish - Jota
    DCL - Kane - Vardy

Will be ditching Bruno (no-one else has him in my mini league, not interested in rank just my league) Brewster/Bruno to Jota/Vardy -4
