Coady isolation forces four-man defence as McCarthy continues to prove FPL worth

Wolves 1-1 Southampton

  • Goals: Pedro Neto (£5.5m) | Theo Walcott (£5.8m)
  • Assists: Raúl Jiménez (£8.4m) | Che Adams (£5.9m)
  • Bonus points: Alex McCarthy x3 (£4.5m), Adams x2, Kyle Walker-Peters x1 (£4.6m)

SAVING THE SAINTS

Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) was the star of the Fantasy Premier League show on Monday night as he managed a seven-point score in a 1-1 draw at Wolves.

The Southampton goalkeeper made a total of eight saves and, despite conceding, came away with maximum bonus thanks to no player earning a share for a game-winning goal and a late Che Adams (£5.9m) foul.

Thanks to repeated denials of Daniel Podence (£5.4m) in particular, McCarthy has now earned an additional two points for saves in two of his last three Premier League outings and has averaged 4.4 points per game.

Among goalkeepers, only Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) has offered better value this season than him too, the West Ham man scoring 10.0 points per million spent to McCarthy’s 8.9.

Crucially, the form of Southampton’s goalkeeper could potentially come into the decision-making process for the Gameweek 10 captaincy.

Bruno Fernandes (£10.8m) travels to St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon fresh from back-to-back double-figure hauls, three of the four he has recorded this season coming on the road too.

However, Southampton are yet to concede a single goal at home since their Gameweek 2 thrashing by Spurs and, if McCarthy is in half the form he was on Monday night, Manchester United assets could easily be frustrated…

COAD BREAKERS

Wolves were forced to contend Monday night’s encounter without club captain Conor Coady (£4.9m) who, following a period of self-isolation missed his first league match in over three years, having played the previous 120 in a row.

“A big (blow to lose Coady). Unfortunately, with Coady and Saiss, players that have been with us since the Championship. Since (Conor) returned from the England squad, he has been self-isolating. He has tested negative, maybe he’s already immune but he cannot be with us.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

“Saïss is in self-isolation since returning from the national team. He tested positive. He is comfortable with the situation. He is at home by himself with his family in another room and he has to protect himself to stay fit and healthy.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Coady’s absence, as well as a positive coronavirus (COVID-19) test for Romain Saïss (£5.2m), triggered Wolves’ first outing with a back-four since May 2017, when Paul Lambert was the manager for a 1-0 win over Preston North End.

In this rather unfamiliar set-up, Nuno Espirito Santo deployed Rayan Aït-Nouri (£5.0m) and Nélson Semedo (£5.6m) as traditional full-backs with the left-footed Max Kilman (£4.3m) as the right-sided centre-back to Willy Boly (£5.5m), although the two switched over at half-time.

It was clear that Wolves took some time to grow into a 4-3-3 formation, with Southampton causing plenty of problems with their narrow formation.

However, once they added Pedro Neto (£5.5m) to midfield in the place of Rúben Neves (£5.3m) and went for a 4-2-3-1, Wolves were the better team in the closing stages and the most likely to win the game.

“Conor was not available. Saiss also. We decided to go with three midfielders and it was good. I think we should grow, we should find solutions. We have an identity that is more not about the system, it is about the idea that we fight and try to play good football and we try to be solid. I think we managed that. Let’s see (if we use four at the back again).” – Nuno Espirito Santo

INGS ARE LOOKING UP

Despite fears that Danny Ings‘ (£8.3m) injury would limit Southampton’s offensive capabilities, Ralph Hasenhüttl has found a very effective solution in the strike-pairing of Adams and Theo Walcott (£5.8m).

The two players have only enjoyed two Premier League outings as a front-two but have already combined in each of those.

Walcott was the more dangerous of the two at Molineux, using his pace to get around the back on more than one occasion.

In the first half, he whipped an effort back across goal which was well-stopped by Rui Patrício (£5.5m), before punishing Semedo’s momentary lack of concentration in the second, sneaking in at the back post to tap Adams’ cross into an empty net.

Later, Walcott played an incredible chipped through-ball to Adams, straight out of the Harry Kane (£11.0m) playbook, but the former Birmingham man pulled his effort just wide.

Once the Gameweek 10 meeting with Manchester United is out of the way, Southampton face Brighton (away), Sheffield United (home), Arsenal (away) and Fulham (away) between Gameweeks 11 and 15, perhaps the best time to consider investing in Adams or Walcott, depending on Ings’ fitness, of course.

Of the two, Adams seems the most likely to hold his place, but the out-of-position factor for Walcott certainly hands him the most explosive potential before Ings returns to the side.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (4-3-3): Patrício; Aït-Nouri, Boly, Kilman, Semedo; Moutinho, Neves (Neto 70′), Dendoncker; Podence (Vitinha 85′), Jiménez, A Traoré.

Southampton XI (4-4-2): A McCarthy; Bertrand, Vestergaard, Bednarek, Walker-Peters; Djenepo (S Long 79′), Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Armstrong (Diallo 90′); Adams, Walcott.

Thoughts on this for a -8?

    Auba, Werner and Mitrovic out
    Jota, Aguero and Vardy in

That was my original plan - Aguero with Burnley, Fulham and West Brom at home in 3 of the next 4 keeps winking at me though!

Yeah fixtures are certainly great. Just no clue if Aguero will start over Jesus with them both back, and Werner is playing teams that suit him

I think I'm right in saying the last 3 games between these clubs at The Etihad have ended 5-0. Aguero has scored 9 goals in 10 games v Burnley. Ownership 1.3%. It's a gamble but you'll never get such an opportunity again. Capt for me

Keep Werner and bring only 1 of Vardy or Kun. Whichever you will captain. The extra -4 isn't needed as Werner is ticking over nicely. You can always make the third trade for free next gameweek.

City all the way. The fixtures are too good. I'd probably lean towards Dias being the safer option. Clean sheets and a threat from set peices. Cancelo probably got a higher ceiling though and seems popular round these parts.

Sure they will at some point. Though definitely don't look very potent/clinical in attack yet. Anyway, their defence has looked pretty solid, last GW notwithstanding. I imagine that there will be a few clean sheets in the coming weeks.

Would you play Coufal this week vs Villa (I have Grealish and Watkins)? I'll also be playing Chilwell for sure (and I have Son and Kane). Or is it worth benching Coufal and using a transfer to upgrade either Mitchell (out of favour) or Lamptey (suspended) to a decent starter - e.g. Dias, Cancelo, etc.? Have money in the bank and 2FT.

Agreed, Rashford to Salah is an easy deal should there be news he’s gonna look like playing, would of thought Southampton looked a good game for Rashford but he just doesn’t seem to be doing it for me.

Annoying isn’t it, feel though that if we’re happy with our teams then we ain’t really doing much wrong and the points will come sooner rather than later.

Haha same defence! Likewise not a lot wrong there at all, good team. JRod to KDB is a sound transfer, a city mid would certainly be something to jump rivals and rank if they did well as nobody had them hardly. Plenty of money ITB there as well even more than me haha.
It’s hard to suggest anything else there aside from a city mid with the money available. Werner to Vardy possibly but he’s ticking over nicely.

Also might consider the Chelsea double up in defence. I know they've been sound recently and both Chilwell and James can chip in with goals/assists. But the fixtures turn quite rough. Maybe one is enough for the time being?

                  Martinez (Forster)

                  2FT; 2.6ITB

Not thinking to lose Kane or Son. Probably upgrade either Mitchell or Lamptey to Dias. What do you reckon?

If ya happy with the rest of the team then upgrading Mitchell could prove wise, certainly consider a City defender, seems the best route to take right now for their next three at least. Then can always move on Kane or Son if City look electric next game perhaps.
Barring that, maybe a Rodriguez upgrade but I’d be inclined to keep maybe for his next match.

Cheers - that's really helpful. Was thinking to give City another game to impress in attack before possibly bringing one in for Fulham. And yeah - Rodriguez definitely on the ditch list but Leeds at home could be an ideal fixture to haul.
Not sure how to deal with Salah. Can't have them all but on current form I'd probably lean towards him over KDB/Sterling.

No problemo. Yeah I’m leaning towards giving them one more game before deciding, just hope I’m not being too clever there but as shown, can only go off what we’re seeing, and that right now is not a hot city playing.
You’re right, Leeds at home, could be goals in that for both sides. Still certainly lean towards Salah over KDB/Sterling, just need to keep in the know when Salah’s return is.

if you're set on keeping brewster then i would upgrade Soucek
no good having 3.3m itb when you're ranked 2.5m
to make ground I would lose at least one spurs.
Rashford to Kdb or Kane to Vardy could work
Salah can wait til gw12 and perfect Bruno swap when they face City

Cheers man. Very true, it’s just a case of wether I upgrade a bench player in Brewster, or use the money to capitalise on a City asset or Vardy, or even both for a hit. Salah GW 12 could be great if he’s not gonna be back anytime soon.

the fact we don't even know which one of jesus/aguero will start says it all so no for -4
B seems like it could just net off as breakeven
      still prefer grealish over watkins

      - Milner relied on to deputise vs LEI.
      - Milner gets two assists.
      - Liverpool keep a CS.

You have to first convince me that these aren't all points in Milner's favour.

      can't see Milner playing midweek
Phillips not in champions league squad but Rhys Williams is - hopefully he's recovered from injury and plays midweek
Would expect Milner to keep his RB spot at the weekend
Then again Robbo could be rested midweek for Tsimikas which would the most sense coming off international break

    1. Barkley-> Jota. 2.6m ITB. Captain Bruno and hope for the best.
    2. Barkley + Jimenez-> Sterling (c) + Bamford (Exact cash).

    McCarthy.
    Cancelo, Chilwell, Justin.
    Barkley, Fernandes, Son, Grealish.
    Kane, Jimenez, DCL.
    Button, Ayling, Bissouma, Mitchell.
1ft, 3.3m ITB. WC in hand.

Yes but then stuck with Barkley who is out for 2 weeks at least it seems. Also it restricts moves later I think when I want Salah/KDB/Sterling.

Any suggestions on priority moves here?

    Martinez (Forster)
    Robbo, Chilwell, Coufal (Lamptey, Mitchell)
    Bruno, Son, Rodriguez, Grealish (Soucek)
    Kane, DCL, Watkins

    2FT; 2.6ITB

Not thinking to lose Kane or Son (yet). Probably upgrade either Mitchell or Lamptey to Dias this week. Would leave 1FT and some money ITB.

Which option looks best to you over the next two weeks?

    A) Watkins (whu, NEW) Son (che, ARS)
    B) Vardy (FUL, shu) Jota (bha, WOL) -4 points
    C) Watkins (whu, NEW) Jota (bha, WOL)

    1. Bojam
      • 6 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

Think I'd go A. Might be slightly biased since they're both in my team. But Watkins has the fixtures and Son has form.
The -4 puts me off B. And I'd take Son over Jota so not C.

Is it too much if I do Zaha to Jota while I already have Salah?

Because I just don't have any idea for 7.0 mid bracket and I also have Grealish.

No. The double up could work well. With caveats about Jota not being a nailed on starter. Can still deliver points off the bench though.

I bought him in for Salah last week and regret it a little as Man City have looked pretty poor, a bit of a panic move on my part which has been typical of my season. At the same time he has the ability to rack up regular points and I'm hoping having Sterling and Aguero back for this upcoming run of fixtures will help, and maybe a bit of a bounce back. I saw most of the Spurs game and he was their main threat by a distance, could easily have had a goal and assist on another day.

      I don’t think Spurs vs Lions will be 0-0, 1-0, or 0-1....

In a 2-2, 2-1, or 1-2 game, there is goal threat for both Kane and Ziyech
