Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them, they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with regular Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to captaincy picks.

Our trio of top managers will be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season – and only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in full.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

Having previously provided general advice for FPL managers ahead of the upcoming campaign, discussed proven assets v Fantasy gambles, mused on the importance of a strong bench and debated the importance of team value, our panel are now asked about their strong suit: how to target a top 10k finish.

LATERISER SAID…

This is such a tricky question and I don’t really know how to answer it but let me give it a go. Firstly, you need to determine what your own skillset and temperament is like. Are you good at playing a stat-focused game or an eye-test game? Are you comfortable playing a high variance game (which is dependent on your risk appetite)? Take advantage of your own skillset and temperament and play the game you’re comfortable with (it doesn’t have to be black or white).

Once that is out of the way, don’t presume that this season is going to be similar to the previous one. Every campaign in FPL is very unique and you need to try having no biases from the previous season going into the new one. Methods that worked for you last year might not necessarily work for you this time around.

So after every week, you need to take a step back and think macro and strategy while making your moves. FPL is such a dynamic game that one week is a very long time and a lot of moving parts are there which you need to be on top of.

The most important tip, in my opinion, is that nothing really increases your chances of success in this game more than good old groundwork and research. This game has become more and more popular over the years and the managers we are competing with in FPL are armed with more and more information. This means that you need to go more than the extra yard to gain an advantage on your competition, which means reading more articles, doing your own research, watching highlights carefully, visiting fan forums, etc. This is always going to be the most important factor in giving you a chance of finishing in the top 10k once you’ve determined the style of play you’re comfortable with.

TOM SAID…

Firstly, the game is much, much harder nowadays. Even the casuals will be aware of the Double and Blank Gameweeks, so I’m not sure setting yourself a top 10k target from a pool of 8m+ players is such a good idea. I’d argue that a top 50k finish is perhaps more realistic, and let’s be honest, the difference between the two is often a couple of big captaincy calls going your way, or maybe your Triple Captain firing. Sometimes you’ll get lucky, sometimes you won’t; that’s just the way it goes.

However, to hit those really high finishes, planning is essential. Try and visualise how you want your team to look a few weeks down the line, paying careful attention to captaincy and any big fixture swings. As a result, it should at least ensure you don’t have to take any unnecessary hits ahead of a deadline.

Knowing when to react to the development of teams in shorter spells is also important, too: always ask yourself if they are the real deal or have they simply benefitted from an easier run of fixtures?

Also, ensure you put enough time aside to watch games and analyse data, so that you can at least form your own opinions rather than count on others.

ZOPHAR SAID…

With the number of FPL users growing each year, achieving a top 10k finish is only getting more difficult. With the game so popular and information so widely available, players are well aware of Double/Blank Gameweeks and there are so many resources to aid them in their planning for the same. Simply picking the popular template players used to be a viable strategy early on but this would probably only get you a 30-40k finish these days, not in the top 10k.

To get there now, you need to move onto the next bandwagon before the crowd. There’s no point transferring a player in after a haul, as the masses would already have caught onto him and there won’t be any significant gains to be had as most people around your rank would already own him. For this, it is necessary to think forward. Look at when the fixtures are favourable for a player and bring him in ahead of that run, rather than waiting for him to deliver.

You also need a few differentials in your squad to make up ground. If you are near 70-80% of the template, then the gains are going to be steady and not significant. A few punts on low-owned players, say under 10% ownership, could propel you up the ranks if they deliver. I would say the last 10 weeks are a good time to look for differentials, not early doors. In the first half of the season, it is better to go with the trusted, proven picks, and by the second half, we usually have enough information to ascertain which players are going under the radar.

    Which option do you prefer?

    A) Wilson and 4.5 def (Fofana?)
    B) Bamford and 4.0 def

Option A, but Better options than Wilson in 7.5 range...Antonio, Watkins etc...Antonio is looking sharp in preseason...also lot of better nailed on 4.5 options (Veltman, white etc)

      Get bamford gw3 onwards

Would appreciate thoughts on my Team

    Goal Keepers: Sanchez/Foster

Defenders: TAA-Digne-Shaw-White-Ayling(I will rotate White and Ayling depending on the fixture but one of them will always be playing for the first 6)

Midfielders: Salah-Fernandes-Son-Raphina-(Brownhill fodder option, seems to be the most picked 4.5m mid in the game)

    Strikers: Watkins-Toney-(Davis Fodder)

Interesting. Guess depends somewhat on Cancelo's minutes and how Everton fare defensively.

Personally I think that Raphina might be slightly overated by RMT and Buendia slightly under given fixtures. But Villa without Grealish perhaps a wait and see.

Now this is looking better - the wild punts have been removed (Dele Alli, Aubameyang), 442 mainly, but 343 and 352 do-able.
Yes there are a couple of "hopefully" picks in there, but I think it's looking set
    (although maybe not?)

    Pickford / Begovic
    Dias / Wan-Bisakka / Coufal / White / Amartey
    Salah / Son / Sancho / Havertz / Gilmout
    Calvert-Lewin / Watkins / King

That'll do - unless that bloke moves from North London to the North West, then it's re-think time

That's the weak link - pretty confident on the others (even if Gilmour is only going to provide 2 pts per game).442 mostly, so may well have another 5.5 forward by August 12th

Would your thoughts on starting either Chilwell, Havertz or Toney change if I mentioned that Zaha is possibly under an injury cloud? No Zaha traditionally means worse Palace defence.

Depends. I've shed all but 2 (Salah, Bruno) from Liverpool, United and City, so I'm on both Chilwell and Havertz. I'd be on Toney too if I needed to find any more cash. I don't fear Palace v Chelsea anyway - it's the following games that I'm less confident of. I suspect most others would say no Zaha doesn't really interfere with their plans.

Son as a forward is an excellent choice, at some point I do see myself bringing him in the team.

Too many question marks still. Doubt transfer will be completed by start of season, so may not start for either City or Spurs for opening game. A lot of money to be sat on bench. Opening game is not ideal for captaincy even if starts.

Risk of rotation at City in any event, may get extended break and slowly work up minutes plus still not looking completely fit.

I'm happy to wait and make a couple of transfers ' hits to bring him in if opens on fire and looks essential.

I got what I consider a well balanced team, with Kane & Salah. Meant no Bruno, also.
If you maybe downgraded Robbo & shared the spare around the defence, would look nicer. Understand his appeal though. If LFC get their act together - oof

Ah, that helps clarify. Far from template, which I both like and find a bit concerning. Easier to move from TAA and Fernandes then try to bring them if they hit the ground running. Not enough Pool for me.

Have posted this before. Salah, IMO, is past his best. Just that his best is so much better than pretty much everyone else, that even though he is past his best he is still a top player.

You can be in decline, but still better than the majority. Bit like Federer in tennis. He is past his best, but he still makes QFs and SFs of Grand Slams.

City & Liverpool couldn’t be more different FPL wise. City’s midfielders are gold; Liverpool’s are useless.

I’m a Liverpool fan What did our best, highest profile midfielders contribute?

    - Fabinho: 0 goals, 0 assists
    - Wijnaldum: 2 goals, 0 assists
    - Henderson: 1 goals, 1 assist
    - Thiago: 1 goal, 0 assists
    - Keita: 0 goals, 0 assists

4 goals and 1 assist. So 5 goal contributions in total and half the goals were from the departed Gini. Compare that with City:

    ManC

    - Gundogan: 13 goals, 2 assists
    - KDB: 6 goals, 12 assists
    - Silva: 2 goals, 6 assists
    - Rodri: 2 goals, 2 assists
    - Fernandinho: 0 goals, 2 assists

23 goals, 25 assists. FORTY-EIGHT goal contributions, and they are adding Grealish...

Ah but we compensate through the better contribution of our forwards! No, we don't:

    LFC

    - Salah: 22 goals, 5 assists
    - Mané: 11 goals, 7 assists
    - Jota: 9 goals, 0 assists
    - Firmino: 9 goals, 7 assists
    - Minamino: 1 goals, 0 assists
    - Origi: 0 goals, 0 assists

52 goals, 19 assists, 71 goal contributions in total.

    ManC

    - Sterling: 10 goals, 7 assists
    - Mahrez: 9 goals, 6 assists
    - Foden: 9 goals, 5 assists
    - Jesus: 9 goals, 4 assists
    - Aguero: 4 goals, 1 assist

41 goals, 23 assists. 64 goal contributions in total. Our forwards provide slightly more (7) than ManC's but in no way make up the shortfall of 43. And ManC are looking to add last seasons golden boot winner and top assister in the league.

Summary: City have so much to choose from but Liverpool only have Salah. But at least you know he’ll start. But bloody hell, we need an attacking midfielder.

    1. diesel001
      • 9 Years
      4 years, 4 months ago

It is not a fair comparison. Liverpool's midfield is functional - they win the ball back, get it to the full-backs or front three and let them do the damage. City's midfield is creative - they look to open the game up for the forwards, but in return the full backs are more defensive.

City are more of a goal machine than Liverpool, but Liverpool have more than enough goals in them. It is 'defense' that wins you Championships. That is why Liverpool signed VVD and Man City signed Dias. A returning VVD, if close to his best, will be a significant uplift to Liverpool.

I would agree that loosing van Dijk, pulling Fabinho and Henderson back, disrupted entire team, but Liverpool were stopped many times last season. They need something from the middle too, not just from the flanks, imo. Firmino's form is crucial there.

We only need an attacking midfielder if you want FPL points

And if you include the full-backs, where we hugely out-perform Citeh, you'll see we don't necessarily need goals from midfield.

How much stock do you put into points per match?

Both Stones and Rudiger had a high PPM last season (5.8 and 4.9)

Chilwell had a PPM of 5.1

In fact the highest PPM amongst defenders is dominated by City and Chelsea players.

With that comes the caveat of rotation but surely basing your defence around these is not a bad idea?

Any midfielder or striker posting those kind of numbers would be seen as must have at 6m or less.

Raphina and Harrison for example both had a PPM of 4 4 and are both seen as good choices.

It's a good barometer for players who are relatively nailed but weren't available for the full season (e.g. Raphinha), but but poor fixtures (Chelsea) and rotation risk (Stones) take precedence for me.

I don't know if I see Stones as a big rotation risk. CBs don't get rotated nearly as much, and there's been a buzz the last month about Laporte leaving the club.

I'm not starting with Stones because I don't feel confident about him playing GW1 and possibly 2. Would rather start the season with the TAA/Robbo combo and ride those first six fixtures before re-evaluating going into week 7 after Chelsea have finished their sleigh ride through hell. Further, the window will have closed by then and the question of Laporte's future will also have been answered.

but I'm also becoming more and more convinced that I don't know anything about this silly game.

Stones was benched 5 times between GWs 21 and 30 last season, and even if Laporte leaves then Pep might rotate Stones with Ake anyway.

Wasn't City dealing with some massive fixture congestion by that juncture? The combination of COVID rescheduling, FA Cup, Champions League certainly played some role.

Ake will get some number of minutes greater than zero, but how much of him did you really see before the fixture list got tight and City had put some distance between them and the chasing pack in the league?

I'm not trying to convince anybody that Stones is going to play 35 out of 38 weeks, I just think that he's a more reliable asset than the 10-game sample you cite would suggest.

Agreed - once he gets back to pre-Euros fitness he'll be reliable until the fixture list gets tighter. But the Champions League group stage starts before GW 5, and I don't like players who are transfers out waiting to happen when there are more explosive and sustainable options in TAA/Robbo/Shaw/Digne.

This is the exact reason why I fear having Stones from the beginning. I remember that Pep didn´t start players with short summer break two years ago early. Some started gw3 or gw4 imo, but not certain. For gw1 White can easily cover Stones but handling rotation after during next two weeks is an issue. AWB or even 5.5 Che def might be decent option if I start without Bruno.

I think a defensive trio of TAA, Stones, and Rudiger (I like Reece James) is a good investment. It's basically where I plan to go with WC once Chelsea get past their early season thicket of tough fixtures.

I put a lot. Having someone like Stones (if he is pretty regular starter also this season) over Dias for example is worth it imo. The issue is that there can´t be too many players who are regularly rotated, but I believe that having Stones+White is better choice than having Dias + 4.0. I haven´t calculated the stats, but I believe my gut feeling is correct. And something like this seems to be the case when people have calculating best dead teams with hindsight. Having one good attacking def with high ppg and decent cheap first sub is very viable strategy imho. Actually having even four premium defs (TAA + 3x 5.5 this year) is a strategy worth considering. Pretty often at least one of them hauls.

Wonder what price Varane will be? Might be worth a punt at say 5.5m. Can see him being a bap magnet.

Any news about shaw starting? I know telles is injury but won't shaw need time off with the broken ribs and all?
