We assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) credentials of new Aston Villa midfielder Leon Bailey (£6.5m) in our latest Scout Report.

The Villans struck a deal with Bayer Leverkusen moments after their friendly win over Bristol City on Saturday with the club announcing their new arrival earlier today.

The Jamaican winger’s capture follows the signings of Emiliano Buendía (£6.5m) and Ashley Young (£5.0m), although Jack Grealish (£8.0m) is seemingly heading out of Villa Park and bound for Manchester City.

Bailey scored 39 goals and supplied a further 26 assists during his time in Germany as well as playing in both the Champions League and Europa League.

Villa head coach Dean Smith said:

Leon is a hugely exciting young striker with great pace and creativity.  He has enjoyed a successful career at Leverkusen and we are now looking forward to watching him show his skills and talents for Aston Villa in the Premier League.

The addition of Bailey suggests it will be an exciting season at Villa Park, but what exactly will he bring to Dean Smith’s side and where does he fit in?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions and assess his potential FPL worth in the article below.

THE HISTORY

Bailey started out in Jamaica at footballing school Phoenix All-Star Academy before heading to Europe in search of a club.

Having tried his luck in Austria, Germany and the Netherlands, the youngster impressed during a trial at KRC Genk. However, the Belgian side were unable to offer him a contract due to FIFA restrictions on signing under-16 players.

Without a club, Bailey returned to the Caribbean, but his break arrived soon after when he signed for Austrian side FC Liefering and then Slovakian outfit AS Trenčín.

Such was his level of performance that he was then snapped up by Genk, where he swiftly became a fixture in the starting XI and went on to win the Belgian Young Footballer of the Year award in 2015/16, before Bayer Leverkusen paid €20m for his services in January 2017.

Having spent several months getting used to his new surroundings, he lit up the Bundesliga in his first full season in Germany, registering nine goals and six assists as he was named Newcomer of the Year by the VDV, Germany’s version of the PFA, and was also included in the Bundesliga Team of the Season.

Despite a slight dip in the two seasons that followed, Bailey rediscovered his best form in 2020/21, bagging 15 goals and setting up a further 11 in all competitions.

BAILEY’S BUNDESLIGA RECORD AT BAYER LEVERKUSEN:

StartsSub AppsGoalsAssists
2016/170800
2017/1825596
2018/1921851
2019/20121053
2020/2125598

Above stats from WhoScored

At international level, Bailey has had something of a rocky relationship with the Jamaican football association, but finally made his senior debut against Honduras in June 2019 and has since gone on to represent his country on 10 occasions.

THE PROSPECTS – AND WHERE DOES HE FIT IN AT VILLA?

“Leon, like all players at Phoenix academy, are developed to play at all three points of attack. He can play on both feet; cut in from the right and onto his left; cut in from the left onto his right. He can play on both sides of the pitch. His favourite position is right wing but he will do whatever’s in the best interest of the team. Leon is superb at free-kick, dead-ball and corner situations.” – Craig Butler, stepfather and agent

Bailey is an extremely quick and versatile attacker who is comfortable playing on either flank.

However, he predominantly featured on the right wing of a 4-3-3 formation at Leverkusen last season, where he was able to cut inside onto his stronger left foot.

Buendia isn't exactly unproven. Created a ton of chances last time he was in the league with Norwich. He's improved since then and is playing for a better team now.

Raphinha is of course a great option but I'm going to attack the fixtures at the start.

Anyone just tempted to pick a team for the first 3x gameweeks, and then wildcard during the international break once transfers have been finalised and you've got a couple of weeks to identify a bit of form? I usually end up wildcarding early anyway and I do wonder if there's an upside to just leaning into that and attacking good early fixtures for Villa, Everton etc.

I personally like to set my team out with the long run in mind, and just use FT’s when necessary. Last season I never saw the need to WC and held it up until Christmas (admittedly I wasn’t all that engaged in the game). The downside of that being that come seasons end your team value isn’t as high as those who WC early, but I just never brought into the idea of locking a side into an early WC.

I never set out to wildcard early. But almost every season I end up using it early anyway.

Could save 2 transfers for this and then make a couple of moves if needed (i.e. moving out 2x Liverpool players for Leicester or Spurs)

This might be the smartest tactic to be honest.
      1) Set up for GW1-3 only.
      2) Use your first two free transfers to chase the price increase players.
3)WC for GW4 with a budget likely over £100m and more data to make a better squad.
      4) ???
      5) Profit £££

    4. Miguel Sanchez

Yup - will almost certainly have to WC during the IB before GW4 as I'm BBing in GW1 so my funds distribution will be a bit off.

Just pick players from Villa, Brighton, Everton and Liverpool.

I think the international break after gw7 is the optimal time to wildcard. Chelsea and City will have good fixtures after that (while Utds fixtures get worse) and after 7 weeks we'll have a better idea on where the value players are in the league, who's playing and who's not etc

Because my team is so boringly template, with Sanchez, TAA Digne Bruno Salah Watkins Toney Antonio im looking to fill in 2 differentials in the 3rd and 4th MF spots. Was set on Barnes but doubts are putting me off. Currently on 7.5 Greenwood and 7.0 Maddison. 2 punts with upside, for 3-4 GW’s. Any better options? Potentially Gundo?

Nothing wrong with template especially at the start. E.g less than 10% of teams will have your exact forward line. Template picks are good for a reason, they're good picks

    Sanchez

Salah • Mahrez • Jota • Raphina (Brownhill)
    Cavani* • Watkins • Antonio

Would really like to shoehorn Chilwell in there. Cavani downgrade seems like the way to go, but then I have no Utd whatsoever.

    A. Cavani > Wilson/Nacho + Digne > Chilwell and keep £0.5itb for early bandwagons
    B. Cancelo > Chilwell + Digne > Stones
    C. Keep as it is and get Chilly down the line when I WC

Probably not relevant for fpl or real life, but the last football manager I played, think it was FM 2019, Bailey was an absolute beast of a player.

FM is normally pretty good when it comes to setting the future stars.

Sorry to say it again but it’s just inportant to me and want to hear more comments

One thing I consider in picking my team is other’s teams.
For example, I believe liverpool is strong at the back. Specially with vvd back. But everyone owns TAA. What is the difference between me and others? Nothing.
So I add Robbo. Now it seems I have 1 liverpool defender.
Same goes for man utd and shaw. Everyone owns him and they got varane too. Previously owned henderson but he may not start.
So I add awb to have a utd defender more than others.
    Thoughts?

      Tbh, I don't think there's a lot of difference.

Robbo and Trent have similar potential barring perhaps a 5 GW purple which Trent might hit at some point in the season. But if you use the 0.5m wisely you can mitigate that risk.

Shaw and AWB are even closer IMO. Mainly because of Shaw's injury record though.

          Sorry. Misread that.
          I like the strategy.
I wouldn't personally commit to a third Liverpool or United player until I know where the points are.
But if you are right about them improving defensively then you're in for a good season.
If not, they're easy to downgrade anyway.

Magnus Carlsen likes this strategy a lot. He very often brings in both the template choice, plus a team-mate who may remain differential for a while because many are reluctant to double up.

In stock market terminology, if most people own 1 Liverpool defender, then effectively:
2 Liverpool defenders = being "long" Liverpool defence
1 Liverpool defender = neutral position
0 Liverpool defenders = being "short" Liverpool defence

Who is the best forward up to 6.5 other than Toney?
I’m keeping an eye on Rodrigo in the next 2 preseason games, he’s been getting decent minutes so far this preseason and looks a chance to get decent minutes. Fabio Silva could be an option later in the season, especially if new manager deploys a 4-4-2. But other then that who’s an option?

I'm hoping another 6.5 forward option becomes available. Staying away from Toney at the beginning until i see how he does. If Abraham moves somewhere or Rodrigo gets game time that would be ideal. A 6.5 fwd seems to fit the "template" better.

Price rises tend to be most volatile at the start with the most amount of active players, the first game is Friday night if he blanks he could be due a drop straight away

GW2 will be important, blank in that GW will probably result in mass sell.

I reckon he's getting a .1 blank before gw2 even starts if he blanks, it won't be him blanking Vs arsenal or his next fixture that will be the main reason though, it will be because there will be players that people don't have that have scored big in gw1 and everyone will rush to get them. Knee jerk and millions of active players

Terrible player but the fixtures are there.

Price wont be affected much if he flops.

Don't think so, Brentford are more enterprising and more attacking, Toney is on pens and also gets assists

Arsenal showing interest in Martinez as they know Spurs are selling Kane and will be in the market for a premium striker and want the price nice and high.

As a MUN fan I'm really concerned that there'll be a repeat of Palace in our first game last season...Leeds will be far fitter than our lot!
If our opening fixtures were a little trickier I'd go without MUN assets, I might still do but will definitely avoid our defence for a little while at least. Surprised that so many are going with Shaw early doors myself.

Think Utd will have a terrible start. OGS gone in Oct/Nov, someone like Poch or whoever is flavour of the month will come in and they will be pretty good from then on.

        Question

How many of your squad did you hold for a significant time last season. I'm on 6 plus Jiminez who I've owned for 90% of his FPL career. I'm working on the basis that picking the right squad early is essentially a crap shoot and that what matters is getting in enough players I won't be tempted to transfer out at the first sign of trouble. "Season keepers" only work if you do keep them

        Trust matters?

My trusted 7 - I can hold these boys indefinitely

TAA Shaw Mo Son Raph Bamford Jiminez

My doubted 4 - the ones I'll happily bin

        Pickford Digne Havertz Benrahma

Think I've held Digne 3 separate times for a grand total of 6 game weeks. I'll be in bonus territory if he's still there game week 3 😉

Going all out this time with the double Everton defence. Upside there but that's one call that may change.

            Of course he is

But he's fit and has been since May and looking good in preseason and a talisman on pens. I regard him in the same way as others look on TAA - team not complete without him 🙂

Also happen to think the other 7.5s are all overrated especially when selected on fixtures.

I had Emi Martinez from GW2 until GW31, same pretty much with Grealish. They were absolute gems. Also had DCL/Fernandes for quite a long time.

If I had had Emi last season he could well be in my squad now - only experienced the downside with him. On that basis he's one I'd move on likely if he started to fail early.

Grealish would be in here if the transfer talk wasn't about. Was one of the first on my teamsheet.

Mine were all gone by GW9. I only kept two players on my GW9 WC, and they weren't in my GW1 team. (Salah came back in shortly afterward once he recovered from COVID.)

Oh my week 1 lot were gone early last time

I imagine most of these will go too this time sooner than I hope. Not kidding myself that they will all be the same assets again of that I will hold and hold and hold.

The distinction for me is that most of them I'll confidently hold to week 6/7 or so come what may and that will prevent early WC - high priority for me this season.

KdB, Mahrez, Gundo all 30. They probably realise they need to refresh over the next 4 windows and would rather integrate than overhaul. And they will probably get Kane anyway, but many of their mids can operate false 9 anyways.

Template optically looks good but its essentially:

Liverpool + United + a bunch of mid table picks that outperformed last year.

Issues that will look obviously wrong in hindsight.
        No City
        No Chelsea
The glaring hole which is the lack of slots made available for 7-10m midfielders.
