Many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) plans were thrown into disarray on Wednesday evening when Aston Villa announced the surprise signing of Southampton forward Danny Ings (£8.0m).

It was something of a throwback to how transfer business used to get done, with no news or rumours reported by a single journalist.

With all eyes on Jack Grealish’s (£8.0m) imminent departure to Manchester City, the Villans threw us a curveball by confirming the capture of Ings for a fee believed to be an initial £25m plus add-ons.

The 29-year-old forward joins summer recruits Leon Bailey (£6.5m), Emiliano Buendía (£6.5m) and Ashley Young (£5.0m) at Villa Park.

Villa head coach Dean Smith said of Ings’ capture:

“Danny is an outstanding Premier League footballer who has scored goals wherever he has played. He is also a top professional with a great character who will be a leader in our squad and a role model for our rapidly developing young Academy players who are now in and around the first team. I am delighted to welcome Danny to our great Club.”

Ings’ move to B6 is a significant one for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers that may well have ramifications for Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) too, which we’ll explore in our latest Moving Target report below.

INGS’ PROFILE AND STATS

SouBur Sunday

First and foremost, Ings is a proven goalscorer.

In fact, only Harry Kane (£12.5m), Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Jamie Vardy (£10.5m) have scored more across the last two Premier League seasons.

During that time, he has overperformed his expected goal (xG) totals in both campaigns, with an impressive goal conversion rate of 21.1% in 2020/21.

However, he also offers more to the team in his all-round game.

He will often pull out wide or drop deeper in an attempt to pick out runners with a pass, which could be good news for the likes of Bailey and Watkins.

Above: Danny Ings 2020/21 touch heat map

Injuries were a problem for Ings in the past, but he has only missed 11 Premier League games across the last two seasons.

INGS’ PREMIER LEAGUE RECORD:

SeasonClub    Appearances   Goals   Assists
2014/15Burnley35 (0)114
2015/16Liverpool6 (3)20
2016/17Liverpool0 (0)00

2018/19Southampton24 (1)73

WHERE DOES INGS FIT IN AT VILLA AND WHAT DOES HIS ARRIVAL MEAN FOR WATKINS?

Chatter about Origi being a Southampton target after the departure of Ings. Origi could be a nice option at 5.0.

Anyone else think this sounds like a good option?

      Yes he is.

Pukki wasn't actually picked by many people that year from the start because he had Liverpool in GW1. We only started picking him up after he hit a hat-trick against Newcastle in GW2.

It's almost exactly like that haha.

I'm still a bit miffed I didn't go for Bamford last year. I really thought Rodrigo would take his spot. If that move didn't happen I would very likely have had him.

I started off with Rodrigo too.

            Quickly changed him to Bamford.

Sadly, did not apply the same expediency with Werner though.

lots of tap in and pens from what i could tell in the highlights reel. wont be getting chances like that in the premier league.
in his defence he has Vardy like stats going up through the leagues so no reason to think he has hit his ceiling.

        His ceiling is high.

But Newcastle United sold him years ago, so either they got it very wrong or they knew something all the way back then that we'll find out this season.

Messing around trying to see if I could make a decent draft including Kane and Lukaku (assuming he's no more than 11m)

    Pickford (Begovic)
    TAA Shaw 4.5 (4.5 4.0)
    Raphinha Son Sancho ESR 5.0
    Kane Lukaku [Vardy+0.5itb] 5.0

Obviously price fluctuations could hammer possibilities of something like this but still leaves room for manoeuvre, 5.0 fwd could be Origi if he moves, or could become 4.5 fwd and then 5.0 mid becomes 5.5, Pickford could be downgraded, etc.

Yeah I don't think I'm doing this. One premium forward only unless Salah gets injured or somehow becomes useless.

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

Yeah it's not ideal having 2 premiums up front but if Lukaku does join Chelsea I don't see many other attackers I'd regard as being nailed except for Mount (and even then it'll still happen with him), and it'll be very hard to not have Kane if he goes to City once he's up and running. Obvious issue here is no Liverpool attacker, I wasn't planning on keeping Salah for long after the start so I might not mind this but definitely don't see many going with no Bruno or Salah. I think I prefer it this way though with more premiums so more have to make bigger choices regarding where to put their money but there'll inevitably be some unexpected value options that will appear too.

Tricky one. I think Mahrez is a great pick even with the rotation risk. He did start 9 out of city's first 11 games last season. Raph I prefer to wait on until GW5.

1G 1A vs Leciester & hattrick vs Burnley

Can Ings not just stay at one club and make that teams strike force an FPL no go zone.

Problem with Ings is he’ll score a couple early doors, then blank for a few weeks, then get injured. And repeat across 38 GWs. Thereby making any forward partners a non-nailed option.

Sadly Watkins will suffer as a result of this transfer.

    1. Dr. Rog
      • 16 Years

good transfer. otherwise Watkins was auto pick.

the game needs a diversity of options otherwise its just boring

Agreed on diversity, but just have an issue with Ings, screwing up FPL assets everywhere he goes.

    2. Rainer
      • 9 Years

Watkins is naturally a LW/LF so he'll still be a serious FPL option. Good creativity behind them with another CM/AM still to come in.

It's probably a good thing that Watkins will be further down the pen order and, as you say when Ings gets crocked, Watkins will be back leading the line.

Just thinking about Ings, it's tempting.

Clocking some minutes in pre season, that's good. He's should start straight away, imo. The unsettled attack doesn't trouble me that much - he's got Buendia behind him, and he scores even from hard positions, so some kind of an attacking flow and tactics doesn't affect him much. Injury prone - well the idea of most people was to get rid of Watkins anyway after the first three.

I don't think Watkins will suffer that much. He's not an out and out striker anyway, he drifts out wide many times during the game. He's probably nailed on the left wing and when Ings gets crocked he'll play as a striker, that's how I see the situation.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 13 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

Watkins will suffer in FPL terms, not football. He's a reverse-OOP, like Werner being shifted out wide - good for the team but worse for FPL. Anyway, I've ditched Watkins and got Ings. Sorted.

    4. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years

A few in the first few weeks will be fine since that's when they have their best fixtures. Smith will know he'll have to rotate him though anyway with his injury history so I can still see Watkins a good few games over the season up top, plus there's still the likes of El Ghazi and Traore there vying for spots on the wing

Simply looking at attacking returns here without baps and clean sheets

TAA got 41% of his attacking returns between 28 and 38 last season (under a third of the season)
Mane got 42% of his in the same period

Lots appear to be relying on late season form to be an indicator of better TAA this time (though cs also big issue of course). But some pointer perhaps on these figures that there may be someone else who might revert to 2019/20 form if that run is meaningful.

Caveat is of course week 38 brace might skew picture. Also Mane was no better in taking big chances late season than over the season as a whole - he just got slightly more of them.

Another caveat for both of them - this was a run of exceedingly soft fixtures.

Liverpool have their winning team back. First-choice defence - knock-on effect being first -choice midfield. Due to injuries, Fabinho, Thiago and Henderson never got to play a full team together. Unless/until they are hit by key injuries to first team regulars, they should be a force.

I'm not sure that expensive defense is wise especially since Chilwell and Cancelo are a bit risky to start the season with and you have weak cover.

    Dear cleverer people than me,

Grealish at 8m is quite a cheap way into the City goal machine.

If you have half decent subs (eg 2 x 4.5m miracle defenders) to cover his absences...

.. does this make him worth having?

Mahrez has the upper hand at the moment. Why wait for Grealish when you have Mahrez ready and firing. Besides, Mahrez faces less competition on the right, with Sterling (?) probably the one that threatens him. Grealish has competition from Foden and Gundogan for the left wing and inside left.

          Mahrez last season:

          - 27 premier league appearances (23 starts, 4 subs)
          - 17 Blanks in those 27 appearances (13 starts, 4 subs)
          - 17 returns in his other 10 appearances (all 10 were starts)

I.e. he returned in 10 games, and didn’t return in the other 28

          Mahrez bulls think:
          (a) Pep will start him vs Spurs & Norwich
          (B) City will smash Spurs & Norwich
          (c) Mahrez will be more involved in the smashing than the player(/s) they're omitting for him (aided by things like 17 returns in 10 specific games last season, and possibly/probably being on penalties)

          Mahrez bears think:
          (a) his track record for appearances is patchy & his track record for scoring points when he does appear is quite volatile (17 Blanks in 27 appearances last season)
          (b) Man City may not even score a lot of goals to start the season - they were quite goal shy for the first half or so of last season
          (c) There are many other lower risk options who offer a lot in the early gameweeks without the same uncertainties attached to them

You need to decide which camp you’re in!

Very interesting read, it does appear that Mahrez is Mr Patchy. I currently have in my draft with the understanding of shipping him out GW3.

Who would be better lower risks, I really like Barnes but as we all know not sure if he starts?

I have Raph, Sancho and Buendia already in my draft.

            Thanks

See what Harrison did last season among City mids? They've added one more to the roulette without selling any (as things stand). None of his new competition has suddenly become bad. It's a clear avoid for me until an injury crisis or clear favourites emerge

And this is if they don't get Kane, which just kills the false 9 slot that helped with more starts across the board

If I'm going there, it's Gundo or Mahrez short term because they've had preseason behind them, which is an advantage for 1 to 3 GWs

City can effectively start 5 “attackers” (for FPL purposes) in any given game (put forwards, wingers, 10’s & 8’s all together for estimation)

That gives a total pool of available starts of 190 for a full season (38 games x 5 slots)

Last season - City’s starts (vs apps in brackets) across their “attackers” comes out to 182, which is pretty close - when Pep plays 3 centrebacks it removes one of the 5 so it’s a bit less than 190, but close

      Sterling - 28 (31)
      Mahrez - 23 (27)
      Foden - 17 (28)
      Torres - 15 (24)
      Jesus - 22 (29)
      Bilva - 24 (26)
      KDB - 23 (25)
      Gundo - 23 (28)
      Kun - 7 (12)
      Total starts = 182

If you add Grealish and remove Kun, it just doesn’t look good for anyone on that list to start more than 25 games imo

Certainly not to start more than 30 (I think at KDB’s age now even he will struggle to go above 30 starts)

Especially when you factor in that Foden & Torres surely aren’t going to get *less* starts than last year - that leaves even less of the pool available for others to share.

Linearly, those 9 players sharing 190 starts comes out at 21 each, so I think pretty much all of them will be operating in the 20-25 starts ballpark

It’s just hard to see how it’s wise going near any of these guys without an injury bottleneck or something of that ilk that clearly signposts who is going to be starting for an extended period of time

There is an argument for getting both Grealish and Foden if you have a decent bench

If Pep continues with not subbing them for cameos, and bench is around 5.0 - 5.5 it could be interesting.

Only problem is Nacho getting rotated and Ings eating into Watkins minutes.

Potential Mahrez benching in GW2 makes me stay away from him. Pep could use this Norwich game to give gametime to those who haven't had a preseason. Second guessing Pep doesn't work usually but it wouldn't be surprising to see Ferran/Foden get some gametime there.

Thoughts on this team guys ?

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Digne
    Salah Bruno Mahrez Raphinha Sarr
    Antonio Toney
    (Foster White Obafemi 4.0)

Surprising that's it's actually so similar to the first draft I made one month ago:

Very good. Not much to dislike. There's some uncertainty over Shaw starting.

Sanchez also with a weird 'injury' but otherwise we have very similar teams so naturally I'll rate it highly 🙂

      1. Karan_G14
        • 9 Years

Ideally I wanted a 3rd Liverpool player and a Villa attacker but I'm just not being able settle on those options.

I think if Shaw starts Everton friendly we're good to go otherwise I'll replace him. If Sanchez not fit then I will get Bachmann.

The only 3rd Liverpool player I'd consider is Jota (maybe Mane if you're brave and don't go Fernandes). Definitely don't want double defense given the uncertainty and high cost of Robbo.

I think I may go Bachmann over Sanchez anyway. More saves. Sanchez is 6 points or 2 points for every game.

I've been put off Jota since I read Klopp saying Bobby looks fit after returning to training. 4 at the back just looks too inflexible to me with Robbo so I've discounted him also.

Same team but with Bachmann, Stones, ESR, Ayling over Sanchez, Digne, Sarr, 4m fodder

Also have a Son variant that uses the 2mln saving to invest in 7.5 forward and Buendia for the first 3, but Im leaning away from it as its a little harder to get to Kane when the value is more dispersed

Looking for two 4.5 defenders who can both play GW2-3 so I can bench Arsenal.

Ayling still edges it, as bad as things may seem for now. Everton might score, but don't really have the engine room to overwhelm Leeds

        Veltman - White/Chambers - Ayling works best for a three-way two-slot rotation

Or just permastart Veltman for 8 GWs and take the 6-pointers and blanks on the chin 🙂

The guy was fit as an ox too, and covid did for him.

It’s a personal choice, of course, but I’m genuinely grateful I had my first jab before I caught it as I’m convinced this would have happened to me otherwise, and I’m nowhere remotely as fit and healthy as this guy was.

I had with 3 other players a draft yesterday. What do you think about my team?
          Sanchez, Raya
          TAA, Shaw, Tierney, Mitchell, Veltman
          Salah, Sancho, Raphinha, Maddison, Sarr
          Wilson, Jimenez, Watkins

my idea would be to take a cheap striker instead of Watkins (because of the ings transfer) and maybe Pepe, Havertz or Mahrez instead of Maddison
