Pogba’s creativity, Antonio’s xG, DCL’s threat: The key FPL stats for Gameweek 2

Football is back and we could hardly have asked for a better start from a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) perspective.

Goals were flying in all over the place, so I figured I’d start the week with a good stats dive into the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area.

FPL points predictions for Gameweek 3 and beyond 3

WHICH PLAYERS CAUGHT THE EYE?

In terms of expected goal involvement (xGI), Michail Antonio (£7.5m) was the stand-out performer of the round with a 0.58 higher total than second-placed Christian Norgaard (£5.0m).

However, it is worth noting that Antonio’s non-penalty expected goals (non-pen xG) total was just 0.70, and as a result, he ranks eighth in that specific metric.

No player was afforded more big chances (three) than the Hammers’ frontman, but having missed his penalty he may no longer be the designated taker moving forward.

A popular target when the game launched, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) ranks third for non-pen xG (0.94) and no player across all positions took more shots in the box than the Toffees’ striker in Gameweek 1 (five).

Only Kieran Tierney (£5.0m) created more chances than Paul Pogba‘s (£7.6m) five. However, just one of the Frenchman’s five attempted assists was a big chance created and he also fluffed a golden opportunity when put through on goal in the first half.

Adama Traore (£6.0m) really should have got on the scoresheet, too. The pacy winger took four shots in the box and was the biggest xG underperformer (0.81) of the Gameweek. He’s certainly one to monitor if he is going to be used in a similar role by Bruno Lage going forward.

Said Benrahma (6.0m) was a popular pick on the Fantasy Football Scout boards and the Algerian notched an xGI total of 0.51, which does not rank in the top 25 across all positions. He scored from his only shot on target, while the sole chance he created was converted, so he is one to monitor as well.

WHICH PLAYERS NUMBERS ARE CONCERNING?

That’s all for now! We will be delving deeper into this data and more on The FPL Wire tomorrow. All my custom stats tables used in the article can be accessed in the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area, and I’ve linked them below for convenience:

Gundo injury is obviously unfortunate and I hope he is well but it could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for owners.

It just means there's a higher chance that we hear whether he's likely to start from Pep. Would rather know for sure that my City asset won't start than thinking they'll start only to get rouletted

It's a fact that they are trying to get him.

West Ham coach Stuart Pearce has given an update in the Hammers' pursuit of Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard, speaking to TalkSPORT about the club's hopes of signing the England international.

“We would like him to come and join us. That has been an open secret. He was wonderful last year," he told the radio station.

“The ball is in Manchester United’s court. He is contracted to them. We would like him with us, there is no doubt about that."

Even if they don't get him, I think there's enough uncertainty about Benrahma not to bring him in this gameweek. The next fixture isn't great and I still feel like Moyes doesn't completely trust him. Starting the season by chasing 0.1 price rises on players who have big question marks over them usually doesn't work out very well in my experience.

It's a tricky situation if you don't own him but Leicester not the easiest fixture so could hold off another week and reassess.

I imagine it becomes Jesse through the middle and (when they play 4-2-3-1) Benrahma over Fornals on the left. So he could still be a prospect at only 6.0, though minutes might be challenged again.

This is a wild team to me. 2 garbage 4.5 mids when there are some genuinely intriguing or good cheap mids from 6.0 and below. You have so little money in your midfield. It’s the best spot to gamble given the extra points for CSs and goals.

A lot of money in defense and being locked into using 3 Liverpool slots in defense when Tsimikas won’t last long.
Don’t get the logic of it at all. Liverpool are an insanely attacking team - one of the best and now you’re locked out of any of them with multiple transfers.

I’d put money that a team that scored 96 last week would out score this team for the next game day.

      1. Jackie Moon
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

Agreed with comment on 3 pool defenders. Salah is a must.

But disagree with comment on the 4.5 mids. While there are a lot of potential good mid price mids right now we don’t know which ones will perform. I’m playing a 433 for now to allow Son, Salah and Bruno in midfield. Worked well GW1 and now everyone seems to be trying to get Son in. Will bring in mid price mids once game settles and we know who the good cheap options are. Tsimikas and Amartey allows this for a few weeks.

prefer Grealish, but the thing is once the Kane move comes the temptation will be to go to 442 with the big 3, so you cant really afford to house any mids > 6.5

      This is difficult.
The only way I can have Son over Grealish and not destroy my team is to go 442 as I have Salah and Bruno too. Either Grealish and Alli which leaves a 352 or Son with a 4.5 mid and a 442 with Tsimikas and Mbeumo having to start each week.

Yeah 343 or 352 but I usually prefer 352. Grealish over Son side below. I have a lot more cash in defence than you.

          Sánchez

          TAA Shaw Dias

          Salah Bruno Grealish Alli Mbeumo

          DCL Antonio

I’d be surprised if he did. But also folks have a few more days. I was surprised Richarlison went up so quick.

Its a strange week. No pressing need for a transfer.
I guess the template was pretty good, my only differentials are city players who have norwich so i can afford to roll the dice with them

Template smashed it and we're still seeing kneejerkers, wonder how it'll be when everyone has a bad week 😆 we'll find out soon!

Yeah I picked A team then saw the template and went wait why is my team everywhere. It's made my score not feel great cause it feels like everyone has the same team, yet then you look deeper and the template really was only within the hardcore fpl community

Yeah, this was a rare week where almost everyone in the community smashed it - in GW1 too! Will be interesting to see how the community does in the upcoming weeks - GW2 first up with similarly generous fixtures to GW1.

    1. Stones likely to start this week?
    2. Deli Alli - any chance Bergwijn or Moura are dropped so he is moved to a front 3?
On the flip side if Kane were to return could he be dropped altogether if the double pivot of Hojbjerg and Skipp is here to stay?

Dele ali for watford home could work well but he or Loucas Moura ? Thats the problem with spurs

      1. Yes I expect Stones to come in for Ake.
      2. Don't see Alli playing in the front 3 but he could be more of a #10 than a #8 against weaker opposition.

Thanks all. A 10 rather than an 8 sounds like it could happen and I would be happy enough with that. I don’t know about Moura I just can’t see him scoring a lot of FPL points.

      1. Jackie Moon
        • 5 Years

I feel Moura is a far better option than Alli. Moura looked great on the counter as long as Spurs keeping playing that way against weaker opposition. Alli looked like he couldn’t keep up going forward and just sat much deeper than the id like for FPL.

I was keeping an eye out on Alli, seems he was playing quite deep, wouldn't go there yet.

Its also worth mentioning that teams play different when they're against City to when they're against a mid or lower table side. So not much can be said as of yet

If Kane comes back in Id imagine Bergwijn drops out with Son moving left

Is Hoever nailed for Wolves? Plan on bringing him in for Amartey GW4 to cover for Ayling/Veltman who have bad fixtures and Raphinha who is away.

Doubt he's nailed with Semedo there but maybe he could win the spot.

He could be I think it’s Semedo or him for that spot. If he plays the next 2 weeks and lot will have the same plan as you.
If Robbo gets back quicker than we think then Tsimikas to Hoever could work really well.

Free transfers for a lot of megastars to get them off the wage bill. If they go to non-PL clubs, there will be knock-on effects with players losing their places looking for moves.

        • 7 Years

Not sure it will be for free but yeah, I think they will flood the market with their top players and transfers will be low. The agents must be rubbing their hands with glee as we speak. Parasites.

Tough decision between Greenwood and Raphinha as a Gundo replacement (already have Benrahma)

Both posted very similar underlying numbers in GW1

Greenwood - Very good fixtures including Southampton this week, should be nailed for a few weeks at least, could catch onto a price rise

Raphinha - Good upcoming fixtures, first home game for Leeds with a full crowd, very nailed, had a very good record vs Everton last season

Another good thing with Raph is although he could miss GW4 vs Pool, I could very easily bench him for 1 week with White vs Norwich coming on for a 442

      Prefer Greenwood myself
Better FPL output and rather own Harrison from Leeds

      1. Alisson WondHaaland
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

Interesting. Why Harrison? Raph was better than him last season in a per 90 perspective, both in underlying numbers and actual output. Raph on all set pieces too

More from the eye test of watching him last season. Raph is more explosive but didn’t really justify the output in terms of FPL points. Obviously could kick on and score big this season but I do like Harrison

Already have Greenwood. Changed out Gundo for Benrahma. Didn’t like the look of Raph last game. He can maybe come in when he is on form, which he isn’t right now. Preferred the combination of form and fixtures for Benny.

          • 8 Years
          2 years, 8 months ago

Thanks, I think its harsh to judge Raph on that one game, though his underlyings were actually quite good. Also think the home factor is massive atm, a lot of the 'form' teams from GW1 got a big boost from home advantage and this could easily flip in GW2 when they play away (Benrahma is perfect though since he plays at home next).

Regarding Greenwood, just very worried about his minutes in a few weeks time.
