Scout Notes

Is ‘out of position’ Ferran Torres worth the rotation risk in FPL?

We begin our Scout Notes of the weekend’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) matches with analysis of Manchester City’s thrashing of Arsenal.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s action, check out our Scoreboard summary here.

MANCHESTER CITY 5-0 ARSENAL

  • Goals: Ilkay Gundogan (£7.3m), Ferran Torres (£7.0m) x2, Gabriel Jesus (£8.5m), Rodri (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Jesus, Bernardo Silva (£7.0m), Jack Grealish (£8.0m), Torres, Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m)
  • Bonus: Jesus x3, Torres x2, Gundogan x1

‘OOP’ TORRES – RISK v REWARD

£7.0m for an out-of-position midfielder playing up front for the joint-top-scoring Premier League side seems like a no-brainer on paper but Ferran Torres (£7.0m) was owned by fewer than 3% of FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 3, such is the week-to-week wariness around Pep Guardiola and his fondness for rotation.

Two poacher’s goals, an assist and an 18-point haul on Saturday will see his ownership inevitably rise (over 100,000 managers have since snapped him up) but he’s still in differential territory ahead of Gameweek 4.

So is he worth the risk? First, the pros.

City’s inability to sign a striker in the transfer window has left them short up top and if they fail to add to their ranks in the next few days, Torres will continue to see plenty of game-time through the middle.

He’s even someone Guardiola has previously mentioned as being one of the options for the centre-forward role this season and there were further comments from the City boss yesterday on the subject:

“Last season Ferran played exceptionally well as we saw in terms of his numbers – goals and assists. In this position he makes a movement like the best strikers in behind, moving incredibly well. His movement is similar to Jamie Vardy.

“He is very young. Manchester City did a great job buying him for a great price. He is a good finisher and had a goal was disallowed last week, when the finish was perfect.

“I’m very pleased with his movements, work ethic, and he has learned many things as we saw today – we are pleased on many, many levels.” – Pep Guardiola on Ferran Torres

The joy that Gabriel Jesus (£8.5m) is experiencing as a right-winger – he claimed his third assist in two Gameweeks when setting up Ilkay Gundogan’s (£7.3m) headed opener – also seemingly diminishes the competition up front in the short term.

But the start of the UEFA Champions League after the September international break looms large, something that will inevitably see the rotation step up a gear after three successive league starts for Torres.

We still have Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) and Phil Foden (£7.9m) to come back into the fold, too, the former in particular having moonlighted as a ‘false nine’ in 2020/21.

Foden is a good example of what we might expect from Torres in FPL. Last season, the England international started only 17 fixtures and made 11 substitute appearances. Despite a cluster of ‘one-pointers’ off the bench, he still averaged 4.8 points per match – better than the likes of regular starters Raphinha (£6.5m) and Mason Mount (£7.5m).

So owning Torres will bring its rewards but will require a) the nerve to ride out the one-pointers when they inevitably occur and perhaps crucially b) at least one strong, starting substitute to come in whenever Guardiola does his worst. Given the premium options we’re all trying to cram into our sides, that might prove tricky.

CITY MISCELLANY

A second successive attacking return as a substitute for Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) perfectly encapsulates the rollercoaster nature of owning City assets: benchings can happen out of the blue but attacking returns can still easily arrive in a short cameo.

Mahrez created three big chances during his brief time on the pitch, while Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) racked up 10 penalty box touches and two big chances in half an hour.

The points were spread out again, with seven of the eight City midfielders/forwards who featured against the beleagured Gunners delivering an attacking return – Sterling being the exception.

And at the back, City’s only real scare came when a nonchalant Ederson (£6.0m) almost gifted Arsenal an early goal.

The best defence of 2020/21 have conceded only one big chance so far this season, picking up where they left off last year.

TOP OF THE SEASON TICKER, BOTTOM OF THE TABLE

Image

Arsenal are top of our Season Ticker over the next eight Gameweeks, with a favourable run of matches starting in Gameweek 4.

They are also rock-bottom of the Premier League table, goalless and having shipped nine goals in their opening three matches of 2021/22.

There’s been precious little to encourage FPL investment so far but there are mitigating circumstances: the Gunners have arguably just faced two of the best sides in the division, have had their start to the campaign blighted by a coronavirus outbreak, have yet to see arguably their best two centre-halves – Ben White (£4.4m) and Gabriel (£4.5m) – playing in tandem and have been missing Thomas Partey (£5.0m) in the last few weeks.

“We have some players here and hopefully we can get some players back as well. We missed a lot of players in recent weeks, hopefully some of them will be back in decent shape after the international break. It is time to reflect, to look in the mirror, each of us, and try to change the dynamic straight away because we need to pick up results.” – Mikel Arteta

The opening-day Brentford defeat was miserable but it’s worth remembering that they recorded more shots than any other side in Gameweek 1, with the absence of their three first-choice strikers a contributing factor in their failure to put away any of those chances.

Mikel Arteta’s troops were also among the form sides of 2021 before the start of this season; it’s unwise to disregard them completely over the next eight Gameweeks (the battering of West Brom reserves in midweek did illustrate their potential against the lesser lights) but few of us will be considering the double/triple-ups that such a fixture run would usually invite.

Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker (Zinchenko 46), Cancelo, Dias, Laporte, Rodrigo, Gundogan, Bernardo (Sterling 58), Grealish, Torres, Jesus (Mahrez 62).

Arsenal XI: Leno, Cédric Soares, Chambers, Holding, Kolasinac, Tierney, Ødegaard, Smith Rowe, Xhaka, Saka (Elneny 46), Aubameyang (Lacazette 59).

I like, planning to bring in this week myself. I think he is nailed, and has been posting some OK numbers going forward. Will see how they do against United today. Also dropped by 0.1m for some reason, which is a nice little bonus.

Very nearly went with him last week. Not 100% nailed but was a key outlet last game and works well with trincao.
In the end I preferred two spurs 4.5 and Sa in goals

Is this the wildcard template for gw4? What do you think about it?

    4.5 - 4.0 gk
    TAA - 4.5 Wolves defender - Ayling - Livramento - 4.1 def
    Salah - Torres - Benrahma - Gray - 4.5 mid
    Ronaldo - Lukaku - Antonio

Yeah that’s it. I’m no convinced by Gray. Think it looks better with Sarr or Rafinha. TAA sacrificed and some Chelsea defence.

Issue is I really want DCL for Everton’s run of fixtures. Am unclear whether to go down the wildcard route just yet.

This is the way im gonna try and play with 3 premiums.

Salah and Ronaldo essential for me then try and rotate between Lukaku and Kane somehow. Start with Lukaku and try make some money on him first.

Feels like a significant fork in the road moment. Wildcard and get Lukaku and Ronaldo in or just move Ings on for DCL with my FT. What would you do here?

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw White
    Salah Fernandes Benrahma Greenwood
    Antonio Toney Ings

    Steele; Livramento Gilmour Ayling

    1. HollywoodXI

I think Ings and Greenwood are where you need to focus. Ings out for DCL if fit and then assess Ronaldo’s impact on Greenwood and get rid for Torres / Raphinha if needed. White could go but Arsenals fixtures improve from here so I’d hold.

Yeah that’s right it doesn’t need much surgery. I was thinking either just Ings to DCL and yes am also considering Greenwood to Torres. Not worth a wildcard is it?

We’re basically identical apart from I went Barnes over Toney. Now have 2ft to move on him and Ings…or the wildcard to look at shiny new toys. I think the minor surgery is the right option!

elliott played ok yesterday ,but ultimately got in the way of salah and trent which rather lessens their appeal ,given that they had 45 mins of pressure down the right not many clear chances were created it could finish up a bit of a mess if all 3 are picked..

I'm not sure I agree. We outplayed you for the majority of the first half & in the second we were down to 10, defending really well.

You can only fit so many players in and around the box whilst we're camping like that so I'd don't feel you can read much into each of their positionings etc.

Trent still out in a load of crosses. Salah was perhaps a bit less active inside the box, but very involved in getting in into there.

Jota seriously limits Salahs performance. Take a look at how many assists Jota has got, and how many minutes have gone by without Salah getting a goal or assist when he's on the pitch at the same time as Jota.

    Two options in my mind.

    A. Ings + Cash > Digne + Jimenez for free ( Will captain Salah)

    B. Bruno + Ings + Tsimikas > Ronaldo + Jota + Coady for -4 (Will captain Ronaldo)

    Team is -

    Sanchez - Foster
    TAA - Cash - White - Livramento - Tsimikas
    Salah - Bruno - Grealish - Greenwood - Benrahma
    Ings - Antonio - Scarlett

2 FTs and 0.5m in the bank.

Don't delude yourselves. Yes Torres is a ridiculously good player (best young talent in the league imo) and yes he will score very well when on the pitch. Along with the quotes in the article pep also stressed that the real season starts after the break when City play every three days and every time he praises Torres and Jesus he follows it up with rotation talk and kdb and fodens importance. He says he has 6 options to play up front. Delap, Sterling, Torres, Jesus, Grealish, Mahrez. He's been saying in every interview full pepatation begins gw4.

So if you want an explosive ppm pick that will be rotated heavily then go for it. Could do well. Could even get lucky with Torres mainly rested in Europe and cups. Or could be the opposite and get 5 cameos in a row.

I think im happy to sit on Torres now even if he doesn't start every game, its my way into man city.

If Ronaldo didn't join united, then theres no chance id be thinking like this but im happy to go greenwood - torres after gameweek 4 now.

i w/c him out amongst 9 changes ,score so far outs 25 ins 28 with bruno(c) out vs (k)ane in to go ,quite content to have no roulette now, but im getting increasingly annoyed about this rotation as city and chelsea are a great watch and its frankly a ludicrous situation that you cant select most of their please because of the insecurity of starts ,i presume one day there will be an answer to this rotation spoiling the game ...

MUFC two No9s Martial & Cavani scored 14 goals league between them over approx 2700mins last season.

The majority of Uniteds goals come from midfield.

United are really poor at creating chances for the No9 and are not set up to play this way. I'm not sure that issue is going to be solved overnight just because they bought Ronaldo.

Lukaku was the missing piece for Chelsea and looks the better value on penalties in a system that supports him.

    Any thoughts?

Cavani is elite and the manager said the players were struggling to understand his movements in the box and get him the ball.

Ronaldo creates his own opportunities? Yeah 10 years ago but now he relies on teams being built around him,

Also 11 assists...and Ronaldo will have penalties. And he's a class above Martial and even Cavani. And will play more minutes than 2700. Sancho and Pogba also on the wings will create more than Rashford and Greenwood who like scoring more than assisting.

You are ignoring half the data. Cavani scored 17 goals with one of the best goals per 90 from any team across Europe.
      Martial is crap.
But yes you are right rashford and Bruno were their main threats until Cavani killed it last season.

P.S. I agree Lukaku is the best option

P.p.s Solskjaer is kinda clueless tactically. His main tactic is to put hundreds of millions of pounds worth of talent on the pitch

I prefer Lukaku currently myself as I think he will be the Chelsea “talisman” player in attack, where everything centers around him. You could possibly say the same for Kane and Ronaldo of course, but I think in those teams the likes of Son and Bruno/greenwood etc will share goals/assist.

Not sure Utd have had a nailed No. 9 for a while now so your comment seems a bit anti Utd to be honest …will Ronaldo even be an ‘out and out’ No. 9 anyway ? but I think he will be the missing piece of the Man U attacking jigsaw imho.

Lukaku will have his minutes managed, the same as every other Chelsea player, also imho.

      Non Man U fan btw

Cavani's underlying numbers + goals per 90 are insane and Martial hit 17 goals the season before so United are just fine at creating chances for their strikers and Ronaldo will be too.

Digne sellers is an odd one right? Looking at his fixture run and CS yesterday I would not have earmarked him as a issue for most squads. If anything Shaw who mostly people have would be the one to drop (watch him get a CS and assist today now that I have said that!).

Perhaps it is the rush to fund three premiums that the 5.5’s are luxuries dropped first. I reckon though that 5.5m range will be important as we go along, a consistent back line acting as glue to the squad is important IMO as we need to identify and put in place a good supporting cast to the big hitters!

His attacking threat so far is disappointing to be fair, but I thought he was unlucky not to get a CS GW 1 as Michael Keane threw that away, and then in GW2 his cross led to the penalty for DCL who would have likely scored if not fouled. So slim margins!
