Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Aston Villa players had to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Arsenal.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

Arsenal were Champions League material for much of 2021/22 when it came to goal threat but there is a sense that there is still more to come: they had the worst xG delta (-8.16) and second-worst goal conversion (10.4%) of any side who finished in the top half last season.

Perhaps the acquisition of Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) can help remedy that wastefulness. He’s had a flying start to life at Arsenal in pre-season, although it should be noted that he too has a bit of a profligate track record.

Wobbly defensive periods bookended last season, with no clean sheets arriving in the opening three Gameweeks or from Gameweeks 31-38.

In between, Arsenal racked up an impressive 13 shut-outs in 25 matches.

Keeping together a settled back four was one contributing factor: Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m), Ben White (£4.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m) started every fixture together from Gameweeks 4-18, with eight clean sheets arriving in this period alone. It was no coincidence that Arsenal’s defensive numbers worsened when Tomiyasu’s fitness issues began earlier this year.

But Aaron Ramsdale‘s (£5.0m) displays were also worthy of note. Earning rave reviews after his initial debut, he had fallen out of form somewhat by the time we reached the end of 2021/22.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 5

Arsenal are actually top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty in the first eight Gameweeks, meeting only one of last season’s top seven in that time – and even that is a Manchester United side who struggled for clean sheets in 2021/22. Even with the strides made in pre-season under Erik ten Hag, question marks remain about their defence.

Two newly-promoted outfits – Bournemouth and Fulham – come in Gameweek 3 and 4, while two of the leakier defences of last season, Leicester and Everton, visit the Emirates.

Arteta’s side will be in UEFA Europa League action this season, however, which means they will have to get used to a demanding Thursday-Sunday turnaround between matches. That competition starts after Gameweek 6.

The September international break may be a time to reassess investment in the Gunners, as all of last season’s top four have to be met in Gameweeks 9-15.

      It's an excellent point

We're going to have to suffer and accept FOMO if we're to have decent sides overall

You basically need to pick one to go without - Salah, City premium, Spurs premium - so choose your preferred FOMO.

Is a triple up on Arsenal :
Gabriel, Martinelli and Jesus, too much?
Can fit them in with quite a 'template' rest of the team

I hate how well priced arsenal are

Every draft I make ends up with triple arsenal. I currently have White, Martinelli and Jesus in mine.

Yeah good call saving the 0.5 on white, I just feel like it could be worth it cos Gabriel is more nailed and much more of a goal threat, I might leave him put long term

This consideration exactly. Not Sancho instead? (if I find the cash)
Re: Unites, if Martial is nailed, I think he's the one to get longterm anyway? Bruno will be awesome if he's back on pens, but I'm priced out, what with the template premiums

Sancho if you can find extra funds as i see him being more goal threat.

If CR7 leaves then martial is def a good choice too but if CR7 stays then rashford, martial would share minutes i feel?

I'm likely only going with one at most (see below, possibly 2) but it's hard to argue against a triple up. Added well to the squad and your triple-up only costs 19m and could return really nicely

  3. Nate(U)dog(ie)

Apologies as I know some of these are hard without full context but just curious of opinions on paper (and my posts are long enough as it is):

    A) Martinelli, Odegaard or Grealish (which one? Price doesn't matter) + Keep Chilwell
    B) Downgrade Chilwell to 5m (already have Trippier) and get Saka/Jesus
    C) Downgrade Chilwell to 4.5 def, get Martinelli and Grealish and play 3-5-2

Bear in mind that I currently have no Arsenal if you ignore these choices, I have TAA and Cancelo and 3 premiums. Initially felt if I could afford Saka/Jesus I actually preferred Saka, but Jesus does seem like he's determined to make a mockery of his price. I'd like to keep Chilwell but with the way Chelsea's window is going I'm not too sure. I'll give it until the last friendly to see how they manage if playing 5atb as the fixtures look good for a while but I'm wary of them

As long as he keeps starting, Martinelli is a solution to save on Saka, I get your point though. Jesus is the one though, just need to find the funds I guess

Last night didnt really change my mind about Chelsea - you know I was already wary, but I dont expect we'll see that kind of back 4 setup in PL once their CB signings have joined up, and they looked better in the 2nd half with 343. Their declared intention to add 2 further CBs makes 343 much more likely imo. But Chilwell's non-appearance is definitely a concern. If you do downgrade him, I quite like the look of C

I dont think I will. Mount is on the fringes of my team but at the moment I think I'm going to play 352 like this:
          Sanchez
          TAA Cancelo Trippier
          Son Diaz Maddison Martinelli Aaronson
          Haaland Jesus
          (White, 4.5, 4.5)

Very much considering it, felt he'd have a good season and he works best playing off of a forward. Him and Haaland striking it up on and off the pitch (from what I've read) can only be good for him

I will disagree. He's capable of a lot more than we've seen at City, he showed some of it at the end of last season and he's had to adapt like all players do in their first seasons under Pep.

Use your eyes not your heart. Watch Mahrez on the ball constantly looking for assists and goals, then watch Grealish on the ball constantly lookin for freekicks and pens, there's a difference.

Is 5-4-1 a bad formation for FPL?

Would be Jesus as the lone forward.

So is no Kane/Haaland FPL suicide?

      I does look good.

My issue is you are playing Neto and Bailey - will these two players...

      a) start on a regular basis
      b) provide you with a decent return if/when they do start

In my eyes you are playing 3-3-2 cos Neto and Bailey may not start and are only liekly to return 1/2/3 pointers

      1. Lingard’s Shin Guards

i'm backing neto to start and do well for his price, seems as though wolves fans think he will too

Gerrard said something along the lines of "If the league started tomorrow, Bailey would be in the lineup" in his presser after the game yesterday and said that his finish against united reminded him of Suarez

    Ederson
    TAA - Robertson - Cancelo - Trippier - Neco
    Salah - Son/KDB - Maddison - Neto
    Jesus

seems a solid structure. Neco could follow AWB/Lundstram/Dallas/Livramento as WB in Cooper's newly promoted side

    Neto can be switched

I like it, I really like it.

As I've said above, Neto concerns me but if you are willing to change then all's good haha.

Maddison could be a good pick, not keen personally. I would fancy Saka/Odegaard/Martinelli over him then upgrade Neto to...

Its good but Kane/Haaland over Son/KDB gives you a better structure and extra 0.5m?

My ideal team at the moment is below but I think its 0.5 over budget.

      Ederson
      TAA Robbo Cancelo James Trippier
      KDB Diaz/Maddison Neto
      Kane Jesus

Have 10 mil to fill last 2 spots in my team. Both players would need to start most the time (Neco, Pereira and Fodder on bench). I was going to get Tomi and Neto but seems Tomi will miss GW1.

Besides Dalot who are the preferred 4.5 defenders? Despite the fixtures perhaps a Leicester full back? Else I could go Bailey instead of Neto and then get a 5.0 defender?

    Any advice?

It does feel like they’re kind of being forced to go populist with the Neto, Greenwood, Jesus picks. Worth bearing in mind that this is one of a few preset teams they’re putting out, so probably not the Scout’s actual team.

I’d keep Trippier personally. Think he’ll do better than Neto.

Could downgrade Ederson to improve the bench a bit and then you can bench one of your defenders for bad fixtures if needed.

Generally like it, but I’m not convinced with James because Chelsea don’t seem quite right and potentially changing to a back 4. I’m a Chelsea fan and love James as a player, but I think the whole Chelsea team is wait and see for me initially.

If you downgrade him you can upgrade Sancho to Diaz. One 8m mid I think is a good idea because one of them at least has to go well and then it’s an easy trade if you pick the wrong one.

Like the Trip and Cash picks. I have them as well.

    3 years, 4 months ago

    Ramsdale
    TAA, Cancelo, Trippier, Cash, Doherty
    Salah, Diaz, Martinelli
    Kane, Jesus

    4.0, Neto, Andreas, 4.5
    0.5 ITB

Can’t quite decide if it’s worth changing to 442 and trying to upgrade Neto to one of the other 8m mids. Bench and defence struggles if I do it though.

    Other question marks are:
Doherty, really really want a Spurs wingback, but no idea who’s going to start. Got the 0.5 ITB to potentially move to Perisic.
Ramsdale, Arsenal weren’t great at the back towards the end of the season, but had a great run before that and have great fixtures to start.

    Thoughts? Thanks

    2. Jackie Moon
      • 7 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

I’ve toyed with 1 up front, but don’t want to come unstuck with 2 non-playing bench players and nothing in the 5-5.5 price seems worth it. So I’ve got Kane over Son instead even though I’d probably prefer Son.

Interesting to see the lack of triple-ups (except Liverpool) in teams this season. With effectively 3 WCs it surely makes it more lucrative, particularly in the first part of the season before the World Cup, to go hard with the players in teams you expect to keep a lot of CS and score a lot of goals.

If you think Chelsea, for example, are going to win a lot of games to nil in the first 6/7 GWs then surely you go James and Chilwell and Mount (or Mendy as an alternative) and then you can WC them out once those fixture pass.
