We continue to assess the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Gameweek 26 in our Scout Notes series.

Here, we focus on Nottingham Forest’s entertaining 2-2 draw with Everton.

The numbers and graphics you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data from every single Premier League fixture.

IN-FORM JOHNSON

Brennan Johnson’s (£5.9m) brace made it a ninth successive home match without defeat for Nott’m Forest, as they twice came from behind to earn a draw at The City Ground.

The 21-year-old was excellent, finding the net with two of his four efforts on goal and going close to a hat-trick late on.

Johnson is now up to seven attacking returns from Gameweek 17 onwards – among all FPL forwards, only Erling Haaland (£12.2m), Harry Kane (£11.7m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.3m) have more.

Above: Forwards sorted by attacking returns since the World Cup

Nott’m Forest’s fixtures aren’t great, but they do have a match in Blank Gameweek 28 and follow it up with a very appealing Double Gameweek 29 against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds United, so interest in Johnson could pick up.

FOREST HARD TO BEAT AT HOME

Nott’m Forest haven’t lost at home in the league since Gameweek 8, a run that has seen them take 17 points from 27.

They have also scored in 12 consecutive home league matches since a 2-0 loss against Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 4, with Newcastle United’s defenders next to visit The City Ground in Blank Gameweek 28.

GameweekOpponentScore
26Everton2-2
24Man City1-1
22Leeds1-0
20Leicester2-0
18Chelsea1-1
16Crystal Palace1-0
15Brentford2-2
13Liverpool1-0
10Aston Villa1-1

Steve Cooper made just one change from the heavy 4-0 defeat at West Ham United and it came at right-back, with Serge Aurier (£4.4m) returning a week earlier than expected in place of Neco Williams (£3.9m).

Fellow full-back Renan Lodi (£4.3m) also recovered to start, and despite conceding two goals and receiving a yellow card, picked up a bonus point.

GRAY AND DOUCOURE ON TARGET

Everton picked up their first point on the road under Sean Dyche and scored multiple goals in a match for the first time since Gameweek 13.

In the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m), Demarai Gray (£5.3m) led the line, with Neal Maupay (£5.9m) and Ellis Simms (£4.5m) named among the substitutes.

And it was Gray who put Everton ahead, with a terrific spot kick after Dwight McNeil (£5.1m) was fouled.

Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.3m) was also on the scoresheet from a set-piece. Three of Everton’s four goals under Dyche have now come from dead-ball situations.

After the match, an upbeat Sean Dyche said:

“I’m pleased, we’re doing the right things and there’s been real commitment to the cause since I joined. We got in so many good positions today. We know that they have a good record here too. It’s just the details now, we’ve got to stamp out the mistakes but we defended well and countered today. There was a lot of plusses about the performance. We know that we have to win games but you have to re-start and this showed a step forward. This was a really good away performance. It’s a great building block to carry on the journey with.” – Sean Dyche

Still, Everton remain winless in their last nine Premier League away matches, with just two wins in their last 30 fixtures on the road.

Up next for the Toffees is a Premier League home game against Brentford in Double Gameweek 27, before travelling to Chelsea in Blank Gameweek 28.

Vitalii Mykolenko (£4.3m), meanwhile, missed out because of illness, with Ben Godfrey (£4.3m) deputising at left-back.

Which option guys? 2FTs. Own only Mitoma with dgw currently.

    A) Nketiah, Trippier > Toney, Estupinan
    B) Kepa, Shaw > Raya, Estupinan

Have March already, which do you think is best one to get to join him?
    A) Mitoma
    B) MacAllister

Anyone who watched the game this week - who looked better? Is it worth a hit to get both in and ditch March?

Tough call. Trippier averages 7.3 ppm versus FDR 2 opponents at home, across 9 such matches, with only 1 blank over that span
Shaw averages 7.0 ppm across 5 such matches. Also only 1 blank.
Current for me, Trippier is definitely in, with Shaw, Martinelli, and Odegaard (both @Fulham) competing for last two starting spots. I like Martinelli with Trossard possibly out, so Odegaard is currently first on bench (he said, gulping)

I don't regret wildcarding and following the lead of content creators..

Some of these guys do a ridiculous amount of research and deep thinking and the argument for Wildcard were solid.

Wildcarders have been undone by a freak result

The morale is that fpl requires a fair amount of luck - and that the deep and strategic thought many put in probably isn't worth it

Can't think of many other games where it is possible to dedicate so many hours and still lose out to those who play off the cuff

Depends on your team. I can get 13 dgw players (+ Martinelli and Haaland) for 29 without a wildcard. Only required a few hits. You should base your chip strategy on your team. Just my two cents.

I got two Brentford in for this week (-4) and will get 3 Brighton for the upcoming gameweek (-8). Effectively a -12 but I don’t mind as I can now BB in 29.

The same way the vast majority lose money on football betting, no matter how many hours dedicated.

Not one rationally minded human being could have predicted Man Utd suffering the biggest loss in their history against Liverpool today.

Trying to predict anything over 1 week is futile - anything can happen, though today's 7-0 was a fairly extreme example! All you can do is pick players for a run of games based on fixtures,.form, stats, eyetest or whatever and

I play the game with half an eye on what the majority of the content creators suggest, with my plans trying to work out how I can gain on people following them too closely. I know because I used to do it - it's easy to over-read plans.

I'm playing my own game at the moment and have risen from rank 2m to just outside 400,000 since the post-WC restart. Very disappointing season, but it appears I'm in the minority in keeping my wildcard now in my mini-leagues, so could now make huge gains over the coming weeks.

In my team, keeping triple Liverpool wasn't a mistake or laziness, but forward planning against FPL influencers who mainly seemed to think Liverpool needed to be ditched.

But it's all luck at the end of the day.

    6. TallestJohn
      • 8 Years

The wildcard will probably still prove to be the right move to set up for the coming gameweeks, especially if like me you had no Brighton or Brentford before this. If Nketiah hadn't been injured I probably would've been content to hold Salah and van Dijk one more week, also would've played Tarkowski and MGW.

Don't know what my free transfer would've been, perhaps Almiron→Mitoma? We'll see how Brentford do but Brighton and Arsenal scored a combined 7 and wildcarding meant I had four of their attackers this week instead of just one.

Template is both easier to achieve due to pricing and feels more dictated by fixtures than any season I can remember. Unless you played the FH25 strategy why would you have triple Brighton and Brentford when they blanked while other teams had doubles?

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I avoided FH in GW25 because I had 11 starters. But it was my only downward arrow in the last 7 GWs.

I brought in three this week for a -8 to maintain my WC. That was my strategy because looking ahead I can field 14 DGW starters in GW29, with a free hit in the middle. I didn't think my team needed to be ripped apart, just a couple of tweaks (Tarkowski, Nketiah and Mahrez to Estupinan, Mitoma and Toney). To be honest, it's probably the first time in a decade that a -8 has paid off so handsomely. I only just brought in Brighton and Brentford assets this week.

I can see my rivals had a lot of Wolves and Everton assets, plus Rico Lewis. Their teams needed a WC.

Good evening all!! Currently have only Toney from Brentford, do we think the keep any clean sheets at all during 27?? Two away match, not the strongest of opponents but both scrapping for survival, just wondering where or not to get a Brentford defender in or not…..

    Any thoughts suggestions???

I would be selling Ake so I can get to any of their defenders

    Cheers everyone!!

Similar dilemma, only I have a Brentford defender and am thinking of a Brighton defender for Ake. I actually think Ake will be a solid pick from GW30 onwards, and every chance he gets a clean sheet next week. But Brentford will have 5 games while he has 2 between 27-29, the second of which is Liverpool. On balance, might be worth it...

Fortunately didn’t wildcard mainly though not paying much attention this season, had a great week and suddenly in contention for top 3 mini league, but no idea what I’m doing now with my team and how to navigate then next 3. Team as below:

    Ward / Iverson
    White / Bueno / Estu / Tripp / shaw
    Gakpo / salah / Andreas / rashford / saka
    Haaland / mitro / Toney

    I’m thinking:

GW 27: Andreas, iverson > Steele, mitoma -4
    GW 28: free hit
GW 29: mitro, bueno > Johnson, Mee and bench boost

Still got wildcard so I could use this 27 instead, but now sure what to do with Liverpool assets, and if I should be free hitting 28 or not! Help please!

You're in a similar position to me with WC, free hit and probably bench boost still intact.

If you have Bench Boost, then aiming to get 15 regular starting players for GW29 and then hit the BB button.

Steele looks good but I don't think he's nailed on. He's come in for Sanchez due to a howler but there's a lot of uncertainty. A better keeper is probably Raya - someone I don't have but wish I had.

Andreas to Mitoma is a smart move. I don't think there's a justification to touch any of the other midfielders.

Bueno out is good. Loads of cheap options. Mitro out too, an obvious move.

The other thing I'd look at is transfer order. If you plan to bring in a DGW keeper then making the move this week only makes sense if you'll play him, i.e. has a DGW.

You're in a strong position though!

I’ve had a re-think, you make some good points, I thinking I going to WC this week, play 9 next week and bench boost 29, but doing the following:

        Current team:

        Ward / Iverson
        White / Bueno / Estu / Tripp / shaw
        Gakpo / salah / Andreas / rashford / saka
        Haaland / mitro / Toney

        WC team:

        Ward / raya
        White / mee / Estu / Tripp / shaw
Mac allister / salah / mitoma / rashford / saka
        Haaland / Johnson / Toney

Then I’ll swap haaland > Kane (C) for the blank,

Use my FT for one more DGW player And bench boost 29 for 13 DGW players

        Bring haaland back following week

Spurs have Forest at home next. Could be a walloping. Kane or Son or both could be very decent differentials. Plus they then entertain Southampton. Admittedly SOU did win last time out but if their striker wasn’t so useless they could and should have conceded 3 or 4.

Your three benched players can be improved to much better players. BHA and BRE are probably your best targets for all three now, with a BB in GW28. Estupinan is an obvious move, and I'm sure lots of people will bring him in now so his price will rise. Andreas to your pick of BHA attacker - March or Mac Allister. Akanji to either BHA or BRE defender depending on your preference.

You'd be looking at dead-ending your team in the near future before a WC, so you could risk ditching White or Martinelli for Robertson or Salah in GW29.

Use second WC the week before BB?

To be honest I don't think there is a learning if you feel your team needed a WC. I didn't think that mine needed one and having Salah from the last DGW meant he may have saved my GW. If I'd gone full in on Liverpool last GW, I might have used my WC this.

You can't predict the future or change the past.

Top 4000 in the world and with 2 ft

    Ederson, Ward
    Tarkowski, Mee, Trippier, Zinchenko, Bueno
    Salah, Mitoma, March, Saka, Rashford
    Kane, Haland, Nketiah

Safe to say that Ederson, Nketiah to Raya, Toney looks sensible?

Who will you bench? You'll have a proper headache on your hands

Which ever one I don't sell for Mitoma will be benched.

All 5 of those defenders have decent games though.

Anyway, back to the actual question. Probably A for me.

Maddison has a double in 29 so tempting to keep but then Leicester looked terrible yesterday.
The mids either double or have higher haul potential than the defenders so I'll be benched them over the forwards.

Is this looking ok? Feels weird having Odegaard on the bench.

    Kepa
    Trippier Trent Estupinan
    Salah Rashford Saka Mitoma
    Haaland Toney Mbeumo

    Pickford Odegaard Tarkowski Emerson

G2G. Gotta be Odegaard on the bench from that lot.

Looks the right decision. If Toney gets a yellow tomorrow then it might be worth a rethink.

Next week Ødegaard on my bench - this week it was BrunoF. Except for BGW there will always be someone I don't want to bench from the attack but you have to go with the fixtures.

I've not worked out how much I lost out by WC'ing instead of holding this week, stillglad I did as set up well for future weeks.

At least bringing in Mac Allister 14pts, slightly offsets ditching Darwin and Gakpo that got 26 combined.

Wildcarding out your favourite ever FPL asset only for him to haul hurts 🙁

I know the timing seems bad but any thoughts on this WC team?

    Kepa Raya
    Trippier Botman Chilwell Estupinan Henry
    Saka Rashford Maddison March Mitoma
    Kane Toney Felix

Plan is punt on Felix's 4 games instead of Haaland's 2 and bring back Haaland in GW30. It gives me 10 starters in BGW28 with 1 FT that I could potentially save and use 2 for free in BB DGW29 that will give me 14 doublers and Kane.

On a more serious just the Felix pick I'm not quite sure off as Chelsea don't seem to scoring a lot

Watkins, Iheanacho, Solanke, Wilson as alternatives?

My only suggestion would be to look at Watkins as an alternative to Felix. Felix has been annoying to own the last few GWs. I'm looking at shipping him for Toney and keeping Watkins.

Yes the striker is still up for debate. Between Felix, Watkins and possibly Wilson (if he looks any nailed) due to his future DGW.

Wilson looks off the pace at the minute. Most Newcastle fans calling for Isak to start, including me. I think Howe my rotate for DGWs.

I got Maddison in on WC this week and regret it already. They looked awful and he looked frustrated. Now don't know whether to keep him or ditch him for Mitoma.

I'm already maxed out on Brighton so can't do that, but Maddison would probably come in for DGW29 anyway. I could go with Martinelli for 27 and 28 and book another transfer but it will likely mean -4.

I wouldn't. Brentford have 2 away games. Brighton have a good double but no game next week.

If you have FH left, fill your boots with Brighton and Brentford players. Probably bring in 2 BHA attackers and a BRE attacker. -4 should return well and they're all so cheap you can probably afford them.
