Thoughts on this lot.....admittedly very little flexibility and very top heavy, but playing a 3-4-3 where all im doing most weeks is choosing which budget defender to play suits my limited time approach 🙂

    Pickford / Areola

    Gabriel / Estupinan / Botman / Tarkowski / Gusto (or other 4.0)

    Salah / Saka / Bruno / Eze / Nakamba

    Haaland / Jesus / Wissa

There's merritt on spreading the salah funds for sure. I just don't want the rashfor/bruno double up, get nervous about city midfielders due to rotation and don't yet know how Son will go. One thing I do know is Salah will probably score 260+ points....and bizarrely feels like a bit of a differential - GW2 armband option too.

really nice team, its probably as good a Salah/Halland team that you can reasonably get, especially with Jesus squeezed in there, also i'm tempted by Gusto myself since he'll probably play way more than James due to the latter's injuries

Really annoying that FFS made the pre-season minutes tracker a paid feature this season. You would hope they would add value to the paid section of the site instead of continuing to gatekeep anything worth visiting this site for. By making the free-to-use part of the site so useless, they risk ruining the influx of new members.

Yeah, all of this ought to be discussed, or insight re injury or change of tactics. Given last season, he should be one of the top picks unless there's some reason.

There is uncertainty about who will be Howe's choice as central striker in his preferred 4-3-3. Indeed there is uncertainty about the preferred picks for the whole front 3.

When Isak and Wilson were both fit and arguably playing their best football between GW28-GW34, it was Isak who was first choice. Wilson's role was off the bench or to start in midweek matches. Isak seemed to offer more in all-round play and Wilson was still able to get goals despite more limited game time.

In preseason, Howe hasn't given Isak and Wilson time together on the pitch. Isak did move out to wide left for a period in one preseason game, but it was to swap with Gordon who came into the middle.

If one of Isak or Wilson gets injured, then I think the other is a great FPL pick. As it stands, it's not clear who will be Howe's first pick. In the 2nd half of the season, Howe liked to manage the minutes of his front 3 in order to keep the high press fresh.

Many Newcastle fans and local journos put Isak ahead in the pecking order, but Wilson has shown that even with reduced minutes he can still get goals. The preseason matches this weekend against Fiorentina and Villarreal might give a clue to Howe's front line for GW1.

Yeah in hindsight I should have touched on this more - I was keeping the longer explanations back for the team news entry next week, once the final two friendlies had been played, but I'll add a bit more now. Not that I can do any better than HP's reply!

Cheers for the detailed post. For me the fixtures meant I wasn't really going to consider either (although I know Newcastle are very capable of scoring in pretty much any game), I think it may be a case of waiting a period to see if there's a rotation between them between PL and CL or if either is unavailable for a time

Yeah if Wilson got PL and Isak got CL, or vice versa, one could be a good FPL option.

Thanks. No worries. I think ultimately the fixtures mean there is less pressure to try and second guess Howe's selections for FPL purposes. It's a comfortable wait and see, rather than another tricky Isak vs Wilson choice!

Arsenal signing Raya makes Ramsdale a lot less appealing to me....

I'm not a fan of starting new EPL arrivals in my GW1 team, but Onana might be inevitable.

It would make Ramsdale's position insecure. Similarly, Chelsea are looking at Brighton's Sanchez to push Kepa. That Onana has no keeper rival is relevant.

Salibas points per game was impressive but that was because he outperformed his xG and xA while Gabriel underperformed xG, started every game and had higher BPS so should out average Saliba and with Saliba's history with fitness will almost certainly outscore him

True, Saliba did have a half-point per game advantage over Gabriel last season. But most of that was down to the different list of teams they faced and where the clean sheets fell across the games each played. Gabriel had 12 CS in 27 starts, Gabriel 14 in 38. Gabriel absolutely trumped his teammate in xG metrics, BPS, attempts, shots, and set pieces 🙂

    Botman or Schar?

I was watching FPL wire where they covered defenders and those guys mentioned Botman had similar attacking threat numbers as Schar. If you had to pick one between these two who'd you pick? 0.5m saving can go a long way.

Neither till GW5. The difference in points between the two last season was Schär's performance in GW1. Otherwise there wasn't much in it the rest of the season, though as a Botman owner it was a little nerve-wracking watching Schär standing over some free kicks.

Agree I wouldn't be desperate for either to start the season but if you can bench Botman during that run it does save a transfer shuffling a 4.5 defender around.

I don't want to have to transfer in a 4.5-5m DEF though and I do want NEW defense. Just pick one and bench until there are good fixtures. I think Home vs Villa is not that bad anyway. So I'm going Botman and will hold long term.

I'm not a early wildcarder generally so prefer to limit planned transfers.

Early in the season my transfers will spent on getting the right mids.

I'm keeping 0.5m itb with the idea that come GW4 or 5, I'll want to upgrade a 4.0 to a 4.5, or maybe downgrade Estupinan. The new defender could be from Newcastle, but he could be from Villa or maybe Colwill. I'd rather keep my option open.

Schar is the better bet for assists and goals in my opinion. He has an eye for a long pass or shot from distance. Botman and Schar 'should' be a threat from set pieces, but they probably underperformed given the quality of balls put in by Trippier.

I think Botman is the better FPL pick given the prices. I'm not 100% convinced Schar's body will hold up with 2 games a week. There is no rush to get Newcastle players and the first few weeks should help with deciding. Trippier might emerge as an option.

How does this look? Banking on Eze TAA and Chilwell to outscore, or at least get close to the likes of Bruno Son et al, 4.5 defender could be anyone, all money on the pitch though, a little nervous about no 0.5 itb

    Johnstone

    Chilwell Tarkowski Alexander-Arnold

    Eze Rashford Mitoma Saka Ødegaard

    G.Jesus Haaland

    J.Virginia Beyer Mubama Kongolo

Also, if Raya goes to Arsenal, and I had three Arsenal players already, would be count as a stealth 4th Arsenal? I tried it with Rice before he went and it flagged it up as too many Arsenal

I think it works, there will be a lot of lateral movements in that price bracket once the season starts, to have the optimal 3-5 mids. There are so many in the 7.5-9m range that are equally viable on paper, Arse trio is as good as any.

I've seen talk about Foden, Alvarez and Grealish, but haven't seen any discussion about Bernardo Silva. Any thoughts on him for FPL?

Sam Lee in The Athletic (https://theathletic.com/4734791/2023/08/01/michael-olise-manchester-city-bernardo-silva?source=user-shared-article) says that "the plan had been to use Bernardo as an attacking midfielder instead" after Gundogan left and Rice decided to go to Arsenal, but Mahrez' exit means he may play RW, although they are targeting Olise (although he's injured currently and they won't want to enter a bidding war with Chelsea) and Doku. But either way it looks like he'll be going back to playing in a far more attacking role than last season, where he spent a lot of time in deeper central midfield positions or doing defensive work there.

Only Rodri (34), Haaland (33), KDB (28) and Gundogan (27) started more games than Bernardo (24) last season, and he completed 90 mins on 16 of those occasions, and was subbed on 10 other occasions too so I'd like to think he'll certainly be about as reliable for minutes as a Pep player can be with less bodies around. He does tend to be streaky so I wouldn't be surprised if early on may end up being a good time to go with him with KDB lacking in fitness and no obvious choice for RW (or if someone is signed, them needing time to settle in)

I was considering changing from a strong 11 to a strong 12 by switching my MAC (non 14's) from Stones & Foden to Bernardo & Alvarez....but Pep roulette would probably still get me. If I was braver, I'd consider Haaland only from MAC

Was considering Bernardo Silva over Foden, definitely looks like he could have that LW spot early doors and be more of a threat than last season. Still prefer Foden if he's playing that gundogan role and arriving late into the box in those central positions. Community shield will let us know more.

If the move to Arsenal is finalized, I think I will use Raya as my defensive cover for Arsenal, pick 1 or 2 mids or a mid and Jesus for the other 2 Arsenal spots. Offhand does anyone know which team rotates well with Arsenal for second gk?

Waste of money getting a premium GK (>4.5m) and anything more than 4.0m for the sub.

Agree with this, if you're spending 5m+ on a GK then just stick with them as you're paying the extra for the higher clean sheet and save/bonus pt potential, if you're rotating then might as well have two 4.5 instead

Well he's not gonna be a guaranteed starter. Ramsdale has been solid and has had a full pre season. Raya will start off playing the cups and UCL group games.

After deciding to move Shaw out to bring in Onana to enable getting Nkunku, I'm in a bit of a pickle if Raya does go as he's easily the standout keeper choice, but I don't fancy any ManUtd 5m defs over Saliba in that case

    Currently on

    Onana (Areo)
    Stones Gabriel Estu (2 x 4's)
    Foden Saka BrunoF Rash (Anderson)
    Jesus Darwin Haaland

Plan is to use 2 transfers after GW2 (Estu & Jesus to Chilwell & Nkunku)

I know planning transfers is risky....thoughts?

The question is how much do you think Jesus and Estupiñan outscore Chilwell and Nkunku by? If you look at each FT as costing 4pts (since that's what any further needed moves will cost you) then you might simply be better off starting with them, especially in the case that either of them start well and rise in price

good point, after consulting Fantasy Hub's rate my team tool, likely about 3-5 points fewer for Chilwell & Nkunku, so probably best bot to plan 2 transfers. Was sorta hoping the opposite, that Estu & Jesus might rise twice over 2 GWs. Food for thought...cheers

I'd keep Estu until Brighton's fixtures improve, so Jesus to Nkunku would be the move I'd make. Who do you have on the bench as cover?

    Steele
    Estupinan Gabriel Henry
    Salah Saka Martinelli Rashford Mitoma

    Areola Kabore Bell Plange

Steele can become the keeper that looks likely to start for Brighton. Thoughts on this?

Prefer Pickford tbh, Sean Dyche has had enough time to turn them into a CS machine.

I dont expect Brentford to keep many CS without Raya, the new keeper looks like a huge downgrade. If not pickford then I'd surely go for Tarkowski.

      Rest looks good!

I'm not sure where that idea has come from with Dyche, Everton's defensive stats under him were actually worse than under Lampard (albeit marginally). They've also lost Coady and Mina now which can't help

This is his first full season. Coady and Mina were average anyway. Its Sean Dyche the OG Burney CS Machine

Everton conceded the 2nd highest xG last season, they've lost two CBs now (one that was a leader for them last year) and their only incoming defensively is a 38 year old RB. I just don't see where this transformation is going to come from. At the other end of the pitch they're not looking good either with McNeil rumoured to be missing over a month, Demarai Gray moving closer to a move to Fulham and hopes pinned on a player that can't stay fit so I don't really see the pressure on their defence easing much

I think Young might play on the left in defence, but not convinced Dyche's man up and no nonsense approach transforms them radically.

He can make marginal improvements and I'm sure they'll be a few 1-0 home wins but after 15 games or so I'd be surprised if Everton are far from 12-15th spot. Even that would represent progress.

Consensus seems to be Mubama at WHU or one of the promoted forwards. I’d certainly think twice about using up an ars slot with a fodder player. Ultimately the role of the 4.5 fwd is to enable funds in the rest of the squad. Not pts contribution.

Don't think it matters which you go for. None will score any decent points.

I'd just make sure they're not from a team you might want 3 players from or too highly owned where they could have price drops.

If Balogun doesn't breakthrough into the first team he could push for a move but it's hard to see that happening in August.

Depends where you want to spent your money. I've gone with Wissa and Pedro and spent money on a big midfield (Salah, Rash, Saka and Marti)

Been pretty set on 7-8 of this starting team for a while now. Still tossing up whether to keep Salah or spread the funds, but I if I bring in say Bruno I end up with heaps of money in the bank as I'd only change say Pedro to Mitoma and Tark to Stones. I like Wissa as a differential! Thoughts and advice please?

    Onana, Areola
    Gabriel, Estu, Tark (Pau, Baldock)
    Salah, Rash, Saka, Marti (Anderson)
    Haaland, Wissa, Pedro

    Thanks!
