Who takes penalties for West Ham these days?

Paqueta took one in GW2 when Bowen was on the pitch. However, JWP wasn't playing at the time.

JWP did miss two penalties last season, but did score three. He's also scored 18 across his career - so comfortable with the duty.

Bowen has scored 6 and missed 3. (2 scored last season, 1 missed.)

Paqueta has scored 4 and missed 0.

I'd say assume Pacqueta is on them for now. Seems like he's ahead of Bowen. But JWP could potentially be - has taken many more over his career.

We don't know. Paqueta took one against Chelsea but Benrahma and JWP weren't on the pitch.

Benrahma when he’s on the pitch, which isn’t that often.
The assumption is JWP to take over although I wasn’t particularly convinced with him on them. That said, confidence and a better team could change that.

Pochettino has basically said in about 3 different quotes that he wants a normal back 4 and doesn't think Chilwell is as good as a winger as other players.

So that either means Chilwell is benched or he is played as a right back who is being told to stay back and defend as the #1 and #2 priority.

Everything has already seen the light but for anyone else who is thinking of keeping him. He is not going to be the Chilwell of last season.

Chilwell is not going to play RB. Disasi could move to RB and Colwill to CB allowing Chilwell to play LB.

Chilwell will not play RB. Not sure where you've got that from, unless you've just made a left back typo.

Poch saying Chilwell is not as good a winger as others is not being harsh, it's just true. He's not a winger. Poch shoehorned him there.

Whilst Poch is still toying with Colwill at LB (which FFS he should stop), Chilwell is a risk unfortunately.

Trust me, we Chelsea fans don't want it. When Reece is back Chilwell might end up playing more - because Reece is a better defender than Gusto. He will protect when he needs to protect - which enables the usual Chilwell.

Gusto is not entirely trusted with the offense/defense balance it seems - but he's been playing because he's out only natural RB.

    How’s this for a wildcard?

Potentially a West Ham defender for udogie for one week and then use my ft next week to get him back as great fixtures after the Liverpool game?

Or just play kabore (dgw) over udogie this week..

    Areola
    Trippier | Kabore | Cash
    Salah | Gordon | Son | JWP | Saka
    Haaland | Alvarez

    Neto | Udogie | Archer | Lamptey

Do you have the budget to do:

      Chilwell ➡️ Trippier
      Jackson ➡️ Morris?

If not, then I'd still do that but replace Trippier with a different Newcastle defender...

Burn Son leaves money to upgrade defence or GK, that's swaying me to go B. Think the recent Trippier haul is possible swaying people even though its probably a once in a season score.

I joked to some friends in the work league about wildcarding Haaland out, and bringing him back for the Villa/Luton fixture turnaround. But now I’m slowly coming round to it.
You can just about build a team that has:
Triple Liverpool, double spurs attack, Saka, United mid, villa/West Ham player for fixtures, with a reasonable defence, and all with good fixtures.
The draft I put together as an example also contains potentially 4 penalty taking midfielders as well (Salah, Son, Saka pending injury, Fernandes).

But it’s the captaincy that really flips it for me - I don’t see myself captaining Haaland in any bar one of the upcoming fixtures:

Gameweek 7 - Carlton Morris Everton away, Burnley home vs Haaland Wolves away
Gameweek 8 - Spurs away at Luton vs Haaland Arsenal away
Gameweek 9 - Liverpool home to Everton, Man United Away to Sheffield, Spurs home to Fulham vs Haaland home to Brighton
Gameweek 10 - Arsenal home to Sheffield, Liverpool home to forest be Haaland away to Man U
Gameweek 11 - the danger week. Liverpool away to Luton vs Haaland home to Bournemouth
Gameweek 12 - Arsenal home to Burnley, United home to Luton vs Haaland away to Chelsea
Gameweek 13 - tough captaincy week all round, Haaland home vs Liverpool, no clear standout
Gameweek 14 - Arsenal home to Wolves, Liverpool home to Fulham vs Haaland home to spurs
Gameweek 15 - Arsenal away to Luton, Liverpool away to Sheffield be Haaland home away to villa.

Going off the above, I expect roughly a goal a game from him. Can he get more? Sure. Will most of them come against Bournemouth or Chelsea? Probably. But if the argument for not having Salah was “for the price, we won’t captain him”, then why not apply that to the big man?
I think this could be the best opportunity to maximise the risk/reward for the captaincy over this period.

No one has confirmation, but he’s the only one of that spurs team outside of Maddison to have taken them on a consistent basis (national team) as far as I can tell.
Maddison’s record isn’t great either, and he’s captain, so I’d expect him to pending Porro suddenly getting them out of nowhere.

Why not Morris? Returned every other game and should have had a penalty against West Ham. Up against an Everton side that hasn’t been great (although statistically ok) and at home to Burnley where both sides need points already.

Gw8 is the only week I’d feel good about not captaining him, personally. There aren’t many good defences atm. He can comfortably get double digits against United, Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea etc

Haaland got the one before injury against spurs last year, so bit harsh for me to claim he wouldn’t have got more, but he didn’t get anything when they lost 1-0. He missed one and didn’t get anything against Liverpool in the other game. Didn’t score against Chelsea last year, and has that one massive early season haul against United.
I think we are blinded by the latter game.

Yeah fair points, but I think I can see that big United style haul happening again a couple of times this season. United, Liverpool, Chelsea could all fall apart (defensively) against City imo.

Having said that, it’s a bold move and if you’re up for a big risk I do love this kind of thinking so I admire it!

Wolves, Brighton, ManUtd, Bournemouth, Spurs and Villa are all leaky, they're all in the bottom half of the xGC table. I looked at the table yesterday and figured I could actually see myself captaining Haaland more in this next run than I have done in the opening 6 weeks

Wolves, yes, but that’s next week and the other option is Luton, so that’s fair game.
Same for Bournemouth as that’s an easy option to go for, so again, im expecting big captaincy score those weeks.
But those defences, leaky as they have been, are still not as bad as the 3 promoted sides, which is my logic. Or madness.

GW8 I will almost certainly captain Son. The tricky decisions come in GWs 9-10 I think. On paper / FDR Pool's fixtures are much better, but the Merseyside derbies were tight last year & Forest much improved this season, whereas BHA & MUN don't seem especially formidable at the moment. I haven't entirely decided how I'll approach these yet but currently thinking that Salah isn't really required for captaincy rotation as much as Son is

True, if I had Salah, Haaland & Son it would be very difficult to fit Saka & Rashford too. I'm not quite as sure about capping them at the moment but things could change you do have a nicer spread of options in a one premium setup.

Yeh, don’t get me wrong, I had a stinker early doors when I didn’t captain Haaland week 1 (silly from me) but I just think that the teams that are on offer are much better to target then just focus on Haaland.

A lovely way for me to humble brag as well, but last season was my best season ever, and I moved away from Haaland more then the average bear.
I captained Kane against Everton twice over Haaland both times, and managed to get away with the Man United haul by captaining Maddison for his 2 goals and assist against forest, so it defo can work.
Unfortunately for me this year, Rashford twice hasn’t helped, but I did go Salah in week 5 when Haaland decided that West Ham didn’t need putting to the sword.

I certainly intend to switch captaincies around over the forthcoming gameweeks but don't intend to sell haaland just because I expect him to consistently bring in points every week even when I don't captain him. Same reason I have had salah since the start. I think we can afford decent teams with both.

Own but don't captain is my personal preference, variance will be huge without him and seems silly taking that risk this early in the season. If it were last 10 gameweeks and werrle chasing seems good, I suppose if you've had a terrible start sitting 2m+ probably worth the punt too.

Quite likely, yes. Those fixtures aren't that bad from attacking point of view and better teams don't just park the bus when they are two goals behind. This will give Haaland opportunities in counter attacks. I have ditched Gvardiol and not planning to have any other MCI def, but C Haaland and Alvarez are going nowhere from my team.

Could be, could be. Thing is, if we don’t class those fixtures as that bad, when do we class them as that bad? Would Pep prefer a controlled 1-0 win like he did a few times last year, or will he go guns blazing? I think with the thin squad, the former could be more likely, more cagey etc.

I don't believe better teams to be happy to lose with only one (or 2) goal. They will try to attack if they are behind and that usually means goals. Haaland will assist some of them and score some others. However, with intuition(?) only, I have a feeling that he has been very often involved in counter attack goals.

However, if are starting to see MCI walking, I am happy to change my mind. Haaland won't be the highest scorer every week, but how likely are we going to be able to pick that better asset. Some naturally will succeed, like those who gave armband to Trippier last week, but it's going to be very difficult.

My team after a hit to bring in Kabore AND Morris.

    Areola
    Trippier Kabore Botman
    Saka Doku Salah Son
    Haaland Alvarez Morris

    Turner Nakamba Udogie Lamptey

Would you do an extra hit to take out Saka, and for whom?

          Sterling.

For Bowen if you can't afford Maddison or Son.

Saka is a sell only if he's out and not sure about the hit. Could be worth it for Son tho.

Probably and almost certainly pays over 2 games.

A hit now does also effectively give you another future free transfer, if set on it next.

          it works.

If Sterling is your free transfer next week to Bowen anyway

.... then by hitting him out this week you have an 'extra' free transfer for something else next week.

          I get it's conceptual.

a hit this week by definition allows an extra free transfer next week.

you've got to think about it differently.

you've paid the points price this week.

I guess it's not for everyone!

Apologies my reply was mixed up with a reply to ACDC above who mentioned 2 games.

I still it has the potential to backfire ahead of the next two. Fine perhaps, if you plan and actually keep Bowen.

I was initially letting that put me off him but in reality it's only a one match ban when he gets booked and I'm sure my team can cope with him missing a single game...

Having said that, Joelinton is back in training and when fit could be first choice in that position...

    Thoughts here? 2FT, 1.7m ITB

    Areola (Leno)
    Estupiñán Cash Schar (Chilwell Udogie)
    Son Saka* Maddison* Sterling Mbeumo
    Haaland Awoniyi (Archer)

Thinking Chilwell out (to Kabore?) is smartest move at the moment, followed by replacing Sterling. Saka out could make it easier to move for Salah soon, but obviously only a “possibility” per Arteta

Wouldn't sell Gvardiol for worse option this week, rolling is better idea. Saka has Bou which is tempting if he is fit, but Arteta should be able to rest him and we know that he has been carrying an injury also.

    RMWCT draft no 5

Here we go, draft number 4!
    Areola / Turner
    Trippier, Botman, Tark, Cash, Udogie
    Salah, Son, Bowen, JWP, Nakamba
    Darwin, Alvarez, Haaland

    0.2 itb

Injured Maddison and Saka are both out for now. Having both Bowen and JWP this week is aggressive, but next week vs New is not optimal. Third double up is Salah + Darwin. I'd prefer Watkins, but don't have the funds unless I ditch Udogie who has 3 nice fixtures coming.

    1. The Mentaculus
      • 4 Years

Salah/Darwin combo could be gold, but I don't like double WHU mids & that 7.1/6.3/4.5 structure in midfield doesn't leave you many other places to go. Locks you out of Saka without surgery and if Rashford were to start firing too you'd be in trouble
