    Is this crazy talk......

    4.5 / 4.0
TAA, Gvardiol, Pedro P, (Barco, 4.0)
    Palmer, Son, Saka, Jota, Bailey
    Isak, Wood (Muniz)

surely this lot can score more points than a premium and a bunch of 6.5's?....surely

I'd be very surprised if Palmer doesn't start. He didn't play that much in the Euros and they need him against City

Why does anyone think the hundreds of thousands of pounds a week these teams pay players that they’ll get a week or two off? They’re all back in training already.

Jota likely a bench player unless Slot surprises us.

They're human employees, not tools. It makes sense, even financially, to let your employees recover. Physically and mentally

It's also why players get rested during the season

I think there is a chance of some of these players playing/starting in GW1 but doesn't necessarily mean they will be firing, and could see reduced minutes if they've had no pre-season

I’m on similar lines to you but I’ve downgraded Son to Nkunku at this time with allows a really strong defence and probably a better balance.

      Raya 4.0
      Gvardiol Porro Mykolenko Robinson Barco

Not just Nunez though, Gakpo as well. There wasn’t baggage with Nunez, Jota fought with injury last year and Nunez is a World class striker as he proved at the Copa. He’s an all round player not a Harry Kane. Think Jota is behind him, Gakpo and Diaz … but Slot may have a totally different view!

I guess he will start GW1. Have him in my draft atm. He can be downgraded when roulation with Gakpo, Darwin and Diaz starts. Maybe to the Pool no.10 or the likes of Gordon/Eze etc. Hopefully he gets at least a run for GW 1-3. Looked decent in preseason.

    Stumbled on this for now…

    NFO
    Trent / Munoz / VDV
    Salah / BrunoF / Gordon / Nkunku / Hwang

I know you'll be thinking you can just downgrade Salah/Haaland and redistribute in the first few weeks, but this'll use all your transfers, and the question then is, why start with them?

I’m still a bit undecided which way I’m going to start. Like many, I have a few drafts that I like.
The plan with this draft is that I hope not to have to transfer any of the big hitters out and that they start well.
It’s the old adage of it’s easier to downgrade, than upgrade. ty

Why do people prefer Saliba to Gabriel? Is Gabriel a doubt or something for the first game?

    1. Chris_l25

I think some are worried Califiori could be his competition for the LCB position. Personally I think Califiori will play at LB

I think people are concerned about the arsenal defensive acquisitions disrupting the setup and are judging Saliba to be more nailed because he is arguably the better player. I can't see Arteta messing with a partnership that worked so well though, at least initially. He just wanted and needed more depth, imo.

Chiefly because Gabriel saw the odd benching last season, whereas Saliba started every game. However, Arteta's spoken about not repeating that this go round, and we've Calafiori to factor in now

'We were really short in the backline last season in terms of numbers and we demanded so much from them. Willy [Saliba], for example, played every minute of the Premier League and we believe that we have to be much more protected'.

Calafiori (especially) and Timber pose starting risks. It's not clear if Arteta plans to break up Gabriel's partnership with Saliba again, like he did at the start of last season

      1. Haa-lala-land

Yes it's really similar to then, except swap Zinchenko for Califiori.

      Timber is a RB/RCB
      Calafiori is a LB/LCB

Next step for Arteta is to have options to be able to rest certain players at the right times, Merino joining adds to that. Interpret that as you will but he’s dropped enough hints that players will be protected now he has options.

I think we need an article on historically how many players that were away for International Tournaments started their first game weeks. Perhaps one that explains that if they didn't it would be because they came back late to pre season and were deemed not match ready.

We keep seeing the same comments saying this player hardly played, so he'll be fine, when it's nothing to do with that. It's based on whether the coaches and manager think they're up to speed, after not training whilst on holiday, to be thrown into these gruelling matches. Which is of course why they have pre season friendlies.

It would be interesting to know how many goals and who scored them after 90 minutes.
This could be compared with prior seasons as it is an anomaly last season.
IMO the extra time will drop from last year back to somewhat normal.
It could have an impact on FPL picks.

You make a good point here. The premier league tends to swing the pendulum for one season only, to reset the balance, then revert back to the status quo. I'm thinking that previous season or so, when many penalties were being awarded for relatively minor fouls, then it swung back half way through the season.

        1. Eze Really?

There were 138 goals in added time last year (inc. first half), 100 in end of game stoppage time which is a 35 per cent increase on the old record of 102 goals total set in 2016/17.

What’s more, a new high of 12.8 per cent of all goals have been scored in stoppage time. Previous high was 9.6% also in 16/17.

Most end of game stoppage time goals: Arsenal 10, Chelsea 8, Liverpool 7, City, Fulham, Brentford, Newcastle 6, Spurs, Luton, Utd, Wolves, West Ham 5, rest 4 or less.

Yeah Saliba is such a strong pick and favourable over Raya.

Could go for Pope + 4.0 indeed, but it's also a personal preference for me to choose between 2 solid GK options each GW and not relying on one.

I think he will for certain. Arsenal have not showed any intention to buy a striker and Jesus is more of a squad player now. Seems like Arteta likes Havertz leading the line so I see no reason to be wary of that.

Good Morning. Regards the earlier poster who asked about players starting/not starting three season after international tournaments, I had a quick look at 21/22 as that was the time we also reached the Euros final. There were 34 days between that match at Wembley and the opening Friday night fixture in the PL.

Of those who played in the final, Pickford, Shaw, Maguire, Mount, Sterling and Sancho all started the first league match. Saka came on as a sub. Rashford, Kane, Walker and Stones didn’t appear. Trippier was still playing in Spain at the start of that season.

I might have missed a few players out, but I think that gives a general idea. It looks like approx 50% of our finalists started the season in the first team.

Would you expect around the same this time?

Although Saka did come on last night in their friendly win. I’d expect him to start the season actually. Plus Arteta was hardly keen to rest him at all last season anyway!

Agree that the Man City ones will be eased back more gradually though (Pep has already said as much)

Team dependant - size of squad, players availability and how fit they are by GW1.

More likely the players that arrived late for preseason from the likes of City and Liverpool are to be eased in.

I think Arsenal/Arteta (Saka) and Chelsea (Palmer) might be the exception.

Important/talisman players in smaller squads like Eze should start

I think it has reduced his FPL appeal, certainly for the start of the season anyway. Arteta may be keen on trying the Havertz left 8 hybrid role again.

I'm currently on Henderson over Flekken.

Henderson #1 (looking to sell Johnstone), Palace defensive numbers from last season and the structure swaying me to start with Henderson.

Havertz would be nailed in my team if I thought he was going to be #9. As above, I'm not so sure now, given the recent Jesus performances. Definitely an opportunity to perhaps spread some funds though.

The more I think about it, the less I like Trent.

We have no idea how he's gonna be used, he's late back from the Euros, and Liverpool overall are a bit of an unknown under their new coach.

He's really expensive and takes money away from having more flexibility/reliability in midfield. Downgrading him could enable a move like Jota > Son.

I've come to this epiphany in the last hour myself Camzy. Except in my case running with a Salah+Haaland draft it will be a case of turning the likes of ESR into Eze.

With the chance to roll transfers properly, it will be easier to get someone like TAA in after 3-4 weeks without having to take hits or play the wildcard.

You can make a similar argument RE “how is he going to be used?” With Salah. Slot likes his wingers to hold width, Salah likes to come inside. Pretty good chance his output drops if he is used to hold width more under Slot.

I think I'm almost there... but I need your advice.Current squad:

    Pope / Fabianski
    Gvardiol / Andersen / Saliba / Faes / Barco
MGW / De Bruyne / Salah / Saka / Rogers
    Watkins / Vardy / Isak

De Bruyne possible switch to Foden later on, same for MGW to another 6.5.

One thing that remains: I would like to upgrade one the 4.0's to a 4.5.

    A) Downgrade Vardy
    B) Downgrade Pope
    C) Downgrade Rogers
    D) Keep it as is!
