Perisic, Doherty, Bergwijn, Ndombele, Aurier, Llorente... A good signing on paper doesn't always materialise in results.

In fairness, Spurs signings in the last couple of seasons have assimilated better, but it's always a risk.

The more he starts the more I'm just considering Quansah as a 5th defender. Start him for his good fixtures and even if he gets benched later on, its only 0.5 more for a lot of potential points up for grabs

So have not kept track with a lot of the comings and goings in preseason this year. Life and all that jazz. Have just had a chance to have a read and look at some of the articles to piece this together.

    Areola
    Gvardiol, Saliba, Van de Ven
    Salah, Saka, Palmer, Eze, Minteh
    Isak, Toney

    Subs: Fab, Pedro, Harwood, Greaves

    Am I missing anything glaring?

    Toney or Solanke?

Who is the best 4.0m Defender?

Salah vs No Salah; based on Son vs Leicester who have been awful all pre-season:

    Flekken (Valdi)
Burn / Udogie / Munoz (Harwood / Barco)
    Salah / Eze / CHO / Gordon / Jota
    Haaland / Isak (Pedro)

    Or

    Flekken (Valdi)
Burn / Porro / Munoz (Harwood / Barco)
    Son / Bruno / CHO / Gordon / Jota
    Haaland / Isak (Wissa)

Nice team, Bobb seems like a transfer waiting to happen but I'm sure you've factored that in. Quansah may miss the odd game too.

      1. The Mentaculus
        • 4 Years

I'm increasingly getting the feeling that Bobb's going to be a serious option with plenty of starts this season. Saw something in the Athletic about Pep using Foden & Silva more centrally leaving Bobb & Savio to compete for RW - and I also suspect might Savio used on the left a decent amount too. But I've picked 8 attackers in case it doesn't pan out that way so there's no rush to sell.

Not so sure about Quansah tbh but at 4.5m with a full playing squad I think I'll take a chance

I think Andreas played deeper in a double pivot again yesterday with ESR as the 10...? And ESR scored again. He'd be my preference there.

How much stock do people put in this AI team rater that is on every YouTube ad and being pushed by a good lot of the influencers right now?

Agreed. I think they’re bandying around the term AI as some sort of oracle but the reality is it’s only as good as the data it’s given to interpret.

So many influencers saying “AI thinks this”. AI doesn’t think anything it just speeds up the processing of the data.

Nada. I'll have a look at some of the points projections but don't agree with all of them (especially where there's virtually no relevant data, e.g. Liverpool players in a new system against Ipswich). Once that's all automated into a % figure I lose interest tbh

Football is an emotional game played by humans with all their ingenuity & faults not robots. AI is being promoted as a cure for all human failings.... It fails

      1. Tomerick
        • 11 Years
        1 year, 3 months ago

Exactly. The mask often slips where they talk about the AI “changing its mind” once they update that a player has moved or is injured. It’s literally just speeding up data science that you could do yourself with the same data.

What XI looks best? Differences in Caps Lock:

    Henderson
    Murillo-Hall-Gvardiol
    Eze-GARNACHO-JOTA-Saka
    SOLANKE-Isak-Haaland

    Bench: Iversen-Nkunku-JOHNSON-Faes

    Henderson
    Murillo-Hall-Gvardiol
    Eze-SON-AMAD-Saka
    WOOD-Isak-Haaland

    Bench: Iversen-Nkunku-ROBINSON-Faes

On the face of it I preferred the first but looking at it the second one gives you more flexibility.

Yeah I've been on the second one for a couple of weeks now. But that Solanke transfer and Jota looking like he might be first choice made me rethink my XI.

Very relevant to the Article above (and because of it)

This is the BB gw 1 draft I threw together.

    4 Spurs - 3 Newcastle - 3 Liverpool - 3 Arsenal - 1 Villa/Forest.

    No Man City at all.

This was the result (which I cannot changed once Solanke's transfer is locked to Spurs.

    Pope/Raya

    --

    VDV - Porro - Quansah - Saliba - Murillo

    --

    Murphy - Jota - Salah - Son - Rogers

    --

    Havartz - Solanke - Isak

    --

WC gw2 obviously. I think it is best BB gw1 team I can think of on paper.

Unless there is something obvious I am missing? I avoided the Forest keeper minefield. And gambling on which Newcastle full back would start.
14 of the 15 should start plus Solanke I think?

Could be a fun start to the season. Not sure I like the WC in GW2, but maybe the fact we can save more FTs means you can still negotiate the fixture swings in later GWs.

That's what I plan saving transfers (if I go the BB gw1 route) - I went that way last year worked well, and it was fun. All downhill after that!

It makes the gw2 wildcard crucial. I have not even looked at that yet but was thinking three Fulham plus Haaland/Foden for sure.

I do find it strange how people pick a team as soon as the game launches and then spend the next several weeks before the season starts changing it 100 times every time some noob scores in a meaningless pre-season game. What is that about? Bizarre waste of time. Forget about FPL until it starts and enjoy the summer.

People would save so much precious time waiting until a day or 2 before the GW1 deadline to pick a team when all possible information is known, teams moving to other teams, injuries, team news, predicted line ups etc.

It’s fun to tinker, but you have to accept that you’ll never settle til the last week

Some guys were nailing down their team 3 weeks ago in the assumption that all the England lads would be back

Pre season is the most fun part of the season, we can tinker, discuss different approaches and be full of hope, dreaming about smashing it and beating all our opposition in mini leagues.

As soon as the GW1 starts, the sad reality of “almost hauled”, “on another day he would have hauled” kicks in and season full of misery begins.

Yes exactly that. So many seemingly getting over excited about the start of the season but lets face it, for the majority, despite all the planning, misery will await and everything turns to crap after the first few weeks.

Just the way FPL is. Normally in life the more you put into something the more you get out of it but that doesn't seem to apply to FPL purely because of the amount of luck involved.

I distance myself from it so much during the summer now that I actually struggle to find the motivation to pick a team when GW1 approaches which is where I am now. I will end up playing as its been a habit of 18 years but it's all feeling very meh.

True. I setup a team quickly few weeks ago and then just watched olympics. Now i am tinkering again

Yeah, but it's the only time where you can play the game, make changes and get nothing wrong because no points are involved.

Best part of the game IMO -
An early draft provides a foundation for subsequent drafts. And can be used to gauge initial thoughts.

Subsequent drafts can be a combination or show which way you were thinking line up wise. I noticed there were a number of teams/players who have not left my initial draft at all.

As we get nearer kick off. people think they can land that perfect eleven for gw1 and even the perfect bench.
