As Valentin Barco‘s (£4.0m) temporary exit from Brighton and Hove Albion draws nearer, his owners in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) have mostly been asking two things.

One, who are the best replacements? That’s something Tom Freeman tackled in an article earlier this week.

And two, will Barco’s price be locked if he heads out on loan?

How the FPL market works is a bit of a mystery, with no clarity on what the requirements are for players to rise and fall. It’s linked to purchases and sales, of course, but the exact thresholds are known only by the games-makers themselves. A look at the leading price prediction websites underscores the uncertainty.

There’s nothing written about how player prices are treated after a departure from a club, either.

Some have speculated that prices are locked when a played is made ‘unavailable’. Others have suggested that the rises and falls merely slow, rather than stop altogether.

With that in mind, we thought we’d take a look at past precedents for any clues.

LAST 50 PLAYERS LOANED OUT IN THE WINTER TRANSFER WINDOW

Here, we’ve listed the last 50 loan exits. We’ve also documented when the red flags were added, the price at the point of departure and the end 2023/24 price:

We could go on. So, then, a very long-winded way of saying there were no price falls after a red flag was added.

None of these players had the massive ownership that Barco boasts, of course.

A better example would perhaps be Joao Cancelo. The right-back fell so swiftly out of favour at Manchester City in 2022/23 that he went from well-owned FPL asset to Bayern Munich loanee in the blink of an eye.

PlayerClubDate of red flagPrice at the point of red flagEnd priceTransfers out after red flag
CanceloMCIJan 31£7.1m£7.1m1,112,751

The transfers out column doesn’t even include the 1,445,499 sales in the same Gameweek of his departure (he left midway through), as there’s no way of knowing how many occured before or after his exit. Most likely would have been after.

So, then, in the absence of anything official from FPL towers, the evidence does point to prices being locked.

This is only after the red flag is added, of course. Owners of Barco will be hoping that’s swiftly processed if and when he does exit, to protect against any possible price drop.

After a disappointing GW1, I might have dropped out of the LMS competition.

Where can I find the safety score?

Last year's website seems not to be working anymore and I couldn't find any new links. I googled it and found something like safety score 52, but can't view it on X as I don't have an account with Mr. Musk.

So the note on FPL Statistics is meaningless then?

    10. "When a player is injured (0% chance of playing), suspended or on loan his price can still change in value. However, once his status has changed (to fully available) his price will be "locked".

I don't have much faith in fpls any more. Got burned too many times last season with random price rises that wasn't representative of what their real time data was reporting

It's not meaningless. The injury and suspension red flag are correct. The loan part needs needs to be expanded further.

If you search transferred/loaned out players on fplstatistics, the target is 0.0, implying the price can't be changed. (e.g. Paulsen and Gross).

FPL remove players from the FPL transfer page once the transfer/loan out the PL is complete and red flagged

This is my reasoning for it: an unavailable player isn't just flagged, but not available for purchase. @FPLStatus on Twitter usually shows these updates

There's no point in changing the player's price, as that price is technically the purchasing price. You can't buy a player who isn't in the market, so sales don't affect the price anymore, as any price drops will only serve to punish those unlucky to have him already

Yes at least until gw4. Plan is to bank transfers until then and reassess. Having a slightly stronger overall squad feels luxurious.

Probably playing Onana and De Ligt over Raya and Gabriel, will have Gabriel 1st sub in case Porro doesn't make it.

Hall vs Gabriel as first sub...don't know where I will land. I expect Arsenal to concede.

The certainty with which FPL “experts” said that Barco was a great pick and a “no brainer” just shows that they have no knowledge beyond what is already public.

    Same with the Milenkovic suspension.

Absolutely. They know no more than anyone competent and engaged. Go back 6 or 7 years and a lot of them were posting dumb "a or b" questions and RMTs on here like everybody else.

Of course they don't they are not sages, just (loud)mouths with mics.

The Milenkovic one really annoyed me (as I bench boosted as it was not flagged by FPL itself. Supposedly he was banned.

One the Barco one there was warning that Brighton could play a midfielder there instead. Enough to make me swerve it.

There's a lot in this game that noone can know, not the FPL experts, content creators, you, me and all the other managers in this game.
A lot goes on guessing, sometimes the guess is right, and sometimes the guess is wrong. Sometimes it seems like you failed in one GW, just to be proven that you were wrong the upcoming GWs, and the other way around.

That's what's exciting about this game, there's a lot of skilles involved, but the luck/bad luck part is also playing a big part of it: it's not maths, stats doesn't always give you points, you can't predict and calculate injuries, loans, transfers, pandemics, weather etc.

For instance, club correspondents for The Athletic might be consider experts on that club. They likely have an inside track.

You have to go ESR surely, otherwise why have him?

On Man United the vibe is they might be more defensively solid.

Ten Hag was quick to talk up their defensive record from two seasons ago.

      https://ie.soccerway.com/national/england/premier-league/20222023/regular-season/r69471/

Where when their first choice defence was available they had the joint second best defensive record.

      4. Unless you think Gordon's homeboy scoring habit continues as he has 3 of the next 4 away, and his only 2 home games in the next 6 are Spurs and Man City. But the level of opponents in the away games should give him the chances he needs. Plus Spurs.

If that's a worry, 2 and 3 are both good.

Just realised that my strategy this year includes the selection of "safe differentials" - players whose potential is strong, whose starts are safe, but who maybe overlooked or underrated:

    Henderson
    Munoz Andersen Robinson
    Palmer (c) Jota Szoboszlai Odegaard
    Haaland Havertz Cunha

    Flekken Murphy Mykolenko Konsa
