A Watkins (might be dropping later in the week)

      Welbeck if you want value.

Pedro or Wissa or Havertz are probably better though.

I wouldn't get Watkins if you are after value. Buy him in a few weeks when he's cheaper. He's likely to rise only when he scores or does something.

      67.

      58 - Haaland (C)
      2 - Muniz
      1 - Archer
      ? - Jebbison (likely 0-1)
      6 - Sels

Could only really have been better with Welbeck & Pedro over Muniz & Archer.

I was going to build a varied team then remembered it's not the main game & could afford to have a bit of fun.

Easy captain choice with Haaland, wouldn't have been so sure with the others and they'd probably have blanked.

OR at 6.5m. I've got triple Liverpool, triple Newcastle, and Jebbison (lol) left. Mind's already off any form of hope though

I replaced the knocked Solanke with the ill Foden. It could have been anybody in Man City who got ill this morning after being seen in normal training this week: KDB, Haaland, Gvardiol. Heck, it could have been Son or Saka. No stats or sleuthing will predict the timing of that. It just had to be Foden (-4). Thanks, fate

I know that the best reaction to this is to do absolutely nothing, as my team is fine. It's just gonna be a long week of ignoring captains hindsight. I'll see how much of that I can stomach while still interacting with the awesome community here

dont stress too much its part of the game, most of ur team hasnt played yet, plus even if they dont end up doing too well, its only gw 2, people join the game after and still get good ranks at the end of the season.

Yeah. It's just disheartening to go from Schar's red (captained Isak) to Solanke's knock before facing the decimated Everton backline, to this. I can't look back at any of the decisions and say they were stupid, because the reasons they went wrong were completely unforeseeable. Trying to look forward, but it's really ripped the fun out. I haven't even had the bandwidth to react to Eze's luck again. Dude hit the bar. Great

I made similar moves.. Solanke to Muniz and Ode to Foden for a hit and for a few hours I was absolutely livid with the misfortune..then I realized this is a 38 gw journey with inevitable ups and downs every year and this can't/won't stop the enjoyment I have playing fpl or interacting with the community.

It's normal to feel this way. You made a decision to go without Haaland, suck it up. I played my wc because of this reason even though I usually do in gw 2. It felt wrong to go without Erling.

On the bright side, it's only gw 2 and you still have players left to play. Good time to learn from it & improve things otherwise why play the game?

Every manager here would make a mistake at some point, human nature, only depends on how one reacts. Good luck!

This isn't about Haaland. This is about Foden falling ill this morning after Solanke got a tackle on his ankle after Schar got a red card

If my complaint was that KDB or Doku or Bilva didn't get as many points as Haaland, then that's my expectation going against me

I didn't get Foden because I expected him to outscore Haaland. I got him because I expected him to play in some nice fixtures, like I expected Solanke to play, and expected Newcastle to have eleven men on the pitch in GW1... See where that gets frustrating? That's my complaint: absolutely no way to predict an illness on the morning of the game

        1. PartyTime
          • 4 Years

We both know you wouldn't make this comment if Haaland blanked, he is also part of the reason but okay, you're right and I'm wrong

          1. Ze_Austin
            • 7 Years
            1 year, 3 months ago

I wouldn't be upset that a player I got for a hit fell ill after the press conference because a popular player blanked?

Haaland got just 7 points in GW1 and I was still upset about Schar's red card affecting my Isak captain's chances of a haul

Son didn't get a hat trick, but I'm still unhappy that Solanke missed out on the easy Everton game due to a GW2 knock, after playing all games last season

Which of these was a foreseeable mistake? What would your correction be to avoid getting an ill player next time?

          • 4 Years

Foden wasn't guaranteed to start. The nailed on option is Haaland. I have had players miss games and I accept I was unlucky but don’t feel the same way you do.

"Trying to look forward but it's really ripped the fun out"

          1. Ze_Austin
            • 7 Years
            1 year, 3 months ago

Okay, so you were unlucky when it happened to you, but I made a mistake when it happened to me? I see. Thanks

Again, this had nothing to do with Haaland. The players expected to start all started, except the *ill* Foden. I could have gotten KDB, but he wasn't as nailed as Foden when both were fit last year. Foden was on a post-Euros holiday, not recovering from an injury. He was back from the holiday and played 45 minutes in GW1. I saw him as the better long-term option than the other City options, and Haaland was never in the picture for me because I've got Salah as my captain and spread the funds

My complaint isn't about Haaland getting an expected hat trick. It's about getting a player who fell ill on the morning of the game, missing out on one of his easiest games of the season. It's about this happening just two GWs in, after getting him for a player who missed an easy game because of a rare injury, after having a captain miss out on a haul due to a 28th-minute red card

If you don't see how this run of issues *by just GW2* can rip the fun out of a game after all the planning and expectation that goes into it, then I think there's an empathy problem there

It comes down to Haaland. If you picked him you would most likely be less keen on picking Foden even if you were, you just might not pick him

The hit was to remove an injured player, and I wanted a City attacker long-term. The hit could have been Salah + Solanke to Haaland + Mitoma/Szobo, but I didn't want to lose any of my other players. I wouldn't feel this way if Foden was benched. That's gonna be hands up, saying "I made a mistake, Pep roulette is back and Foden - one of the safest last season - is not safe anymore"

That's something to learn from. That's a mistake. That's new data that differs from last season

The sucker punch of red card to knock to illness is disheartening, which is my point

Plenty (most?) captained Isak GW1 and suffered from the Schar red card. Plenty had Solanke to deal with GW2. Those situations really had nothing to do with your decision to bring in Foden for a hit.

...and if I'd gotten KDB's 12 points for that same hit? I got the City attacker I wanted long-term, based on the data I had from last season, and his 45 minutes in GW1 showing he was back from his holiday

If he's benched because he's not Pep's preferred starter anymore, that's on me. If he falls ill on the morning of the game, that's not related to the Pep roulette

Could have been anybody ill, right? There's no new data there. I haven't learnt anything about Foden's starting chances from GW3

And the situations are related in one simple way: unforeseeable circumstances

I can't learn how to predict which team will get a random red card from their player's headbutt. I can't predict which player will get an ankle injury from a tackle. I can't predict which player will fall ill *after* the press conference. That's the connecting chain for me

I'm not the type to be happy because others have it as bad or worse than me. You can check my comment history to see me talk about the Schar red card. I knew (C)Isak was popular, but it hurt because I couldn't have predicted that when picking my captain

If I had any hint Foden could possibly be ill, like missing training, I'd have gotten Mateta for free (my bad) or KDB for a hit

Again, Foden on the bench in GW2? My mistake. My error. I learn from that. I understand he's no longer as safe as last season. I sell him or accept the rotation risk and reassess over the next 2 GWs

I make many mistakes. The point of this is the hard luck of going from a red card to a knock to a morning illness. If Foden's benched in GW3 and GW4, I accept my mistake

I'm not claiming to be perfect. I'm saying this brutal luck, just two GWs in, can suck the fun out of the game for me

If he fell ill and you had him with his 50% ownership, you realize you don’t die alone aka damage limitation & you wouldn’t feel like the world is against you, basically, it’s against everyone. Right?

I don't feel like the world is against me. Isak was nearly 60% owned when his returns were limited to just an assist by an early red card. Foden wasn't even my captain or vice-captain this week

I never feel better because others are suffering. That's not how my empathy works. Especially not when I live in Nigeria

It sucks because I couldn't have foreseen it. Because it follows two events I couldn't have foreseen. My OR right now isn't due to wild decisions like a team full of differentials or capping Wood. If I'd gotten KDB as my City attacker and he fell ill while Foden got the 12 points, I'd have felt the same way

I fully support Ze_Austin in expressing their frustrations. I had a great first half of a season last time out, which was utterly destroyed by a long string of injuries - I know bad luck when I see it.

My one area of disagreement is over Foden. Based on last year's form, he was indeed a shoe-in to the Starting XI once fit. However, having analysed City's play against Chelsea in GW1 I felt I could see how Pep has progressed City's tactics for this season. He's obviously closely observed the players in training and has made some big calls which have detrimental knock-on effects to players such as Gvardiol and Foden which Is why I ignored the noise to swerve them both.

Rico Lewis is important - he's not a simple cheap stand-in for Walker. He won't be a 1% differential after he puts in a third successive impressive display next GW. Further up the pitch, Pep's found a great balance with Doku, KDB and Savinho behind Haaland. It works, and Foden is not an obvious fit.

The line-ups will change with bi-weekly matches, and then Peptation will become the familiar headache. Then the usual advice will apply - only Haaland is nailed in a City Starting XI. That includes the risk of guessing which players - like Foden - will play mostly PL matches or be saved for the CL.

I understand this, but Pep adapts to the available players

In GW1, he didn't have his Euros players available. Lewis inverts when he plays, as he has a different skillset to Walker

If all players were available when Pep went with that GW1 lineup, I'd have been more inclined to agree that he's tweaked the system

But he's had to adapt to many absences, including Rodri and, funnily enough, Alvarez. It remains to be seen if this is the way he'll progress

And then, there's the fact that Foden played many of his minutes at AM last season, so I expect him to partner KDB ahead of Rodri, rather than be shunted to RW. Pep rotated KDB more often than usual last season, even when fit. That said, I'll see how Pep evolves the team when he's got all of them available. Foden could yet turn out to be a mistake, but he did play 45 minutes in Pep's new-ish system in GW1 anyway (due to an injury at RW, tbf), so I didn't expect him out of Pep's starting XI plans

              Foden's positions last season:

Pep usually finds a way to keep him in the starting Xi, due to his goal threat. That could change this season, of course

Absolutely crazy to think Foden would be left out for any tactical reason, if that were the case he would be benched..got caught by an illness which is extremely unlucky and anything else is just nonsense tbh

To be fair, Pep has evolved his team past some players before. I remember Mahrez

Doesn't seem right for that to be Foden after the season he had just the previous year, especially when he wasn't expected to start GW1 anyway due to the Euros break, but it's possible with Pep

I expect Foden to start when he's recovered from the illness. Bilva, Savio or Doku will make way for City's second-best goal threat. If that doesn't happen, Andy's right

I have no doubt whatsoever that Foden was not in the matchday SQUAD due to illness; my comments are focused on the starting line-up. It's my contention that Rodri was the only player omitted solely due to not being match fit due to the Euros.
Trying to penetrate Pep's mind and second-guess his tactics from match to match is a highly subjective exercise, I fully agree, but it's my (subjective) analysis that Lewis and Savio are more important than people realise (and your callback to Mahrez hits the nail on the head there).
Rather than playing Foden alongside KDB, I suspect they'll alternate - KDB won't play twice a week. Who gets the bulk of the PL games is impossible to ascertain at the moment, and the same goes for the rest of the squad other than Haaland - and Rodri, both of whom tend to play every game they're available for.

                  https://www.transfermarkt.com/jeremy-doku/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/486049/plus/0?saison=2023&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=GB1&pos=&trainer_id=

Understood. Doku has an end-product issue though, and I think that affected his minutes last season. So Foden, their second most clinical player, is expected to start at LW/RW even when KDB starts. I understand that Pep updates his system every season. I'd just be pretty shocked to see that it involves Foden starting fewer matches

Remember how fluid City's attack looked when Haaland was injured? They've scored many goals in the games he's missed or been rested for:

                  https://www.transfermarkt.com/erling-haaland/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/418560/plus/0?saison=&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=GB1&pos=&trainer_id=

...but it doesn't make any of us suggest he'll become a rotation risk or that Pep's adapted tactics to his absence are gonna be sustained long-term

I know that Foden isn't at Haaland's level. I'd just be surprised to find out that GWs 1 and 2 are long-term tactics

Something similar applies to Lewis vs Walker, as Lewis has looked good almost every time he's played over the last two seasons. Yet Pep always finds his way back to Walker. This might finally be Lewis' season though, and that would be very exciting

          Morning Ze_Austin,

My Thoughts with you & family words cannot describe the pain you are going through for comfort,
I have been there when my mum in YR2022 from Dementia battling for over 5 years (awful) & then suddenly mother-in-law taken from us beginning of YR2023 with unexpected heart attack which my wife has not come to terms with yet top of living with covid-19 & needing an outlet on life which FPL gives me.

I agree 100% FPL can be extremely annoying/frustrating but it is my outlet. I have only come across this site last year after now in my 13th year. I'm not on social media & with AI finding it hard to get back into the top 100,000 but have looked at things differently this year to enjoy the community/fun of the strategy with possible Plan B if dropped/injured will work with players on bench that will start to gain a point or two

I noticed last season on FPL a few points different you can climb 200,000 to 400,000 so all hope is not lost.

I have taken a different stance to FPL this season to enjoy more & have set myself a squad to deal with the first 3 GWs
to cover some injuries & now take my usual (-4) hits which in turn costed me a lot of places. GW2 I have roll my FT / GW3 aim to do the same then WC for GW4 (during international week) time to assess/monitor price changes & international break/injuries which will give me for the first time in so can then utilise this new FPL change with options to change if needed - if lucky I will then RFT in GW5 to give me three in the bank for future events (fingers cross)

          ---

(Mistakes/luck etc - already this season) I was gutted last (GW1) as had switched Salah on Thursday night as decided to play a BB in GW1 so with limited DGW this season felt could get rid if this chip & then look for a stronger starting eleven.
Not helped as possible like yourself with Schar getting sent off - affected my captain choice in Isak & Gordon option on my BB GW1 bench scores - yours has been tough/hard.

(GW2) I decided to put ESR on the bench as unsure 100% on game time & choose to select Wood against one of the promoted teams as had a good GW1 - again did not work. Try not to worry about the 'OR position' until after the GW has finished as you mentioned - got triple Liverpool, triple Newcastle, and Jebbison left;. Seven players (out of starting eleven to play) with I'm guessing Salah/Isak as captain option to come in an a chance to still climb a lot of OR places - I feel you will move up possible million of places.

Takecare 'Ze-Austin' - thoughts are with you/family now & look forward to FPL chats/advice in the forth coming season.

      Unlucky.

Despite what people are saying (e.g., 'it's only GW2') you are already at a disadvantage. Can you catch up? Yes. But is it easy? No.

FPL is getting more and more about the start, unfortunately. It is much easier to hold a lead than it was five years ago. The player pool is already narrowing and it is only GW2. I say you got about 6 GWs to get into a decent position (e.g. 1.5m OR at worst) otherwise it will be tough.

You will get people on here saying I went for 1.5m OR to 10k from GW19 to GW34 etc. They are the exception rather than the rule.

And yeah, (C)Salah with enough players left

I usually recover from these things, but bad luck has a special way it stings when it hits multiple times in a row

Hoping to climb out of it by being patient with the squad I have. No panic or ripped up plans for now

    Best 4.5 defender?

Mykolenko dropping is tough, seems a silly transfer to make but price drops are far from ideal this early in the season.

Looking at Robinson, Kilman, Dunk etc. Mazraoui & Lewis a bit punty perhaps.

Had to do Solanke>Muniz because of my thin bench. On the hindsight, a transfer wasted.

Original plan was to go for Watkins and a Chelsea 6.5 for Isak and Gordon after GW2. Won't work anymore. Even the Brereton pick over Semenyo and Minteh didn't work out.

Now my options to get a Villa cover are:
    A : Brereton > (1) Rogers / (2) Bailey

People still bought him even Brighton play Arsenal (A)... Literally the hardest fixture. Lol.

The lad who replaced Cash at RB, is he nailed on now? I didnt see how bad Cash’s injury was.

Waiting for Emery's update there too. 4.0 Villa RB with those fixtures can break the game

I suspect we have a new 4.0m defender who jumps to the top of the list. If he starts GW3 (and think he will) and price rise will quickly follow.

Emery has said after the game Konsa will play CB and RB will be Cash/Kosta

Just a hamstring injury so might only miss around 3 games. Is it worth the transfer?

Hamstring injuries can stretch from weeks to months, depending on the grade

I wouldn't go there if Cash is only out for a short time though. We'll need a timeline from Emery, true

    Benching headache if Solanke fit.

    Saka Jota Eze ESR Rogers
    Solanke Haaland Isak

Currently benching Eze(che) as ESR(ips) and Rogers(lei) have plum fixtures

So Haaland TC in a dgw is the play for gentlemen & pretty tall ladies out there.

Shame we missed out on this one but something massive could be on the horizon still. Right?

I take this “ game” seriously and probably think about it too much but looking at some of the previous posts I think some people are ridiculously off the scale. It’s week 2 and it seems some people are having a breakdown!!
Remember.. this isn’t only a game of judgement and tactical awareness, it’s also a game of luck. You can’t predict what’s going to happen in the Premier league regarding results and you can’t foresee illnesses or injuries. Maybe that shows you should have at least 1/2 decent bench picks to cover your bad weeks.
    Good morning all x

Not many are having a breakdown except for those who tried “covering Haaland with Foden” alas, to no avail!

Foden doesn't cover Haaland. Foden is a City attacker who plays most City games and tends to score well in FPL. I'm under no illusion that they'll have the same points per match. I didn't cap or vice cap him. Foden fell ill on Saturday morning, missing his easy Ipswich fixture. That's all there is to that

Please stop trying to wind me up. My point has been clear from the start

“Please stop trying to wind me up. My point has been clear from the start”

          Why do you feel targeted?

You’re too petty & may as well bugger off

Stop it both of you. You csn both be right.

Yes if he had Haaland then failings elsewhere are less important. However, you are repeatedly making a logical point without addressing the emotional response, so nothing you say matters. Its humanity 101. If someone is functioning emotionally, you have to match them.

Ze Austin, yes it sucks, you've been dealt poor outcomes from decent decisions and are quite entitled to feel hurt.

I haven't indirectly referred to you in any other comments. I've replied you and explained the emotional impact of having a string of bad luck. Your replies have been "You should just have got Haaland like me" and no empathy or attempt to even understand the point, coming down here to state what's still unrelated to my point. I haven't referred to the decision-making process. That remains to be seen if Foden's benched in GWs 3 and 4, when back from illness

I haven't implied that Foden covers Haaland. I have Havertz and he doesn't cover Saka. I had Solanke and he didn't cover Son. I picked my team for clear reasons, and had players I wanted at each spot in my squad

Nothing about Haaland's hat trick surprised me. Nor did KDB's 12 points. I got Foden because I expected him to start and get some nice returns, here and going forward. Again, my point is about going from Schar's red card to Solanke's ankle injury to Foden's illness

I don't see why this is so hard to understand

Good morning. Please read my post and replies again. I'm describing the bad luck and inability to predict such things. I've also said having a string of such luck so early on can suck the fun out of the game, yet I'll still be here interacting with the community because I like such aspects of the game

I'll be fine, thanks. There are way worse things that have tried to break me down recently, yet I'm here replying et al 🙂

I’m sure your team will come good. It’s early days yet, and Salah is even yet to play.
Knowing how well you support guys on this forum, providing great feedback, it’s only right to offer you the same support when things go sideways.
Foden was on fire last season and it’s only a matter of time before he gets into gear this season as well…
