I see so many teams with 8 playable in attack/midfield.

As I didnt play last few years, is rotation with 0 minutes so common, or is everyone just setting themselves up for a benching headache?

I've stayed away from Semenyo purely to stop the benching headache. He was in on my wildcard but with Saka, Rogers, Mbeumo and Diaz . . .no way he was going to start this week even with a tasty fixture.

I don't think we've ever had an 8th attacker as good as Rogers in the last couple of yrs that's why. Makes sense to spend the extra money rather than go for a 4.5 fodder.

I started them most weeks or every week I had them if i recall. 8th attacker would have to be the cheapest AND worst attacker in your team.

We literally had Palmer last year. He was absolutely priced as an 8th attacker - he just proved to be the best one ever. Rogers doesn’t come close.

Saying Palmer wasn’t an 8th attacker is hindsight talking.

Yes I agree he was at the begining but quickly became indispensable, so you then had someone else as an 8th attacker instead. Kane in his breakout year was kind of the same. Either way, the point is Rogers is an 8th attacker atm. I didn't want to put Rogers in the same bracket as Palmer or Kane because that would just be mis-leading for the point I'm trying to make.

I’ve never thought of 7 vs 8 meaning you actually identify your “8th attacker”. I would define an 8th attacker as any very cheap viable option that allows you to have 8 genuine options. So until he massively hiked in price Palmer was an “8th attacker” regardless of whether you played him every week - that’s how I think of it.

To my mind a player 5-5.5m that hit bench every week is just bench fodder, just slightly more expensive bench fodder.

I guess we're arguing about semantics but I would classify my 8th attacker as my worst and cheapest attacker. Winks would be my 8th attacker if he and Rogers were in my team. If I had 3 rotating 5.0-5.5 with equal playing time, I probably wouldn't call any of them an "8th attcker".

Understood - yea think we just have different notions of the phrases which is fair.

If I borrow your language. I think Rogers is wasted as an 8th attacker. I think he’s been a viable starter (and indeed has started for me) every GW so far, even if returns have only happened once.

Fair - so you're agreeing wih the original poster that you don't need 8 playable attackers if you had Rogers in your team then.

I did another reply in this chain where I essentially say my answer is different pre and post wildcard.

Start of season yes, I don’t think 8 has been necessary - but post wildcard when fixture congestion piles up I’d want slightly more cover.

A really good playable 8 was very easy to achieve last season, so most just went with that.
I think the idea has slipped into this season again, albeit not as easy to get a top notch team. With team squad depths getting much bigger and managers doing 45min transfers and more random resting, I can see how it's becoming more a thing.

It's a trade off. Spend an extra 0.6 on the bench and you get flexibility, redundancy (if a player gets injured you don't necessarily need to make a transfer) and safety (I had winks come on for Jota, many had others). Over X games is that better than having an extra 0.5m in your starting line up? Not sure of the answer, but I see the logic either way

Think the point is the first 5 GWs isn’t representative of the value of a good bench. When Pep roulette, Christmas schedule etc really kicks in that’s when you’ll see it.

I agree it made less sense to start the season with money on your bench.

The reason I’ve started well is having Salah and Haaland and as a result playing the likes of ESR and now Roger’s and not risking benching their points.

My bench has scored 5 points all season combined so far. Once I wildcard I’d likely have a stronger bench.

‘Benching headache’ is one of the most hilarious terms in FPL. It’s just so illogical. With how prices have been for years, playable benches are easy most of time without compromising the starting team much, if at all. so avoiding the headache is often just making a downgrade to avoid a decision. Like you’d rather have less points than occasionally get it wrong.

ESR has been my 1st sub the last two weeks after Rogers turned out to be really good. So I missed his 7 - the dreaded headache - but then got the 8 when Jota didn’t show up. Worth it.

There’s so many situations where it saves you having to make a kneejerk transfer due to short-term injury doubts, rotation and so on, I just don’t get why people self sabotage over this.

      Depends how you define nailed.

Nailed = will start every game when fit and only rested for league and fa cup. Something tells me that will only be VVD in the back four.

Nailed = very much first choice and will only ever not play when fit when Slot decides they really need a rest. So (80-90% starts) yes Robbo is nailed.

Only good option is Dalot, at 5.0 I think he put people off as the next two gameweeks they'll concede for sure...
If I could find 0.5m somewhere I would get him and have him on bench
Still 5.5 for Pedro is better I think (although that's another 0.5m)

This is why I don’t like GW6 wildcards. This is good but go and look at GW8-11 fixtures and ask if you really want triple Arsenal, double Liverpool, Chelsea and Bournemouth for those 4.

It’s why I’m hoping to WC GW13 and would wildcard in a squad close to what people want now, because that 8-11 run could be rough.

Fair enough - I’m just not clear on the value of the wildcard if you know there’s tough fixtures to navigate so short term.

City have by far the best outcoming fixtures, so I’d want at least a double up. Trouble is we still don’t know the best 11 which would make hold the wildcard.

    B Mbuemo (+3.0 ITB)
    C Diaz (+2.3 ITB)

I was considering B as could afford Havertz but can't afford him after Mbuemo price rise. So I'm still leaning towards A. What do you guys think?

Besides TAA and Gabriel I have currently Robinson and Lewis and no money/intention to upgrade them, at least yet. Lewis is attacking and I can wait to see if he gets easy games and Walker tough ones as I have expected. Robinson can cover him and Barco is not losing TV. MCI will get some clean sheets and Lewis attacking returns. He is like Porro, but million cheaper for me. Money is tight and I had a thing called life costing me two price rises this weekend. Annoying.

Arsenal and the media were bigging themselves up last week for coping without 2 midfielders for ONE game.

Rodri - twice the player Rice will ever be - is a big miss.

      1. Nightcrawler
        • 6 Years

Odegaard is an excellent player imo. Links ars mid to attack incredibly. Ars did well to cope without him. Rice definitely not in the same league as rodri can't see city coping without hin

He's a very very good player I agree. And they did cope well.
Point I'm making is Arsenal were saying this shows the depth of our squad. One game doesn't do that, but THIS is a big test for City.

Not without rodri they concede too many....theyve done well thus far but have come up against teams that have been pretty poor this season

          • 1 Year

It might just change how they play. At their best Pep was happy to just have Rodri holding and 2 of KDB/Foden/Bernardo as attacking mids (albeit with workrate).

He might just want 2 more defensive minded mids together a bit more often in the tougher games.
