West Ham shattered their club transfer record with the capture of Wolves’ winger Matt Jarvis, shelling out a reported £10.75 million on an uncapped player who suffered the bitter taste of relegation last season. Even so, Hammers boss Sam Allardyce was glowing from the prospect of plucking the flying winger from Molineux, heaping praise on the former Gillingham man and building the winger as a key attacking player for what could be another Premier League survival fight for Jarvis…

Certainly from an attacking sense he [Jarvis] is one of the best final-third crossers in the Premier League and his stats were very good at Wolverhampton Wanderers. He delivers at the business end of the field and creates a lot of chances. He is a player who can give opposition defences an awful lot of trouble and we are hoping he will produce that for us.

The Statistics

Allardyce loves a stat and, sure enough, Jarvis showed up well last season: only Bolton’s Martin Petrov attempting and succeeding with more crosses amongst the league’s midfielders, reinforcing Big Sam’s argument that he is getting a reliable supply from the flanks for his millions. Of course, the trick is to convert them – it has to be said that even with Steven Fletcher, a player who commanded a fee of £14 million from Sunderland last week, Wolves struggled to exploit Jarvis’ toil and tricky. Allardyce will be looking to the likes of Carlton Cole and Kevin Nolan, to cash in on the anticipated flood of chances from the fleet-footed winger.

Jarvis can produce himself. His returns last season were strong enough to warrant Fantasy attention, with eight goals and six assists in 37 starts, showing a marked improvement from his output in 2010/11 – four goals and eight assists.

Allardyce will likely expect and need more from Jarvis, particularly with the hefty price tag around his neck. He was given an instant debut at Swansea last weekend and troubled the Welsh side in the first half enough to suggest that he has the appetite to build on those numbers with Wolves.

The Prospects

In Fantasy terms, Jarvis’ prospects are dented by a price tag of 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – identical to that of Kevin Nolan, whereas in the Sky Sports game there is just a 0.1 difference in Jarvis’ favour. In both cases then, when our attention turns to West Ham’s midfield assets, it’s likely to be Nolan who attracts investment due to his raw goal potential, or even the cheaper Mark Noble with spot-kicks and set-pieces in his locker.

At this moment in time, the Hammers have an array of fixtures on the horizon which present Allardyce with the opportunity to build a platform for survival. With a 1-0 win over a disappointing Villa earned on the opening day, the Hammers take on Fulham at Upton Park this weekend and have Sunderland and Southampton at home to follow. Away trips to Norwich and QPR also provide potential, so interest in the West Ham squad could well peak in the coming weeks.

Jarvis will doubtless be a key figure should the Hammers flourish and exploit their kind match-ups, although it will likely be Nolan who, at least initially, tempts investment. Fantasy managers will need to see evidence that Jarvis is not only being given the opportunities to beat his man and deliver crosses, but also that West Ham are able to convert the opportunities he provides. A scattering of goal attempts would also be desirable if we are to consider Big Sam’s acquisition over the grizzled goal-getting power of Nolan.

Looking for a cheapie 4.0 defender. Will probably be a bench warmer, but would be nice to have someone who will still be playing in a few weeks. Maybe it’s not possible, but I'm looking at:
    - Guy Demel (WHM) – perhaps at risk from an incoming transfer?
    - George McCartney (WHM) – Didn't start the first game of the season, but came on after 20 mins. Played next game.
    - Nathan Baker (AVL) – is he only in due to injury?
    - Nathaniel Clyne (SOU) – don’t know much about him, other than he’s the guy who clashed with Augero when he twisted his knee recently!

Would really appreciate some advice! Leaning toward Clyne, but that's only because I don't know of a reason not to pick him ...

Thanks, I'm unlikely to get decent defensive returns on 4.0, so any potential going forward would be a lovely bonus. Is he a first choice for Reading?

Nice to find my post at the top of the page for a change, it's normally ends up bottom of the previous, lol!

I know you all love Michu and with all due respect... I have my concerns about him and i am going to tell all of ya anyway... Well i dont rate him as "Fantasy Gold" neither a "Good Player" yes i know he has scored 3 already but as much as they were neat finishes they were as lucky and as easy chances as well. Apart from these goals i haven't seen him creating chances or shooting on goal regularly. I rate Dyer above him as a player as well as a fantasy prospect for long term and i am on WC this week and have put Dyer instead of Luckychu.... Every bubble has to burst and yes their new record signing will also have am impact on his position as well ... so what you say ?

His past history says otherwise. Also, whoever plays in the 'Siggy' position has an advantage because of the clever runs Graham makes. He draws defenders away leaving more space for the guy in the hole. I expect Michu to be Siggy 2.0. Dyer is a class player though.

If we talk about signings, than you are talking about Pablo, who is a winger so he will make Dyer and Routledge rotation threats also Sinclair may still stay as well putting further dents on Dyers gametime.

In no way am expecting Michu to continue this run but the man was the leading goalscorer in La Liga so hes got to be doing something right. I see him finishing with 10 goals this season, and this behind the striker seems to be gold at Swansea as we saw with Siggy as well.

Ki won't play in Michu's position, normally plays deeper doesn't he?

Michu got 15 goals in La Liga playing for a poor side last season, no reason why he can't do just as well this season in the same role in a better side.

Dyer's goal record wasn't great last season and although he's started well, I think he's less likely to continue scoring than Michu.

But Dyer's record was mostly about wide positioning of him in Rodger's Style but in this system he is making forward runs without the ball all the time and cutting inside so he will def do better this season

Even if he stops scoring goals, he is very likely to still pick up a bucketload of assists throughout the season. If he was 8.0, maybe not worth it, but if you got him below 6.8, he's definitely worth the price.

I will respond as I just watched 90mins of swanseas games.

      Michu...

This guy I almost playing alongside Graham (a little deeper, but not much).

He could have had a hat trick v West Ham if graham had squared the ball off instead of taking a more difficult shots (x2).

Every goal he has got, he has taken well. Shown a 1v1 and outside box curler.

He is also a big lad, and should get fair share of headers ( I've no stats to back this up )

Swansea are playing very well, still passing lots but more end product and less one dimensional than they were under Rodgers.

Dyer and Routledge / Sinclair feed the top 2 by cutting in. More assits than goals, but laudrups slightly more attacking philosophy helps the semi-wingers profit more on the counter.

Given all the points, and Swansea flying start and good fixtures what's not to like about Michu.

And this isnt bandwagon or point chasing talk...

I was bored at work and playing around with Excel and came up with the attached charts showing Points vs. FPL ranking. Left chart for the top 70,000 and the right chart is for the top million. It lets you see how much you need to outscore people to move up positions. Feedback is welcome.

Is this a wildcard team? I wouldnt feel confident in Adebayor - AVB will rotate him with Defoe a lot and he is jarringly inconsistent anyway. Would Get Graham for Ade and Bale for Michu. Double Sunderland defence is a risky strategy but could work out well. Love the rest.

Cheers round. Yeah it is wildcard. I see your logic but not sure I agree about ade. Defoe's a bit crap in comparison especially as a single striker. Ade should be key again. Though graham and bale may be better.

Britton will likely lose his place to Ki and isn't a good FPL player in the first place. Think Spurs are getting a new keeper and Friedel is gonna be on the bench. For that money, get Vorm and Begovic combo, who rotate nicely. Rest looks OK if a little light in defence.

Those two coming along at the same time hindered the England team for years as manager after manager attempted to crowbar them both into the starting 11. Someone should have had the balls to choose between them but they never did.

Can't say for certain but seems a good chance the same thing would have happened at club level.

I'm goin for Nolan over Jarvis atm, more influence in and around the penalty box and a much bigger goal threat than Jarvis although Jarvis may be end up assisting him a few but the goals will fall at Nolan's feet.
