Many of the Fantasy Football Scout community were looking at a root and branch overhaul of their teams this week, as the shine from last month’s Wildcards quickly began to wear off and the cruel reality of injuries and shifting fixtures began to kick in. We look back on the discussion that ensued, whilst also pondering the player of the season to this point and the likely top target for the remaining Gameweeks of the campaign. As ever, we also find time to catch up on all the ups and downs in our community tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

Strikers were again under the spotlight this week, with Phaze 1 coming out in full support of Robin van Persie, despite his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag of £13.6m. His post entitled “Is RVP Worth It” acknowledges that the United frontman represents poor value financially but, he said, this is outweighed by his captaincy potential. Has today’s strike in the 2-2 draw with Fulham strengthened his case?

The Fantasy Freak was less optimistic about the prospects of City’s strikers. With their tough schedule, involving an FA Cup clash with Chelsea and a Champions League encounter with Barcelona, he predicted rotation up front from Manuel Pellegrini. Instead he urged people to consider Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge or Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke, among others.

Meanwhile, our midfields were the focus of Innsie’s post looking at some key differentials in the centre of the pitch. Chelsea’s Willian and Cardiff’s on loan United winger Wilfried Zaha were among his top picks discussed.

Another of Innsie’s midfield picks was Norwich’s Robert Snodgrass, who also caught the attention of our resident Sky Game expert d1sable. He argued that his underlying attacking stats demand our attention – although Snodgrass will need to return from the knock that saw him sit out the weekend’s draw with City to help d1sable’s case.

Defenders were far from neglected in this week’s chatter as we asked the community for their thoughts on best back lines over the coming Gameweeks. Yome came forward to stress how he’s avoiding Cardiff defenders, despite the Welsh side’s kind fixture run – a shrewd move given the latest showing at Swansea, He favoured the value of Tottenham’s Michael Dawson and Aston Villa’s Nathan Baker – he was certainly spot on with Dawson following today’s shutout. Elsewhere, Yes the Sess! was among those backing the rock-solid Chelsea defence and Southampton’s re-emerging rearguard.

West Ham’s Winston Reid was the only defender who made d1sable’s list of best Fantasy Football assets from now until the season climax. He predicts a particularly great final four months of the season for West Brom’s Chris Brunt and Manchester United’s Juan Mata.

Meanwhile, Captain Shirokov quizzed the community on their favourite player pick of the season. Santi Cazorla was his choice, having notched him four goals in two matches after transferring him in over Mersut Ozil. S.Kuqi opted for Adam Lallana and Deicide has selected Chelsea’s ever-reliable defender John Terry – ever-reliable until this weekend, of course.

We also took time out to canvas opinion on the approaching Gameweek 28 blank – how will you cope with the missing fixtures from City, United, Sunderland and, err…West Brom?

Finally, Jesus Navas – Our Lord rocked up with some superb analysis of Luis Suarez and his flat-track bully statistics. Essential reading for all those pondering the merits of the Uruguayan flavoured armband ahead of the trip to Fulham.

The Community Tournaments

The Uefa Council’s Champions League and Europe League tournaments got underway in Gameweek 24. Following the first set of fixtures ENR, Super Zlatan, Champ, Athletico Timbo, Torres Magic, The Shadow, Billy Ketsu and Giggs Boson topped the Champions League groups. Those in pole position in the Europa League groups were DonTheSpecial One, BBG, The Tinkerman, NEIL, Archie, Rate My Username, SW6, AK, Louis9618, Snake Juice, Home Run Baker and Beavis.

In HeelsOverHead’s Worst to First – 2 Million + Club, for teams with an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks, YOLO Toure was leading the way with an overall rank of 11,824. In addition, there were six teams in the top 100,000 following Gameweek 24.

Torres Magic topped his own Last Man Standing league in Gameweek 24 with a score of 77 but waved goodbye to 24 managers. Qubit (The Irregular) leads the After Xmas League and Unbelievable Bentek-kers heads the seeding for both the FPL Open and Elite 64. Full details of his leagues can be found here.

Going into Gameweek 25, that chap Jonty held on to his lead in the FFS Old Farts Club league, the FFS Moderators and Contributors league and the FPL part of the Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games. Gigging Order and In Like Flynn continue to top the Iron Man’s Sky Sports and Metro leagues respectively.

I’m still hanging to my lead in one of In Tommy We Trust’s AllThingsFPL leagues along with Bootsy, Billy Ketsu, Jambo17, Koneheads and Evs.

I have Sterling,Suarez and Sturridge. H2H rival's captain is Sturridge and he does not have Sterling or Suarez. Safe to say I should captain Sturridge and reap the rewards of the other two?

Although I would like Sturridge, I am not dismantling my team to get him in. His ownership is high and rising, and I would rather utilise best the differentials (what there are of them) until the end of the season.

    ...

    Boruc | Mannone

    Azpilicueta | Koscielny | Olsson | Ward | Chester

    Hazard | Yaya | Mata | Lallana | Noone

    RvP | Suárez | Rodriguez

    +1.5M

    ...

So I'm thinking of saving the transfer this week, and benching Koscielny since I have RvP and Mata. I wanted to sell for Cahill/Ivanovic but was advised against it due toa fairly easy few fixtures iover the next 3. After that I will look to sell him.

    Thoughts?

Who are some other "differential" captain options this week do you think?

Obviously Hazard will have attracted some suitors ... but what about the likes of Mirallas, Adebayor, Giroud .... or ....

    Baines??

    WC Planning

Those of us with our first Wildy still in tact, when do you plan on using it?

The viable options seem like being:

    A) GW31 - load up with 3 MUN & 3 MCY for their DGW

    B) Wait for future DGWs

RvP has 3 in 3. Yes, Sturridge has done better, but RvP is consistent and the main man. Suárez will be amongst the points too and there will be a run of Suárez scoring and Sturridge getting fewer points as he will be hungry for goals.

Negredo should still be pegged to start, which sort of kind of points to him. He's the best available City striker in terms of ability, but horrendously inconsistent and his returns have frankly been grim of late. Surely there are better options for the gameweek ahead.

Every week I see endless amounts of posts asking which player they should play
    A) Mirallas
    B) Eriksen

I thought I would finally put an end to this by coming up with a guide. Here it is...

The three factors that should influence who should start in your team are a-most important) form b) fixtures c) pick attacking players over defenders

Taking into account everyone can judge form and whether a player is a def/att I have decided to look at an updated version of fixtures and what should influence your decisions. I will look at both defensive fixtures and attacking fixtures.

Teams labelled 1- are in the best category, these are teams you want to vs
2- Are in the second best category- these teams offer favourable fixtures also
    3- So on
    4-
5-Are in the worst category- you don't not want to be against these opposition

Defense- which defenders should you pick?
1- Aston Villa, Norwich City, Hull City, Cardiff, West Ham-these teams are all defensive both home and away
2- WBA, Sunderland, Fulham, Palace, Stoke, Swansea
    3- Southampton, Newcastle, Everton, Tottenham
    4- Arsenal, Man United, Chelsea
5- Liverpool City (at all costs dont play defender's against these teams home or away)

Despite this teams can keep clean sheets against any team if they are in form, so if your are making a decision it is best to look at form- this is just a guide. You will notice the balance between categories is not even- that is because of the teams ability to score goals varies.

Attack- which attackers should you pick?
1- Fulham, Stoke, WBA, Cardiff, -all four of these teams have shambolic defenses away and home
2- Hull City, Sunderland, Aston Villa, Palace, Norwich City, Swansea, West Ham
    3- Everton, Liverpool, United
4- Arsenal, Tottenham (with vertoghen back), Southampton, Man City
    5- Chelsea

As you can see Chelsea is at top- Mourinho now has a full squad to pick from and therefore they are the best defensive sides. Tottenham and Southampton are both in based on the season stats. United and Pool drop because they continue to make errors and concede goals.

    A few Examples

Q: Should I Play Demel or Figueroa
A: Demel- norwich have a higher rank- so they are a more favourable fixture

    Q: Demel or Fabio
A: They play same ranked teams- so base your selection on form- pick demel.

So Cardiff are defensive home and away yet have a 'shambolic defense'? So you should play your Cardiff defenders even though they can't defend?

Solid choices = Lallana / Mirallas / Eriksen / Silva

      Punts = Adam / Nolan / Sterling / Gerrard

      Wildcards = Navas / Routledge / Sidwell / Dyer

Nolan, Lallana are other options. But I would go with BL and consider maybe riding out this week so you can get a 29er.

Blue Lion. Well, if you have 2 transfers then this frees you up a little. Test Eagles' list covers everyone. I'd be tempted with Lallana most out of that lot (but I already have him so may be a little biased).

Can a West Ham supporter or someone with knowledge tell me what the best way into the West Ham defence is? Reid would be the obvious choice but it's too risky atm with him not currently starting. Among the rest Collins looks like the best option as he is cheaper + more gaps potential than Demel but is he nailed on?

    C. AJ to Mirallas, save other transfer.

    D. AJ, Bruce and Bony to Mirallas, Reid and 9.4 forward (-4)
