After being substituted in the 53rd minute of Tottenham’s 2-0 victory over Liverpool last Sunday, Rafael Van der Vaart – who also scored the opening goal in the match – has confirmed that he is suffering with a stretched calf. The influential midfielder has stressed that he will do all he can and battle on to prove his fitness ahead of the final game of the season against Birmingham at White Hart Lane.

Connecting with fans through his official Twitter account, the Dutch international made the announcement:

“Stretched my calf a bit last Sunday against Liverpool but will do everything to make the last game of the season!”

Van der Vaart holds a very healthy Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership (27%) and, with his early withdrawal at Anfield, those managers – including 8 of the top 10 FPL – will have been anticipating an announcement. Today’s news will be met with a mixed reception however. While Van der Vaart seemingly has a chance of figuring in Sunday’s game, he could also miss out entirely or have his pitch time cut considerably once again.

Even though he has been considered a doubt since the victory at Anfield, media silence on Van der Vaart’s situation, together with his reputation this season, has seen him climb to fourth in our Captain’s Poll with 10% of the vote. A home clash against a faltering Birmingham offers potential profits and the Dutchman is understandably a leading contender for the armband. Van der Vaart has been in FPL staple for many a Manager this term, fetching a tally of 165 points which includes 13 goals and 9 assists.

For many this final gameweek could prove crucial and, with Van der Vaart holding such a prominent place in a high number squads, his situation over the coming days will need to be monitored carefully – the midfielder’s appearance on Sunday looks likely to have major significance to our fortunes as Fantasy Managers and those of Birmingham City. Check out our Twitter stream for all the latest.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

looking for a differential this week? What about Michael Owen?
I was going Drogba to Berba but now considering Carroll to Owen.
    Could work. 🙂

Drogba to Tevez, Carroll to Owen could work. At a guess I'd say Owen is likely to start, no reason to play 4-5-1 home to Blackpool.

Like it! Especially with a 59 pt lead!

I'm defending a 16 point lead (was a 16 point deficit before this week), got a feeling the Berba or Tevez choice will be decisive.

I have all day Saturday to contemplate my moves? Brilliant.

Living in the states and having to make my moves, usually whilst drunk, at midnight on Fri evening is a glitch most don't have to deal with. Difficult to get up at 4 am on a Saturday to set line-up and check news/info.

I seem to have no trouble having 3 pints before noon thoguh

Ok this will definitely be my last post, dont want to try and type after Ive had a few tonight. it is UNFAIR that some people get lucky in life and in fpl, it isnt fair so if I even the playing field so what? you could argue that going on here is cheating. he should have been more sensible with his password, he could even have put a few numbers after it ffs. he went to a posh school, got amazing grades and did medicine, I went to a comp and I didnt have mummy and daddy paying my way and ended up doing a sh!t job after uni

and it doesnt matter to him, but it DOES matter to me. he might not care when his up to his nuts in his ridiculously fit wife(knowing how everything else has gone his way he's probably got a whopper) when I go home most nights for a ready meal and a tug, so I need every victory I can get.

Lol. But will it feel like victory? Won't there be a nagging voice inside you saying "You cheated, you cheated". How will the rest of the people in the league feel when they realised you altered his team? Are they going to pat you on the back and say 'Well done'? Or are they going to look down at you and wonder how anybody could be so pathetic?

You don't welch on a bet and you don't f''k with a man's fantasy football team.

The % of people chosen to go to Oxford from Private schools with same grades as common people dissagrees with this

Saying that , life isnt merely luck .You have to work to achieve (with the exception of a few etons). And even coming from a poor disadvantaged background you can still "make it" if you put the work in. Although yes it will be harder.

As Will Smith said "talent you have naturally , it only gets so far, to become great at something you have to beat on your craft everyday of your life"

SO maxi no its not all luck. Far from it. So quit moaning and if you want something work for it.

I think the argument is that it is not a disadvantage to be born posh and so you do not compound years of ill treatment they've received at the hands of others when you attack them.

This is why it is acceptable, for instance, to be rude about the Welsh but not Jewish people or black people.

I'm paraphrasing an argument made by AA Gill when he was taken to task for alleged "racism" against the Welsh.

Had a monster week against my rival (thank you N’Zogbia, Ba & Adam) and turned a 24 point deficit into a 14 point lead. First time I’ve led the league all season and now I just need to hang on to it!

    MY TEAM:
    Foster (Begovic)
    Huth Kolarov Coleman (RJ, Luiz)
    Silva VDV Adam N’Zogbia (Lampard)
    Odem Ba RVP

Rivals’ main differentials: Kuyt, Suarez, Baines, Yaya, Enrique

I’m not going to take a hit unless he does, should I use my transfer(s) to cover a differential or just go for Odem/Ba > Berba?

cover, berba is one of those 50/50's that could be risky or pay off big time. i doubt he'll do that much though w/out the normal supporting cast. i honestly think blackpool might nab a pt. on sunday as saf will play his reserves and likes holloway.

    Couple of probs this week….

Firstly my back line is non-existent – Luiz, Lolarov, Kelly, Baines, Walker

Do I waste a transfer trying to field a back line or do I concentrate on attack in order to make up the 15 points to catch the leader in my mini league

    Next problem….

The leader in my league (my brother) i’m pretty sure will bring in Tevez and possibly Berbaflop too….Can i realistically not bring in Tevez for the final game, bearing in mind I’ll have a reasonable amount of differentials elsewhere (see below)

    My Team
    Foster
    Luiz, Baines, Walker (Kolorov, Kelly)
    Nani, Adam, N’Zogbia, Lampard, Yaya
    RVP, Sturridge (Hoilett)

    His Team
    Hart
    Luiz, Coleman, Hangeland, Huth, Kelly
    Silva, VDV, Modric, Downing, Gardner
    Rooney, RVP, Zamora

    Finally, who to captain???

Your back line is no worse than your rivals. You have Baines (home, pens), Walker (home, assists) and Kolarov (likely start). Luiz may even start given the shambolic Chelsea defence against Toon, and Ancelotti may rotate.

You have to gamble on firepower. Rooney will not start so your rival has the cash to bring in Tevez.

Everton vs. Chelsea could be tight, and Nani is not a nailed on starter. You need to find points to bring in heavy hitters from the games which actually mean something.

Also, wait if you can until the last minute and watch how many changes your rival makes if you can. Try only to give at most 4pts on your rival. If he does 1 change, you do 2 max etc.

      Just my thoughts.

Messi does not play on the wing. He plays in centre forward or deep lying space in front of midfield.

It will be one of Vidic and Rio marking him, and Carrick when he comes into midfield.

I dont know why people keep mentioning fullbacks.

Or take Owen and Obertan out, SAF knows he doesn't owe them s*$t, besides he won't let those tools steal Berbatov's shine. I think it will look almost exactly like:

        http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/football/champions-league/2010-2011/manchester-united-schalke-04-384269.html

minus O'Shea of course. Notice how SAF has Valencia and Nani bracketed around Berbs for maximum service. Little did he know that this would open the garage door for Anderson.

Not sure where I stand on the Nani debate here. He will presumably be used at some stage in the final, no? And so Fergie may not want to risk him.

I guess the same could apply to Berbatov, but he hasn't started in ages and needs the football. Nani played last week.

Darren Fletcher will get a run out v Blackpool - Fergie is keen as mustard to get in him somehow for that Final.

Saying that, even appreciable minutes against Blackpool will not give him sufficient match fitness to play 90 minutes (possibly more) v Barcleona.

Nani will be involved in the squad and the game at some point.

No point risking him in a meaningless game.

Berbatov will prob not be needed on CL final for long periods and is after the top scorer prize

I see no need for Fergie to risk Nani in a meaningless game before the most important of the season.

United could easily we go 4 5 1, drop Hernandez and play all 3 of Nani, Valencia and Park.
Point being Nani will be heavily involved.

Aye - you are a tough man to catch. Well done on the H2H4 League win...

You are 124th in the world, one decent captain shout could propel you into the top 100. Saying that all three mentioned look, on paper, decent propsects for double figure scores. But who do you captain?

I say go for it - I'm thinking of an 8 point hit myself. City's away form would slightly worry me, so I'd edge towards Berbs as captain. His best scores have been at home to lesser teams (mostly), Blackburn being a good example!

Indeed. It's basically license to back a whole number of United players for first scorer. United would do incredibly well to not lose if it's Barca who score first.....

Think I'll be betting on Messi/Villa/Rooney/Hernandez FGS and then some correct score/scorecast shots too.

End of season blowout on some of my Ubecha winnings ...some kind of excuse if (when) it doth fail.

It's statistically -I'm completely assuming, but given the likelihood of a Barca win it must be...- too good not to. I'm sure there's probably a way to minimise losses somehow too.

Yup, even Paddy Power themselves have a Barca win in 90 minutes as a 50% chance, so definitely worth trying to exploit the offer.

Why would Wolves and Blackburn settle for a draw? Looking at the table a point could possibly send both of them down and 0 points would do the exact same thing. 1 or 0 points are essentially the same. Both need 3 points, screw all that suggested betting on a draw.

    My defence for the gw.
    Bego(foster)
    Huth,djourou,luiz,rj,Simpson.

Looks poor I know(be lucky to get 3 out)
Already got a 4 pointer lined up, but if I did make it a 8 pointer, would Dawson be top of the list?
    Cheers for any insight.

Dawson's annoying, Spurs always seem to concede in the easy games. He got 2 points in the first 3 weeks I played him, all at home to bottom half teams, and then popped up last week with 9 points at Anfield! I'm sure that having Ledley King back made a massive difference, but who knows whether he'll also play this week....

What about Ryan Taylor at Newcastle? Could have had a goal last week, and West Brom's players must be looking at their travel brochures on the way to St James' Park.

Yup, he's always a good shout if he plays, but will he play though? Are Tiote and Nolan still out?

Normally a hit for defender is no go but with probably only 2 starting, hmm.. I'm gonna say f*ck it, don't bother, if only 2 play then so be it. Look at last weeks cleanies, Spurs @ Liverpool, WBA actually keeping one! It's too hard to predict! If u had to go for one I'd say one with attacking threat, Hangeland against that Arsenal defense would tempt me!

Pretty much the same here, I have Silva and VdV anyway.

I'd get rid of Nasri out of those though obviously as he is 100% out isn't he? I think Silva and VdV will play. Maybe get rid of Nasri for N'Zog or Walcott? Not many options tbh.

Nasri...he's hurt and will not probably play...or VDV who is struggling in form and is nursing a calf knock.

Ok all, here is my final week's squad, lemme know what you think:

    --------------Al'Habsi------------
    -------Cahill--Luiz--Hangeland-----------
    Sessegnon--Kuyt--Lampard--N'Zogbia
    -------Suarez-Berbatov(c)-Tevez---------

may even toss Anderson in the mix if I hear enough factual evidence.
