We shift our World Cup attentions onto Ghana, now, with the second article focussing on the Group G contenders. First up for Kwasi Appiah’s troops is a showdown with USA on Monday June 16 at 11pm before they face a couple of very tough tasks, going up against Germany five days later at 8pm and taking on Portugal at 5pm on Thursday June 26:

Road to Qualification

Ghana’s campaign was boosted after a number of players – including Michael Essien, Kevin Prince-Boateng and Andre Ayew – chose to end their international exiles and returned to first-team duties. Placed in a four-team group along with Zambia, Sudan and Lesotho, they won five of their six fixtures, scoring 17 times and conceding on only three occasions. Handed a two-legged play-off against Egypt, they served up a stunning 6-1 home win before losing the subsequent away game 2-1 to clinch their place in this month’s tournament.

Most Starts Sulley Muntari, Kwadwo Asamoah, Harrison Afful (7), Fatau Dauda, Asamoah Gyan, John Boye (6), Abdul Majeed Waris, Samuel Inkoom, Mohammed Rabiu (4)

Most Goals Asamoah Gyan (6), Sulley Muntari, Abdul Majeed Waris (3)

The Key Targets

Since qualifying for the World Cup, Ghana have struggled badly for goals. Over nine fixtures (three friendlies and six African Nations Championship matches) Appiah’s side have scored just five times and have never netted more than once – indeed, they have failed to notch in each of the last four, with their most recent games including 1-0 defeats against Montenegro and Holland. On the positive side, they conceded just three times across those fixtures and have proven obstinate opponents to break down.

Ghana operate with a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Daniel Opare and Harrison Afful pushing forward from right-back and left-back respectively. The former’s displays for Standard Liege have earned him a transfer to Porto this summer and he comes in at 4.8 in FantasyiTeam to Afful’s 4.9 – the pair’s attacking tendencies may have to be curtailed in the final couple of fixtures, though, with Appiah perhaps set to sit deeper and play on the counter instead.

At centre-half, John Boye and Jon Mensah looks the most obvious options though recent reports suggest Appiah is thinking of moving Michael Essien into the heart of the back-four, perhaps placing question marks over Boye’s game time, in particular. Certainly, given the calibre of opponents, their backline should be rewarded by those Fantasy games that favourably look upon defensive actions, though clean sheets may be hard to come by.

If Essien remains in the double-pivot, though, he’ll be partnered by Sulley Muntari. The Milan man (5.2 in FantasyiTeam) fired three goals during the qualifiers and is on spot-kicks for his country, as evidenced by his converted penalty against Egypt– a factor that may count in his favour when considering our options further up the field. Similar to the defenders, the two defensive midfielders are expected to be busy in the last couple of matches and could still be worth considering for certain Fantasy games. Indeed, to a lesser extent, the same can be applied to the wide men, Andre Ayew and Kwadwo Asamoah – whilst neither can be regarded as prolific, scoring one goal between them during qualifying, their stamina and work-rate have been hallmarks of their recent displays for Marseille and Milan respectively. The latter pair are also reasonably priced in FantasyiTeam, coming in at 5.1 and 5.3.

Former Sunderland man Asamoah Gyan was top scorer in qualifying – his six goals were double the number of any team-mate. Now plying his trade in the United Arab Emirates with Al Ain, his pace and strength up top keeps him ahead of any competition for the lone forward role. Tucked in behind, Kevin Prince-Boateng is the favourite to be handed the role in “the hole”. He was a pivotal figure in Schalke’s third placed Bundesliga finish last term and, despite being fielded in a more withdrawn position, found the net on six occasions. Like Gyan, Boateng is listed as a forward in FantasyiTeam and is the dearest of the two, at 7.4 to 7.2.

The Long Shots

Abdul Majeed Waris offers an alternative to Prince-Boateng for the role behind Gyan. The Spartak Moscow youngster notched nine goals in 16 starts on loan to French side Valenciennes in 2013/14 and was just as impressive during the qualifiers, scoring in three of his four appearances – classified as a forward, he comes in at 6.7 in FantasyiTeam

The pace and trickery of Christian Atsu could be an ideal commodity during the later stages of matches. Farmed out on loan from Chelsea to Vitesse Arnhem last term, the youngster registered five goals and six assists – he sets you back 5.2 in FantasyiTeam.

Ozil was fantastic in qualifying, ending as the German top scorer and top assister!

But he's been poor for Arsenal recently and was poor in the Germany against Cameroon.

So what can we expect in Brazil? He's such a key player for Germany and if they are to be successful he HAS to return to his form that labelled him as the best no10 in the world.

Can we rely on him to perform, do you expect him to rise up for the World Cup?

Personally if I was the German coach I'd drop him...

Don't think that will happen though, despite his struggles for Arsenal, as you say his record in qualifying is second to none.

He could well come good, people have talked about the slower pace suiting him more.

Good point on the slower pace, that could really help him. I don't see any European team coming close to winning it though and that includes Germany and Spain, I think the conditions will get to them in the end.

Disagree on that front, I think the conditions have been over-exaggerated.

Most of the knockout games are in the SE of the country, and is Rio or Sao Paulo much different from the south of Spain or Italy in terms of weather conditions, I'm not convinced it is.

You may be right but I guess it depends on the location. I did a little research as even though I am not playing wc ff I will have a big interest in the tournament from a football pov.

Semi final - Belo Horizonte: Temp 26 deg (avg high), Humidity 71% (pretty ok)
Semi final - Sao Paulo: Temp 22 deg (avg high), Humidity 78% (tough)

Final - Rio De Janeiro: Temp 37 deg (avg high), Humidity 79% ( 😯 )

Malaga (south Spain): Temp 30 deg, Humidity 73%
            Rome : Temp 28 deg, Humidity 70%

From the looks of above the humidity does look to be higher over there if only marginally but even then the Spanish and Italians don't play football in this type of weather often and this is the lowest it gets in Brazil as it is their winter so the South American players are obviously going to be able to deal with it better imo

You also have the time difference to contend with and the whole circadian rhythm etc so all in all I just can't see the European teams doing as well this time. It was different in Asia and Africa as the South American teams were not playing at home (stating the obvious) but I think the home advantage to a developed football continent like SA cannot be overestimated.

Rio De Janeiro's average high in July is 25.6ºC with ~75% humidity, that's not hot at all. Neither is 78% humidity when the temperature is 22ºC.

Yes, places like Manaus will be hot and humid, but I think this climate thing is vastly overstated. It's winter and most of the venues are not in equatorial/tropical climes.

No point looking at the average temp you need to get the average day time high temp as it is obviously cooler at night. Avg day time high in Rio in july was as per my post above with 79% humidity and while I don't know a whole lot about humidity etc that sounds ridiculously tough to play in to me.

That's exactly what I stated...the average maximum temperature in rio during July. What you're stating is nonsense as the highest temperature ever recorded in rio in July is 36, so how can the average be 37?

Sorry berbilly I don't know what website I was using for my info and can't find it again but it does appear that it is wrong alright.

I checked the temp on 13th July for since 2008 and the afternoon temp seems to range from 24deg to 31deg with a feel of 26deg to 41deg. The humidity doesn't seem to be that bad at this time though at around 70% compared to up to 90% at night. (Agrees with your data)

I think the conditions will have a major bearing on the tournament as most European teams don't play in these kind of conditions throughout their league season.

                    We'll see though I guess

No worries, I think the conditions will be somewhat similar to a european summer day, so yeah the fact that they don't play during the summer could negatively impact them.

Although there is a fair chunk of the South American players who play in Europe so who's to say they won't be the same although they did grow up in those conditions.

We shall see though during the WC for sure.

I doubt it, he looks mentally and physically fatigued by his season in the epl and while physical fatigue can be overcome with a bit of rest I think the mental fatigue would take a good 2/3 months away from full pressure football to overcome properly.

The McDonalds game is a shambles at the moment. They've cocked up the recovered balls rule, and we'll only have a couple of days to pick a team.

It would infuriate me to play against players who are buying extra transfers so I've opted out of that one.

I'll sign up. I wasn't going to play fantasy World Cup, but Fox's system seems clear and straight forward. I've been playing Fox Sport Fantasy Super Rugby and this set up for the World Cup is identical. It has worked well for the rugby.

One thing though - The player News section has NEVER been updated for the rugby. Even players injured in GW1 and out for the season, have never been noted.
So if you're making transfers, don't rely on the game letting you know.

          Thanks for the info...

The good thing about FFS though is that there's always someone around to tell you who's injured so that shouldn't be a problem...

That's true Zepinho, tons of info on here.

I work in South Korea, and have been watching the Aussie Rules games this season (only 1 hour time difference). Suddenly I have a WC team to prepare! Luckily this is a 3-day weekend over here, so time for catch-up reading lol.

A cursory glance has made me think this is the best option out there - I'm in.

May reluctantly have to drop the FiT game as there are several key deadlines I know I'm unable to make transfers for. I'm playing the McDonald's game only for the UEFA team game - if that changes to the Fox game it will be my only vice this summer.

    ******THOMASS PRESS CONFERENCE******

Thomass: Do you want to make an announcement? (*laughs*) No it's been mare at this stage ones another (laughs again). Ermm, I guess the squad for this tournament. We have announced 5 players who we think can do the job when the tournament starts. I want too see the conditions this week to what way I want the team to play. We have selected those 5 to give ourselves the best chance of winning this for the World Cup game against the Netherlands. I am extremely proud to lead the lads out on June 12.

Reporter: Thomass it's hard to over shadow a World Cup game to start the group well. What impact will Babyyy's announcement have on the team do you think and how positive will it be for you?

Thomass: Emm, I think it will only give us more inspiration no doubt about it as Babyyyy said. The World Cup is the thing you look forward to as a player. The announcement about Babyyy will give us more inspiration than ever and try win our next game.

Reporter: It must have been a tough decision to leave out those who didn't get pick?

Thomass: Yeah really tough decision as they both performed especially AZ who trained remarkably well but we need to do what's best for the team, as I've said that whole time it's about selecting the best 5 players to win games for us at the World Cup in these conditions and against the opposition your playing against and we feel we have a rally good stock with the experience guys in the squad of 5, so I think we are in pretty good hands and we know we have to perform to win these games.

Reporter: Did you have a feeling about Baby since what happened last week and how did the boys respond to when he told them?

Thomass: I didn't have a feeling that I was coming and Baby spoke to me after a training session last October, yeah and made his decision. Yeah the boys are obviously hurting because he has been an amazing player for a long time (*breaks down in tears*). That will do me for today.

Reporter: News on Matt? Is he a good signing?

Thomass: (*laughs rapidly*) yeah it's a great signing for us he's a great player and I'm glad we've found a replacement so quickly for a wonderful player and Matt certainly fits the bill. Matt is fit and raring to go.

Reporter: You talked about it being a big tournament, will it change the mindset of the players, do you expect them to rise to the occasion?

Thomass: I think it's a every tournament or every big game you play in. I think it's so special because this tournament only comes once after 4 years and it's the pinnacle, not every time In your career you get the chance to represent your country at the World Cup. I don't think there is pressure on us we can just go there and play with freedom and confidence. We can go there with freedom and confidence if we do what we've done in previous tournament.

Reporter: Do you think Spain will do well at the tournament? People have said Spain play boring football.

Thomass: Ermm that's not true I think the group we have there Is no reason why we can't do well as I've said the lads can just go there and express themselves and the Spanish don't play boring football! We thrive to be the best we can be.

    Thomass: Thanks

Enjoy reading it 😀 it's worth a read!

Im planning on doing a sweepstake for the World Cup and wanted to do a live video draw before the first game at 7.30pm on 12th.

Does anyone know the best way of doing this for free? so that people can log in and view or watch at a later date if they want?

I am not too techy so something simple would be a bonus!

Any advice? how does the scoutcast work? Is that a good way to go? I havent watched one yet so not sure.

Where to start. Firstly Ajax are a top European club, and just because they play in the Eredividie doesn't make them shit. Janmaat for example is a really good player, up there with most RBs for me

Veratti, De Rossi, Motta, and Candreva all appear to be options right now. My guess is De Rossi, because he offers more defensively then any other option.

So long that the McDonald's game doesn't launch on the 8th June with 1 point per recovered ball, I would assume we would go with it for continuity. We went with it in Euro 2012 and though I didn't play in that tournament (blurring the lines between fantasy and real life here) I see it was used for World Cup 2010 too.

If they do launch with that I'm sure we will reconsider, hahaha.

Also, it may be worth noting that I don't see any manual substitutions in the Fox Sports game rules, which are a big part of strategy. (http://worldcupfantasy.foxsports.com.au/rules/)

Yup, the Fox game is an absolute copy/paste of the classic FPL game with the (personal opinion here) improved 'man in the stand' bonus system.

Cool. I never played FPL when they used that system, so I can only wonder... but there certainly have been a few times this season when the man of the match was perfectly obvious to everyone but the computer.

                1) Did Charlie Adam play?
                2) If yes award 3 Bonus points
                3) If No, did Barry Ferguson play?
                4) If yes award 3 bonus points
                5) If no return to step 1

I think the irony is that imo BPS is a definite improvement on PPI. And they actually delivered what people were asking for, which was that bonus rewarded things that the points didn't, instead of just being a dollop of points on top of points.

The points are much more evenly distributed between positions too now.

The main problem is that BPS scores are too low so bonus is often given to a ridiculous number of people. I think the suggestion, it might have been Granville's, that there is a minimum BPS score to get bonus might have some merit.

I'm not a big bonus system hater anyway but you're right - that would help, or even a sort of fixed banding system - any player scoring between 10-15 BPS gets 1 bonus, 16-20 gets 2 bonus and 20+ gets 3 bonus.

A terrible 0-0 might see no bonus awarded whilst a more interesting game might get plenty of bonus.

Probably a massively flawed idea but something of that way of thinking would be a bit of a further step in the right direction.

Yeah it doesn't quite feel right that 0-0 draws can give out far more points (ie. virtually the entire backline of both teams) than thrillers.

That said, the boring clean sheet is one of the unsung glories of FPL...

Akinfeev + Kompany or Courtois + Mertesacker? Is Mertesacker a risk that he wont play every game?

Suggesting that hardwork is a hallmark of any Milan players performance is just silly 😉

Obviously i'm a good hour or so late for this discussion, but Diego Costa at Chelsea is a massive fantasy prospect.

Do we think he could have the same sort of impact as Drogba did in his pomp?

I will wait and see how he performs in the world cup and pre season. He might need time to gel.

So if he has a storming WC you think that'll spill into the Premier League?

I'm more concerned with Mourinho's philosophy (which i can't see will change a whole lot).

Such a high profile player will surely command top dollar too...

What i meant is with all the recent injuries Costa might be struggling. This plus a poor preseason would definitely be a signal ton not pick him right away.

Drogba goalscoring record wasn't great bar one season, under Ancelotti, not Mourinho.

not really the point of the post, but even so, Drogba in his pomp (i.e. at his best) was a superb player and a regular match winner.

What do you think about D. Costa?

Torres, Ba and Eto'o were not exactly terrible strikers before they went to Chelsea. Is Mourinho the major factor or do you think Costa has it in him to make and take chances regularly?

My point is that a Chelsea striker will never be a good FPL option under Mourinho.

His team is set up for the striker to hold the ball up and run into the channels, bringing the on-running midfield players into play more often.

Even Drogba, who I agree was a superb player, didn't have a great goalscoring record under Mourinho, and whilst Costa looks to be a better fit than Torres is, I can't see him scoring enough goals to be a rival to Aguero/Suarez/Rooney/RVP/Sturridge etc. in FPL terms even if he starts every week (which I don't think he will especially if Torres stays).

I completely agree, those players you mention may not necessarily be better strikers than Costa, but the team ethos makes them stand out as better options and i imagine will come at a similar price.

Huge measure of the player though. I expect there will be a lot of investment in him from 'casuals' so you can bet your bollocks to a barn dance that he'll score a hat trick in GW1

Don't have any stats or huge essays to back this up but I'm thinking he's a bit of a waste of money.
Good goal record this year obviously but I don't think he'll come close to replicating this season at Chelsea.

I think his reputation and recent record make him a big prospect if Chelsea are going for the title, but like you say, Mourinho could well stifle his progress as a goal scorer

Hi everyone, just a quick question, IF Chelsea do end up signing Costa, do you think he would take pens, or would Hazard keep them? Costa didnt have the best conversion rate for pens at Atleti, so I was thinking maybe Hazard would edge it?

      Cheers 🙂

Yeah, Id have thought so too mate. I love the way players like Yaya, Hazard and Balotelli take penalties, just wait til the keeper commits and then roll it in the other side of the net, make it look so effortless but it must take so much courage and skill 🙂
