Next up in our Group H assessment is Belgium. Regarded as one of the dark horses for the tournament, Marc Wilmots’ side will be hoping to live up to their billing and qualify from what looks a relatively straightforward first three fixtures. Up first is a showdown with underdogs Algeria on Tuesday June 17 at 5pm before the Belgians square up to Russia five days later at 5pm followed by a game against South Korea on Thursday June 26 at 9pm:

Road to Qualification

The Belgians eased through qualifying, finishing nine points ahead of any other team in a group that also contained Croatia, Serbia, Scotland, Wales and Macedonia. Winning eight and drawing two of their 10 fixtures, Wilmots’ side scored 18 times (though managed more than two goals on just one occasion) and conceded four times, with six clean sheets accrued.

Most Starts Thibaut Courtois, Axel Witsel (10) Jan Vertonghen (9), Kevin de Bruyne, Toby Alderweireld (8), Thomas Vermaelen, Christian Benteke, Moussa Dembele (7), Vincent Kompany, Eden Hazard (6)

Most Goals Kevin de Bruyne (4), Vincent Kompany, Kevin Mirallas, Christian Benteke, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku (2)

Most Assists Kevin de Bruyne (4),Dries Mertens, Jan Vertonghen (2)

The Key Targets

Since qualifying for Brazil 2014, the Belgians stumbled in a couple of friendlies before recently finding their form. Back-to-back defeats against Colombia and Japan weren’t helped by a lack of domestic game time for de Bruyne before a winter move from Chelsea to Wolfsburg boosted his match sharpness. A draw with Ivory Coast in March preceded wins over Luxembourg (5-1) and Sweden (2-0) over the past week or so, with the in-form Romelu Lukaku showing he’s a more than able deputy for the stricken Christian Benteke, with four goals in those two matches, whilst de Bruyne chipped in with a goal and a couple of assists.

Thibaut Courtois – at 5.9 in FantasyiTeam – is nailed-on between the sticks and once again excelled on loan at Atletico Madrid last term, though with two goals to his name over the qualifying period, skipper Vincent Kompany may be the backline option of choice for Fantasy managers. Kompany is the priciest option at the back, though, and comes in at 6.2 in FantasyiTeam. Either Thomas Vermaelen or Daniel Van Buyten (who has scored 10 goals at international level) will partner the City captain in the heart of defence and, whilst Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen (5.8 and 6.0 in FantasyiTeam) look to have the full-back berths sewn up, both are natural centre-backs and could face a tough time in the conditions against pacy wide men. Alderweireld started just 10 league games for Atletico Madrid in 2013/14 and Vertonghen struggled with a calf injury towards the latter part of the previous campaign, suggesting they may both be a little short in match sharpness. Similarly, neither Vermaelen or Van Buyten were regulars at Arsenal and Bayern last time around, whilst Kompany missed 10 league games through injury for City – with one clean sheet in their last seven matches, some may even decide to overlook the Belgian defence altogether.

Axel Witsel is Wilmots’ preferred option in the deep-lying central midfield role. He’s the only outfield player to start every qualifying match and whilst his consistency of game time is unparalleled, he’s unlikely to bring home attacking points – games which reward defensive contributions should heighten his appeal. Elsewhere in the middle of the park, Marouane Fellaini, Nacer Chadli and Moussa Dembele will vie for the two remaining positions in front of Witsel, though not one of the three have impressed domestically heading into the tournament. Given that both Fellaini and Chadli started five qualifiers and Dembele seven, it seems there’s little between them in Wilmots’ thoughts, suggesting we would be best to look for more definite contenders.

Luckily, Kevin de Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku all look viable options. After appearing from the bench in the first couple of qualifiers, de Bruyne started the subsequent eight but despite scoring twice the number of goals (four) and assists (four) than any Belgian player, he remains very reasonably priced in FantasyiTeam at just 5.9 compared to Hazard’s 7.5. The latter looks to have penalties to boost his appeal but his former Chelsea team-mate could be the wisest pick. As mentioned above, Lukaku has thrived in recent friendlies and looks a real in-form option for those thinking of doubling up on Wilmots’ side, with de Bruyne set to find his way into many teams. Coming in at 9.1 in FantasyiTeam, we’ll be hoping he improves upon the inconsistency that blighted some of his Fantasy returns at Everton.

The Long Shots

Whilst the front three looks nailed-on, Wilmots has some intriguing options to call upon off the bench. Both Kevin Mirallas and Adnan Januzaj offer alternatives on the flanks – the direct running and eye for goal of the Everton man, allied with Januzaj’s trickery and ability to put the opposition on the back foot, both look strong back-up options for the Belgians to call on midway through the second-half. Mirallas was utilised as a sub four times in qualifying and netted on two of those occasions – in the searing conditions, his fresh pair of legs off the bench could still pick up the points. You can snap them up in FantasyiTeam for 6.3 and 5.3 respectively.

The issue with the recovered ball thing is that these are the stats on the fifa website. What did they use in the game then?

I completely agree that they will use some other method which makes the stats lower but then why is this on their website?

Any game which causes so much uncertainty isn't worth playing in my opinion - contradictory information all from the same source is a real problem.

Its rather annoying. In the end the top guy will get a max of 2 rb's per game though. Where they get the stat from is anyones guess though...

they should keep it simple with goals/assists/clean sheets etc. recovered balls etc is too much.

im thinking because there are only 7 gameweeks in total, to really succeed you probably have to have some decent differentials right form the start. hazard only has 7 international goals in his career, 2 vs macedonia and 1 vs kazakhstan

Though I could upgrade my Belgium defender, Vertonghen, to an other defender now, say a French defender and go double up on France defense.

It dosn't seem like the guy who wrote this article have much faith in Belgium defense?

The Bangladesh point was basically a point saying you cant provide tv for everyone, and pauing fir the bbc isnt relevant.

It shouldnt be equality for equality sake, it should just be the quality of the football.

I wouldnt expect to see a rubbish English tennis player televised just to be equal with Scotland because Murray is Scottish, Murray is televised because he is better.

I disagree, I think it works well to provide archived news on the day in which they are broadcasting the game.

If you didn't like this small portion being added to the gossip column then you really won't like the BBC running a live service simultaneously with the coverage of the 1990 semi-final.

    Hola amigas!

Just an update from the FFS World Cup panel, which comprises the hosts of all 8 groups.

We had a vote yesterday on whether we should stick to mcD or consider a switch. And there happened to be unanimous agreement that we should simply stick, for various reasons. There wasn't even a single vote for switching.

Thought I'd give you an update. So nothing stops you geezers from ordering some fries tomorrow once McD is open.

Thank you and back to the Mexican rehab camp for now.

We'll have to see if Fox is actually better. Just a replica of FPL and not really mainstream yet (as a large chunk not playing).

We know McD is mainstream (official) and almost everyone's playing it. We also dug into scores from 2010 WC and the rules haven't really changed since. Seemed to work alright back then. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed it and reckon it will again be a refreshing change from FPL.

Another thought occured to me for future. Instead of the solo iron man competitions you can have team iron man comps.

Take four competitions, each player plays a different type of competition for his team. Every week the scores are adjusted such that each gametype contributes the same total across all teams as the other gametypes.

So if A1 got 90pts in Sky, B1 got 180pts in Sky and C1 got 45pts in Sky, their scores are adjusted to 56pts, 28pts and 14pts.

And A2 got 10pts in FPL, B2 got 30pts in FPL and C2 got 10pts in FPL. Their scores are adjusted to 20pts, 60pts and 20pts.

Etc etc. This way no gametype is more important.

Since most teams are a guessing game on who will play and the rest of the teams spread their goals evenly between players i am actually contemplating stupidity.... That is a front 3 made up on Hulk, Neymar and Fred.... How stupid is this?

I might be, depending on price. If Hazard is 11.0, and Fab is 9.5, then worth a punt surely?

I see him pairing up with Matic in the holding roles though...

Ramsey is my main must-have mid at present though. Nasri as well hopefully represents City cover and good value.

We have so many options for our attacks from United/Pool/City/Arsenal etc, there is bound to be a more productive place to spend the big money.

I'll be having only one Chelsea defender though because I like to go cheap at the back.

Mustafi (a defender, and not a great one in place of that) nominated in place of Reus. That's just bizarre given their lack of striking options. It should have been Volland.

If Löw doesn't get Germany to the semi-finals, I think he's gone. The knives were sharpening at the last tournament and he's not helped himself at all.

'Too concerned with wrong-footing the opposition with his squad & team selection, not concerned enough with developing a winning mentality' is the accusation. I agree with the first part, but not the second.

"Trev, 4vets & Hunter have already won one of the UEFA FFS competition ICC Champions Trophy as part of Pakistan team. With Gnu included, they represented as a team once again in Beach soccer tournament last season. Obviously I'm proud to join such a stable team which gives great importance to human relations. Ergh, hungover. http://www.howlatthemoon.com/dueling_piano_bar/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/hungover-working.gif

How bad did is the Reus injury? I really like Podolski, I think Wenger under-uses him at Arsenal. His goals per minute record is great for Arsenal, despite the criticism.

Not sure if something similar has been posted or not. If yes, then I apologize for spaming.

A Local Newspaper published a calculation on how much kilometers each team has to travel during the group phases of the WC and it makes for some interesting numbers.

    Belgium 2079
    Algeria 3276
    Argentina 3556
    Russia 4686
    Iran 4757
    Chile 4792
    Spain 4925
    Honduras 5311
    Nigeria 5456
    Ghana 5520
    Colombia 5864
    Costa Rica 6208
    Holland 6247
    Ecuador 6573
    South Korea 6669
    Bosnia and Hercegovina 6765
    Greece 7087
    England 7120
    Germany 7338
    France 7480
    Brazil 8639
    Uruguay 10 406
    Cote D'Ivore 10 448
    Australia 10 753
    Portugal 11 993
    Switzerland 13 332
    Italy 13 663
    Japan 14 143
    Croatia 14 703
    Mexico 15 752
    Cameroon 15 852
    USA 16 366

The numbers are provisional as some teams could still make different decisions, but generally
they are the distances from their base camps to the places they play.

What 's worth noting is all of Brazil's opponents are in for a lot of traveling, whereas Brazil isn't.
Spain and Argentina seem to have decided to stay and train in one of cities they play in, both will have very good premises available (Atletico Mineiro and Atletic Paranense's stadiums), also some other teams might decide to do the same.

What personally annoys me is that the team I support (USA) , seems to be making really weird decisions. Besides the whole Landon Donovan case, which I still don't really understand, they choose a base 2615 kilometers away from their nearest Stadium.

I do hope this will help people in some way. At least in comprehending the sheer distances between the tournament cities and towns.

With the options available elsewhere I would say no. I have a feeling US won't have the best of World Cups.

As for him, he is expected to start and seems to have a fairly good season at Nantes.

Yeah he had a great season i think, i also have followed him for several years before Nantes as he played in 2 clubs here in Sweden. He were one of few real top players here.
I'm currently having him in my draft.

Good luck then, he is a good player, just given the group I'm not sure if he can produce much. Besides the threats of Germany and Portugal, USA have played Ghana twice and lost both match (the second one in overtime) at a WC.

Actually they were mentioned in the article as well. That there was some information that they might move between match cities and stay at each a couple of days. But yeah any changes like these boil down to wrong decision making in the preparation phase.

My wild card pick for this world cup is Eduardo Vargas because of Chile's style of play I think he'll get a lot of chances. What do you think?

What are your wild card picks?

I'd say Edin Dzeko..he tends to surprise and that group can have a lot of goals in it.

Hope Juan Fernando Quintero gets some minutes. Only seen him play in the U-20's last year but was very impressed. Good to see he made the full squad a year on.

Quite a few Belgians will be rested, including KDB, Lukaku and Witsel.
The likes of Alderweireld, Fellaini and Vermaelen who lack match fitness should start.

I expect to see our strongest back 4 with rotations elsewhere.
