Next up in our Group H assessment is Belgium. Regarded as one of the dark horses for the tournament, Marc Wilmots’ side will be hoping to live up to their billing and qualify from what looks a relatively straightforward first three fixtures. Up first is a showdown with underdogs Algeria on Tuesday June 17 at 5pm before the Belgians square up to Russia five days later at 5pm followed by a game against South Korea on Thursday June 26 at 9pm:

Road to Qualification

The Belgians eased through qualifying, finishing nine points ahead of any other team in a group that also contained Croatia, Serbia, Scotland, Wales and Macedonia. Winning eight and drawing two of their 10 fixtures, Wilmots’ side scored 18 times (though managed more than two goals on just one occasion) and conceded four times, with six clean sheets accrued.

Most Starts Thibaut Courtois, Axel Witsel (10) Jan Vertonghen (9), Kevin de Bruyne, Toby Alderweireld (8), Thomas Vermaelen, Christian Benteke, Moussa Dembele (7), Vincent Kompany, Eden Hazard (6)

Most Goals Kevin de Bruyne (4), Vincent Kompany, Kevin Mirallas, Christian Benteke, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku (2)

Most Assists Kevin de Bruyne (4),Dries Mertens, Jan Vertonghen (2)

The Key Targets

Since qualifying for Brazil 2014, the Belgians stumbled in a couple of friendlies before recently finding their form. Back-to-back defeats against Colombia and Japan weren’t helped by a lack of domestic game time for de Bruyne before a winter move from Chelsea to Wolfsburg boosted his match sharpness. A draw with Ivory Coast in March preceded wins over Luxembourg (5-1) and Sweden (2-0) over the past week or so, with the in-form Romelu Lukaku showing he’s a more than able deputy for the stricken Christian Benteke, with four goals in those two matches, whilst de Bruyne chipped in with a goal and a couple of assists.

Thibaut Courtois – at 5.9 in FantasyiTeam – is nailed-on between the sticks and once again excelled on loan at Atletico Madrid last term, though with two goals to his name over the qualifying period, skipper Vincent Kompany may be the backline option of choice for Fantasy managers. Kompany is the priciest option at the back, though, and comes in at 6.2 in FantasyiTeam. Either Thomas Vermaelen or Daniel Van Buyten (who has scored 10 goals at international level) will partner the City captain in the heart of defence and, whilst Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen (5.8 and 6.0 in FantasyiTeam) look to have the full-back berths sewn up, both are natural centre-backs and could face a tough time in the conditions against pacy wide men. Alderweireld started just 10 league games for Atletico Madrid in 2013/14 and Vertonghen struggled with a calf injury towards the latter part of the previous campaign, suggesting they may both be a little short in match sharpness. Similarly, neither Vermaelen or Van Buyten were regulars at Arsenal and Bayern last time around, whilst Kompany missed 10 league games through injury for City – with one clean sheet in their last seven matches, some may even decide to overlook the Belgian defence altogether.

Axel Witsel is Wilmots’ preferred option in the deep-lying central midfield role. He’s the only outfield player to start every qualifying match and whilst his consistency of game time is unparalleled, he’s unlikely to bring home attacking points – games which reward defensive contributions should heighten his appeal. Elsewhere in the middle of the park, Marouane Fellaini, Nacer Chadli and Moussa Dembele will vie for the two remaining positions in front of Witsel, though not one of the three have impressed domestically heading into the tournament. Given that both Fellaini and Chadli started five qualifiers and Dembele seven, it seems there’s little between them in Wilmots’ thoughts, suggesting we would be best to look for more definite contenders.

Luckily, Kevin de Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku all look viable options. After appearing from the bench in the first couple of qualifiers, de Bruyne started the subsequent eight but despite scoring twice the number of goals (four) and assists (four) than any Belgian player, he remains very reasonably priced in FantasyiTeam at just 5.9 compared to Hazard’s 7.5. The latter looks to have penalties to boost his appeal but his former Chelsea team-mate could be the wisest pick. As mentioned above, Lukaku has thrived in recent friendlies and looks a real in-form option for those thinking of doubling up on Wilmots’ side, with de Bruyne set to find his way into many teams. Coming in at 9.1 in FantasyiTeam, we’ll be hoping he improves upon the inconsistency that blighted some of his Fantasy returns at Everton.

The Long Shots

Whilst the front three looks nailed-on, Wilmots has some intriguing options to call upon off the bench. Both Kevin Mirallas and Adnan Januzaj offer alternatives on the flanks – the direct running and eye for goal of the Everton man, allied with Januzaj’s trickery and ability to put the opposition on the back foot, both look strong back-up options for the Belgians to call on midway through the second-half. Mirallas was utilised as a sub four times in qualifying and netted on two of those occasions – in the searing conditions, his fresh pair of legs off the bench could still pick up the points. You can snap them up in FantasyiTeam for 6.3 and 5.3 respectively.

I understand that teams need to prepare for the WC but these friendlies so close to the tournament are a recipe for losing some of the best players through injury. Not happy about how any of the organising has been done, from friendlies to tragedies like people dying in Brazil building stadiums. It's all an absolute mess...

To be fair, you can play anyone in these games. Your 23 man squad or your 30 man squad or outside. I think it's a decent initiative to get the players gelled together after a long break (of 3-4 months) of no international games.

I'm not saying it's a wrong idea it's just the timing. As for squad selection, realistically you're going to play your main players otherwise that whole gelling together theory is useless, no point sending out guys you won't play. As I say, the issue is timing, so close to the tournament even a minor injury can result in a few games missed.

My point is playing them so close to the tournament. They can play friendlies but even a couple of weeks earlier would allow pretty aggressive treatment of injuries sustained.

They need to get match fit at some point. I do believe that you lose your fitness within a week if you are not training at peak level.

You can also simulate match levels of fitness in training, it requires more intensive training but it is something that can be done. Friendlies don't even simulate the real demands of a WC match in many instances.

So what you're saying is that tactics can't be done in friendlies held a few weeks earlier instead? This is my whole point, they could play them earlier and then step up to intensive training for a couple of weeks.

Tactics can only be truly tested in matches. Practice can not match the intensity levels imo.

All Blacks are dirty and cenacle and always get away with decisions because they are the All Blacks. Don't know how Nonu got away with that shirt tug. Could only limp past England's C team at the hand of some of these decisions. Today's game just showed how much depth England have though. Class performance.

England were on top first half then faded away second. But dug deep and still managed to find their way into the lead before giving away a soft penalty. Yarde being sinbinned costing 3 points probably changed the game, moments before that however, England should have been awarded a penalty.

      Rooney

Am I the only person to have considered that Rooney's present form is due to his injury?

Rooney always seems to take a few games to get back up to speed after injury and there was a long gap between Rooney's last game for United and the Peru game. Maybe, just maybe, come the Italy game, Rooney will be to is best?

I think that's why he's getting constant gametime right now. He missed the end of the season and is using these games to catch up on his match fitness.

        He wasnt even injured!!

He decided he wasnt going to play meaningless Utd games, so he could rest for the WC, despite getting £300k a week from the fans, for playing for Utd.

I don't agree with that at all. It's been stated many times that rests do Rooney no good, he needs to play to keep his form.

Germany's attack covered - how about their defence?

I assumed left-to-right Durm Hummels Boateng Lahm, however last night it was Howedes Hummels Mert and Boateng with Lahm in midfield.

I'd really like Durm as he's cheap (in my work game no transfers), but if he's a risk then I can't get him in.

        Hey lads! #4draft here

As you might know, I'm playing a different World Cup game (I'm norwegian) than you are playing,
but I would appreciate greatly some help anyways, again 🙂

The game is very similar to FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE, albeit these main differences:
¤ 3 points extra to a player for winning a match, 1 points extra for draw
¤ No save points or bonus points awarded
¤ We get 3 transfers each round, at least in the group stages

So, would appreciate it very much if you rated my team, or see anyone I should get rid of immideatley!
(remember that the players might have different values than in the game you're playing)

Got 100 M to spread out on the team, and have 0M left
(hard for you to say anything about upgrading/downgrading, I know, but that isn't important here) 🙂
NOTE: Brazil is playing two times in the first round of the game I'm playing, Croatia and Mexico.

        Cesar(5.0)
        Ramos(6.0) ¤ Vertonghen(5.0) ¤ Evra(5.0)
        Muller(9.0) ¤ Hazard(9.0) ¤ Di Maria(8.5) ¤ Oscar(8.0)
        A.Sanchez(8.5) ¤ Neymar(C)(9.5) ¤ Messi(11.0)
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        Bench: Cillessen(3.5) - Garay(5.5) - Janmaat(4.0) ---- Cheapest mid available in the last spot for 3M

So to sum up, do you see any bad picks or failed tactics? It's quite a friendly budget we got.

Appreciate the help very much 🙂

          Depends on price.

Would you want to pay big money for a Mourinho attacker? He parks the bus after one goal! With Walcott, Ozil, Silva, Yaya, Mata, Gerrard etc, is he worth the outlay? Not to mention all the big hitting strikers we will want to afford.

Apologies if already mentioned, but, Chelsea look to announce Diego Costa transfer next week (yes I'm aware it's not specific news, but just extra on what's going on)

        http://www.football365.com/news/21554/9340477/Costa-Deal-Close...

I do think (& will be the general consensus) if a 'big' transfer (or transfers in general concerning WC players) don't happen before Tues, I would expect the rest of business to be done after... So could be an interesting few days....

Does anyone have experience posting a community article?
How long does it take for a submission to be reviewed and posted, typically?

Takes a while, 3 or 4 days or more depending on how many articles they have to sift through.

Japan almost the definition of a neutral schedule.
Teams with good schedule are Argentina, Belgium, France, Russia, Korea, Algeria.

It appears to be there are 2 approaches in counting "Recovered Balls" as per TM & Billy's posts in the last article.

Ramos had 27 RBs in UCL Finals under popular system of RB counting. How much less it would be if they count RBs with other approach?

No one knows what the other approach is. Only thing is certain is that it would be less than 27 😀

Hard to say as we don't know what the other approach really is.
Guessing in CL every tackle and block was included and Mc D will only count those where the team regains possession.

Reports in Holland saying Swansea have made an approach for Ajax striker Sigthorsson. If true then Bony has to be on his merry way. He's been linked with the likes of QPR as well.

Pompeyfan, you heard much on this?

I read about a €9m bid, not sure if true. As an Ajax season ticket holder, i would LOVE this, really dont rate him, very slow, doesnt score enough. Any money we get for him will be a great success!

Oh really? See that could suit, if he's a flop then Michu will be the main man again and Bony could be doing great at another club. Very interesting!

Im not saying he definitely wont do well in England, he might score some goals and then be rated. But I would say it's more difficult to make it as the Ajax striker, only 1 ever plays and you need to be a more complete player

Swansea City have launched a bid for Ajax striker Kolbeinn Sigthorsson. The Dutch champions want €9 million for the Iceland international, who is also wanted by Leicester City, Sunderland and West Ham.

Bony has 'said' he wants Champions league football.... Although Monk has stated that not a single bid has come in for him... Based on what Pompeyfan says, could be back up... Although Swansea not really a team that spends 9m on back up..

Bosnia's Kolasinac and Algeria's Bentaleb are my picks so far, both 110k.

Russia's Kombarov at 120k is definitely worth it too.

          Montazeri and Bentaleb.

But why would you need them? Prices are so generous that you should be able to fit in 8 big-hitting outfielders.
