This evening, we roll out the fourth instalment in our series of Burning Questions articles, focussing on some of the main dilemmas facing Fantasy managers for the season ahead. Having quizzed our contributors on Alexis Sanchez, Defensive Heavy Hitters and Robin van Persie, we now turn our attentions to Liverpool’s frontline as Brendan Rodgers’ side prepare for life without Luis Suarez:

Having served up 197 points in 2013/14, Daniel Sturridge has been slapped with an 11.5 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – the third costliest player available for our 15-man squads. With Suarez now gone to Barcelona, though, Rodgers will be leaning more heavily than ever on Sturridge to deliver but bearing in mind the Reds striker managed only 26 league starts due to injury last season, there are fears the increased schedule, brought on by Champions League duties, may have an impact on his ability to steer clear of injury.

With only a few days remaining until the season gets underway, we ask the Burning Question – Will Daniel Sturridge flourish or flounder without Luis Suarez?

Tom Fenley says…
Liverpool have lost their most creative player after Suarez’s move to Barcelona – given that he scored 31 of his side’s 101 goals and assisted 12 times, that’s a lot to find from the rest of the team. However, Sturridge will now be the focal point of a Rodgers side that will maintain the high pressure, fast breaks and attacking football that suited the England forward so much last season. He scored 22 goals and assisted eight times but played less minutes than Suarez and I think he will still be a consistent points scorer, snapping up a goal almost every game.

I expect him to make up some of the difference from Suarez leaving and see him scoring 25-30% of Liverpool’s goals, gaining lots of bonus points. The issue could be that he will probably only score that one goal each game – he does not often get braces, so while giving him the captaincy should be a safe bet but with a low ceiling. It also seems highly unlikely he will be fit for the entire season. I’m expecting Sturridge to grab at least 20 goals and be in and out of my team due to injury; certainly at 11.5 he is easy to downgrade, though Sturridge is a little expensive and at the level where his value is in the balance, suggesting he will need to be delivering consistently to stay in the frame.

Paul says…
I don’t doubt his goal-getting abilities but for me, the negatives outweigh the positives this season. Sturridge turns 25 on September 1 yet this is his first season as a first-choice forward in a team competing on the European front and his injury record doesn’t bode well. Earlier this summer, he flew home early from the club’s US tour with a hamstring injury and with the fixtures coming thick and fast, Rodgers may try to pre-empt any knocks and niggles by managing his game time more often.

Suarez’ loss cannot be downplayed. Liverpool scored four times in five matches without the Uruguayan last season compared to 97 strikes with him in the first XI – that’s 0.8 goals and 2.9 goals per game respectively. Yes, Sturridge notched all four of those goals in Suarez’ absence but over the course of an entire season, that’s a tough ask of anyone to replicate, never mind someone with Sturridge’s dodgy injury record.

Price is an issue, also. Last term’s exploits have catapulted Sturridge into the premium price bracket this time around and while I wouldn’t have any problem with him at 11.5 alongside Suarez, is he an 11.5-priced player without his former sidekick? I’m not so sure. Impressively, Sturridge’s average of 6.8 ppg last season was the equal of the 12.0-priced Sergio Aguero but if I had to choose one of this injury-prone pair to justify their lofty valuation, my money would be on the man from the Etihad.

D1sable says…
Even with Europe and an onus to stay fit all season (something he has never managed before) its hard to foresee Sturridge failing. The guy is just too selfish and too good at finishing – a perfect blend for us Fantasy Managers. You could argue that although Luis Suarez’ departure harms him in terms of creativity, but it also benefits the England striker as it means he will more regularly take a large share of the bonus points on offer. At 11.5 he has had a significant hike in price and I don’t see him as truly essential; however, handing Sturridge the armband when he plays at Anfield will surely feel warm and fuzzy more often than not.

Applebonkers says…
This one is fairly tricky to assess as whilst games without Luis Suarez in the past two seasons suggested flourish with a capital F, there were only nine of them. It was a small if impressive sample. With Suarez it’s 22 goals and 13 assists in 34 matches, without it’s nine goals and one assist in nine matches. He’ll lose Suarez’s creativity yet at the same time he’ll be a more central figure, with less attacks gobbled up by an often-overwhelming player.

Step to the side for a second though and look back at those two records combined (43 apps, 31 goals, 14 assists). This is Class A Fantasy beefcake; it will take an awful lot for him to suddenly flounder. My only real concern is the addition of European football on a historically fragile body. Likewise, Liverpool bombed out of both domestic cups very early last season. It was an FPL dream; he was at home making Subway commercials whilst Aguero and the rest were flying around Europe. Long story short, Sturridge is still my bet to push the Manchester strikers for the Golden Boot.

7shadesofsmoke says…
The trickiest of questions in my opinion. Daniel Sturridge will really have it up against him as the main man to carry the weight of new expectation in Liverpool’s attack. If we stretch our minds back to the pre-Suarez Liverpool at the start of last season, the Reds were making a habit of sneaking a “Danny Sturridge 1, Opposition 0†scoreline with the emerging Fantasy talent quietly tucking away modest points ahead of Suarez’s unleashing. It wasn’t until his strike partner had returned to wreak havoc on the league’s defences that Sturridge and Liverpool really started scoring Fantasy interest for attacking returns. With European competition to contend with (added injury risk?), the loss of a truly world class strike partner and a bar of expectation set very high for attacking returns, Sturridge will really have his work cut out if he is to top last season’s heroics.

Gavigon says…
As long as Liverpool retain their attacking effectiveness Sturridge will make hay. He didn’t have any trouble when Suarez was suspended, and if anything becomes more of the main man. If he stays fit and, as long as teams haven’t got Liverpool’s attack ‘figured out’, as Chelsea and Newcastle showed right at the end of last year by defending with a wall of eight, he should be in for a huge campaign.

Roscola says…
I think we have to look around the Liverpool team for inspiration on this one. For starters, this almost feels like a make or break season for Philippe Coutinho. Brendan Rodgers will be reliant on the young Brazilian to step up and fill in for their lost playmaker but I don’t know whether he’s got it in him, personally. I also think that Rodgers will be keen to deal with last season’s biggest problem- defence. There were individual failings aplenty but a lot of it was it was down to a somewhat gung-ho approach. That system came so close to winning the title because it played to their strength – Luis Suarez. Without him, I think Rodgers might want to rein in their attacking verve just a little and protect the defence that little bit more. If that did happen, it would be a double-blow for Sturridge’s potential.

Jonty says…
With Luis Suarez now at Barcelona, Sturridge will be the focal point of Liverpool’s attack and the player his team-mates will be most keen to pass to in the box. His talent as a goalscorer is not in question and, in theory, he should benefit in a team where he should hog the opportunities and goals. But with Suarez gone, Liverpool’s attacking powers will be more limited. In addition, Liverpool will have European football and in Rickie Lambert the side has a ready-made replacement for Sturridge when rotation is needed. I think Liverpool as a whole, and therefore Sturridge, will do well this season but I can’t see them scoring the same amount of goals with Champions League fixtures and the loss of one of the World’s best forwards.

Ryan says…
I think Sturridge will flourish. Without Suarez drawing a lot of the play, I think the rest of Liverpool’s key players will step up and take greater responsibility. Sturridge in particular will have a prominent role as he spearheads the attack without his former strike partner. What’s important, however, is that Sturridge won’t be left to do it on his own; Brendan Rodgers has already stated how he wants to see Jordan Henderson get up more often to score goals and if he expects this from a central midfield player, he will certainly expect more from his attacking midfielders. This is a good thing for Sturridge because with others chipping in to help out, the frontman will have the freedom to play his own game and not have to shoulder most of the goal scoring responsibility. I think Sturridge would struggle if he had to carry the team, fortunately for him he will have strong support in attack.

Mark Says…
Sturridge is another one who looked a shoo-in for my initial lineup and then, as the barmy summer passed by, the doubts began to creep in. The 11.5 price tag is the key factor – that’s a big price to pay for any striker, let alone one with fragile limbs. Watching Sturridge play is a rollercoaster for Fantasy managers – he’ll make sure he has plenty of goal attempts but then, at every challenge, his owners are forced to wince and look away. Every time he’s subbed early, you wonder if he’ll make the next match. I can see him scoring 20 goals but then, I can also see the likes of Diego Costa, Romelu Lukaku and even Olivier Giroud running him close for total points given they’ll likely get more pitch time. Alongside that, I have to consider that Brendan Rodgers will look to get more from his midfield – that could see Raheem Sterling and Phillipe Coutinho offer strong value that could ultimately tempt me to overlook Sturridge.

This! A dedicated forum would be so much more organised than just posting on every topic, that way comments could actually be related to the article.

I think Sturridge is too expensive at 11.5m when you have Rooney and Costa for 1m less.

(reposting because FFS started a new article as I did it)

        THE ESSENTIALS

After careful consideration. I have come up with the six players, two from each position and excluding keepers (which are more open for rotation and negligible points differences) that I would deem ESSENTIAL going into the new season.

        Defenders:

Gary Cahil: Over the course of the full season it is an even money bet that Chelsea will concede the least goals and keep the most clean sheets. Cahil is the best way into that defence as he’s the least at risk of rotation, and he offers a good goal scoring threat. Having a Chelsea defender is a must for anybody long term planning. Cahil is the obvious and least risky choice.

Leighton Baines: Criminally ignored by most of the FFS crowd, Baines is priced at 7m for a reason. He is, pound for pound, million for million, the most guaranteed points accumulator in the entire game. In his last 5 season Baines has scored 20 goals, assisted 34 and kept 42 clean sheets. He will almost certainly score/assist 10-12 goals combined which means 80 points straight away once you include bonuses. He only needs to therefore keep a clean sheet once in every four matches to get, once again, above the 160 mark. People have complained about his poor start with Arsenal & Chelsea and home, combined with Liverpool and Utd away in his first seven fixtures. In those four matches last season Everton kept three clean sheets (and, as ever, got slaughtered at Anfield). In the Arsenal game alone Baines collected 15 points. Ignore the fixtures. Unless he gets injured, there is no defender in the game that each and every week has the points potential that Baines has. Ignoring him costs teams chasing the big prizes again and again and again. Put simply. Invest.

        Midfield:

Aaron Ramsey: At the start of the summer Ramsey’s 9m was talked about as being over the top, already that view has changed to him being a bargain. Ramsey is the natural heir to the Lampards and Gerrards of 7 or 8 years ago. Box to box midfielders who fed on the space created by the attackers. In a team brimming with creative talent, Ramsey is the key man for Arsenal and priced at a full 1.5 less than the more unproven Sanchez, is an absolute non brainer. Build your team around him.

David Silva: (greets intake of breath) There is one problem and one problem only with David Silva. He gets injured, quite a lot. If you took that out of his game you get a player who averages 7 points a match and picks up assists for fun (no player has more in the last four seasons... and he’s played less than the equivalent of 3 seasons in that time). But he’s a risk you say. You’ve just told me he always gets injured. Well yes he does, but rarely for a long time and he tends to be a player who his rested to manage his condition rather than break down in every game a’la Aguero. The solution? Rotate him. Perhaps with Fab or Mata, but also with Eriksen or Sterling who are priced less and will both likely rise. Silva is a not a player to put in your team and casually abandon. But if you manage him correctly, you can pick up his consistent points and cash in on other teams whilst he’s not on the pitch to boot.

        Forwards:

Wayne Rooney: As the new captain of Man Utd and having never achieved less than 142 points in a FF season, Rooney looks very undervalued by those at FF towers. He will surely achieve 200 points minimum this season if he stays injury free (always the forever if) and has the start that dreams are made of. It is completely inexplicable that anyone can enter the season without him in their starting line up. His ownership of 44% reflects just that, given essentially half of the people who play the game are idiots.

Daniel Sturridge: The main man in an attack that brims with pace and verve, even without the departing Suarez. Indeed the latters exit means Sturridge is now essential as he will be the key man to convert the copious chances created by the talent behind him. Sturridge has achieved an absurd 44 goals and 18 assists in the last 3 years. Absurd because he has only played for the equivalent of 64 matches in that time. Giving him a PPG average of 6.6. There is no reason why he shouldn’t keep that up this time around, which would give him a score of 250. Making his price tag of 11.5 worth every, single penny.

And so there it is. Injuries of course play a part, but in the main these are the premium players and so there are good options to transfer them out in such eventualities. Crucially, they are the premium players for a reason. Because for all the punts and promises, these are players who have been there and proved time and time again to be worth investing in (with the possible exception of Ramsey). If you had all six in your team you are probably going to get 1300 plus points between them over the course of the season (factoring in one of them being captain). Indeed, just based on last years figure and taking the captain score as a mean, they would have got you 1200 and Ramsey, Rooney and Silva were missing for long periods in that.

I’m not saying you won’t get close to the leaders unless you have all six of these players in your team. But unless you have at least 3 or 4 I’d be very worried going into the season unless you’re planning for a week 3 wild card.

im getting everton cover after GW8 or so, no chance before. that start is WAY too risky.

silva will deliver well but so will mata, hazard, fabregas, sterling etc. he's not essential because there are many other good options in midfield.

the others are all good picks but not necessarily essential imo.

it's hard to get all six of them in. I only have four (I don't have Silva or Sturridge to begin with) but other than the midfielders (which I admit are much harder to call) I see nobody making a case for anybody scoring more points than these players.

Essentials: Idiot!!! 😉 The clear strategy here, is to get Ivanovic you the best, and to replace with the Baines of all rotators, GW8.

Midfield: Idiot!!! 😉 The problem is NOT his injuries, but that he will not score 10 goals at that price.

Forwards: Genius!!! Of course! Why didn't I think of that!!! 😀

Ivanovic? Go ahead, waste your 7m on a player who will liberally rotated with two new full backs (he's not going to displace Terry/Cahil as first choice CB's at the start). Baines, unless he gets injured, will still score 35-40 points in his first seven fixtures.

Silva's lack of goals are made up for by assists. Although his case is weaker than the defenders and attackers. His PPG stats are unbelievable when he starts (over 7.5 I think)

As I see it, only two types of player can be truly described as 'essential'. One is a big hitter performing at the top of their game, who is also captained by the majority of FPL players, like Suarez, or RVP or Bale at certain points. The other is a budget option performing like a premium one, such as Ramsey or Michu. At the start of the season, no-one is essential, though Rooney is the closest with his high ownership.

This, pretty much. Essentials to me are players you have to have even if you don't particularly want them. Like Suarez last season. Even when he scored well it made no difference because everyone had him.

you can replace Silva with Fab or Mata if you wish, but that team will get a lot of points. People undervalue scoring defenders so much preseason. That is why Baines always delivers and Coleman went mental last year. It's so unlikely that a sub 5m defender will get you more than 110 points. They are all essentially total punts. Baines is a guaranteed 160 points for just 7m. You cannot buy that value anywhere else in the game.

Cynical Steve, I've played around with a few variations of this defence and I'm definitely doing something along these lines...

If you got Debuchy in for Terry, then I would suggest looking at Cavies or a Spurs defender as the best option to cover the rest...

        Debuchy Cavies Ward Caulker Clyne

25.5m and always 3 good fixtures... (where there are only 2 good fixtures, GW8 & 11, at least the tough games are at home)

But I understand the attraction of Terry as well... so right now I'm having him and a 4m...

I rate Debuchy and Curtis Davies as well, but I'd prefer to have Terry and a 4.5/4.0.

I think our instinct to spend a bit more in the back will pay dividends.

There aren't many viable options in the 4.0 - 4.5 price range, so I'm happy to spend more.

Changing Sigurdsson to an 8.5 midfielder or striker means 4 defensive downgrades. I'd much prefer to have a solid backline than a chance to score a few more points with one "better" player.

Was really looking at Rooney-Costa-Sturridge but i think it's safe to go without sturridge. he will score well no doubt, but 11.5 well? i have my doubts. i was originally thinking i need a plan to get him gw 4 where he has AVL but that may not be needed. United have QPR and Chelsea have SWA so you can still safely captain either of them.

        Rooney-Costa-Dzeko for me.

I'm stuck on the same thing. I ecpect Sturridge to score goals and rise in price by gw4.
Comes down to Sturridge and Mutch/Young or Jovetic and Sterling 😕

its a tricky one eh, i just cant see him justifying that price tag, despite him being a quality striker.

Jov over Dzeko? When Kun is back Jov will definitely be the one to make way imo.

i really like young early btw

they are ok i reckon. the thing is while negredo is injured, dzeko should start just about every game,i honestly don't find a great player but with all that creativity behind him he will bang some in. a steal a 8.5 early

They described Bojan as a bit of a Freddy Adu on Football Weekly. Yes he has a bit of talent, but ship may have sailed in terms of him making the most of it.
Having said that he could spank in a brace vs. villa & make me eat humble pie.

After yesterdays look at UFPL Goalkeeper options, today i'm looking at defensive choices, the majority of your funds should be spent up top and in midfield, however a solid defense is needed to keep the points ticking over.

Other than the standard FPL scoring rules, defenders also gain points for an accumulation of blocks, clearances, Interceptions and recoveries. After some careful research on Whoscored, it seems centre-backs garner more CBIs and Recoveries than full-backs, and CBs who lead mid table defenses pick up the most CBIs. Teams such a West Ham, Swansea, Stoke, Hull and Cardiff all seemed to be near the top in the respective CBI + R categories. Picking dominant center backs from these teams seems the best way to construct an UFPL defense. Bear in mind you still need to think about options for both Saturday and Sunday games to maximize potential points.

        Reserves
You want players who should start just in case you need them, but these players should never exceed 4.5m. 2 or 3 of these will do.

Moore (4m) – should start every game for Leicester, a team who could be under the kosh for most games, blocked shots and clearances could be high.

Wisdom (4m) – defensive injuries to WBA should solidify his spot for a while

Bruce + Bartley (Both 4m) – Both players flirting with a starting berth at two good defensive sides, if either can nail down a spot they will be worth including.

        Mid Priced Options
Should make up the bulk, if not all, of your squads defenders. All are Leading DEFs from mid table solid teams.

Curtis Davies (5m) – 3rd in interceptions, 10th in clearances, 13th in BS, possibly the best CB you could buy for UFPL, great stats for all the important categories, can score, nailed on for a Hull defense with excellent opening fixtures. should have a few Sunday games when EL starts.

Joel Ward (5m) – 9th in interceptions, 6th in tackles, nailed on in a rock solid Palace team, sometimes is OOP in midfield.

Williams (5m) – 12th in interceptions, 6th in clearances, 6th in BS, Stalwart at the heart of a decent Swansea defense

Shawcross (5.5) – 12th for clearances, 3rd for blocked shots, Dominant in a stoke side many are tipping for a breakout season. Strong Opening fixtures.

Caulker (5.0) – 1st in BS, 13th in clearances, managed huge points last season in a poor Cardiff team, Huge goal threat (5 last year)

Note – Stoke and Swansea, as well as CPL and QPR rotate fantastically well for the first half of the season.

        Premium Picks
The premium players will rely on clean sheets as the bigger teams players don’t features near the top of any of the above defensive statistic. The difference in points between these premium players and the above picks can be as little as 20 points, combined with the fact the mid priced options should offer a steady stream of points when not getting Clean sheets, whereas the premium options could be faced with a low score is they let a goal in.

Terry (6.5m) – Chelsea should be good for 15+ clean sheets this season, combined with Terrys goal threat means he is a solid premium pick.

Baines (7m) – being set piece wizard means Baines is good for 5 goals and assists a season. 7th in tackling, although his high crossing and Key pass stats could mean he picks up points where traditional defenders don’t.

        Conclusion
The value is clearly in the mid priced slot, 3-4 of these coupled with perhaps one premium option should provide a good defensive base.

        Any thoughts or opinions?

Have a look at more a more detailed post on http://ultimatefpl.wordpress.com/

I don't have Yaya, Studge, nor Fab...and I'm not afraid of them. Yaya and Sturridge are too expensive and things fell right for them last year (especially Suarez taking the focus off of Stu).

          Aguero for me!!!

He's had barely a mention on FFS so far but he's only on a yellow status now. He's the one I'm nervous about not owning (after GW1) and at £12m getting him in is going to be tougher that Sturridge!

I know! I go to red bulls games relatively often as I live in New York and I went to their first match after the MLS's world cup break and I was startled to see that the place was entirely full of fans whereas there can usually be about two or three thousand seats empty and the amount of supporters that went to the friendlies in the states this summer was tremendous! The quality of play still isn't up to the level of some of the bigger leagues but slowly, slowly its getting easier on the eyes

        Two best 4.5m defenders?

Have PVA and Chester atm but wondering if Chambers is worth the risk for the first 1-2 weeks?

Hearing Kos has an achilles problem which could be beneficial to Chambers.

Fair enough. Defensive trannies are generally a waste, more potential points to be gained by using each freebie in attack. There's always exceptions to the rule though

Then if you get it wrong you are losing out on a player for a GW and need to make a transfer anyway

Too risky when Chambers (for example) is almost assured to start GW at home...

Trouble is i really like Billy Jones over PVA. Had him in my squad until he got yellow flagged. Hate to take a gamble on a 2 week punt on a 4.5 defender though. sounds like a recipe for a needless hit. Someone made a good point about Chester. Apparently the 2 defender signings are cup tied thus making chester the one to play in Europa. Might get rested in the league!

BTW....what about that team competition we are in. I have registered, what are the rules? Do you need anything from your trusty VC ?

Will he get a spot in the starting line-up?

I desperately need an extra 0.5m and I'm thinking of downgrading Ward for him, but i need to be fairly confident on him starting.

In the early part of the season Cesc may be a better pick, he's match fit and Hazard isn't.
After a few weeks though I would much prefer the extra million on Hazard.

Mangala has a decent goal scoring record. Anyone tempted?

Seeing a lot of Hendo love at the moment, and for me he's the archetypal mediocre midfield pick (see also Snodgrass).

Yeah, he'll score consistently over the season, but think about that for a second. Lets say he gets a goal, an assist, a couple of clean sheets a yellow card and a couple of bonus points over his first five fixtures. A pretty decent return for him, equivalent to 7 goals and assists over a season.

        Or to put it another way, thats 10 + 5 +3 +2 +2 -1 = 21 pts @ 4.2 ppg

At which point you realize that while you've been hanging on to your 4.2 ppg player, N'Zogbia* has gone mental, and got 3 goals and a couple of assists and is rocketing in value. At which point you sell Henderson for N'Zogbia, which you should have done after GW1 because N'Zogbia's* price has rocketed and Hendo has fallen because everyone else has sold him.

        But still, 4.2 ppg.

The alternative is to get say Sigggurdson. Yeah, he may bomb and pick up a single assist in the first 3, but you'd just sell him at that point anyway for a bandwagon and you'd hardly be any worse than if you'd had Hendo. On the other hand, he could be that explosive bandwagon which you are then on from the start.

The point is that steady scoring players are generally a bad idea in FPL as you want players who will get big scores when they have good fixtures. This counts double early on when you need to be hopping on bandwagons when prices are especially volatile.

I therefore think that its better to take a gamble on mid-priced players early on rather than playing safe and ultimately being let down by mediocrity.

*N'Zogbia will clearly do none of this, but you get the point

          The problem with Hendo is hes one of them that will get 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 22, 2, 1,2 3, 15, 2, etc

if you bench or sell the wrong week hes been a complete waste of time and you could have missed someone else.

All good points. Another thing that's keeping me away from Hendo is that he's a prime candidate for an early price drop. Ideally I like my early transfers to be proactive rather than preventing a price drop.

Whether its injury/fitness issues, bad fixtures or uncertainty over lineups, there are so many problems with the premium defenders to start the season.

I'm just going to have to get Kolarov.

Mangala makes Kolarov a better pick too. Maybe it's finally Aleks' year.

I've got my eye on Lovren from GW4, he could be my escape route.

He could well be nailed this season. He's improved his game a lot in the past year.

          Could soon be essential.

His attacking record was really good last year and he seems set to continue that based on the Community Shield. With a little luck he won't make the Champions League squad either.
