With seven clean sheets and 23 goals, Southampton have enjoyed a tremendous first 11 Gameweeks to the season. They sit second in the Premier League with players such as Graziano Pelle in attack and Ryan Bertrand in defence proving to be cast-iron Fantasy assets.

However, while the Saints have strong momentum, over the coming weeks they face a daunting spell leading up to Christmas and beyond.

Gameweek 12’s trip to Villa provides easy passage into a run that introduces back-to-back matches with Arsenal, Man City and Man United. Indeed, Ronald Koeman’s side will then face Everton, Chelsea and Arsenal again in the three home fixtures that follow. In short, it’s an evil spell that could well reduce Fantasy output from back to front.

With this in mind, and with Pelle already shedding owners having gone three outings without a goal, our first of two “Burning Questions” this week asks whether Southampton players should be retained or ditched?

Jonty says…
Keeping on top of big shifts in the Premier League fixture list is crucial for me as a Fantasy manager. During Southampton’s kind and very long run of games, which ends in Gameweek 12, I stocked up on their assets. In came Ryan Bertrand and Graziano Pelle in Gameweek 6 and Dusan Tadic a week later.

It was a move that has gone on to define my season with this trio bringing in a total of 45 points in Gameweek 8, when I climbed more than 150,000 places into the top 10,000. Three Gameweeks on I’m still in this elite bunch, in fact now into the too 5,000 thanks in part to Pelle’s consistent returns and Bertrand’s clean sheets. I’m not sure in seven years of playing Fantasy football one team has defined my season in such a way.

But time moves on. From Gameweek 13 they face a run that includes City, United, Everton and Chelsea at home and Arsenal away. It’s one of the worst runs of opponents I’ve ever seen. Just as I constructed a team to take advantage of their kind spell, I will now look to build a lineup that takes advantage of others who have far better fixtures. From Gameweek 13 I will either ditch all three of my Southampton assets with hits or use my wildcard.

Tadic will always have a special place in my heart with his 23-point haul in Gameweek 8, but he has achieved little since with his strong underlying stats rarely translating into Fantasy points. For me, Nacir Chadli, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Stewart Downing all offer better points potential at a cheaper price.

Pelle has been reliable against weaker sides. But I don’t think he’ll maintain that against stronger opponents. Besides, for around a million less I can get other strikers like Charlie Austin or Diafra Sakho with better fixtures and similar returns.

Bertrand has to go as well. As Heels Over Head points out in his excellent recent analysis of clean sheet data, Southampton are unlikely to maintain their excellent shut-out rate. For a million more I can tap into Chelsea’s defence. For a million less I can invest in a Burnley or Newcastle defender and use Bertrand’s cash to invest in my Alexis Sanchez fund. Fantasy Football can be a ruthless business but, in order to stay at and improve on the rank Southampton have helped me achieve, I am ready to dump their players without hesitation.

Greenwindmill says…
My view on this is probably warped by what was undoubtedly the best (luckiest) transfer I made last season: After 6 clean sheets, a goal, numerous bonus points and several price rises in the first 11 Gameweeks, it wasn’t an easy decision to dump Jose Fonte. However, Southampton’s fixtures took a turn for the worse so I took the plunge and swapped him for Per Mertesacker ahead of Southampton’s Gameweek 12 trip to the Emirates. Arsenal ran out 2-0 winners with Fonte dragging down Mertesacker for a late penalty, picking up a yellow card in the process. The incident took Fonte’s score down to zero, whilst earning Mertesacker an assist and two bonus for a score of 11. In total Mertesacker picked up 55 points in the nine weeks after I bought him. Fonte got a mere 10 in the same period.

The cynical amongst you will realise this is essentially just an excuse to brag about the one occasion last season where I made a good move. The more generous spirited elements of the community may interpret this as a valuable lesson in trusting fixtures over form (at least where defenders are concerned). I’d like to think it serves both purposes – personally I’ll be switching Nathaniel Clyne to a Swansea/West Ham defender in the hope of similar fortune to last season. I’ll also be losing Sadio Mane and Pelle for players with a little more blue on their season ticker. This may come back to haunt me but I’m crossing my fingers and hoping this is my Mertesacker moment for this year.

7 Shades of Smoke says…
Southampton are on fire right now. They’ve produced a quality goal scoring striker for around eight million, a decent midfielder for any price bracket, and go into the Gameweek 12 trip to Villa with an incredible seven clean sheets in their last ten after that 2-1 defeat at Anfield in the opening weekend of the season.

Those who’d booked tickets for Saints’ options early were handsomely rewarded, riding the strength of their fixtures all the way to Villa Park. A journey that’s been so good to so many Fantasy managers, they’d easily be forgiven for missing their stop.

Before the clouds draw in, let’s not forget that Saints are looking a quality side. They’ll score goals in tough games and the likes of Pelle and Tadic – who lie sixth and third respectively in the ICT index – will continue to be involved, though it seems reasonable to expect their opportunities to whither through the winter.
With plenty of other options coming into great form, fixtures, or better still; both, Fantasy managers may chose to give these options a stay of execution while the assess the likes of Wilfried Bony and Christian Benteke as mid-long term replacements.

In defence lies a critical decision, however. If we extrapolate Saints’ clean sheet form (70%) through to the season’s end, they’d pick up another 19 from the remaining 27 games.

To put that into perspective, the tightest defences of the past three seasons produced less for the whole campaign on average – Chelsea and Manchester City’s 18 in 2013/14 and 2012/13 respectively, and Manchester United’s 20 in 2011/12. Given that Southampton have bagged seven already, that additional 19 clean sheets projection now looks massively inflated, and a quick glance at the glorious vista through the rear window of the Saints bandwagon gives an inclination as to why (Saints’ last ten: WBA, whm, NEW, swa, QPR, tot, SUN, STO, hul, LEI). In contrast, the forecast for Saints’ next nine isn’t quite so bright (MCI, ars, MUN, bur, EVE, cpl, CHE, ARS, mun). With Chelsea offering deluxe packages to the promised land of clean sheet consistency, and Swansea and Aston Villa advertising fair weather trips for any budget, it seems that Villa Park could make an apt interchange for Fantasy managers planning defensive budgets for the journey ahead.

Spencer says…
I currently have three Southampton players; Bertrand, Clyne, and Pelle. I’ve had Clyne from the beginning, and when Pelle since Gameweek 5, and Bertrand in Gameweek 6. Pelle has been consistent for me, but with fixtures stiffening and cheaper options with more favourable fixtures becoming available (Diafra Sakho, Saido Berahino, maybe even Danny Ings), I think it’s time to ditch the big Italian.

The defence is not such an easy decision, however. Rightly or wrongly, I’ve experimented with a number of double-ups in defence this season (West Brom, Newcastle and Southampton), with the Saints pairing being the most successful by far.

My double Southampton defence feels like a Toyota Prius; reliable but just a bit dull. My current thinking is that I’m going to break up this pairing and go for something cheaper like a Peugeot 207, aware that every now and then it will break down, but knowing that with the money saved, I can get also get a slightly more exciting Volkswagen Golf. With a little bit of shopping around, I might even stumble on a GTI!

Mark says…
I’ve already nailed my colours to the mast here – shedding Bertrand somewhat prematurely in Gameweek 10 in order to fund an urgent move for Alexis Sanchez. Looking ahead, I knew I could turn to Calum Chambers in my 3-4-3 and that Bertand’s forthcoming fixures threatened to produce a run of 2-pointers.

I won’t be considering Southampton’s rearguard again until they’ve navigated through Gameweeks 13-15. If they show resilience through that spell, I may plan to invest again and I suspect I’ll still be able to pick up Toby Alderweireld for 5.0 should that be the case.

In attacking areas, my soft spot for Tadic could be my undoing. He’s one of those players you want to keep for the silky deft touches on Match of the Day and the huge Opta numbers he produces week on week. However, the big return of Gameweek 8 is a fading memory after three consecutive blanks, making the trip to Villa’s a big one for myself and other Tadic converts.

I still think he can offer value – there’s a cast of mid-price assets on show this season and, while Tadic is pricey by comparison, I’ve faith that, with set-piece duties and penalties, the Serb schemer can deliver points to warrant his price tag – even against stiff opposition.

Another blank at Villa might just change my mind. Fantasy football is fickle like that.

Applebonkers says…
First of all I really wish Ronald Koeman was my dad. He just seems so nice, so happy, so wise. However, can we trust someone who seems so perfect? Of course not, he’s definitely hiding something, that’s just how it works. The upcoming run of fixtures definitely has the potential to expose his bizarrely placed third nipple and his chronic flatulence problem.

I’m sure I’m not saying anything particularly interesting or enlightening here but those fixtures are filthy. They have showed enough signs that they will compete in these big games but I reckon this will be more in an attacking sense than defensively. This could still mean there is something in Clyne and Bertrand but are this pair really in the Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman echelons of play anyway in case of attacking points? I think they’re still in the clean sheets are bread and butter camp.

I’d definitely let go of their centre backs but Frazer Forster is trickier due to save points and the “limpet-ablity” of goalkeepers, so I’m 50/50 there. That leaves the attacking players. Can they be relied on to keep it going like former stalwarts Le Tissier, Beattie and Dia? I don’t think any of them showed enough against Liverpool, West Ham, Swansea or Tottenham. Bank the price rises and hope for more of the same, especially from “statzilla” Tadic.

Seeing that most of us are scrambling to get our defense organised after the Baines injury, it's worth pointing out that Alan Hutton is expected to be fit.

'Hutton I think will be back after the internationals' , according to Paul Lambert.

Scrambling? What are you on about!! He may play next week and if he doesn't it's not worth transferring him out for a only a week....classic example of FFS overly-dramatic post

Overly dramatic? I never said he was worth transferring out. By 'scrambling' I meant that people are finding it difficult this week in his absence with the likes of Saylor,Moore and Hutton doubts to play and Naylor/Wisdom having difficult fixtures. Geez, some people...

The world "scrambling" implies panic, so it is overly dramatic. Posts like this don't help less experienced players. You don't need to do any transfers with respect to Baines or waste one on a defender that could come in as a sub....

Yes I have, plenty of times. This forum is about helping people not about being "positive" and also people who post ridiculous things have to be brought to account as this is not helpful for more inexperienced players....I'm one of the few who is afraid to do that. I do help peole and am "nice," there's no need to be "posotive" on this site though, if something's bad I'll say likewise if someone is being ridiculous.....

TFF said "most of us are scrambling to get our defence organised". If Baines' injury doesn't affect you then there's no need to comment, not once did he advise people to sell Baines or any other defenders for that matter. He also said "most of us" which clearly doesn't mean everyone.

The purpose of his post was to provide useful information that a highly-owned defender on FFS may be fit to play next week. The only thing "overly-dramatic" is your reply.

Post was not informative, everyone knows that he may be fit for next week...he's also not highly owned. Scrambling definitely suggests transfers, I offred my opinion that nothing should be done. For the record an informative post is QPR Expects' post on Cualker and Vargas etc. I am entitled to my opinion, you are obviously not mature enough not to get offended when someone offers criticism. There's a difference between 'he may be fit' (as everyone thinks) and 'I expect him to be fit' (when said by the manager). More than 50% in the community own him so he is a highly owned ayer around these parts.

All opinions matter equally, im not above the rest of you in that regard. But the fact that anyone thinks diving has its place in the game of football are wrong. Theres just not if ands or buts about that.

Don't ever go to South America. Drawing a foul, or even diving to win one, is seen as an art among forwards.

I understand that you don't like cheating, but everyone cheats. Claiming a ball hit an opponent and that it's your throw-in is cheating.

I know its part of their culture there. You dont think theres a reason why every player coming to top european clubs with those ways are beeing forced to remove their habits?

Just because everyone cheats, doesnt mean you should like it or ever accept it. I dont cheat. So i cant relate to cheating and wont ever condone it.

So you would admit a ball hit your hand in the penalty area when the ref didn't see it? In a competitive match where you maybe dislike your opponents?

I'd be surprised if anyone would.

Ofcourse i wouldnt. Thats not cheating if it was by accident. The cheating im talking about is actively trying to decieve the officials by plain swindle.

So perhaps your opponents are claiming you did and your hands were in an "unnatural" position at the time. Are you going to deny to a referee who is clearly undecided that it hit your hand?

If you did, you're lying to deceive the ref. Ergo cheating. It's not as black and white as you seem to be suggesting.

Lol, youre deviating from the original discussion so much with your fancy psycology. If that situation were to ever arise, and id actually get into a longer talk with the ref, more likely than not would i not admit that the ball actually hit my hand simply because i didnt trust him to actually believe that i didnt do it intentionally.

Diving is pretty black and white. Thats cheating. I cant really see what youre going to say to make me ever change my mind on that.

Just to pick up on what Psychobingo replied above....an anecdote....

My son is a tidy player and no doubt..he plays in the West Lancs prem league who have a good track record for youth players turning pro. By some quirk when they play cup games they get thrown in with the Merseyside youth teams as well as West Lancs...I can't even begin to tell you how much better some of those teams are..scary stuff at times...and yes, I can see that Liverpool may well uncover their own gold to replace Gerrard.

Because players would rather sit on the bench or stay in the reserves and pick up a pay check than go abroad like other foreign players and improve as a player. How many English players don't play in England?

I've kept quite a close eye on Liverpool's youth team in the last year, and I have to say there's an incredible amount of talent there.

Connor Randall, Jordan Williams, Brad Smith (already played for Australia I think), Chirivella, Ojo, Brannagan, Teixeira (on loan at Brighton where he's scoring goals last I checked), Harry Wilson, Samed Yesil, Jack Dunn, Ryan Kent, Jordan Lussey, Jordan Ibe, etc

Obviously hard to see many breaking through, but the quality in the academy/reserves/loanees is as good as its been in years

Pool are at a very interesting point now, at least for someone like me who enjoys delving into the business aspect of it all and the politics as well as the tactics of the football. The real youth force out there at the moment in the PL, if I am correct, are Manchester City. They have some terrifyingly good youngsters.

Yeah I've heard that too, but I have less respect for them because none of those youngsters ever get a look-in in their first team squad.

Need a striker? Here's £20m for Jovetic. Need a fullback? Sign Clichy. Need a DM, sign the Nando' twins. Never, ever look to the academy.

It is, sadly, a business model that is quite successful. I don't agree with it but it is how football has gone/is going more and more. All the top teams commit these errors frequently, some worse than others.

I think the Watchlist is based more on projected/predicted points rather than current form or recent points. If it was going to be identical to FPL's "form" stat there would be no point having it... At least that's the only explanation I can think of for Ivan being that high!

Btw, Triggerlips is the one who puts the watchlist together, is it not?

Lovren is also on the watchlist for example, but that must be down to his incoming fixtures rather than any points form.

Not ONLY on current form though:

          A, B, C Current Form
          Vs Favourable Fixtures
          VsX Unfavourable Fixtures
          Rest Rotation Risk
          Inj Injured/Returning from Injury
          OoP Out of Position

"Gonna" is not misspelled. It's a verbal contraction that is commonly used in informal speech and written communication.

In contrast, "your" was misspelled for the particular use in question.

                      Oh, the irony.

Umm no that's the order of the watchlist. Within it is the form part, which has him at a B. Chambers is also at B form despite getting 25 points in 3 games.

The order of the watchlist is not based on FPL's "form" stat (which is ppg in last 4 gw's).... otherwise how do you explain Ivan being 2nd for defenders?

Yeah, i agree. He belongs here, and after he turned down bigger offers at his peak (albeit not without controversy), and he still has value to the team and more so to the club as a leader/guider. But i fear that his time as an essential first team member has passed and we need to look on for replacement.

Hopefully. He can still start and dictate games, but i look for more of a Giggs role, the way Ferguson utilized him at his later stages. Play 2-3 games a month, and be fully fit and focused to do his very best. He still has one of the best right feet in the league, but hes not really able to dominate in every climate anymore. Sad as it is, all good things come to an end. =/

I dont disagree that hes very exciting. But hes only 20, and not someone we can really rely on. What we really need is a Matic type. 24-25, established, consistent. Those are hard to come by, and when you find them they`re pretty sought after, which is why we have to find and develop our own gold.

I think the Can signing for £9.75m was an absolute steal, and Bayern weren't too happy about the loophole in his contract that allowed him to be sold so cheaply. He'd easily cost twice that next summer, and will be one of those Matic types that everyone wants in a couple of seasons

Again, i dont disagree with you. Out of all the signings we`ve made this summer, he looks to be the best one in terms of value. That doesnt change the fact that hes not there YET. When Chelsea paid £25m for Matic, they knew what they had bought, and they got it straight away. And thats the whole point im trying to get across.

Yeah I get what you're saying, but perhaps that £20m holding midfielder is something to target next summer when Gerrard is winding down and Lucas is probably sold. It would have been far too disruptive to tackle that position this summer already when we already had 8-9 new faces.

If you consider the whole squad and which age/value profile the owners move away from, the players that will need replacing in the next 1-2 seasons will be:

                    GK: new 2nd GK
                    RB: Glen Johnson
                    CB: Skrtel/Toure... with Ilori probably
                    LB: Enrique
                    DM: Lucas (and eventually Gerrard)

In most if not all of the other positions there are young and rising players coming through, and I think the project of changing the demographics of the whole squad is only one or two transfer windows away from being complete.

We need some real star talent though. I know theres no such thing, but we need another Torres/Suarez. Someone to carry the team through the rough times, deciding games when the team is playing poor. Atm we dont have that. Possibly Sturridge, but hes too unreliable due to injuries.

Yeah I agree. I think there's plenty more to come from Markovic, Coutinho, and Balotelli though. Origi will be a breath of fresh air for the team next year too. We severely lack that pace through the middle upfront this season with Sturridge out.

Remember how a lot of people were saying that Sterling should get loaned in January 12 months ago? The same could be said about Markovic... he looked really promising in preseason and in his cameo at the Etihad as well, so I think he'll come good once he gets settled and gets some fitness and gametime.

He's a maybe, pretty much only that. Currently I think Pool need a real replacement, they have gambled on "maybes" so much, sometimes it has worked and others it hasn't. I think a real strong buy in that area of the pitch will help Pool immensely.

How is a German youth star who Bayern/Leverkusen only sold because of a sneaky clause a maybe at best?

What was Matic doing at age 20? Playing in the serbian league thats what. Some perspective please...

Now if you want the full skinny on the "star" quote, I will say that I watch the Bundesliga a good deal and I've seen him play frequently for Bayern. He's a fine player but my point is that he's not remotely up to say a Matic level etc. which I think Pool really need, a commanding force in the CM.

As for the where was Matic part, pretty irrelevant. He was born there, Emre grew up in Germany so it mostly makes sense that he's playing for German teams. Second of all, Munich had a lovely little buy back clause which they didn't bother activating, strange seeing as they will gladly snap up ANY talent they can, even just to sell on for a higher profit. Finally I believe a former Munich Coach (will look for the actual link now as I can't remember his name) even went on record saying that Can was an okay player but nothing special for Liverpool.

The one with the quote that you are referring to was Jan Aage Fjortoft, a former german pro player commentating for norwegian television. Hes clueless, mind you. And afaik Bayern wanted to buy him back, but couldnt due to a loophole in his contract. And whoever plays regularly for a top 4 team in Germany at the age of 19 has something going for him, atleast thats my take on things.

Obviously you have to be very able but the BL is not necessarily like the PL in any way, shape or form. Can was decent for Bayern, he has two feet and he did a fine job for them. What I am saying is that Pool are in a precarious point, they have to firmly re-establish themselves in the PL and CL. They can't afford to wait for him to come good, they need a big replacement in that CM region as well as letting Can develop.

As for the loophole, the info that I've had is that Bayern orchestrated a deal with a cheap buyback clause, they could have bought him back for nearly half of what Pool paid and they didn't. So I certainly question how desperate they were to have him if he is the next Matic.

And genuinely, this hasn't been me having a shot, he's a grand player. But Liverpool need to make a big push the coming couple of seasons, if they rely solely on him (especially given his propensity for picking up injuries in the PL) it will be a difficult task.

And yea, i think its going to be a grand task for Liverpool to restablish themselves into the top of the bpl regardless. I am however somewhat shocked that with all the players we signed this summer, we pretty much werent linked with a single central midfielder. The only conclusion i can take from this is that BR really believes in Gerrard`s abilities still.

Bayer, not Bayern. Fjortoft is okay, hes opinionated atleast, but hes not very well respected and theres a reason for that.

I think the BL and the BPL are pretty equal in terms of gameplay, both leagues are high intensity and psysical? Im not actually that familiar with the majority of the BL, but this is my impression. I do agree that Liverpool need someone NOW, and not someone in 1-2 seasons or however long it takes Can/anyone else to develop.

Lastly, im not very informed about this loophole so i wont say what went down or not. In either way, not all clubs can pick up all talent. Its just the way things go, maybe Can is one of those that got away, maybe hes not. Only time will tell, and i think ive seen enough that im optimistic for the future.

                      Autocorrect, apologies.

Well he's a sports journo really, he has his biases etc. so there's always going to be those that either like or loathe him.

Different in many ways to be honest with you, from attitudes to styles etc. Remember as well that the BL is pretty much dominated by Munich now, it changes the perspective of things a lot. Furthermore, in terms of physicality, they are different. Look at Can as the prime example. If I am recalling correct, I only remember him picking up 1 injury in total last season while playing for Leverkusen. He's picked up a few more now in the PL.

Essentially this is the crux of my point, Can may or may not develop into a wonder player, I've never personally thought he would but I have been wrong before and will be wrong again I am sure however Liverpool need established talent, really established and experienced to control it all.

As for BR, well I have not always seen eye to eye with his transfer policy. I believe he felt it was a matter of personnel that was causing Liverpool to leak goals when it was actually the system (as well as Stevie unfortunately playing a role he is less suited to). I can't say if he'll remedy it or not, it would be nice if he did.

I have no particular bias towards Fjortoft, hes just pretty meh to me.

Okay, like i said i dont watch too much BL apart from the CL appearances. I dont necessarily think Can`s very injury prone. None of the injuries hes had so far have occured in game, if im correct. Training injuries and on international duty?

I do agree with you on the point that we need quality right now, and not in 1-2-3 years. This is however the way BR likes to work, he wants to develop rather than buy the end product, which actually kind of synergizes with the state of LFC at the moment. As a club that cant really attract the top, top players both from a sporting perspective and wage-wise, buying young/cheap and developing is the way to go for teams like us. This summer we didnt really buy cheap, however, and again, im surprised we never looked at signing established cdm. It would appear BR is having real troubles with the defensive structuring. There were times in his first season at Liverpool where we were REALLY solid at the back. Believe we finished 2nd or tied 1st for clean sheets that season.

I agree with what most of both of you have said, some really great points from both of you.

Where I think I differ is that big money had to be spent on a DM. This is a team that is evolving and growing together, and buying a new DM who would want to play every game wouldn't work because Gerrard is still playing.

As I said above I do think the DM position is one that will be dealt with next summer though when Lucas is likely sold, and with Gerrard taking a slightly less dominant role in the squad.

I'm of the opinion that the team needs time. Thought I have to say the defensive frailties are starting to become a worry. Sakho, Skrtel, Lovren, Toure, etc, are all top quality CB's, but when they play for us they suddenly become pub-league quality. After cycling through those aforementioned 4 along with Coates, Agger, Carragher, etc, and consistently saying the errors are down to individuals, I'm starting to think that its BR's system thats the problem, not the players.

For those of you considering Caulker I would say GW13 onwards is the right time to bring him in. Back in pre-season I warned against picking him to start the year because the quality of our corners and free kicks was so bad.

With Joey Barton taking them all the majority lacked pace, were cleared at the near post by the first defender or floated at the perfect height for the GK. That proved to be the case and Caulker owners were left disappointed at their returns.

Since Vargas has come into the team and taken over corners we've been a much bigger threat. Same goes for FK's with them being shared out depending on the side of the pitch and angle.

Barton may be back but he isn't going to be allowed to do a poor David Beckham impression just to salve his ego, it's been proven week in week out since he was injured that everyone else is better at dead-ball situations!

I think it's only a matter of time before Caulker nods one in. Burnley, Leicester, Swansea and WBA all rank amongst the worse teams at allowing headed goal attempts

What makes you think that Vargas will still be on corners though? If I'm not wrong, didn't Barton take some of the set pieces against City? (Please correct me if I'm wrong)

Excellent piece of information. Was aware of caulker, the poor aerial defences of his opposition, but not the set piece takers, so thank you very much.

      I don't think I can justify chambers>caulker for a hit in gw13 (along with Tadic>Siggy), but chambers>caulker may be my gw15 move

Aside from those 30 minutes against Germany, because he was shit in that Euro as well in every single other match. And don't say he's been good in Italy because he has converted penalties with a ratio slightly better than the average. Or because he has scored a few non-penalty goals too, because his non-penalty goal involvement per 90 minutes has still been very low, and his conversion rate (non-penalty) was somewhere around 6%-8% for his whole stay in Italy, which is worse than piss poor. The fact is, he is not out of form, nor is he not trying enough, he is just not good enough (and he is trying the wrong things because he is a fecking idiot).

                😆 Yeah, the potential.

But joking aside, it was a valid argument when he was 18, and even when he was 21 you could still play that card, and I did use that argument myself to defend Mancini's patience with him at City for the first couple of years. Now he's 24 and has wasted most of his chances to develop. He's arguably worse than he was 6 years ago, and even back then he was not a top level player. He looked like he had the potential to be a top level player, but he has never ever really lived up to that promise. It may be just a question of not doing the right things in practice to become better, because he thinks he's already there, but regardless, that's an important thing that you maybe can't teach him anymore. He may not just have what we thought he has.

Btw, I also do not buy the argument that he is good, but inconsistent, the "two Balotellis" talk. It's just that he 1) hangs in attack to get a lot of chances to shoot (and to not be tired at all when he gets them) and 2) tries those spectacular long shots all the time, so he gets chances to get those spectacular goals, and when he once scores them, he looks amazing - until you realise that in the course of the season he has taken like 40 or 50 shots like that and it's just a matter of time when one of them goes in. Statistically, he is going to succeed at some point, and when it happens it doesn't mean he suddenly is playing better than in other matches.

Population of the Faroe Islands 50,000

    Proportion of males 50%

    Therefore, number of males: 25,000

    Number of males 18-35: 12,500

Number of fit males in that age group: 6,000

Number of fit males 18-35 who are interested in football: 3,000

Number of fit males 18-35 interested in football who have football skills: 1,000

Number of fit males 18-35 interested in football who have football skills who are available (not in jail, the military, on fishing trawlers, etc): 900

Proportion of above who can play at first grade Faroe Islands competition level: 30 per cent, 270

Proportion of above who can play at international level: 5 per cent: fourteen.

Therefore, Greece lost to the only fourteen available Faroe Islands footballers on the planet

Just to play devils advocate, why does everyone consider Azpi at 6.0 to be so much better value than Terry (at season low 6.3) or Cahill 6.5?

For only 0.3 more you could have much greater goal threat along with baps as well. If you believe Chelsea's defense is the way to go then surely Terry warrants some serious consideration?

I also think that once the CL group phase is over we might see Luis get some league action over the hectic Christmas period when there is only one non-league game in December, which makes Azpi a rotation risk.

But despite that Cahill has 5 points more than him... Probably down to the red card to be fair. But my point is that over the season I think Terry will score some goals to more than cancel out azpis baps, and he's 100% nailed on, whereas with Azpi there's always the risk of Luis, however small that may be.

Azpilicueta has the highest BAP potential out of the Chelsea backline purely on defensive performances. 0.3M-0.5M is a lot these days. For example, if I had that money ITB it would be easy for me to do Di Maria>Hazard right now.

Adm and haz cost the same, why do you need money itb?

I'm not saying Azpi is a bad choice, unjust pointing out that 0.3 is a small price to pay to avoid a potential rotation headache coupled with goal threat

Bought ADM really early (sell value 9.7M). And I agree with you, the extra 0.3M is justifiable. Just giving reasons why someone might go with Azpilicueta early.

We can't know for sure what Mourinho has planned. He probably won't want to burn Azpi out, but as you say theres no reason to drop him other than perhaps to rest him for a game here or there.

Azpi is the biggest BPS/min magnet in the whole league.

People are buying Chelsea defenders as they think Chelsea will start to keep more clean sheets. Azpi has got bonus points every time Chelsea have kept a clean sheet this season.

      1. rickardinho
        • 11 Years

Good point. Terry could cancel out the baps difference with just one goal though, and hasn't been far off baps himself

          • 12 Years
          11 years, 1 month ago

Yeah I'm talking about baseline BPS though, which is basically their BPS score after any clean sheet points and attacking returns have been deducted. So if Chelsea keep a clean sheet and none of the defenders get attacking returns then Azpi is the most likely defender to get bonus points.

Understood. I like to look at their total points potential though. All it takes for Terry to get 3baps is a goal and CS, and then he's clearly the better choice again.

In the scenario you describe Azpi is better value though, but I like to choose defenders who can get in the goals rather than relying on CS baps

Yes, of course I was. There was mass hooliganism going on in the stadium and then it spilled out onto the streets a couple of hours after the game in the city centre when everyone had had a few more drinks.

It was the mid 90s and it had potentially huge implications on the ongoing peace process. I don't know what age you are but I'll give the benefit of the doubt and say because you are young that LMFAO is a generic response to something you know nothing about.

Yeah definitely worth it. Basically, you have a bet in the match dead ball (pre kickoff) and they will match your bet with a free in play bet to the same value. The usual way of doing this is to bet on an absolute cert dead ball (like over 0.5 goal or something equally as short priced) and then use your free in play bet to hit something decent.

You basically get a free in play bet of £50 so i like to hit something with big odds 😀

On the subject of Hazard's stats over the past four week (from the last page), I think he has produced just about what his stats suggest he should have produced. He's was a reasonable choice during that period, but the only stand out midfielder was Sanchez.

Gerrard scored only 2 FK's last season iirc (against SUN and hul). The only other non-penalty goal he scored was the header against Everton off a corner.

You can't disregard his pelanties though because he probably won half of them. Whereas some players consistently shoot to score goals, Hazard consistently wins pelanties to score goals.

That's true, but he's the only real source of pens for Chelsea (the others' playing styles are really conducive to winning pens). He has mastered the art of sticking his arse in front of other players so they trip him up.

                A statistical view on Hazard:

Sort by Touches in the Box per minute, and then compare that to his Chances-per-minute and Shots-in-the-box per-minute:
                http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/player-stats/midfielders/kpi-attacking/

Hazard looks to be getting in the box loads, but just isn't shooting. Could it be because of Costa? Hazard used to cut in from the left and drive across the 18 yard box to find space to shoot, but with Costa there he almost always goes down the line instead, or passing it off to Costa, Oscar, or Fabregas. In short, Chelsea seem to be less dependent on him for goals this season (apart from penalties), as Oscar and Costa have become more prolific (shots and goals), and Fabregas has taken over the creative mantle.

I would also recommend looking at Hazard's KPI comparison with last season:
                http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/player-stats/midfielders/kpi-attacking/
His numbers are significantly decreased (or increased very little) in almost all the important areas.

He did look impressive against Liverpool, but as far as his stats are concerned I don't think he's should be scoring significantly higher than he currently is. In summary, his Touches-in-the-box tell one story, but the more important stats like Chances and Shots-in-the-Box tell another.

Stats doesn't reflect a lot on the quality of the player. And in Eden's case, this is very much applicable. For anyone who watched the Liverpool game, you could see he was making a special effort to up his goal threat. It's only the calm before the storm, I'm sure.

Do you have any stats to back this up, or has Mourinho told you this personally? All the stats I've seen suggest the opposite, in fact (see above reply).

Hazard never shoots. In the Liverpool match, he took an abnormal amount of shots. Do the math.

Maybe, maybe, but the stats just don't support the hype. I'm not saying he's a bad choice and I know he has a history of being streaky, but it feels like the community here is whipping itself into a bit of a fervour. So far this year the community has generally got things right (if people waited long enough) but I remain doubtful of Hazard's value at present when there are other good options at similar prices, lower prices or from the same team.

Surprisingly the hits have improved my rank each week & the 1 game week I played it conservatively & only used my ft I actually had a crap week & my rank dropped. I have already done a -4 hit this week & I'm actually considering another couple of hits. I love the trade rage.

Its not hard to pick up that skillset when you've been training with Ashley Young, Januzaj, Valencia, Hernandez, Welbeck, etc, in the last few years...

Lest you forget the master, CR7. It bothers me a little that Rooney doesnt get enough flack for beeing a diver, because hes one of the more consistent ones for me.

Good point. I think every striker does it, but the media seems to only label the foreign and especially South American and Southern Europeans as divers, when Sturridge, Welbeck, Rooney, Young, etc, have dived just as much as any foreign players do.

I think a whole lot of players in the BPL take the occasional dive, and while i dont condone of that behavior, its not something i personally take all that seriously. But the consistent divers, those that always try to influence the referees decisions, and fly under the radar on top of that, those are the ones that really bite my balls. And you have to consider that the South American/Italian/etc players have this attitude from earlier and have to try and get rid of it, the English players really dont have the luxury of that excuse. They grew up in a football culture that expressed hate on those that dove, and they still chose to be "cheaters".

Personally I think diving is the lowest form of cheating and should be punished with suspension, but I do appreciate how difficult it can be to determine what is a dive and what isn't.

I think the most obvious of dives should get punished with a retrospective suspension.. like this one for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCX9Q8e76nA .. or the play-acting like Rivaldo in 2002.

I loathe Rooney. He dives, he complains to the referee after every single decision and is up in his face, he pressures the club with ridicolous demands, seeks transfers. Woeful person.

His England captaincy you can blame Hodgson for, and who really cares about him anyway. Its pretty hilarious that hes United captain though, after him seeking a move away to City, and reports of him asking for guarantees to become club captain in his contract. Not really sure if this is true or not, i do know that anybody that has to claim to be named leader, are not true leaders.

This. I know as football fans in general youre not "supposed" to worry about what football players do when theyre not on the pitch, but hes a lying, cheating scumbag that has a lot of shameful and cynical tendencies. I just dont imagine Wayne Rooney beeing a decent human beeing, and i know thats a pretty big statement.

Sanchez is killing my team at the moment - no Arsenal coverage and Walcott's not only a differential but has points-potential. Cheers mate for the advice.

I just think 9.0m is alot to lay down for a player who might only play 15 minutes, especially when players like Downing, Siggy, Chadli, Sterling, and oscar are all cheaper and nailed-on with decent-to-great fixtures

Get Sanchez. Downgrade to Walcott if needs be later when he's playing consistently.

There are times to be maverick and there are times to be dullard. With Sanchez in the form he is you got to have him. Walcott double up would be a better option and could be a real differential rather than just losing ground on Sanchez points

Cheers lads - if I go for Sanchez I'll likely have to drop Hazard for Oscar. I have Sterling in my wildcard side as I think he will lift off with Sturridge coming back.

As a massive Walcott fanboy, I will echo the others here and only add that an elite OOP midfielder is as good as it gets in FPL. Sanchez is doing what we all dream Theo will do.

re. diving, i'm perfectly fine with it. I reckon it's a bit of an artform. I'm also a fan of the hand of god/frog. If you can pull off the perfect illusion under the gaze of of the ref and his assistants well played i say. If they position themselves right and catch you out and card you well played to them.
It's the acting like they've been shot that i can't stand.

Thats without a doubt the dumbest thing ive ever seen anyone write. Diving has nothing to do with football and it has no place in it. Its like saying that smacking your wife around is an artform and is cool and all just because they do it some places in the world. If you want to act, study acting. Dont play football.

Who cares about polls. City at home scores 3-4+ in 90% of matches, you cant ever say that about Chelsea under Mourinho. Aguero is just vastly superior to Costa, in ability and fpl terms. For me theres no way i would ever consider anyone else than Aguero this gw, if i could have anyone.

Mourinho's tactic of parking the bus at 1-0 or 2-0 is getting worse imo ...They are capable of regular 4-0 or 5-0 drubbings but they don't look like handing many out.

Ofcourse they are capable of beating teams by quite the margin and playing attacking, entertaining football. All it takes is one glance at their teamsheet and youd find 4-5 world class players and the rest are VERY good also. Mourinho just thrives in controlled wins with very little risk. I personally hate this approach to football, but how can you ever argue with what hes accomplished.

You can't..it's absolutely the way to do it. A lot of manager's could do to follow his lead.

I disagree. I think the game of football is meant to entertain, and i like to watch teams that try and attack and entertain. Like i said, i dont approve of his methods, but hes accomplished more than almost anyone. And while i dislike his ways, the most important thing about a game of football is to actually win the game.

From a fans point of view for certain. It's when you see the likes of Liverpool against Palace last season and Arsenal in the CL this season that, from a managers point of view, they need to look to Mourinho's tactics a bit more. No good for us though.

this. Nothing wrong with the defensive approach. Some of my favourite recent games were the mourinho v benitez tactical battles. Different kind of exciting.

I too can find excitement in defensive games. Like, the best game i think i saw all of last season was Chelsea`s 1-0 victory over City at the Ethihad. I think that was the most flawless single game performance in Europe all over. But from a somewhat neutral point of view (but not really though), i`d much rather watch a 3-3 frenzy than the zzzzzzzzz Mourinho football. However im pretty sure every fan would be happy if Mourinho coached the team you support, just because you know hes just great. You know hes just going to deliver, always.

yes but maybe more of the blame for a boring chelsea game should be directed at the opposition. After all if they can counter chelsea's tactics the game wouldn't be boring.

The only way to counter a tactic that involves keeping everyone back and never attacking with more than 2 or 3 people is to do the exact same thing yourself.
