Having previously assessed the form of forwards and midfielders across the last four Gameweeks, our third Key Performance Indicator (KPI) article of the international break casts an eye over the defenders.

For the unfamiliar, these Key Performers Indicator (KPI) tables use a series of key stats to allow our members to track a trend in player performance as a guide to their form. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics, such as minutes per chance, and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain patterns of improvement or decline in these areas. For those unfamiliar, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

Long and possibly pointless post coming.

Okay, someone made a post yesterday wondering if Lescott would be able to muscle Costa about in the same way Skrtel and Dunne did to good effect recently and it got me to thinking how much Costa relies on his strength to bully the opposition. Costa is 6ft 2” around 85kg. He’s a big guy. Most of the CB’s I’ve looked at are a similar size and build if a bit lighter, around 6ft 2” 82kg.

Looking at the Liverpool game, Costa and Skrtel had a hard fought physical battle. Skrtel is slightly taller at 6ft 3” but a bit lighter at 81kg. He did reasonably well against Costa, Costa’s goal coming from a deflected cross into his path had little to do with physicality and more to do with Costa’s predatory instincts.

Costa was kept noticeably quiet against QPR, where it was also noted that Richard Dunne ‘did a job on him’. Richard Dunne is again 6ft 2” but intriguingly a bit stockier than Costa and quite a bit heavier than Skrtel at 88kg. It seems there could be an argument made that Costa played right into his hands if he was trying to outmuscle Richard Dunne.

Looking further back in the weeks where Costa really came to the fore bagging a brace and then a hat trick, it is interesting to see that in both these games, the CB’s were significantly smaller and lighter than Costa. I looked at the goals, and while most were from fluid play, great passing and finishing from Fabregas and Costa, there was a case in each game of Costa shrugging off the CB to power home a header.

Jordi Amat is 6ft 78Kg replaced by Fernandez, 6ft 2” 81kg in the game where Costa bagged a hat trick. Jagielka is also 6ft , 83kg up against Costa where he bags a brace.

In short, it seems kinda obvious. Big Striker does well against small Centre Backs from set piece situations. Stop the presses! 😆 And in truth I haven’t done much research on this, as there are a lot of other external factors. The quality of the CB’s, the fact that Costa scores plenty from open play etc. but I think it is worth noting especially when considering putting the armband on him that Costa’s physicality was a factor in each of the times he scored a big haul and could well be a factor again.

And for reference, West Broms CB paring is Lescott 6ft 2” 82kg, Dawson 6ft 2” 85kg. All height and weight I just googled so don’t shoot me if I’m wrong 😀

not pointless. In fact it's pointmore (that's a word from now on)

That all makes sense but the QPR and Liverpool games were away and Chelsea were playing counter attack , at home they will control and dominate and Costa will get much more opportunities and being such a predator I think he will Bury at least 2

Agüero (c) on volume of shots on target.

I'm thinking , league leaders at home , attacking philosophy, Costa spearhead of attack clinical finisher, will do better than City in bad form away to defensively solid Swans and Aguero has been wasteful

Just flicked back a few pages and read Bsloebadgers post about Costa vs fatter CB's which I thought was excellent and exactly the sort of thing that makes FFS the home of FFSers. (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/11/19/kpi-analysis-defenders-last-four-gameweeks/?hc_page=7#hc_comment_8853540).

To build on that priceless and mathematically-apt piece of analysis it I decided to look at how heavy around the waist CB's are in games coming up after WBA as well. Also, for any yanks out there be reminded that your system of measurement is ridiculous, and I've used meters purposefully to confuse you 😀

          WBA:
          Lescott 1.89m 82kg
          Dawson 1.88m 85kg

          SUN:
          O'Shea 1.91m 75kg
          Brown 1.85m 77kg

          TOT:
          Kaboul: 1.90m 87kg
          Vertonghen 1.89m 79kg
          Fazio 1.90m 90kg

          NEW:
          Coloccini 1.84m 84kg
          Taylor: 1.86m 91kg
          Williamson 1.94m 94kg

          HUL:
          Dawson 1.89m 79kg
          Davies 1.88m 76kg
          Chester : 1.77m 75kg

Looking at those numbers, I'd say Sunderland and Hull's nutritionist has done the best job of keeping his clients slim and ready to be pushed around by Costa. That being the case, hopefully he gets that 5th YC vs WBA 😉

Haha, it wasn't my theory so I'm not sure I completely agree with it, but it is funny to consider anyhow given the Dunne/Skrtel examples Bsloebadger gave. Skrtel had Costa in his pocket in the Slovakia-Spain game as well (which Slovakia won 2-1), so it was hardly a one-off. Might be something in this... though I suspect Spurs might need a couple of sumo wrestling champions at CB if they are to stand a chance the way they're playing! 😉

I think it has more to do with Costa on the road to regaining form and sharpness than anything else. Looking at the teams he did well against, there ain't a huge difference in size between the CBs.

A couple of inches and a bit if extra girth surely can't make that much of a difference, can it ? 😀

Yeah. Its a tough call to leave him out tbh.

But going by the stats his ppg for me was no better than Mata or Ramsey early season. Both a good bit cheaper and I didn't bat an eye losing either of them. Different with ADM.

If I could have him for Downing through some freaking of value I'd be laughing lol

Hey guys, with all the talk about which Chelsea defender to get, I've gone and worked out the up-to-date baseline BPS/min for their back 4.

          Azpilicueta = 0.190
          Terry = 0.163
          Ivanovic = 0.151
          Cahill = 0.148

Very little has changed - Azpi is still the BPS magnet he was earlier in the season. He has received bonus points in every match this season where Chelsea have kept a clean sheet - that's a real eye-opening statistic imo and this data just highlights his value. He's clearly the boring pick but sometimes boring is the right pick, and this looks like one of those occasions.

A weird one this but its for a free trade in my draft league. Which of these do you think is most likely to be snapped up if I take out Adebayor.....Caulker, Naylor or Montero? I know they're different positions but I can only bring in one this week and two the next.

I think it's kinda tough to find clean sheets so far. I would always feel comfortable that Chelsea have a chance to keep a clean sheet regardless of opposition. Can't say the same thing about any other team in the Prem.

They're no more likely to keep cleanies than we are. Saints are much better defensively and are the only impressive defense in the Prem for me this season.

Chelsea have pretty much the same exact defensive stats as they did last year to date in all areas besides clean sheets. They have had lost three clean sheets by conceding to 10 men and twice conceding in stoppage time. I know clean sheets are all we care about, but the underlying defensive stats are there for them. They have a good run of fixtures coming up, and as the fixtures pile up they are a good bet in my opinion to tighten up. Just as they did last season.

Despite the shocker to Leicester, which I might add was very controversial, we've only let in three more than Chelsea. Circumstances don't really matter but if you do want to look at them there's a definite case for us rather than Chelsea.

The fact is the only similarity that utd and chelsea has this season is the number of cs they each kept. And despite 3cs chelsea gets 13pts more than utd in just 11 games 😀

Chelsea got few clean sheets at the start of last year two it seems before tightening up. Looks to be going the same way.

Honestly I dont think Chelsea need an excuse. They clearly dont care all that much. They're top of the league. But I think they will start to turn the screw now.

I think that this season there are vast pockets of fixture that suit teams in each one, this pocket until January really bodes extremely well for Chelsea. In tandem both the attack & offense.

If players were doubling up on Saints D the last pocket (which brought many a great reward), as well as the Everton + Coleman double up. Surely Chelsea & Mourinho's history of tightening it up at the back will reward us now, no? Cahill has been steadily improving since the beginning of the season & Terry also has shown more grit & hunger for goal.

Now that we have more TV & the ability to invest in 2 or even three (Inssie 😉 ] big hitter in the back w/ ease, Chelsea (& of course Baines) should be on the top of your defensive draft picks.

History tends to repeats itself & Mourinho's pretty tight 😉

Do you really? I can see the logic behind that, & that's definitely what Mou opts for.
Yes, they are more likely I agree, but surely they'll hold their core vs the weaker teams too, no?

There's a difference between a tight defence and a clean sheet. Chelsea rarely give up chances. Liverpool scored from a defelction. United got a last ditch equaliser. Im not saying they don't concede but Im saying they have more potential than others when they tighten up.

Here's some evidence of my plan working:

Using fpl statistico, I can see that I've benched the following players, and their respective points total the GW(s) they were benched:

                Fabregas - 2
                Tadic - 1
                Siggy(x2) - 5
                Downing - 2
                Naismith - 6
                Davis - 1
                Bojan - 1
Oscar (x2) - 11 (one of these times was by accident though as my team picks didn't save when i was out travelling, when he got 10 vs QPR, so doesn't count really).. so 1.
                Costa - 0 (injured so auto-subbed).

As such, out of my 10 benchings (ignoring the accidental oscar one), I've only lost 19 points by avoiding bad fixtures, while my other fwd's have scored better.

Of course there's also price considerations when money is locked into your bench, but with so many good budget options this year I don't think its a big factor at all.

Hah, that's the one. I'm not just trolling, I like your posts on here, but people in general on here (and in many walks of life) seem to put way too much emphasis on short term results. There is a HUGE luck factor in FF. Getting Austin in over Sakho may well have been the best move, but that's not a given. What if Sakho hadn't picked up another knock this week? What if he recovers for next week and scores in the next 3? Tough to say.

That Sakho news is a kick in the balls.

May end up fielding 10 this week.

I've never played a WC at such a short notice, but just too many injuries.
Will need you lot to help me here, so that I can do it well.

          My first stab looks like.

          Adrian, Jakupovic,
          Chambers, Taylor, Dummett, Hutton, Suk-Young,
          ADM, Hazard, Sanchez, Sigurdsson, Boyd,
          Aguero, Costa, Austin.

          0.0 ITB.

Hazard not really earning his 10.0 price tag is he?

Think Austin might be a bit of a flash in the pan.

You can't rely only on cheap options...you need someone better than Chambers who doesn't even have great fixtures. You should downgrade one between Hazard and ADM and upgrade Chambers at least.

            Shaw - likely to play
            DDG - likely to play
