Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud continue their fine form as Arsenal hammer Villa at the Emirates. Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott also get amongst the goals as the Gunners recover from the loss of Alexis Sanchez to injury. Jonjo Shelvey fires Swansea to victory at St Mary’s, while Ryan Bertrand’s dismissal earns the left-back a three-match ban.

Gunners Attack in the Points

Despite the absence of star player Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal registered their most emphatic win of the season against a toothless Aston Villa yesterday afternoon. The Gunners’ strength in depth was in evidence as Arsene Wenger handed Mesut Ozil his first start since Gameweek 7 on the left, whilst Theo Walcott was named in the first XI for the first time this season after building up his fitness with a handful of sub appearances.

Both bagged a goal apiece, with the German also serving up an assist, as Arsenal’s main men ran riot. Olivier Giroud replicated Ozil’s returns and now has five goals and an assist in his last six league appearances, whilst Santi Cazorla turned in yet another superb showing and delivered a goal, two assists and maximum bonus, with his growing band of owners treated to a 17-point haul.

Post-match, Wenger conceded Sanchez was ”not very close” after failing a fitness test yesterday but with a trip to London neighbours Spurs next weekend, the Chilean will surely return to the XI if he can prove his fitness in time.

Bellerin Stakes a Claim

After dropping to the bench for last weekend’s FA Cup win over Brighton, the youngster replaced Calum Chambers to earn his third successive league start. With Mathieu Debuchy sidelined for months, Bellerin’s last-minute goal merely heightened his chances of remaining ahead of Chambers in the right-back pecking order, with a bargain-basement 4.4 price tag set to spark the bandwagon into life. Arsenal have now registered a shut-out in all three outings since Wenger opted to hand Bellerin and David Ospina (4.8) starting roles and with showdowns against Leicester, Palace, Everton and QPR following their trip to White Hart Lane, they continue to look a likely source of clean sheets.

Bertrand Set for Suspension

The Southampton left-back’s second-half dismissal for violent conduct is set to kick the transfer market into overdrive this week. Bertrand – just like Chelsea’s Diego Costa – was the most popular player in his classification in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and sat in over 31% of teams prior to his red card. He’ll now miss the upcoming league clashes against QPR, West Ham and Liverpool before returning in time to face West Brom in Gameweek 27 but bearing in mind the on-loan defender cannot play against parent club Chelsea in Gameweek 29, this means he’s available for just two of the next six rounds of fixtures. Ronald Koeman may well turn to youngster Matt Targett – at just 3.9 in FPL – as a replacement for Bertrand in light of yesterday’s events.

Shelvey Shocks St Mary’s

An under-strength Swansea defied the odds to end Southampton’s six-match unbeaten run yesterday. With Gylfi Sigurdsson serving the first of a three-match ban, Garry Monk’s decision to hand Jonjo Shelvey the support role behind Bafetimbi Gomis paid off after the midfielder’s long-range effort sealed the points. Available for 5.2, Shelvey looks likely to retain the role for back-to-back clashes with Sunderland and West Brom, though with new boy Jack Cork and Ki Sung-yeung available from next week and Sigurdsson returning in Gameweek 26, Shelvey’s acquisition looks no more than a short-term punt. At the back, Kyle Naughton helped his new side to a ninth clean sheet of the season in his first start and, at 4.3, could be worth considering ahead of those aforementioned fixtures.

Bony Fires Ivory Coast into Last Four

City’s new striker bagged a brace as Ivory Coast overcame Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final last night. The 3-1 win means Bony, along with Yaya Toure, Kolo Toure and Cheick Tiote will square up to Yannick Bolasie’s DR Congo on Wednesday evening, and with the third/fourth place play-off and final taking place on Saturday and Sunday, all five are essentially ruled out of this weekend’s Gameweek 24 schedule. Bearing in mind Gameweek 25 takes place over Tuesday and Wednesday next week, it remains to be seen if they’ll be back in time and fully recovered to participate.

Last night’s result means Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez and Tottenham’s Nabil Bentaleb look set to return for domestic duties next weekend as a result of Algeria’s elimination. Mahrez’ return, in particular, looks key here – the 4.9-priced wide man managed a goal and two assists in his last three appearances prior to heading off on international duties.

Not impossible - never say never! I'm hanging on in there somehow but every week feels trickier to maintain rank, already regretting holding Sanchez on my wildcard instead of trading for Walcott/Cazorla.

There's little point in trying to second guess Wenger. He might be badly injured, or the hamstring was just used as an excuse to rest him. Only a few select people know for sure.

Anyone fancy a moan? Got so many 'either-or' type decisions wrong on WC.

Walters or Moses - Went with the more risky Moses (-18)
Kosc or Bellerin - Went with the more safe Kosc (-6)
Walcott or Santi - Went with more risky Walcott (-9)

Hindsight is a fine thing but I genuinely wrestled with those 3 decisions last week on numerous occasions and could have scored 114 had I went the other way. Hard to stomach.

I know, "short termism" isn't very productive. I have Walcott > Sanchez pencilled in for my FT this week though so he probably won't have an opportunity to readdress the balance.

      1. @ImpressiveTackl
        • 15 Years
        11 years, 3 months ago

Yeah but it's impossible at the time to know where to take the safe decision and where to punt. Look at Kosc over Bellerin, I went safe there and it cost me 6 points.

I'm not really bothered by that though I must admit, I think I am being blinded by the Moses over Walters one. It's an incredible chasm for what seemed essentially a 50/50 choice.

I went Moses over Walters too which is painful - on a marginal call such as that for it to cost you 18 points in a single week is simply absurd. Just have to hope Moses outscores him for the next few. I also went without Cazorla.

Not going to complain though, I've fluked enough marginal decisions the right way this season too.

Thanks for the vote and sorry for the lost 3pts. However, if you followed the method I used for the rotation assessment you need to sign up as a member and look at the FFS fixture ticker. Hull away is better CS potential than Burnley at home. I always forget to do this myself!

Another week or two more out and Cazorla may outscore him for the rest of the season. Let alone Cazorla + 3m invested in other parts of your team.

High ownership means slower dropping, doesn't it, as the dropping/rising limits are related to the ownership.

Not if the player is above original value - then they fall/rise at the same threshold. x2.5 in Berty's case, as he's red flagged.

  25. Southampton's Midfield Selection Headache
    Lucy.
    • 12 Years
    11 years, 3 months ago

For those who were asking last night about Saints' selection policy in midfield (now players are coming back from injury and international duty), I think it goes as follows:

Wanyama is having a great season, I expect him to be more or less nailed on.
Schneiderlin is probably the best CM/DM outside the traditional top 4 so he's nailed on.

Davis is highly thought of by Koeman (experience, great vision) but JWP is definitely seen as a great prospect (set pieces and good passing) - I think it's one of those two to play as the most forward central midfield player, though JWP does have the flexibility to play as the wide right player to accommodate someone like Mané as a No. 10 (why this might be advantageous will be seen below)

That leaves two places for Tadic, Elia and Mané - I think playing all three would leave Koeman too exposed and Koeman loves a solid defence above anything else, as reflected in most of our defensive performances this season. And I think selection of those more forward-thinking, risky options will purely depend on form at the time.

Tadic looked ok in the first half yesterday, linking up with Clyne, but faded fast in the second half. Mané gave us a better threat for goal and may be preferred as the goals have dried up for Pelle - runs from Mané may be exactly what's needed to spark Pelle into action.

Was that helpful? No. Because it's all very, very tight. If you're keen on getting a Saints midfielder, I'd wait to see how the dust settles. I'd also wait to see how Schneiderlin and Wanyama affect our performances - based on the last couple of games, there's not much to want but Schneiderlin should get us ticking again.

Defensively - Wanyama should have a massive impact. I don't believe Shelvey would have scored that goal yesterday because Wanyama would have hunted him down as a natural DM. Unfortunately for us yesterday, that kind of role does not come naturally to Davis.

          • 12 Years

From what I've heard, Vilhena probably isn't ready for first team football. And I think Djuricic is also sought for squad depth - Koeman mentioned how he was a fan because Djuricic was able to play a number of positions - that implies cover to me.

Not interested on taking any of the Saint's midfielder.

But what I'm interested on is how Wanyama and Schneiderlin's presence and absence more importantly has affected Clyne's defensive and offensive output, so thanks for throwing light on that (not the later though, but no problem).
