@Balders: Following our discussion last page regarding Ighalo's value vs Kane/Lukku.

That may be true about Kane's xG, I don't dispute he's still under performing relative to his xG, but I still don't think it's large enough of a discrepancy between the two warrant nearly 4.0m more IMO. You can take captaincy into account perhaps, but I'm not sure there's much for this argument now with Agüero in the equation as Kane's best fixtures on paper in the next six also coincide with ideal fixtures for both Agüero & Kane.

If you were to analyze this from a very bare-bones xG perspective, to point toward regression & under performance: Lukaku (total xG = 4.8, total goals = 6.00), Kane (total xG = 5.78, total goals = 4.00), Ighalo (total xG = 3.20, total goals = 7.00). Perhaps a fairer comparison can be drawn between Lukaku & Ighalo, is there really that much a difference of xG here to really warrant an extra 3.0m? I don't think so, Ighalo's still taking quality poacher's shots in the box & has good accuracy to boot., he has great positioning & awareness.

In terms of points per million, I just can't see how Lukaku & to a lesser extent Kane, provide that much more. Now with Agüero back in the mix, I think value takes more precedence. Unless you're expecting double-digit hauls from both (which Ighalo is also capable of), considering the fixtures (lei, MUN, avl, NOR, sun, LIV, che), I just can't look past Ighalo's value tbh.

Ighalo is the best value attacker in the game imo, and once Kun is back I am planning to get him in.

      • 12 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

      Hi Zasa,

You're right Lukaku's xG is much more comparable but I think Everton's fixtures warrant it especially as I am looking to captain him in gameweeks 13 (AVL) and 17 (LEI) especially as City have LIV and ars in those two games.

It is very close I'll admit and in my blog I do point to Kane -> Ighalo/Murray as an escape route if I don't ditch KdB. Time will tell I guess. I look forward to comparing our teams after your WC 🙂

For sure, Everton look alright offensively & if Deulofeu continues to stay in the XI, I think I may prefer him as my Mahrez replacement. When he's started since Gw7 (four out of five matches), Everton have scored 10 goals & he's contributed to 6 of them compared to Lukaku's 7.

        Same here 😉

I completely agree with everything you've said Zasa. I think people don't fancy Ighalo cause of the mere fact that they don't fancy Watford's attack. Its all about Ighalo tbh and to an extent, Deeney.

It's not pleasing to the eye, but he does get those points, I ditched him 2 weeks back even though I knew he is the best value in the game. Planning to get him back when Aguero's all good to go.

Would you still be so hot on Ighalo if he'd scored 3 goals as expected? His goal involvement for them is 100% which is extremely unsustainable and Watford have (one of) the lowest xG in the league so even with good fixtures coming up he isn't going to do that much imo. However, at the moment you won't find a better value player but don't be surprised if he blanks 5/6 games in a row.

        • 14 Years

Not as unsustainable as you might think. The way we play is to feed the strikers - if you look at the stats for last year, Vydra, Deeney and Ighalo scored/assisted the vast, vast majority of goals (obviously only two could play at a time).

As for the blanking thing, obviously I'm biased, but as I'm sure you know, his record since he got a starting role in November last year is basically a goal a game.

Fair enough. I'm just trying to add some balance to Zasa's argument. Even Austin's goal involvement was only around 60% last year so if he has that kind of impact to Watford his involvement is still going to drop. I'm not saying that he's a bad pick in any way.

          1. Give The Todd Some Love
            • 14 Years

Yeah 100% involvement is pretty absurd.

For what it's worth, I do expect us to score more goals in the coming games. I was really worried after the first 7/8 games that we barely looked like getting a shot on target, but during the Arsenal game there seemed to be a big change. Players are starting to get used to the system, and while the stats don't reflect it, the way the team have been playing I'd feel pretty confident about scoring against just about anyone.

        2. Zasa
          • 11 Years

          This.

Fair points, Mull. I'm looking at him until Gw17/18 when his fixtures turn sour, so maybe then he'll start blanking consecutive games in a row. Until then, apart from his goal involvement stat, his underlying stats are still strong. Comparing him to Lukaku, he has more chances created & shots in the box in the last six. In terns of overall team goal threat, Watford are about even with Everton's in most areas. At 5.5, I can't fault him tbh. Strong upcoming attacking fixtures for Watford should do wonders for their xG, especially being high on confidence having beaten Hammers 2-0.

This xG map really boosts Watford's prospects imo, https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CSqcBJMWoAAWiPa.png:large

Genuinely should have scored 4 or 5.

If Deeney gets his shooting boots on soon he might become an option, could have had a few on Saturday.

                Just relax its long season
No one can play every game

                  Yes, I do....

Anyway, Lingard is a first team player for now. And CSKA won't have any threat on United in this group. PSV and Wolfsburg are are bigger contenders.

KDB played the Norwich game, he didn't have to play that game AND he got hauled off early.

Incredible save, De Gea is the best in the world (or top 2 depending on your mood):

For the follow up he should have squared it to his teammate though. Although Smalling came running in like a champion, it would have hit Young anyway

yep agreed, though maybe whatever option he saw out of his peripheral before taking the shot "wasn't there" as Smalling covered a ton of ground in no time:

United fan alert! Neuer is streaks ahead fully deserved 3rd in the Ballon D'or last year. He has dimensions to his game 99% of keepers don't even think about. As a keeper that Guardiola thinks could play as a midfielder in Bundesliga 3, that's just mind blowing. But yes very nice save 🙂

yes streaks ahead. He's a libero first and a keeper second and does both jobs to incredible levels.

This'll give a nice run down of just how good he is at the libero role and how important it is for Bayern and Germany:

As for best keeper in the world? He's not even near best in the premiership. He has raw talent that still needs to be refined. Cech and Lloris much more intelligent keepers imo

Disagree. But to each their own. 🙂

The only keeper in the Premier League that contests DDG for best is Courtois, Cech just behind the pair and Lloris behind the trio.

Don't underestimate Pulis' exaggerated bus away from home as his better away record has shown. Four CS away (wat, stk, avl, nor) with a perfect record thus far vs at home with two CS's (SOU, SUN) & conceding 14 from 6 games. Granted context is needed hiving faced (MCI, CHE, SOU, EVE, SUN, LEI) in those homers, though nevertheless, their away record last year with Puls was also very impressive, ManUnited's attack is also one of the least creative in the league - Sunderland (74), Aston Villa (80), Man United (81), Stoke (82), West Brom (83).

If you want to have a play around go to "File" -> "Make a copy...". This will make your own copy in your google drive that you can then edit.

Before his 5-goal haul in GW8, many of the top 10k at that time did not own him.

If his injury had occurred just one week earlier, the rankings would look very different from how they do now.

Not rushing to get him back is a definite option, though not without a certain amount of risk.

But not as much as Suarez, who really was essential.

Even when one player becomes essential, we still have to find another 14 players to complete our squads, so there ought to be plenty of scope for a certain amount of variety.

I'm not completely convinced that either Aguero or Sanchez is completely essential. There are alternatives to Sanchez in the Arsenal attack such as Ozil and Giroud. And Aguero is both expensive, injury-prone and not returning at Suarez's level.

Those who bought Aguero late and captained him in GW8 did very well, but those who captained him every GW from the start did not, although his haul in GW8 did partially make up for his earlier failures. Even if he returns to his best form and fitness, he isn't necessarily going to be the best captain choice every week - there are plenty of alternatives to take the armband when they have favourable fixtures.

Yeah but he'd be not much good to you now. He'd have been back to being in every team and captained in every team every week....He's only good for a couple of games until his ownership shoots through the roof.

It doesn't matter that everyone jumps on the bandwagon after the big haul.

The advantage of pre-empting the bandwagon should be a sufficient reward.

But by the same reasoning when he's not in the game he makes it more challenging...and feasible....to get picks right from right across the board....

I'm not arguing that he isn't the best pick...what I'm arguing is that the FPL game is better without him.

And especially within the FFS community...where just about every single team will have him....

Certainly the 5 a side tournament will be a lot better without him...

The game's a lot better with him.

It causes a big differential between those who are desperately trying to fit him in and those (like Mark) who might risk trying to manage without him. Also between those who are keeping money in hand to facilitate his return and those who are spreading the cash around now and leaving the problem of how to fit him in till later.

It is more interesting when we have a number of different strategies to choose between and do not all feel obliged to converge on the same template.

Ighalo's a thing of beauty. Watford have scored 9 goals while Ighalo's been on the pitch, notching in 7 goals & 2 assists. That's 100% contribution to goals, talk about impact 8O. He also boasts a very healthy conversion rate

    20% conversion rate: 7g/35 shots
    54% Sh%: 7g/13SoT

His xG from Paul Riley's table is a great watch, look at those shots in the box. Marvellous - https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CS51yqPXIAEXVdZ.jpg:large

Some tables for the up-sell - sort by shots in the box, http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/939/

Vs one of the worst defenses in the league (lei), http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/6810/ - sort by headed goal attempts conceded, aerial duels lost & goal attempts in box conceded.

...& he's only 5.5. Upcoming fixtures (lei, MUN, avl, NOR, sun, LIV, che). C'mon lads, where's the love? He's way more deserving of love than what the false prophet Martial Farts ever got.

My plan was that Vardy would obviously dry up and Vardy to Ighalo would happen. Just cant do it now!

      Aguero Lukaku Ighalo

Don't think so Baldy, he's 5.5 & I think he'll get similar returns to whatever Kane/Lukaku produce tbh. I can't see the value or that big of a point swing in that front three IMO. Though what does sway me with that frontline is the matter that they're all arguably the best attacking assets with the most reliable source of points from their respective teams tbh.

              • 12 Years
              10 years, 1 month ago

I think it will be worth the value to be honest, his xG per 90 is a definite step 90 from the others I looked at last week and he's also yet to serve up any big chances for Troy Deeney whereas Lukaku and Kane have been able to serve up big chances to Kone and Lamela/Dembele on occasion. Also does it not worry you that every single danger zone SoT has been converted by Ighalo so far? A keepers got to get a glove on it more often in the future.

Anyone who does the Bet365 inplay offers.

Bet £50 prematch get £50 bet inplay.

Bellerin is in the listing for first goalscorer he is as we know out and won't play your £50 pre match will be refunded as a non runner. And you'll get the £50 in play as a no lose shot to nothing.

    1. ash and swanson inc

It is the in-play bet that gets refunded if it fails - value is up to initial prematch bet! (I think anyway) - from their email today:

Place a pre-match bet on the Bayern Munich v Arsenal game and we'll give you a risk free In-Play bet to the same stake (up to £50) on the big match. T&Cs apply.

To qualify for your risk free In-Play bet, simply place a bet before kick-off then, once the game starts, place another bet on any In-Play market. If your FIRST In-Play bet loses we will refund this stake, up to the same value as your largest pre-match bet (max refund £50). Where more than one In-Play selection is placed on the same bet slip, the risk free bet will be deemed to be the one which is first on the bet slip.

Both would get refunding in this case. The Bellerin bet is like a normal void bet, but it activates the in-play bet. No risk as Tony says

        I know that.

But backing Bellerin prematch activates the free bet. And Bellerin is no lose unlike other things people will back to activate the free bet.

wow. Yeah, that'd be nice. I usually just cover the 0-0 offsite to guarantee the money back, and pick something out that I fancy in running.

But I'm not feeling very inspired this time and some think the game will be tight. Here's one such preview: http://www.goonersguide.com/football-pick-27366-Bayern-Munich-v-Arsenal.htm
