The curtailed Gameweek 35 concludes at Goodison Park tonight as Everton host Newcastle United in a fixture that has all the makings of a dead rubber.

The two teams are now surely safe from the threat of relegation and appear to be playing for Premier League prize money only over the remaining matches.

But from a Fantasy perspective, there is still interest in the Merseyside clash, with Free Hit managers investing in the likes of Jordan Pickford, Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman in their one-week refresh.

All start for the home side tonight.

Meanwhile, those without the chip at their disposal, likely take Magpies assets into this match, with Ayoze Perez, Kenedy and budget defender Paul Dummett among the most likely to feature in squads.

Indeed, Perez is the most signed player on show tonight, having commanded over 133,000+ transfers in ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

That follows a rich vein of form from the Spaniard which has produced three goals and three two assists from his last three Gameweek starts.

Perez sits behind Islam Slimani in the attack tonight, with the Algerian starting a Premier League match for Newcastle for the first time since his loan move from Leicester City.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

18K GW Rank. 😯 No FH ... just good planning.

I do think there is merit to this strategy for next season https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/03/23/an-alternative-strategy-for-the-doubles/

Treat the free hit as a third Wildcard. Don't use it in a gameweek with just 5 fixtures. Use it in a double with 15 plus fixtures. Much more potential that way.

One way to look at it.
However, GW25 when I started planning for GW31 BGW I was over 90,000 places behind you.
As of now I'm about 50,000 ahead of you with my flawed GW32 WC 34BB 35FH 37TC approach.

I've heard you bleat on and on about this for weeks now.
      Time to cut the bullshit.

Different strategies work for different people. I've gone with the 34 FH, 36 WC and 37 BB. The 34 FH worked beautifully for me, and my 35 team had 11 players who got me 57 points.

Currently 900 in the world, with my wildcard and bench boost left. I'm pretty sure bench boost is worth more than TC, so this leaves me in a far stronger place than most of my rivals.

"..just good planning" What a joke - still having Walcott is 'good planning'? He happily accepts Wally's points from only the second match all season that he's scored, while bagging out Smalling owners last GW as being 'lucky'.

        Free hit mostly a flop
Welbeck / Ozil instead of Lacazette for Arsenal coverage - Welbeck nearly scored but for Joe Hart's fingers, Ozil no show

        Sane no show

Smooth: Got a greenie with no FH and 10 men playing including Hegazi and Fernandez who I had written off.

Rough: When my captain Sterling bought the Man City pen I thought I'd hit jackpot with my diff Gundogan ready to slot it home for an 11 point goal (probably would have meant Sterling 3 BAPS x 2 as well). Up steps Jesus - oh well at least I have him too....

Just smooth this week for me - got 79 points and a 4740 GW rank, my best ever.

        Smooth:
        - Initially, I had Butland as keeper and Robertson in defence, but due to the leaked Liverpool line-up I changed Robertson to Milner, which meant that I reluctantly had to change Butland to Hennessey. I wasn't happy about this change but got very lucky in that it got me 5 points.
        - Wenger's comments allowed FHers to select Lacazette over Aubameyang, getting a 9 point profit.
        - Somehow avoided all City rotation by picking Jesus, Sterling and KDB, who returned 26 points (and would've been 6-11 more if Jesus had made the penalty).

Really great week and the FH is a fun chip, big fan. Everything really fell into place for the FHers this week with Wenger's presser and the Liverpool leak.

Rougher than GreenWindmill - VVD, Wood, Mane and Milivojevic all blanked, and Tomkins stayed on the bench. ðŸ™

Seriously though, it was my smoothest game-week of the season by some distance. 😀
Free Hit played, Sterling captained, and Monreal autosubbed in to replace Otamendi.
82 points, GW rank 2154 and shot up 99k places from 189k to 90k.

rough: overthought things. At last minute wanted differentials so went Fermenia & Auba over Baines & Laca. Went 2 OOP defenders - didn't work. Convinced myself Laca wouldn't play 60 minutes due to Europe and Auba would make an impact coming on - so 50% right !!
Those extra pts cost me getting into top 20.

smooth: still 60 pts. amazingly ML rivals also stuck with Auba so not so much damage. still top 50 OR

Rough: Bellerin over Monreal, tried to be clever and not go with the crowd on Auba/Laca so brought in Ozil and Tosun to avoid the situation, you never know my beloved West Ham might do me a favour. That went well...
Smooth: 71 FH points, best GW rank all season and gone from second in my League to 44 points clear and joining the 100k club may still be a possiblity!

Any Fabianski owners out there? Make yourself known.

Points haul from a goalkeeper in a 5-0 defeat against the best side in the league surely is the Sade of Smoothosity.

Fabianski, Jesus (c) and Sterling owner....
            Went through all the emotions:
Hope he saves it from Gundogan, if not get Sterling assist
Hear Jesus is taking it, hope he scores for +8 and +3
            Jesus misses, -11 -2 +3 but +6 for Fabianski
Jesus then does eventually score +8
Fabianski ends up on two bonus!

In the end it turned out better. Also it's the first ever penalty save I've had in the game when he was on for getting 1 or 2, always missed the others, including taking out Pope before Newcastle away this season.

          Joy, at last.

Two of my FH big hitters - Ozil and Sane - didn't play. So I got Ings & Tomkins points off the bench.

Baines, Lacazette & Monreal proved lovely FH differentials. Sterling and Jesus (c) worked out nicely.

82 points, best GW rank of the season, halved my overall rank. FH in 35 gameplan worked out well. All in all, very smooth.

Smooth. Cap $terling as Rambo only better scored this gw in my FHTeam and glad I played David Silva over KDB and doubled CS from Baines and Coleman.
Rough. Benched Michael Keane and played VVD + Got Wellbeck and Ozil insted of Laca and Arnie as I planed all week, bur Wenger's trap got me and finnished with Welbz upfront along with Jesus and Deeney who entered on Ozil place.
82 pts at the end guaranteed my ML mini award for April, so FH chip did some great job for me after BB last week!

          Ashley Barnes.

Had him since I wildcarded in 32, he’s played once for me so far (DG34 bench boost) and has scored when I’ve benched him each time.

Now he’s under probation whether he plays ahead of Gross.

Rough: My only blankers were Mane, Klavan and Bellerin.

Rough: Moreno 0 pointer. Most of the targets I want all rising and being unable to do anything because of FH.

Rough: no FH and poor planning meant only 8 players even after taking a 12-pt hit (inc. Otamendi)

Smooth: other 3 transfers in did well - Salah (c), Sterling and Jesus, + Barnes and Mariappa.
49 (-12) and only dropped 12k, damage limitation vs FHs, and team well set up for the upcoming double.

Smooth GW. Used my free hit and scored 81 pts with only three players blanking.

All three strikers scored including my punt, Danny Ings. Had Jesus and Lacazette too.

Also on the roll of honour: Butland, Baines, Salah, Sterling (c), KDB.

Rough: Having to go back to my actual team and seeing Hegazi, Bauer and Doucoure.

        • Deulofail

Smooth: A decent Free Hit return of 75pts, thanks to Hennessey (10), Sterling (11), Salah (7), Lacazette (13), Sterling captain (14) and the Coleman-Baines double-up (14).

Rough: People won't like me complaining about a good score, but I'm slightly disappointed in myself for switching Mane and D. Silva for Ozil and Sterling due to concerns on here about Silva's nailedness (ironyyyy). Those were my final transfers before the deadline and cost me 10pts. Then on Saturday I switched my prefered captain from my favourite choice, Sterling, to the more nailed choice, Jesus, which cost me a little more still (4pts).

Without doing the maths, I'm pretty sure I have not outscored what I would have got over the previous 3 gameweeks if I used FH in GW33 and saved my WC for GW36. I had my team set up nicely for this week, and would have got nearly 70pts anyway and the added bonus of being on the WC right now. I switched plans on the Friday going into GW33 due to the leaked Liverpool team revealing that Firmino was absent, which was the final straw, causing me to activate the WC. Oh well...

One final point is that if I had stuck with my original FH team I'd have got 89pts (14 points more), which would have been enough to teak the lead in my ML for the first time this season. Currently sitting 12pts behind, and catching up at a snail's pace. Infuriating 😆

5 minutes before the deadline I switched my FH team from 3-5-2 to 3-4-3 . I brought in Lacazette, Ramsey and Monreal for Firmino, Sane and Maguire .Otamendi didn’t play but as I had switched to 3-4-3 the autosub skipped my first sub Zaha and  I got the 6 points from my second sub Tomkins.

Ended up with 87 points .  My best ever GW rank of 519 and my OR improved from 430k to 195k

          Smooth: Everything after!

Laca, Sterling (c), KDB, Jesus, Baines, Butland all chipping in. 7k GW rank which is my best ever I think and massive FH success.

Smooth: Free Hit of 84 points. Captain Sterling over Salah/Jesus was stat based thinking which came off. Absolutely nailing my Arsenal picks: Lacazette, Monreal, and in particular uber differential Ramsey was glorious! Ended on a gameweek rank of 1000 which I think is my best ever, and a jump from 150k OR to 66k 🙂

Rough: I know this sounds churlish when Ive just scored 84, but Jesus missing a penalty which would have been a Sterling assist aswell was a swing of roughly 9-13 points away from me. Zaha being booked for diving when he should have won a penalty. I also had a bench worth 21 points.....my bench last week on bench boost contributed 10 points....

Have had numerous unexpected hauls from him throughout the season. Who could forget the Liverpool shut out in GW24.

Rough: Took a -8 to bring in Zaha and Sane. Terrible. Was expecting a minimum return of 4 but ended up with 2. I guess that kind of puts to bed the Transfers only cost -2 points in a blank GW debate for me at least.

Rough: Benched Tomkins and played Bellerin and VVD who got 3 between them.
Smooth: Everything else. Chose Lacazette over Auba. Triple City all delivered Salah(c). 77 points GW rank 15213 up to 67567 overall. Only 5 points of leaders in ML.

Rough: Got Pererya as my differential following Jonty's fantasy island risk pick (thanks for that 😉 ) getting 1p, although he destroyed Joel Ward.

Rough: Ozil missing his game due to 'illness' (yet again) and having Klavan's measly 1 pt off the bench - I am certain Ozil would have hauled against the Hammers.
Jesus missing that penalty - an easy minimum 8 pt swing with Sterling's assist and missed bonus points.
Taking out Monreal for VVD before the deadline was up.

Smooth: Butland's 5 pt haul even after conceding, dude is a saves merchant!
Taking out Auba for Laca after hearing Wenger's comments.

Rough, Ozil no show/Milner gamble didn’t pay off
Smooth, Sterling(C) De Bruyne, Jesus, Laca and Everton double defence
GW rank 2.7k, highest ever I think and OR from 79k to 35k. If only Jesus had scored the penalty

Rough: I had an Arsenal defender.
          Smooth: it was Monreal.

          Rough: My keeper conceded.
Smooth: it was Butland, who got 5 points anyway.

          Rough: Nozil.
Smooth: Salah Sterling Lacazette and Captain Jesus (I’m staying positive about his 7 points!)

All in all, a big green arrow halved my rank, with 69 points. Nice.

As I’m Wildcarding in 36 (and Free hit in 34) I’ve been preparing for 35 without using the FH and trying to think of what MC players might be rotated in for the reduced week. Had Bernardo Silva stinking up my team for weeks! Banging in the rebound for that penalty made me forgive him. On the downside I minused 4 to bring in Otamendi...

          Amazing smooth this week.
FH played - 86 points (GW rank 679). Jump from 138k to 58k + 10th straight green arrow. Without FH, old squad would have scored 28, so 58 point swing!

This was despite starting Moreno, benching Hennessey, benching Ings and forgetting to save a late captain switch from Jesus to Sterling.

          Team was:
          Pickford,
          Baines, Moreno, PVA,
          KDB, Sterling, Salah, Ramsey, Zaha
          Jesus (C), Lacazette.

Rough: had Hennessy, Ramsay and Montreal in my first draft and changed it at the end for Karius, Zaha and Mustafi.
But at the end of the day not so bad with 69 points. Captained Jesus so it's a split in that regard! Could have been better but could have been worse!

Rough: after a terrible season, on a FH, decided to amuse myself by a triple Arsenal front 3 of Auba, Laca, Welbeck - hoping for a Wenger-departure-news bounce. Captained Laca into the bargain. All my chips on red (& white!) 85 minutes played they'd just about made double figure score between them.
Smooth: in the final five minutes Laca bags a brace and 26 points alone. Gameweek saved - I'll never forget the only gameweek in my FPL career in which I had three forwards from the same team!

Smooth - Ramsey, double Everton defence, Butland replacing Cech.

Rough - As Gundogan Sterling and Jesus owner, Jesus taking the penalty was a blow. Gundo scoring would have been great differential points + the Sterling assist and possible BAPs for both.

Scoutcast/FFS wisdom is finally paying off for this novice FPL manager (3rd season). Thanks Jonty & Co!

Very smooth last two weeks (up 500K spots!) after a season full of rough. 79 points in GW35 with FH is my highest ever GW rank (4,740) and comes on the back of bench-boosted 107 (-4) in GW34.

GW35 smooth: Lacazette in for Firmino, triple City, and strong FH defense (Baines, Pickford, Tompkins). Minor roughs were Mane, Zaha, and VVD.

DGW34 BB was rough until the late games and triple ManU (Smalling, De Gea, and Lukaku) made me forget the roughs of Morgan, Willian, and Mahrez.

Was at a depressing 885K after GW33, far below Top 200K finishes of past years, but have gained over half a million spots in two weeks! Now at 383K and pushing for respectability in my MLs. I've also leapt in front of the wife who is in some of the same MLs. Strong final GWs and a good TC pick and I could get my highest-ever finish (best is 116K).

          Smooth (with no free hit)
Fabianski (Jonty was asking for Fabianski owners)
          Walcott
Vardy, Mahrez, Lingard, Alonso out Sterling, D.Silva, Jesus and Lowton -12
          Gaining rank despite the hits.
Getting to keep man city assets.

          Rough
          Aubameyang vs Laca
          Firmino
VVD, Mustafi and Bauer no clean sheet.

Got some great smooths for this week. Made temporary freehit team on monday. Then on saturday my phone died and i was traveling, so couldn't check lineups and make other last minute tinkering. Ended up with Lacazette, which i had put in instead of auba. Whole game even wished for auba goals instead of Laca. Also got heaton and robertson starting and not playing. In comes Hennesey and Tomkins.. 29 points instead of 8 if scores had sticked and heaton and robertson played..

Because it's Everton that are playing. If you look at the premier league table, all clubs below the top six except Everton have been relegated or promoted in recent years or fought through relegation battles. Everton meanwhile remain in a state of stasis, going no higher than seventh or lower than ninth. There is no danger of oblivion for Everton but there is no hope for anything better either. Goodison Park is football's very own purgatory.

Say what you like. Nick was one of the best FPL thinkers in the game. One of the few to think independently and not go along with the crowd. He captained Aguero against Leicester when the scoutcast unanimously agreed to swerve Kun.

I have Baines in my free hit team so I'm watching the game and reminiscing on what an FPL legend Baines used to be. On pens and was such a threat bombing down that left hand side. Everton's defence was decent then as well so plenty of clean sheets. These days it appear that Baines is playing a much more withdrawn role. It doesn't look like he will be getting anywhere near the penalty area. Maybe he hasn't got the legs anymore. I'd be just happy with an Everton clean sheet tonight although it's hope more than expectation.

Walcott scores the only goal of the game and gets no bonus.

Fabianski picks the Ball out of his net 5 times and gets bonus.

The PFA player of the year is somehow, incredibly allergic to bonus points.

The bonus points system is simply not fit for purpose.

When will people with a high profile in FPL speak out and get the criteria for BPS changed.

                      It just needs fine tuning.

Salah is about to break all FPL records and yet BPS hates him. There is something fundamentally wrong there.

People love points. I think there should also be 2 points for a partial clean sheet and 2 points for an opta key contribution (this would get rid of all the contention with dodgy assists).

I'm in agreement about something like the opta key contribution, then stick with assists being assists, not FPL assists.

Though points for winning a penalty (even when you take the penalty) should also be assists, which then creates some confusion.

Maybe winning penalties should count as a key contribution, regardless of whether they are scored, and winning a freekick in the final third counts towards bps points, no assist. But now we are talking about confusing it even more, and falling farther from opta than we should.

They definitely need to change the BPS awarded for a penalty save. No player should ever get bonus in a 5-0 defeat. He already gets points for the penalty save, the automatic bonus that comes with it is too much.

Because I don't like the chips that much, and this would restrict their use so that we can go back to choosing the FPL players we think are the best. At the moment, the chip strategy people use (which is often chosen fairly arbitrarily, or people copying others) can greatly determine the players we pick. If we can limit the effect of the strategy, we can allow each manager to employ their own strategies using the FTs and reacting to football games and news, not having to stick to the (chip) plan.

That is too restrictive. It should be as-is. Use it when you want, and reap rewards or suffer consequences if choice is good or bad. (why would you direct folks?).

This. Without the FH chip, people can choose to prepare for blanks or not (or something in between). There's a division of basically 2 strategies, and a continuum between them, which is already a step away from simply choosing the best players based on who you like for the set fixtures ahead. That's not too bad, though.

I also don't mind the idea of introducing a FH chip to counter this so we level the playing field again.

What I don't like is the FH as it is, which stifles creativity, as MGPT says here: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/03/08/scout-notes-spurs-out-city-through/?hc_page=5#hc_comment_17772850

Everyone just comes here and copies everyone else. It's lame as balls. We are all spoonfed.

Yeah for sure especially when you can pay for the information!

I'd like one captain, one wildcard and an independent bap reviewer. At most, one chip.

I did far better back in the day figuring out players and teams myself. Rank history proves it.

Hell of a lot easier these days. Just pick top 5 form the watch list. Job done.

It also helped that there was a team in each BGW who had heavily owned players and who scored 5 goals

That's true. The team he built by using polls at the start of the season got him enthusiastic about FPL again.

His form tables were incredibly useful. It was the closest thing to a crystal ball we had in FPL.

It's not as easy as you'd think. We have to perform various checks, red tape exercises and procedures. A lot of people have a lot riding on this and the fact that we offer prizes also complicates matters given it leads to us being audited by governing bodies. Despite all this it's only a few hours. Do understand the frustration though and thank you for your patience.

If you wanna restrict a chip to a specific couple of GWs so that we return to old days then might as well get rid of the chip altogether. Doesn’t make sense otherwise

I gave reasons In the link.

Ragabolly, I think one of the reasons the chip was introduced was to keep the more casual player interested so they weren't surprised and dejected by having only 4 players in a GW. 1 or 2 FHs, only useable if there are fewer than 11 GWs seems the best of both worlds to me.

I don’t know about keeping the casuals interested but if so, all my casual friends are still interested although most used the chips ages ago.

Which is why it would ne good for your friends if it were restricted to BGWs. You would beat them due to the players you picked rather than because you played the chip at the right time.

That would be my preference. I don't see why that's a stupid viewpoint lol

If you don't like the chips, I think a better way would be to get rid of them. No point in limiting the 5 million odd players in such a way, imo.

Tbf, I don't know if it would change much. There is usually a consensus on a strategy (within the FPL communities) because it is in all probability the best one, but I do agree in some respects.

Exactly, if there is even more consensus on chip strategy, the difference between our teams are the players we chose purely on our own personal view of their merits. Otherwise too much of our decision process is based on which teams have or don't have a fixture (or double fixture). FH makes it more boring for me, and makes posts on here monotonous. Plus it again punishes casual players who haven't checked for the best strategy, which kind of defeats the purpose, and makes for a more empty victory.

Mahrez vs Willian (last 4 PL starts)
Mahrez faced bha, NEW, bur, SOU
Willian faced CPA, TOT, WHU, sou

Willian has a higher XG (1.48 to 0.59), higher XA (1.19 to 0.64), almost double BPS (83 to 48), 15 goal attempts vs 6 of Mahrez, and 7 shots on target to Mahrez' 3. Willian also created 14 chances while Mahrez created 6.

Why are so many in favor of Mahrez over Willian this GW?

Because he’ll play 2 games instead of 1 in the dgw.

This is why I’m liking Mahrez. See below.

Alonso is enough Chelsea cover imo.

Mahrez is a type of player stats don't favor at all. Similar to vardy but they have pedigree to haul. Willian on the other hand has a lot of chances and never hauls and sometimes gets hauled off

Tbh will keep both for gw37 as fixtures are too good there unless I think I can nail down city mids apart from sterling

I think Mahrez is less likely to be rotated in DGW37 but I'll probably get rid of him because I won't be able to afford Sterling+Jesus if I get rid of Willian

Think u are a Kaku owner. Since I am a vardy owner to get both sterling and Jesus needs a -12 which I think is not worth. So mostly going sterling only

Nailedness and fixtures? I don't necessarily think Willian will outscore Mahrez but I think he should be better value for money.

Yeah it probably was a defensive substitution but Willian was the one to go. I have both but I'm going to upgrade 1 to a city mid and at the moment it's going to be Willian because of the rotation risk. I'd like to keep both tbh though.

already have Lukaku and kane so it makes more sense for me to just add Jesus

if going big up top, Kane - Jesus - Vardy

that requires extra transfers and hits for me so doesnt make sense....

you gave no stipulations, just wanted to know the best 3.

Vertonghen is the obvious pick but I'd wait until Friday to hear about Man City news. If Otamendi is playing the next 3 games then he could be on for a haul in the DGW

I'm probably going to go for a Swansea defender and upgrade midfield to a city midfielder

I'd keep Alonso. Back for the double in 37.

Lukaku to Jesus potentially? Otherwise roll.

If Salah is not in the pool team Salah to Sterling.

                                    keep Alonso for GW37.

you have Smalling Lowton Long (Morgan) to cover this week

In GW31 in the top 10k, FH teams outscored non-FH teams by 18 points.

In GW35 in the top 10k, FH teams outscored non-FH teams by 24 points.

This is not a perfect measure (there may be some self-selection bias), but it seems to suggest that FH35 was the better strategy. I also think that the FH35 allowed an easier navigation of the DGWs, which was a much greater advantage than the easier navigation of GW28-30 which FH managers had.

Yeh always seemed like the safer plan and as we know in fpl - safe is the best way

Safe would be to play the FH in GW31 when you knew which teams were blanking. We could have easily had only 2 postponed fixtures and the free hitters of GW35 would be regretful.

Hard to tell but maybe just.
I did not think it was a good idea before the City game I had 14 points from 5.
Ended up with 55k GW rank !!
Same strategy probably went 34 BB too and that was decidedly mediocore for me with at 650k GW rank.

Yeah but FH35 teams get their old teams back now, many without any City assets 😉
I took a -16 this week and scored 59 points, scored 111 on my FH in 35. Happy enough with that. It's all team dependant anyway, no better strategy.
