    4.0 defence options - a thorough summary.

They’re usually fools’ folly and the first few here are only for those looking to be different. As we move through all viable options, however, I think there’s case to be made for some really positive enablers this year. The options available may actually allow for 2 season-keepers at 4.0 which is something I’ve not previously seen.

Malone – HUD. Highest total points from last year and the most owned (at this price) but Wagner has basically stated that he won’t be playing. May feature as backup at some point.

McQueen – SOU. Unlikely to play but has had a few starts over preseason, has PL experience and could feature over the course of the season. Lots of competition at the back for SOU though so unlikely to beat his personal best tally of 23pts.

Schelleto – BHA. Has played 250+ mins over the preseason so Hughton not afraid to use him. Bruno is first choice though so would be doing well to beat last year’s 20pts. BHA alternative Suttner not getting picked.

Simpson – BOU. Has played approx. as many mins over pre-season as Aké, Cook and Francis. Could be a breakthrough year for him (may get 40+ pts?) but BOU defence not good and hardly worth the punt.

Benalouane – LEI. Will possibly start their first match. Has been favoured in first choice XI over pre-season at times and if starts well then could play a strong role throughout the season. Maguire likely to take his place when back from WC duty (but then again may get a transfer out). Likewise, Evans will probably start when back from injury. Potential to get 40+ pts if lucky.

Bennett – WLV. Getting into the territory of possible season-long starters now although would you really want a defensive starter from WLV? May be playing second fiddle to Saiss since his WC return but still getting game time in recent matches and has played 350+ mins over preseason so Nuno has an interest. Also has had 4 seasons in the PL. Outside bet at beating best ever tally of 47 if he gets the nod ahead of Saiss at times and if WLV defence starts well. WLV alternative Batth not in favour.

Peltier – CDF. Seems to now have gotten the nod to start at the back. Will possibly play 30+ games this season if keeps form. Two others at this price point for CDF (Connolly and Richards) who have gotten good game time over preseason but neither seem to have as much of a chance as Peltier. As good a chance as any to maintain a consistent spot but depends on your faith in the CDF defence.

Bednarek – SOU. On to what I consider an unprecedented 2 gems at this price. Bednarek came into PL late last season and started 5 of SOU’s last 6 games which ultimately lead them to safety. Picked up 2 clean sheets and a goal in this time and averaged 4.5+ PPG. He broke into Poland’s WC starting XI too, played in all 3 games and scored the winner with a CS in game vs Japan (vs teammate rival Yoshida!). Has started all 3 friendlies since returning from WC and appears to be in favour with Hughes. I can’t see why he dropped from 4.5 to 4.0 and if he can maintain his form under Hughes could have a good season with a team who have shown themselves capable of keeping CSs. Can never expect too much from 4.0 and I know I’m being overly-optimistic considering the competition in SOU backline but looks a solid pick to me.

Ban Wissaka – CPA. The apparent jewel in everyone’s crown, Hodgson seems to really favour this guy. Has PL experience having played plenty games last season and has been a mainstay over the preseason. Lots hoping for a breakthrough year for him and he looks as good a choice as any 4.5s for sure. Palace alternative Kelly (second most owned at this price) not getting near starting XI at present.

    Conclusion
Foolish to look in the bargain basement? Perhaps. The golden age of the 4.0 defender? Not quite. There are options though! It seems everyone knows Wan Bissaka is a good pick. I think there’s enough to select from to have 2 X 4.0 - especially if you’d usually have 2 X 4.5 where the options are decidedly limited. Wan Bissaka and Bednarek have the potential to fetch 100+ points each if regularly starting. Peltier and Bennett may do ok but you might need to be someone who puts great faith in Championship defences to go there. If you are wild carding early, already have 3 from Palace or are just looking for a bit of craic then Simpson and/or Benalouane may offer some fun.

Cheers, I was set on Pelt, now considering Bednarek. Only concern is Bednarek has much higher ownership so price drop more likely if he doesn't start.

Thanks mate. Are Soton playing a 343 this season, thus allowing an extra slot at the back for Bednarek? Im looking at him, AWB & Peltier at the back in conjunction with Mendy and Robbo.

This allows me Auba, Aguero and Arnie up top.

Simpson is rumoured to be on his way to Rangers by the way.
Also I'm not 100% sold on Bednarek starting; Hughes could easily go for Stephens / Hoedt / Vestegaard imo.

Yeah lots of competition in SOU backline so impossible to say that he's 100% but he certainly seems in favour. Good to know that about Simpson...not that I was going there anyway!

Even with fodder, I want them to be nailed in the safety that I have 2 points to come off the bench in a worst case scenario.

AWB is the only one we can say is safe to start. Bednarek is a close second but there is quite a bit of competition in that Saints backline.

Fair play to people bold enough going for 2 x 4.0 defenders.

      Have an up-vote!

"I think there’s enough to select from to have 2 X 4.0 - especially if you’d usually have 2 X 4.5 where the options are decidedly limited."

Totally agree with this. I've been on Wan Bis + 4.5 for 3 weeks, and I keep alternating the 4.5 between Daniels, Tomkins, Jagielka etc. Now I'm going Bednarek for sure and taking the 0.5 saving. If he plays GW1 then there's sure to be a price increase, if he doesn't play I'll swap him for another 4.0 who does play and gain their price hike (hopefully).

That's assuming I don't have other fires to fight, although the rest of my team is not particularly punty

My defense: WB, Robertson, Bailly, Yedlin, Peltier.
WB & Yedlin rotate perfectly for the 3rd spot in defense. WB plays Liverpool GW2 when Yedlin plays Cardiff. Then it's WB all the way until GW9. From then Yedlin's fixtures are good and WB's fixtures are bad. Perfect!

Still think Bednarek is fairly risky. He's started the last three, but been subbed at half time or early second half for Stephens. Yoshida is just returning from the WC as well. I know he is going to the Asia Games, but he's definitely going to be a big danger to Bednarek when he's back (if Stephens haven't already taken his place). The back three haven't been working well for Soton in preseason either, so can't rule out a return to four at the back, and I don't think Bednarek would be in favour if so.

I fancy him to start the first game or two, but unless he perform well he's a big risk IMO. Wan-Bissaka and Peltier much safer.

Yeah I think you’re right. I always plan to wildcard after GW 6 so I’m happy to see how his season starts and take it from there. Yoshida at Asia games makes Bed more appealing if you ask me.

Yeah, with the wingers' prices up and Mahrez in the fold it makes a lot of sense to me. One of the 5.5 center backs like Stones could be interesting too if a clear pecking order emerges.

Damn it, Garg, just when I'd thought I'd settled 🙂

I think Walker's ahead of Ederson because although Ederson's obviously cheaper, Walker has more capital to draw from and a defender transfer is far more enticing than a goalkeeper one.*

Plus it would be more secure than gambling on mids/forwards, could seek attacking points from other teams and be secure with a top clean sheet count and attacking potential.

It's an out of the box tactic but a strong one IMO.

Is the FFS membership worth it? Get so much use out of the scout without it so just wondering what the added benefits are.

Bernard having a medical at Everton soon apparently, does this mean he might replace or rotate with walcott? I assume Siggy and Richarli are safe so must be that way

      I'd guess walcott

Why is Siggy safe? I could see Siggy being benched. He is good on set pieces and crossing, but he isn't the quickest. Could see a front 4 of Bernard, Walcott, Richarlison and Tosun.

He's the only playmaker though. And a 'must' regarding set pieces, especially as Baines seems to be ousted by Digne.

Anyone fancy rating their Palace defenders in order of preference, tricky business. I think mine are as follows:

      1. PVA
      2. Schlupp

      4. Sakho
      5 Wan-Bissaka

        1) PvA - Most likely for attacking returns. Best 5.5m DEF IMO.
        2) Sakho - BAP King. Best 5.0m DEF IMO.
        3) AWB - Value enabler with CS potential. Best 4.0m DEF IMO.
        4) Tomkins - Value with the odd goal here and there. Best 4.5m DEF IMO.
        5) Schlupp - OOP potential but likely to slot in wherever required, not nailed.
