Man City 5-0 Burnley

  • Goals: Riyad Mahrez x3 (£8.2m), Benjamin Mendy (£5.9m), Ferran Torres (£6.9m)
  • Assists: Kevin De Bruyne x2 (£11.6m), Kyle Walker (£6.2m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.3m), Phil Foden (£6.5m)
  • Bonus points: Mahrez x3, B Mendy x2, De Bruyne x1, Walker x1

KDBACK

Kevin De Bruyne (£11.6m) and his Manchester City colleagues sent an emphatic statement to Fantasy Premier League managers in their 5-0 win over Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

This was the first fixture of an appealing run for Pep Guardiola’s men which continues with Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle all set to visit the Etihad Stadium between now and Gameweek 15.

And it appears that Manchester City have hit top gear just in time as their win over Burnley was the first time since Gameweek 2 that they scored more than twice in a match, while De Bruyne registered his first double-digit haul since that trip to Wolves.

He provided two assists in the rout but could have come away with more, nearly lobbing Bailey Peacock-Farrell (£4.0m) before striking the post in stoppage time.

Following a much-needed midweek rest, the Belgian is the clear favourite to snap up for reliable starts from Gameweek 11 onwards, especially considering he is already the most popular Manchester City asset (19%).

However, it is still worth noting how much of a differential De Bruyne actually is compared to other similarly-priced midfielders, a strange concept indeed.

At the time of writing, Diogo Jota (22.8%), James Rodríguez (28.3%), Mohamed Salah (29.6%), Bruno Fernandes (37.6%), Jack Grealish (41.8%) and Son Heung-min (57.6%) all sit in more teams than De Bruyne, none of which can offer the same level of appealing fixtures in the next four or five Gameweeks.

Considering Manchester City host Fulham next time out, De Bruyne is sure to be a popular captain option for Gameweek 11 and that alone could be enough to force the hands of those without his services.

TEXTBOOK ROULETTE

De Bruyne’s credentials for the coming weeks are arguably boosted when we consider who the alternatives are for Fantasy investment.

For the fourth time in seven meetings with Burnley, Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) was named on the bench and, even though he stayed there throughout Saturday’s match and is theoretically more likely to start against Fulham, Gameweek 10 will not have helped Fantasy managers trust the Englishman.

Meanwhile, a hat-trick for Riyad Mahrez (£8.2m) is sure to take the national headlines but even FPL newcomers will know the Algerian is a poisoned chalice of Fantasy points.

The former Leicester man was brilliant against Burnley, thoroughly deserving of a 21-point haul but it was the first time he had not blanked since Gameweek 3. Furthermore, Mahrez has completed 90 minutes just once in the last four Gameweeks.

Still, Guardiola used his performance to send a warning to his other attacking players.

“Of course it can help us, especially for Riyad. For the other ones, Gabriel has to score goals, the others have to score goals, Sterling when he plays has to score goals. They haven’t scored much and have to score goals. That is the reason why they are here and play up front.” – Pep Guardiola

Looking for a cheaper alternative is also a risky manoeuvre right now, when we consider that Phil Foden (£6.5m) has started one Premier League match since Gameweek 5.

While benchings sometimes indicate a start in the next match is incoming, a string of five in a row is certainly enough to mistrust the England international as a reliable option for Fulham’s trip to the Etihad Stadium next time out.

By comparison, Ferran Torres (£6.9m) has now started the last four in a row, finally delivering on his promise and getting a first Premier League goal.

Still, if Sterling is to come in for Gameweek 11, it would mean dropping one of either the Spaniard or Mahrez. Guardiola will not be swayed by the Algerian’s hat-trick, you would imagine but predicting who that might be might be too much for anyone considering Torres, even if his minutes were managed in Gameweek 10, replaced by Foden in the 67th minute.

Gabriel Jesus (£9.3m), who has two attacking returns in his last three, completing 90 minutes consistently since Gameweek 8, might benefit from Sergio Aguero‘s (£10.3m) injury situation for maybe one more week.

The Argentinian missed the meeting with Burnley and does not sound ready to make an immediate return although Guardiola insists he is not injured.

“It’s not dangerous. Not injury. The reaction sometimes the knee, swollen. Hopefully tomorrow he can come back to training.” – Pep Guardiola

JOÃO CANCELLED?

Among those rotated out of the starting line-up was João Cancelo (£5.6m), who proved popular with Wildcarders inside the top 10,000 FPL managers for Gameweek 10.

With Benjamin Mendy (£5.9m) featuring in midweek, it had been thought that Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.5m) might come in for Cancelo, if he were to be benched, but the Frenchman was chosen for a second consecutive start in all competitions.

Interestingly, Cancelo stayed on the bench for the duration as Mendy was handed a rare 90-minute outing, in which he scored his first goal of the season.

Owners of the Portuguese full-back will likely wait in worry for Manchester City’s next Champions League line-up and Guardiola’s next press conference.

Selling one of their defenders ahead of a match-up with Fulham will take nerves of steel but it seems unlikely that we will be handed concrete clues about left-back selection, as is usually the case with Guardiola, who has already put out one ominous quote regarding Mendy.

“(Asked about Mendy’s goal) It is important for our people to score goals. If they score goals, they have more chance to keep playing.” – Pep Guardiola

Perhaps the real winner among Manchester City defenders in Gameweek 10 was Rúben Dias (£5.6m) who has now started each of the last seven Premier League matches and even had his minutes managed against Burnley, coming off after 69 minutes to bank a clean sheet before his colleagues did.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Mendy, Stones, Dias (Garcia 70′), Walker; Gundogan, Rodrigo (Fernandinho 46′), De Bruyne; Torres (Foden 67′), Jesus, Mahrez.

Burnley XI (4-3-3): Peacock-Farrell; C Taylor, Mee, Tarkowski, Lowton; McNeil, Benson, Westwood; Rodriguez, Wood, A Barnes.

Lessons Learned from FPL Gameweek 10

Who knows what this GW will bring but... This looks like it could be a hold for GW11 barring any injuries/ covid. Agree?

    1FT 0.5itb
    Martinez
    Robbo, Chilwell, KWP
    Bruno, KDB, Ziyech, Grealish
    Vardy, DCL, Bamford
    (Forster) (Cresswell, Stephens, Branthwaite)

Plan would be to bring Salah in for Bruno in GW12, funded by either DCL > Wilson/ Watkins or Ziyech > Jota for free with 2FT.

    Cheers

Considering Grealish and Jimenez to De Bruyne and Bamford/Wilson for a hit this week. Next week Foden becomes Jota for the Fulham game. Seem like a reasonable plan?

    Current team is:

    Martinez, Button
    Dias, Chilwell, Cresswell, Lamptey, Mitchell
    Salah, Ziyech, Grealish, Foden, Anguissa
    Calvert-Lewin, Vardy, Jimenez

Difficult one. I considered doing a straight swap with Salah but I'd have to consider a straight swap back because Liverpool have Fulham next. That's why I'm looking at a hit and moving Grealish instead.

Of those options I'd probably just toss a coin between B and C.

Yes easily. For example I was 1.8m 2 weeks ago. Currently 830k with 6 and Capt left to play.

Couple of good weeks and you'll be back inside top 1m.

Top 100k achievable by season end.

Well here I am, proof that I don't only sing when I'm winning.

Awful transfers this week. Sterling + Cancelo in for hits. Tried to chase the upside and it hasn't worked. But I think I'm likely to stick with them one more week anyway. The fixture is too good, Pep rotation too unpredictable.

I brought them in to chase a big double digit score for BUR FUL, and I think that's still possible. One more week. Sterling probably goes either way for Salah, but Cancelo stays if he gets back in the side.

Plan is to roll FT this week and get Salah back for 12. Always good to not make any transfers after having a big fail of a week to reset.

What are other Sterling/Cancelo owners planning to do?

    1. _Ninja_
      • 15 Years
      5 years, 8 months ago

Not an owner but I would definitely keep both for next week. Problem is if Cancelo plays v Porto away and Mendy is rested for FUL.

Yeah but UCL doesn't actually tell us much. If Mendy plays he could be just straight up first choice and getting game time. If he doesn't, he could be rested.

There's no guessing Pep Roulette. We don't know how the players are training and how Pep wants to use them. It's not so simple as... he's rested midweek, he plays at the weekend or vice versa.

I think I'm just gonna keep both. I have Lamptey first sub back this week so he can cover one absence.

it will if Cancelo plays the full 90 mins v Porto away, he's not starting v Fulham imo

Well, currently sitting on Salah+Sterling. KDB is an absolute must to me this week and will come in no matter what. So the question is, for who?

Salah has Wolves (H). Poor fixture but will 100% be my captain next GW vs Fulham. So that has to be accounted for.

Sterling has Fulham (H). The upside is so high here but the issue is the chances of him starting. If he does start, that's hat-trick territory. If he doesn't, well it's not like Salah's chances of hauling are high either but it will cost me a FT next GW, possibly force a -4. So I think I'll keep but the CL game will be vital to my final decision.

Yeah try and figure out if he'll play or not. If you think it's lower than 60% chance, I'd lean towards getting rid for KdB in a straight swap.

Def have to own it and stick.

I talked about this, I don't think midweek tells us anything.

If Mendy plays is it good or bad? He could just be straight up first choice and getting game time. If he doesn't play, he's being rested for the weekend? We just don't know.

Obviously I'm gonna sit until Friday injury news, but other than that, the midweek lineup won't tell us much of anything.

I don't think many people thought Torres and Mahrez were gonna be the starting wide forwards this week. Torres especially didn't play a single minute midweek.

I also bought Sterling in for my second 4 point hit of the season, for the same reasons as you i plan to keep for GW11 banking 2 transfers and transfer out for Salah GW12, however if he scores well i would keep and likely move Cancelo on with one of my 2 transfers in GW11 and bring in Robertson/TAA(if fit) as i have just got the funds to do that. I already have Jota from GW8 wildcard so i have Liverpool attacking coverage.

I think this game has sealed Sterling's fate. Even if he scores a hat-trick vs FUL I'm still gonna get rid. I have KdB already, he's not nailed on, Salah is a priority for the Fulham game and I have no other player I'd rather use to fund it seeing as my midfield is Sterling, KdB, Son, Grealish, Jota.

In hindsight putting all their hopes of ever scoring a goal again on a highly over priced Brewster was a massive mistake.

Brewster looks completely lost (and of course he would be, he is very young, ridiculous price tag and knows he has been brought in with the expectation of single handedly keeping Sheff Utd up having never started a premier league game before.

Not easy for youth team players to fit in with SHU's overlapping centre half system. Ampadu has had similar problems. Tough experienced pros think they can sort it, but failed badly so far.

Would be a good joke if not for the fact Sheffield United have an okay enough xG - it's just that the players aren't converting based on it.

Post two comments down showing how they're underperforming rather than not getting the chances full-stop.

Early thoughts on this? I could save the transfer thus giving me 2 FT ahead of GW12?
Alternatively, I could be aggressive and either move to get a City defender or potentially Mahrez?

    1FT 2.8 banked

They need to make the system work so that Brewster's xG becomes higher and problem perhaps partly solved. His shots at least looked okayish.

I'm hesitant on considering Dias nailed. He could be, based on Pep's comments. I think there's a case for him being nailed and not nailed, John Stones the main factor here. He has been impressive this season.

"With Benjamin Mendy (£5.9m) featuring in midweek, it had been thought that Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.5m) might come in for Cancelo, if he were to be benched, but the Frenchman was chosen for a second consecutive start in all competitions."

We? I saw the Mendy substitution mid-week as rest for yesterday's game. If Zinchenko was likely to play, Mendy would surely have been more likely to get the full 90.

Yeah. I would never have advocated bringing in Mendy, but that's due to his price, only recent return, and his injury history. (Christmas schedule not helping.)

I started the week looking at doing R. James > Cancelo (have double Chelsea defense, looking to diversify a tad now easier fixtures over), but UCL changed my mind.

He's the same as last year. When he plays he can get 15+ points. But he will also put up a few 1s. You need nerve to hold on to him through the benchings but after it all, he'll probably still make it to 150+ points so at 8.2m will probably be decent enough value.

Feels like chasing points but he could still be great. His PPM last season was excellent and he has started performing, Pep does like to use him against deep defenses. A hat-trick can only benefit his chances though of course he's not nailed. If you have the stomach to set and forget him from now to GW22, he'll probably prove good value.

Anyone else slightly concerned that a large chunk of Grealish’s points have come from just two games where Barkley was also heavily involved? Feels like Villa are losing a bit of their shine and I’m regretting having 3x of their players when shiny new toys with more consistency like Jota are tempting.

Grealish is the talisman - he is absolute rock solid pick at the price

      No.

Grealish scored over 150 points last year with a bunch of even worse players. He still has Watkins to feed him and to take the chances he creates compared to Samatta last year...
