The business end of the UEFA Champions League group stages brings us some mixed fixtures in Matchday Five.

Six teams have already qualified for the knockout stages, but there are some important battles to take place before we know who the other 10 competitors for the second round.

Form and qualification will come into play a lot more over the next two weeks so, with that in mind, here is a look at what to expect in UCL Fantasy and who to back ahead of this week’s fixtures.

Captains Sensible

Tuesday, December 1

Sensible

As we have come to learn from playing Fantasy Premier League, if in doubt, give the armband to Mohamed Salah (€11.6m). Liverpool know that victory against Ajax can see them qualify for the knockout stages and will not want to leave it until the last Matchday.

Salah needs no introduction, but with a goal narrowly disallowed against Brighton at the weekend and nailed-on penalties after James Milner’s (€6.0m) injury, he may well take responsibility for qualification into his own hands.

Differential

I really struggled to find a pick here. I have plumped for the starting striker in what is the only plum fixture of the night on paper. Atalanta have been in poor form domestically, but after his performances in Matchday One and Two and their great win against Liverpool, I’ve placed my faith in Duvan Zapata (€9.7m).

Opponents Midtjylland are yet to pick up a point in the group stages and Gian Piero Gasparini will know that a win will do wonders for their chances of qualification. Zapata has been their talisman so far in the competition and will lead the line again on Tuesday.

Wednesday, December 2

Sensible

This has to be Erling Haaland (€11.0m). A win will see Dortmund not only qualify, but be guaranteed group winners. Haaland is the top scorer of the group stages so far, with back-to-back braces taking him to six goals in four games. No-one seems to be able to stop the Norwegian wonder-kid and Dortmund should comfortably have the quality to beat Lazio.

Differential

With five goals so far in the competition and his late red card on Saturday ruling him out of the next league game, Alvaro Morata (€9.0m) should get the nod up front for Juventus against Dynamo Kiev.

While the Italian giants have been thoroughly uninspiring so far this season, Morata has been their saving grace on more than one occasion and Dynamo have been poor throughout the competition and struck badly by injury and positive coronavirus (COVID-19) tests.

Who to bring in?

My rule here is to back players and teams who still have something to play for. The big sides which traditionally fill our teams have mostly qualified by this stage and will be heavily rotating, as we’ve seen with Bayern Munich leaving Robert Lewandowski (€12.0m), Manuel Neuer (€6.0m) and Leon Goretzka (£7.6m) at home for their trip to Madrid.

Atletico Madrid know that they have to beat Bayern to leave qualification in their own hands and if they are to win, João Félix (€9.0m) will be involved. Borussia Dortmund need a win against Lazio to secure their qualification, with flying full-back Rafa Guerreiro (€6.0m) and attacking midfielder Gio Reyna (€6.5m) both top picks who look sure to start.

Atalanta have been in poor form domestically, but last seasons quarter-finalists have two must win fixtures on the horizon. Wing-back pairing Hans Hateboer (€4.9m) and Robin Gosens (€5.5m) showcased their prowess at both ends against Liverpool and will be instrumental in any success the Bergamo side have from here on in.

The teams in Group B and Group H still have all to play for, with PSG and Real Madrid among their ranks. Karim Benzema (€10.5m) is back fit and will be at the heart of Real Madrid’s action in Donetsk, the same defence which Borussia Mönchengladbach scored ten past over Matchdays Three and Four.

Gladbach themselves come into this game in top form and Alassane Plea (€8.2m) and Marcus Thuram (€8.7m) will look to take advantage of an Inter Milan defence which looks far shakier than their recent form suggests.

Group H is really too close to call, but PSG should have the quality needed against Manchester United and Istanbul Basaksehir to regain form and qualify. Kylian Mbappe (€11m) and Neymar (€11.4m) have looked poor so far in the competition, but only months away from their Champions League final loss, I have faith that the two will carry this side to the knockouts.

Who to avoid?

As I’ve mentioned above, this is a stage in the competition where the European giants take a back seat. Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Barcelona, Chelsea and Sevilla have all qualified and expect both lacklustre performances and rotation as a result.

Not too many injuries have been picked up since last week, with Eden Hazard (€9.4m) perhaps the biggest casualty.

Good luck everyone.

Yeah, it's one of them - you win some, you lose some! 24 - 25 is still very respectable. Are you still in it this season?

Yes. But i took major hits in the beginning of the season so was close to being out in 2 gws. I think I've accrued a lot of value as a result though and will have a very strong team soon so hopefully will stay in longer this time.

    Chilwell, Cancelo, Targett
Salah, KDB (C), Bruno, ziyech, Grealish
    Watkins, Bamford

    Forster, Brewster, Lewis, Coufal

Need a contingency plan if Villa V Newcastle is postponed.

Initial thought is Watkins > Adams Targett > Fofana

Anyone else have a similar issue with the potential postponement?

I'm sure the teams all agreed that fixtures would go ahead if they could field 11 from their u21s so unless they've all also had to isolate I can't see what grounds newcastle can appeal on

I'm on triple Villa and Double WH.

Last night was atrocious for me.

      Watkins missed.
      Fabiansky didnt save.
Target Assist ruled offside for a linen out Watkin's sleeve
      Watkins goal ruled out
      No CS

This is also the 2nd time this season i have both the keeper and penalty taker, and he ends up missing altogether.

Reagrding AVL - NEW: some verified info about the rules:

According to Premier League rules, fixtures will go ahead as planned as long as teams have 14 players available for selection. That includes not only players in the first team squad, but also the professionals in their U21 squad.

This makes any postponements very unlikely, unless a huge amount of footballers at a given club contract the virus.

Should a club refuse to partake in a fixture, they could face strict punishment. Such cases will be judged by an independent panel, where sanctions such as fines and points deductions would be on the table.

    1. Zimo

So the only chance it is postponed is if They infect each other on purpose. I wonder will they do it....

There are 30 pro players in the 1st team at NUFC and there are between 25 and 30 in the U21 so the change NUFC can't select 14 for Friday is rather slim unless they fake injuries but there would be sanctions I guess.

Infecting each others in purpose is morally super wrong too

There's also a rule that the U21s have to have played professional top tier football somewhere. Which results in a lot less options.

terrible GW with just 44 points and went Kane -> Vardy instead of Hamez -> KDB.

But I also had some bad luck with disallowed goals of Hamez, Robbo (assist to Mane), Watkins

I took a hit to sell Maupay for Watkins and was relieved on Saturday when Maupay missed the penalty, then frustrated twice last night when Watkin's missed his penalty and was then robbed of a goal for offside. I went into the Villa match with 3 players and high expectations, but ended up with 2 points from Martinez, Konsa and Watkins. Finished with 4 under the average. My hits rarely pay off.

      Roughs:
      - Brought Cancelo in for -4 (no show)
      - Salah’s disallowed goal
      - Mané’s disallowed goal (costing me a Robertson assist)
      - Brighton’s last minute “soft penalty” costing me a Robertson cleansheet and 3 bonus
      - Watkins penalty miss
      - Watkins disallowed goal
      - all total 28pts

      Smooths:
      - Sold Rodriguez (2) for Jota and captained him (18)
      - Regulion came off my bench for Cancelo for 5 pts
      - Bruno and Grealish double digit hauls
      - 65 (-4) for the week and a green arrow

Given I'd have otherwise captained Fernandes (although I may have benched Podence) - the hit broke even, but the midfield already looks far healthier - alongside Son, Grealish & Fernandes.

Would have liked Vardy (C) to net a little haul but having watched that match I'm absolutely running with that assist. Leicester were dire!

60 points and my bench got a solid 0 points thanks to me benching Watkins and his penalty miss. No idea why the lad takes them. Taken 6 and missed 4. That said I only got him in over Bamford co he was on penalties. One of the many transfers I regretted after doing it

      Finally some joy

      Maupay (-1), Kane (2), Zaha (auto sub 2) -> Wilson (12), KDB (10), Bamford (2) for a -8

      For 13 points profit.

      Woop 🙂

      61 points, FT was saved

Rough: Targett and Watkins. Do I need to say more? 😛
Along with Vardy C. Bit underwhelming.

This Knocked me off the top spot in the Multiple top 10k finishes league.

Smooth: Chilly and Dias, along with KDB, Bruno and Grealish. Gotta be happy with my GW9 WC. It has easily salvaged me 60 points over 2 weeks.

Up to 38k atm. Still aiming for another top 10k finish :).

Smooth: 75 points after following my plan to play WC when fixtures turn, bought Dias, Torres, KDB(C), Grealish, Bamford, Vardy, most of the team with returns except Robbo, PVA, Bamford and McCarthy so very happy with that. OR more than halved, gone from 1.2m to 550k. 210 pts in November.

Rough: lost CS for both Robbo and PVA in the last couple minutes of their games.

Extra rough: apparently after 5 or 6 years of using FUBAR as my team name FPL recognize it as being offensive, shame cause I really liked it and it even became my nickname at workplace, I guess that's 2020 in a nutshell for you 🙁

      69 Points. (TC Played)
However I accidentally Triple Captained Salah (really not sure how that happened and was saving it for a home game against one of the bottom 3!!
Still I Jumped 200K places and now in Circa 183K position, so happy with game week in general.
I bought in Chilwell for TAA and that was a great decision. I am seriously impressed with Cheslea defence and trusting in them with there GK and 2 x DEF's.
I have already planned to bring in Jota and Mahrez and switch to a 3-5-2, instead of 3-4-3 from game week 11.

8 point his with Kane, Rodriguez and Barkley (4) out for DCL, KDB and Jota (19) so I’ll take it.

      Rough: not much really
Smooth: got rid of Wilson last week on WC, but got him back this week for Werner. Also, WC picks from last week came through- Son, Salah, Zaha, Jrod and Jimenez out, Bruno (C), Jota, KDB and Grealish in. 77 points, 300k green arrow.

      Rough
49pts, and a smallish red, helped by a Dcl captain fail, and bringing Cancelo in as part of a - 8

      Smooth
Chilwell first sub for Cancelo , also a small profit from the rest of that hit as, Kenny, Havertz & Kilman with 2pts between them were the outgoing players, with Torres, Dias, Cancelo incoming for 14pts

Rough; Brought in Sterling for Son, doubling up with KdB. Worked a treat as Son didn't do much and neither did my other option Salah. Just a shame Pep didn't read the script! And to top it off he's dropped 0.1m overnight. Nine yes (9), one and two pointers with Bellerin on 0!

Smooth; Bruno(c) and KdB my only returners.

    Martinez (Steer)
    Robertson, Chilwell, Coufal (KWP, Mitchell)
    Salah, Son, Ziyech, Grealish (Stephens)
    Kane, DCL, Bamford

    2FT, 1.3 in bank

Subject to Villa news, should I burn a FT this week?

I would like to get KDB in for Ziyech or Son, but:

    (1) both Ziyech and Son have a good fixture this week

    (2) to do so I would need to downgrade Robertson, who has a home fixture against Wolves without Jimenez and generally not scoring many goals this season

In my view, the best way to approach the upcoming fixtures is to have 10 players that are nailed in your team and have one moving variable i.e. Bruno, KDB and Salah, which are to be bought and sold using the FT between gameweeks depending fixture difficulty.

So start with KDB for GW11 then replace with Salah for GW12 etc etc.

    Any thoughts?

In theory its good but in practice you will get injuries, your "nailed" cheaper players will have bad fixtures/form etc, and you will end up having to take hits if you follow this hokey cokey strategy.

I think this is a big underestimation of how much fitness disruption there could be. You should pick & stick with big hitters and keep transfers for tidying up.

The upside is huge though esp bearing in mind that the players brought in would be captain material. So if there are any unforeseen situations e.g. injuries/bans etc., taking a 4pt hit to resolve the issue would appear to be a small cost.

        1. Zimo
          • 7 Years
          5 years, 7 months ago

But the people with the triple up on these players you're rotating will also have them. I don't see an upside. They can rotate cheap defenders based on fixtures. This is a more reliable source of points than the hokey cokey of captains.

    4. No Professionals

never going to work in reality. a lot of people will have 3 big hitters who score well consistently, so most weeks you'll lose out and some weeks you'll get the wrong one.

      1. Vazza
        • 6 Years
        5 years, 7 months ago

With 3 big hitters, a third of the budget would be used up and once we factor in the bench players, that is a total of half of the budget used up. Most of the other players in the starting line up will be borderline enablers.

The way I play is to try to identify a spine of players who I will not waste transfers on unless it becomes clear there is a serious long term problem

      This year that's

      Kane
      Son
      Bruno

You can't make it a one man game as you have, but you can get it down to 7 or 8 by finding the players that your happy to take the rough with the smooth on

      1. Vazza
        • 6 Years
        5 years, 7 months ago

Most of the players that you mention already form the spine of my team. I’m referring to playing Hokey Cokey with Bruno, KDB and Salah only as they are easy to manoeuvre in and out of the team.

I disagree here very much. This is in theory the best way to play, in practice it is a complete failure. Injuries and poor form from your cheap players render this strategy really weak if anything doesn't go according to plan, and guess what, FPL NEVER goes according to plan.

well he is rubbish, and got hauled at half time v brighton.

but with Milner out you'd think he has to play.

depends how far TAA is away.

could be a decent 3rd defender if nailed. The fact a defender is bad doesn't make them a bad pick.

    Martinez
    Chilwell james cancelo (lamptey mitchell)
    Bruno kdb grealish ziyech (burke)
    Vardy dcl Watkins

    Thanks
