Not awarding the Mbeumo assist means they should award corner takers assists if it touches any defender, but they do.
The pass could very well be for Schade, makes sense that it was, would have reached him and did reach him after the small deflection. Not significantly altered and a bit insulting to mbeumo to presume he passed behind Wissa, when he easily could've been passing across the space left by the defenders Wissa dragged forward to an onrushing Schade.
More reasons to give it than take away imo

It's going to create inconsistent assists in the future, even though that's the rule on intended target it's a marginal call as he was squaring the ball.

What about when players pass into space or as you say with corner kicks?

      1. KanuLenoMeeMoCash
        • 5 Years

Players are regularly passing into space too, exactly. It is so easy to misjudge a player's intended target when we presume they have a specific individual in mind at all times.
He was sending that in to be attacked, and it was

This decision feels like it's as close as it gets. I can see both sides, why it should or shouldn't be an assist. I can't really tell if he meant the pass to Wissa or Schade so I'm fine with them deciding the intended target was Wissa. Moving on...

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years
        1 year, 2 months ago

You don’t have to pick a player as a target as far as I know. It’s not really in the spirit of what an assist is imo; Hesse you get an assist for the penultimate touch regardless of intention. FPL rules say it’s about the intended destination, which presumably can be a certain space or group of teammates.

      2. KanuLenoMeeMoCash
        • 5 Years
        1 year, 2 months ago

It's too presumptious deciding it was Wissa. As you say you can't know for certain, so he should get the benefit of the doubt if there is any

        1. Deulofail
          • 10 Years
          1 year, 2 months ago

Right!? I think, to remove that assist, you gotta think it would be impossible for the goalscorer to reach the ball had the ball continued its trajectory without a deflection. In this case, it's possible that Schade would have reached it anyway, so the assist should stand.

Unfortunately, like too many regulations in football and football records, they try to account for intention, which is impossible. Perhaps Mbeumo intended to kick it exactly where it ended up after the deflection, but his cross wasn't accurate. Who tf knows?

          1. KanuLenoMeeMoCash
            • 5 Years
            1 year, 2 months ago

            Exactly
It's annoying that someone just decided it was Wissa and that's that.
Presumably they won't review it again with the proviso that if they don't know they don't know and as such have to award it

            1. Deulofail
              • 10 Years
              1 year, 2 months ago

At the very least, they should delete all assists that were miskicked as well, since intention is apparently more important than the contribution from the player as it actually occurred!

I think there's a chance it's changed when the game updates at the end of the GW, but I'm not sure.

If this wasn't an assist for Bowen, then Mbeumo shouldn't get an assist either. I own Mbeumo(chalk) and owned Bowen(differential) for that and don't think either should be an assist.

The general destination of Bowen's speculative cross seemed to be the group of goal-hanging players rather than the stragglers holding back and hoping to mop up, so I can see a distinction between this case and the Mbeumo one.

That said, I still think the Bowen one should be an assist, because he speculates and he accumulates! He may well be aware that he has teammates in good positions aside from the goal-hangers, and that triggers him to cross the ball. Who knows? But his contribution caused the goal scorer to score.

The exception would be if the defender makes a more conscious attempt to block/clear the ball, altering the path from the goal-hanging group. But it was, in fact, a simple deflection, and into an area that was within the set of plausible outcomes for the crosser when he crossed.

I hope you enjoyed my waffle!

Arsenal benching was because of playing twice for New Zealand in International break. However I view the next 2 games as hard for Wood and will sell for Watkins or Jackson who have a better chance of scoring in easier upcoming fixtures.
