Our position-by-position price analysis continues with a look at the £5.5m midfielders in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

OVERVIEW

There are 62 midfielders currently priced up at £5.5m…

Now we’ll highlight the best of them.

PASCAL GROẞ

Brighton enjoyed a mixed 2025/26 campaign. Fabian Hurzeler’s side struggled for consistency at times, but they still achieved their main objective by securing European football. They finished eighth, missing out on the UEFA Europa League by a single point but earning a place in the UEFA Conference League.

The Seagulls also produced a fairly average attacking campaign. They never matched the Premier League’s most potent attacks, but they avoided the struggles of the division’s weaker sides. The underlying numbers reflected that. Brighton ranked around the middle of the table for several key attacking metrics, including goals scored, expected goals (xG) and big chances created.

Brighton’s opening fixture run is something of a mixed bag. Fabian Hurzeler’s side face the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa, but they also take on newly promoted Coventry City and Leeds United. They also rank among the top eight teams for projected goals over the opening weeks, which adds to their appeal from an attacking perspective.

That brings Pascal Groẞ into the conversation. The German usually operates in central midfield rather than an advanced attacking role, yet he still produced seven attacking returns after joining halfway through last season.

Much of his appeal comes from set-pieces. Groẞ already takes many of Brighton’s corners and free-kicks, giving him multiple routes to attacking returns. He also strengthened his case to become the Seagulls’ regular penalty taker during pre-season.

Against Strasbourg, Groẞ converted Brighton’s first penalty of the afternoon. Although his initial effort was ruled out for a double touch, he kept his composure and converted the retake. He also set up Olivier Boscagli with an inventive free-kick routine, again highlighting his influence from dead-ball situations.

That role could become even more important this season after Hurzeler revealed Brighton had spent part of their training camp placing extra emphasis on set-pieces.

I want them to keep building this set-piece culture because, like we all know, the Premier League is very keen on set-pieces.

It is very important that we are strong on set pieces, but of course we also want to have our own identity on the pitch as well, and that is playing intense football.” – Fabian Hurzeler

The main concern with Groẞ is Brighton’s return to European competition. With UEFA Conference League fixtures adding to their schedule, Hurzeler may choose to manage the 35-year-old’s minutes across the season. That creates some uncertainty over just how often Groẞ will start.

MAMADOU SANGARE

Brentford enjoyed another impressive campaign under Keith Andrews, securing another top-half finish while ranking strongly for several key attacking metrics. They also created the third-most big chances in the Premier League, underlining their ability to create high-quality opportunities.

The fixture list also looks encouraging. Brentford rank among the top four teams on our Season Ticker for the opening six Gameweeks, while the absence of European football should work in their favour. With only the Premier League and domestic cup competitions to contend with, Andrews is likely to keep his strongest side on the pitch more regularly, with extra recovery time between matches.

That makes Mamadou Sangare a serious consideration. The Mali international arrives in west London after an outstanding campaign with Lens.

While he delivered seven attacking returns in 2025/26, Sangare is unlikely to match the attacking output of some midfielders in this price bracket. Instead, his appeal comes from defensive contributions (DefCon).

He reached the DefCon threshold in 18 of his 27 Ligue 1 starts last season and averaged an outstanding 14.2 defensive contributions per 90 minutes. That figure actually surpassed Elliot Anderson (£6.5m), who became one of the game’s best-value midfielders under the DefCon scoring system.

There are still a few unknowns. Sangare must adapt to the pace of the Premier League and establish himself in Brentford’s midfield, while he is also unlikely to take corners, free-kicks or penalties like Groẞ. That means his attacking returns will likely arrive less frequently.

Even so, there is plenty to like. Brentford have already shown they can produce midfielders who thrive under the DefCon scoring system, while Sangare arrives with the underlying profile to follow a similar path. If he settles quickly and nails down a regular starting place, he has every chance of becoming one of the standout £5.5m midfielders in FPL.

GRANIT XHAKA

Sunderland enjoyed an outstanding 2025/26 campaign. Régis Le Bris guided the Black Cats to a seventh-place finish, securing UEFA Europa League football ahead of established Premier League clubs such as Brighton, Brentford, Chelsea and Newcastle United.

Despite that success, Sunderland didn’t stand out as an attacking force. Only three teams scored fewer Premier League goals last season, while their underlying numbers also ranked among the league’s weaker attacks. That lack of firepower could limit the appeal of their attacking assets heading into the new campaign.

If that wasn’t enough to raise concerns, Sunderland also ranked among the bottom four Premier League sides for several key attacking metrics. They produced some of the league’s lowest totals for shots, shots in the box, big chances and efforts on target.

Sunderland’s opening fixtures don’t help their cause, either. The Black Cats sit bottom of our Season Ticker for projected goals across the opening six Gameweeks. After struggling in attack last season, the schedule suggests those issues may continue in the early part of the campaign.

European football could also affect the appeal of Sunderland’s assets. Balancing a Premier League campaign with UEFA Europa League commitments is a tough challenge, particularly for a squad without the depth of some of the league’s biggest clubs.

So, why should FPL managers consider Granit Xhaka?

Despite Sunderland’s attacking struggles, the Swiss international still matched Groẞ for attacking returns last season, scoring once and providing six assists. Like Groẞ, Xhaka also takes right-sided corners and shares free-kick duties, giving him multiple routes to attacking returns.

Where the central midfielder really stands out, however, is through the DefCon scoring system. He ranked among the best midfielders in the game for defensive contributions last season, producing 363 in total. That equated to more than 11 DefCons per 90 minutes, giving him another reliable route to points.

Even in a Sunderland side that struggled to create chances, Xhaka still returned seven attacking contributions. If the Black Cats improve in their second Premier League campaign, those numbers could climb further. Combine that with his strong DefCon potential, and Xhaka could prove to be one of the best budget midfielders in FPL.

ALEX IWOBI

Fulham enjoyed another solid Premier League campaign in 2025/26. Marco Silva’s side secured an 11th-place finish, continuing to establish themselves as a reliable top-flight outfit after returning to the division.

The Cottagers never developed into one of the league’s more dangerous attacking sides, however. They ranked among the bottom teams for goals scored, big chances and shots on target, with the underlying numbers reflecting their lack of cutting edge in the final third.

Fulham have also lost a key attacking player this summer. Harry Wilson led the club for attacking returns last season before completing a move to Leeds United, leaving Silva with another hole to fill in the final third.

Fulham’s opening fixtures don’t help their cause, either. The Cottagers face Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United during the first six Gameweeks. As a result, they rank among the bottom teams on our Season Ticker for projected goals over that period.

Even so, Alex Iwobi remains an intriguing option. Unlike many midfielders in this price bracket, the Nigerian international offers genuine goal threat. He matched Groẞ and Xhaka for total attacking returns last season. Four of his seven returns came as goals.

Iwobi also plays a key role from set-pieces. He takes a healthy share of Fulham’s corners and free-kicks from both sides of the pitch. The departures of Raúl Jiménez and Harry Wilson could also hand him penalty duties this season.

Pre-season has already offered some encouragement. Iwobi stepped up to convert a penalty in Fulham’s 2-1 win over Farense, strengthening his claim to become Fulham’s first-choice spot-kick taker.

Fulham’s underlying attacking numbers and difficult opening fixtures are obvious concerns. However, Iwobi has more goal threat than many of the other £5.5m midfielders. His set-piece role also gives him several routes to attacking returns. If he adds penalties to his responsibilities, he could offer excellent value despite Fulham’s challenging start.

JOHN MCGINN

Aston Villa are one of the more appealing teams to target. Unai Emery’s side secured a fourth-place finish last season and booked another season of UEFA Champions League football. They continue to move in the right direction under the Spaniard.

The underlying attacking numbers tell a slightly different story, however. Villa finished seventh in the Premier League for goals scored, but ranked among the bottom eight teams for expected goals. The rest of the data paints a fairly average picture, too.

They sat around the middle of the table for shots, shots in the box and big chances created. We’d perhaps have expected stronger underlying numbers from a side that finished inside the top four.

Aston Villa’s opening fixtures are something of a mixed bag. However, they still rank among the top five teams on our Season Ticker for projected goals over the first six Gameweeks, suggesting they should create plenty of chances despite some tricky opponents.

Champions League football is the main concern. Villa face another demanding schedule this season, and Unai Emery may have to rotate more frequently to keep his squad fresh. That could affect the minutes of several FPL assets over the course of the campaign.

Among Villa’s £5.5m midfielders, John McGinn stands out most. The Scotland international enjoyed another productive season in 2025/26, scoring five goals and providing four assists. That total of nine attacking returns is the best of any player discussed so far in this price bracket.

McGinn also offers several routes to attacking returns. He carries more goal threat than many of the other central midfielders at £5.5m and shares corners and free-kicks, increasing his chances of producing points from set-pieces.

The main drawback comes through the DefCon scoring system. McGinn averaged just over six defensive contributions per 90 minutes last season, well below several of his midfield teammates and many of the alternatives in this price bracket.

There is also a fitness concern to monitor. McGinn picked up an injury during Villa’s recent pre-season schedule, so his availability for Gameweek 1 remains worth keeping an eye on.

THE OTHERS

Several other £5.5m midfielders also warrant consideration ahead of the new campaign.

Brentford’s Mikkel Damsgaard is one to monitor. Minutes remain the biggest question after he started only 24 league matches last season. Even so, he takes corners and returned eight attacking contributions. If he secures a regular starting role, he could quickly emerge as one of the stronger options in this price bracket.

For managers prioritising DefCon points, Leeds United’s Ethan Ampadu stands out. He averaged more than 12 defensive contributions per 90 minutes last season, placing him among the league’s best midfielders in that category. His attacking output was far less convincing, however, with just one goal and one assist.

A similar profile applies to Moisés Caicedo. The Chelsea midfielder averaged more than 12 DefCons per 90 during the 2024/25 campaign and still managed five attacking returns. If he can return to those levels, he could offer excellent value.

Another player who could benefit from increased opportunities is Oscar Bobb. Harry Wilson’s departure leaves room on Fulham’s right flank, and the former Manchester City winger will hope to establish himself as a regular starter. He has yet to translate his talent into consistent attacking returns, but more minutes could change that.

Elsewhere, Adam Wharton, Emile Smith Rowe, Abdul Fatawu, Daizen Maeda, Alexis Mac Allister and Sandro Tonali are all worth monitoring as the season develops.
