The FPL launch understandably dominated our discussions after the 2015/16 game went live yesterday morning. Our community writers and hot topic posters offered valuable advice on every aspect of Fantasy Football, from rule changes to team selection, and from bonus points to getting the funniest team name. Our Members have also been busy constructing tables to help gain a further insight into the players that have the potential to bring the community success in 2015/16.

The Community Articles

Our community writers have timed their articles perfectly this week to ensure they offer the best advice on selecting the perfect FPL side. Bowstring the Trout’s analysis of exactly where teams like to attack is key when debating whether to draft in a central midfielder, striker or winger from a side.

Meanwhile, The Shoemaker has taken a closer look at last season’s bonus point allocation as well as some must-read research into how much initial pricing can indicate whether a player will succeed as a Fantasy prospect.

For The Puntmaster, 2015/16’s new Premier League recruits have caught the eye. His excellent research looks at their performance in other leagues last season to see how they would have fared in England’s top-flight.

Those teams best-suited for a cheap defender rotation strategy have come under Jaffalicious’s microscope, while MatchoftheDan has been looking back on his poor 2014/15 FPL campaign to see how he can improve next season.

The Sky Sports game is also due to launch soon and offers one of the biggest cash prizes in Fantasy Football. For those looking to turn their Fantasy prowess into hard currency, Buffrey presented his top tips for success in the Sky game.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

A key ritual for many Fantasy managers is to attempt to get the lowest ID number possible in FPL. MaxUn1ted proved the fastest on the draw this summer, snatching the coveted number one ID as soon as FPL launched late on Thursday morning.

For those yet to sign up and pick a squad name, we launched a search for the funniest team names, with some particularly cringe worthy puns on display for inspiration.

With teams in place, the community started to get their heads around some crucial rule changes. Chief among these was the ability to use ‘chips’ for one Gameweek only to boost captaincy scores, bring in bench scores and construct an all out attacking line up.

Amongst the ensuing discussions was our post on some potentially lucrative weeks to use your chips outside of the obvious double Gameweeks. Andy85wsm was also on hand to flag up the changes to the game as well as the new deadlines and wildcard changes, which now afford us a wildcard for each half of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Demi offered his early thoughts on some of the player prices. Expensive players, in particular, were the focus of our discussion on the best heavy hitters to draft in.

The 2015/16 FPL also has a number of changes to its Bonus Point System (BPS), which is used to calculate bonus points. Ziegler1988 was among the first to flag up these changes, while in our follow-up discussion on the BPS, we considered how slick passers are set to miss out, while tough tacklers and dynamic centre backs could benefit.

With teams in place, names chosen and new rules assessed, the community then turned its attention to getting the most out of value players through rotation. Doosra took a look at the best three-way rotation for those with a keen eye on fixture combinations. For TeddY, the best goalkeeper combinations available took centre stage, while Giggs Boson was on hand to tell us the best fixtures for potential clean sheets next season.

Other issues to consider in selecting the perfect FPL side are whether a player can benefit from penalties. But according to our discussion the jury is still out as to whether spot-kicks really offer added value to our sides.

Finally, this week also saw the launch of our Members area RMT and Projections tools. As our discussion on RMT scores submitted so far showed, finding the right teaam balance is proving a tricky task.

The Members Tables

To help understand how the changes to FPL’s BPS will effect players chance of gaining bonus points D1sable has constructed this table looking at the toughest tacklers. While Doosra has made this table looking at another area of change, pass completion, as well as tackling and players’ disciplinary record.

For those specifically interested in how some of the top defenders in the game will be affected by the BPS change, I have updated my Arsenal and Chelsea tables to include tackling, CBI and passing statistics.

Another change to the BPS involves greater recognition of goalkeeper saves. Barryyuen’s table provides a timely look at last season’s top savers. By switching to 2013/14’s figures this gives a good indication of Norwich keeper John Ruddy’s potential for extra points.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

I think people are looking too much into the BPS of saves for the Goalkeepers.

A Goalkeeper usually makes 4-5 saves on an average in a game, so that only means 4-5 more BPS than what they got in last year's system.

That's no way near enough to get Bonus Points. These will only matter when Goalies actually make something around 7-9 saves if anything, which happens like once a season if anything.

Goals and assists are still the kings!

I feel the same on the big defenders

bear in mind that in the even of a CS 4-5 more BPS could be the difference between 1-2 BAPs and 0

Big keepers are still not worth it

Yeah JK. And I also think it's not worth going for goalkeepers of teams that concede a lot of shots.

Take Panti's example. He averaged 3.96 saves per game**. We'll obviously round it off to 4 for calculations.

That's just 4 BPS extra per game, nowhere enough to gain Bonus Points. Yeah the Arsenal game where he made so many saves, he'd definitely be getting a few Bonus points there, but then that's it. If anything he'd be getting 3-4 more bonus points last season in the new system. Not a lot, yeah?

** I saw Red Lighting's comment here about him averaging 3.96 saves per game

Those extra 4 BPS were probably enough to get him bonus in the Sunderland-Leicester match. I remember PVA had a good score and then Jones got two baps with a pedestrian one. Of course that's before increased BPS for the greater weight of CBI

We can't really conclude unless we have the full stats of the game, but how much would he get anyway? 1, 2 if we're really lucky (though 4 BPS getting 2 from 0 seems like a long shot really)

              http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/05/16/the-scoreboard-gameweek-37-saturday-2/

So from 0 to 2 baps (discounting possible increase in BPS for Jones and Coates)

                But then there's this..

2 CBIs is 1 BPS instead of 3 CBIs
Successful tackle is worth 2 BPS instead of 1

From another site that uses OPTA stats, I got this...

                Billy Jones in that game - CBI = 7, Tackles won = 4. Increase in BPS = 1 + 4 = 5

                Coates - CBI = 13, Tackles won = 3. Increase in BPS = 2 + 3 = 5

Seems like Panti still wouldn't have made it..

                  10 years, 5 months ago

Yeah, it would have been closer I think though. You need to factor in tackles lost since it's net successful

                    10 years, 5 months ago

Ah yes, they lost one tackle each. That's 2 BPS less for both.

In this case, Panti gets 26, Coates get 28 and Jones gets 29 and PvA would obviously go over 30.

It's hilarious fun with friends online, the only problem is the servers are often down. It's a small indie team dealing with huge numbers of players (as its free on ps+ and people like it) and they are struggling to keep up with the demand. Don't let that put you off, though. It's great fun. You can always play it offline against bots but online is where it really shines.

Yup. And don't take a Spurs fan's word on him. He was on the verge of French NT before a move to Spurs ruined his career. To say he "did nothing" is absolutely dim. Most active and best tackler of the team, by some distance, add to that 2.2 interceptions per 90 minutes, and positive fouled-fouling difference which is exceptional for a DM. Definitely _did_ a lot, and a lot of good things too. Going to be a good addition to Watford, and therefore very likely a nailed on player for 4.5, who supports attack pretty well and will be a bap magnet if he gets to the score sheet or score is low. Not going to be on scoresheet too often, though, so you should be happy with 2 pointers from bench.

Even though I have him and I don't even know who he is, Old School is right.

Though in my defense, he gets into a very good defensive side at the back at 5.0 and seems nailed on. So, not entirely true maybe? 😛

As defenders get points from the efforts of not just themselves, but the effort of their team, I think it's reasonable to put in a player you don't know about, and rely on the other players + manager to get you points.

Don't get it myself. Too much disruption in the Southampton defence, I'd sooner give them a while to settle first. Fixtures are good though.

My choice of Cedric was simple

      a) Put Ivan
      b) open season ticker
      c) filter by clean sheets
      d) pick defenders that rotate well

      SOT, LEI, SUN, BOU

great rotation and score highly on the ticker

I've watched him in the Portuguese league and I think he's good...pretty rash with tackles though, so while he'll get some good ones in (60-70%) he's a yellow card magnet

Top 5 points per million based on last season points and this season price.

    Sorted by position : http://i.imgur.com/ufi6pCz.png

Sorted by points per million : http://i.imgur.com/XdwoRhc.png

    - 2 rotating pair of playing GK could do nicely, especially with GK heavy in saves points.
    - DEF offer a lot value in points per million than MID or FWD.
    - Some interesting players from the list : (GK) Fabianski, Speroni - (DEF) Jagielka, Lescott - (MID) Downing, Ki, Brunt - (FWD) Kane, Diouf.
    - Kane still offer some value despite people consider him as pricey pick.

    * Interpret is as you will.
** Obviously without new signing and promoted clubs.

I stopped paying attention to Spurs towards the end of the season since i had Kane on autopilot and dint bother watching them.. i have this very faint memory of CS's at the tail end of the season though. Did that really happen? i know players like Eriksen, Lamela et al struggled with Pochettinos system early on and their total lack of defensive duties cost them. did it really improve at the end? basically i want to know if Toby could be worth 5 million considering he is now gonna be alongside Vertonghen. Not to mention Trippier joining(though i'm still unsure if that's a good thing).
So a punt on Toby @5.. Yes or No?

Never played in the EPL though... and for a million more you can get last year's big hitters. and for a million less the Crystal Palace boys..
Payet has been very awkwardly priced tbh. in other seasons 7.5 could be a steal.. this season i'm not so sure. I wanted to take a punt on Coutinho/Mane but them being around the same price as Ozil/Yaya/Mata etc has ruined that for me
