With the new season now less than two weeks away, our community Hot Topics were full of the latest pre-season information on likely starting XIs and formations. The community discussions also took in the evolution of the Fantasy Premier League game over the years, while our community writers focused on getting the most from our backlines. We look back on the week’s activity, whilst also assessing some of the latest Members area tables and showcasing the array of community competitions being set up ahead of the campaign kick-off.

The Community Articles

Defence was a key issues tackled by our community writers, with Patch making the case for investing more heavily in Fantasy backlines, while Mouldmaster looked at the prospects of a 13.5m three way defensive rotation.

Elsewhere, Saniul offered his view on Brendan Rodgers’ likely set-up as the Liverpool revolution continued apace with the signing of Christian Benteke.

This week saw us bring you a brand new game to the pages of Fantasy Football Scout, as the draft-based Dugout FC earned a shout-out. As it happened, earlier in the week The Cisco Kid underlined the appeal of draft games and leagues.

Finally, our resident team sheet expert Demi delivered this article on the best team forums and Twitter sources for getting the inside track on starting team news straight from the fans and journos.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The pre-season itinerary of many Premier League sides picked up this week, helping to shed some more light on probable starters and formations.

Luckily, many of our resident community team experts were on hand to keep tabs on these matches. Amongst our busy scouts was Do The Van Gaal-Lem Shake, who dropped by to deliver this report on yesterday’s friendly clash between Manchester United and Barcelona. He paid close attention to the evolving partnership between Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay, which was something Mark was keen to get the community’s views on earlier in the week.

Aquafresca has also been keeping up to date on United’s pre-season fixtures and drafted this report on the Red Devils’ victory over Club America earlier in the week.

Berbinho’s Forehead’s report on Liverpool’s preparations in Australia is essential reading for those considering drafting in James Milner, while Dusan Citizen has also travelled down under to reveal that Samir Nasri is unlikely to disappear quietly in the face of rotation.

A little closer to home, Bowstring the Carp took an in-depth look at Watford’s away victory over German side Paderborn last weekend.

Pre-season friendly line-ups have also been under the watchful gaze of Couti and the Below5th as he revealed his latest update to his excellent probable starters research.

Another top researcher in the week gone by was Magic Hamster, who has been looking to see how the Rate My Team requests submitted by the community have changed as pre-season fixtures shed more light on favoured players.

Meanwhile, Lucy has used her local knowledge of Southampton to assess the south coast side’s likely starters for the forthcoming season – the essential go-to thread for those considering Ronald Koeman’s charges.

The extent to which pre-season friendlies effect our Fantasy squad selections was discussed by Andy85wsm, who was amongst our moderator and contributor team to help with the daily discussions while I was sunning myself on the Cornish coast this week.

Andy85wsm’s other daily Hot Topics this week included this discussion on how to deal with Sergio Aguero’s likely absence from Gameweek 1’s team sheet, the prospects of success for Christian Benteke at Liverpool, the importance of team balance, which of Arsenal’s many excellent midfield players to choose and the latest players to join the FPL player list this week.

Another FFScout moderator to chip in with our daily hot topic discussions was Ryan, who was interested in the effect of ownership on our squad decisions and whether the price baseline for cheap defenders has been subject to inflation this year.

Elsewhere, Epic Fail sparked this debate on the often used tag of ‘essential’ for players and Wolverine took a look at top tips for gaining a good start.

Understanding the latest rule changes in FPL, namely the introduction of new ‘chips’ to boost captaincy, bench and attacking player points, is going to be key to success this season. Knowing when potential double Gameweeks could fall will be crucial to using these chips well, according to Jairzinho. We also asked what your dream chip would be to help gain an advantage in future seasons.

The introduction of chips is just the latest innovation for FPL over its many years, as we discovered during Skool Daze’s FPL veteran quiz. This brought back happy memories of the days when Everton’s Steve Watson was near essential, while Innsie’s discussion on weird captaincy choices also took at look at Fantasy football’s oddball heroes and villains from the game’s past.

There have been a myriad of strange captaincy choices made by our Scoutcast hosts Mark and Granville over the years. Pukka popped by to see if the community would be able to help in their decision making, particularly with their annual Scoutcast team’s prospects.

The Members Tables

For those looking to assess Arsenal’s attacking options in more detail, Head2headwin has compiled this table of their performance during the final six weeks of last season. Meanwhile, Vougiedipond has created this Missed Opportunities table looking at Premier League stars’ most embarrassing statistics.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

There were a raft of tournament organisers on hand to tell us about their leagues and head to head competitions for the community to take part in. Here is a full list of those taking place, which includes Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing (FPL code 13343-18364), Hulky Punter’s Bloodbath League (FPL code 168077-145950) and The Sarjeant’s Lads on Toure league (FPL code 1866-7724).

Torres Magic has also published this community article, as a guide to his particular tournament.

I agree and disagree, finding a good defense can be hard at first but once a team establishes itself and has a good fixture theyre a good choice and you can pick any and they should get similar points of that team
When it comes to attackers...you even have to pick with the team

Okay so this is my first time posting an RMT and kind of walking through my thought process so any helpful comments would be very much appreciated

    Schmeichel (Hennessey)
    Azpi Cedric Williams Huth Saylor
    Hazard Ozil Cazorla Depay Anya
    Sakho Costa Pelle

So with keepers I probably will hear some criticism for it being too light but believe me i've heard it all. I hate rotating keepers because even against a tough opponent you can freakishly rack up tons of faves. Every year i've played the game i've gone with one cheap keeper and with BPS increased for keepers, one with a solid backline that is still porous enough for plenty of saves like Leicester I think will be perfect for Schmeichel to earn a role in my team, and decent fixtures dont hurt either. Hennessey is more of a hope that he becomes No.1 at WBA. if he doesn't ill swap for Hamer to avoid a potential price drop

With Defense some may say a little light but honestly I like it. Azpi is simple, Chelsea Defense is reliable and I think Mou will want no nonsense in a likely tougher year this one. Cedric is a slight interesting one, but Saints have great fixtures honestly and some may say they've sold too much to be resilient at the back again. But after last year's overhaul and even an increase in reliability, i trust the saints, i trust Koeman and with those fixtures even I think they could even stumble into some cleansheets without trying. Williams and Huth will rotate that 3rd defender spot for me. Some have raised their eyebrows at Leicester doubling at the back but I have faith even with the Tinkerman they'll show more of latter season than the beginning. Plus with a rotation like this and a very qualified defender like Williams, i'm ensured only good fixtures at a cheap price. Saylor is simply a 4.0 filler that hopefully will play eventually and help me out once in a blue moon, decided not to have Targett because of his likely price drop and brief spot as starter.

With midfield im really starting to like it over here: Hazard i feel is self explanatory so ill move on. Depay i've been following for a while now and with how he looks in pre-season action and what i saw in the eredivisie i expect an explosive start and an explosive season(s) to come. Ozil with his first real preseason before a PL season will be ready to rumble in an arsenal side that will come out with a vengeance early, similar reason to why i have cazorla (though I have less faith in him and could be swapped by seasons' start to another 8.5)

With forwards i'm currently happy with what i've got even if it's a little unorthodox
I think Costa is a little self explanatory - A top forward in THE top team as well as a bit of a filler for Kun I think will do well early on and justifies his price tag. Sakho is my favorite budget striker especially with those fixtures and numbers coming out of last season, but i will be quick to jump on a cheap bandwagon at striker if it should appear. And now comes the big one, I've taken Pelle over Bentek because i've convinced myself Benteke will start slow. I think Pelle after a great pre-season will come out on fire with something to prove after a weak end of last season and with those fixtures I honestly think good things are in store for the Italian

Oh boy that was a little on the long side, sorry about that
Would still appreciate feedback if you're all willing
If not have a good night anyways haha
If I dont respond i've probably fallen asleep and will see in the morning but after writing this all out im a little eager to see any responses

Hamer's already left the FPL building, and Saylor's prolly dropped off the radar now Toon have bought a new defender. Anya's very uncertain of starting with all Watford's new recruits. I'm contemplating starting with 2 Arse midfielder's but it's a huge risk.

I half agree with 2xArse Mid risk part, I'm a firm believe there's no such thing as coverage when it comes to attack and that to me means that Ozil and Caz are different players in a high scoring team and will score different points and I thnk thats fine because both are top class and should hopefully score well

It doesn't matter. NTFM explained that he'll be starting Schmeichel every game. If Henny moves it's a bonus but the main point of a 4.0 keeper is to fill the bench.

I actually have considered that interesting that you mention that mate, I was looking at O'Shea in for Williams so that I could do Cazorla > Sterling or Walcott and while that got shot down when I proposed it on here earlier it seems like with 2 on this thread saying that...maybe that's the way I should go?

I think with azpi and cedric playing every week, you dont need a 9.5 rotation alongside it, even if u wanna play 4 at the back both lei and sun have great fixtures. I would personally bank the 0.5 making it much easier to downgrade an 8.5 mid to get aguero as the 7m bracket has great options like hendo, milner, chadli and ayew just to name a few

I've considered that bracket and that's definitely a thought i've had an just might do
I think as it stands i'll have Sterling and Costa (if i do that defensively) to begin the season but you're definitely right that for just two transfers, I could bring in Kun and Milner for that pair when the time is right

If what is stopping you from getting crsc is Costa, you can downgrade him to Rooney. Chelsea have quite a difficult start apart from gw1, I think most the goals will come from set pieces, thus my insistence on cesc. Also Costa usually gets withdrawn early especially now with falcao and he foesnt really do braces and hat-tricks.,..... Well unless its against seansea or everton.

Given gw1-3 i think rooney should outscore him comfortably

Not sure I really agree, I think Costa will do well and is firmly in my side because of it but I guess thats just a slight difference of opinion

Yeah its okay to disagree, i was just saying that costa is leaving in gw4 anyway so might as well go with rooney instead

But lets agree to disagree, i would definetly recommend downgrading williams though.

dont trust lei enough. schemichel --> fabianski/panti/mignolet would be an upgrade imo. i prefer koscielny over azpi with 6.0 or would try to fit them both. midfield is as good as it gets, though you can play with fire and go with fab over hazard in the beginning hoping fab starts with a boom. eventually i agree hazard is a better pick, before christmas fab -> haz surely. forwards nice, plenty of options there: rooney, giroud..

I think i'll stick with Haz over Fab, believe me i've researched that one a lot, even debunking for myself the myth that Haz always starts slow
I know Schmeichel being upgrade would help the side but I think to fine that .5 would take too much away from the rest of my side
I've tried to fit Kosc in there too but I think for me a Chelsea defender just makes like easier (though I very well could put Kosc or Mert in for Azpi and replace Caz with Fab, that's something i've definitely)

I really appreciate the advice though, definitely gets me thinking and responding, every offered tweak helps

Honestly In my side none of Hennessey, Anya or Saylor will ever play so i'm not too worried about them as I feel in an emergency mid-GW Anya or my 4th defender can pick up some compensation points
Pelle is my punt with those dreamy fixtures, I think he'll start well, completely nailed and has Koeman's trust

Do we really think Arsenal will sign a new striker? If it wasn't for that I'd be pretty keen on getting Giroud. Anyone have any idea on Wenger's thinking there?

    1. thorvaldsson
      • 13 Years
      10 years, 4 months ago

These two recent performances pre season were like auditions. One for the proven striker(Giroud) and the other a reward and experiment for a potential striker (Walcott). I think Giroud gets the nod. At some point physicality and aerial ability has to come into frame. Though Arsenal aren’t notorious crossers the option to put a cross is there with Giroud. That is my only feeling, why I think the Frenchman gets the nod.

I think getting Giroud is still viable, plenty of options below his 9.0 mil price if you need to make a move. Fixtures are tasty to start as well (from an attacking stand point)

I like the idea of benching 1/3 each week early on. I think its practical as we'll know who the big budged bandwagons are and we can jump on the right one. The selection also looks good on the whole. Mane looks nailed so no risk there but there are slight question marks over Ki, Ritchie and Benteke with regards to mehness for Ki and adjustment issues for the others.

Not at all... It is Haz vs Sterling + 2.5.
The player that is paired with Haz is Chadli (7) for 18.5 total, so the player paired with Sterling (9) can be anyone up to 9.5, which would include all except Haz (11.5), Sanchez (11) and Silva (10).
Such as Mata (8.5), Fab (9), etc.

Do we trust LVG enought to go with a United option other than Rooney? Not sure he knows who his best 11 is.. So lets do a small poll.
Who do you think is the safest for minutes in the United attack over the first 4/5 fixtures? Not talking about potential for points.. just more minutes over the first 4/5 fixtures
Rooney>Mata>Depay>Young for me .. though tbh if pedro signs it'll be just Rooney i'll be sure about

With an ADM replacement likely to be signed (eg Pedro) I think anyone other than Rooney is at risk.

I'll attempt to determine who is the least risky of the attacking midfield options. Depay is an LVG signing and has adjusted well with a good working relationship with Rooney. Mata is class as we know so should keep a start and is getting better on the RW. I'd wager that Depay and Mata are the main contenders with Young most at risk, both from a change in formation to 433 with Depay on the LW and from a new signing like Pedro.

If Pedro does come I can see a rotation nightmare possibly unfolding where one of Mata, Pedro and Depay could be benched every week if LVG goes back to a 433. They should all be safe if they stick to a 4231 though.

You mean their predictions for highest scorer in each position and at different price points? I love reading that.. it's fun looking back at the season end and seeing who was right and who got it horribly wrong 🙂

So, who thinks McCarthy will be Palace main keeper?

eventually. Not now perhaps. Still keeping him. The most promising(to start) 4.0M keeper out there

I like going with a big three up top. This year it has made the rest of the team look a bit light. I have an Aguero strategy, which involves 2 free transfers. I would be grateful for any thoughts you may have on this team:

Courtois (Hennessey) - I have this for Chelsea cover. I can move to a 4.5/4.5 rotation.
    Mertesacker, Cedric, Huth, Francis/Mings, 4.0
Hazard, Cazorla, Chadli, Ritchie and 4.5
    Costa, Rooney and Pelle

    1. Grand Thibauto
      • 10 Years
      10 years, 4 months ago

4.5 4.5 or 5.0-4.5/4 rotation and upgrade merte to azpi/iva. And 4.0 def to 4.5.

      1. Zareos
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

I would like to do this, but I'd be 0.5 under for Azpi because I am not confident of any 4.0 goalie who will play.

If those three do not get you at least three goals in game week 1, then you will know that you have wasted your funds.

If a Deeney/Wilson proves themselves in GW1, I plan to move for them. For the time being I think going for tried and tested forwards is funds well spent.

Great team, I like the Courtois and Pelle difs. Might consider Pelle myself - didn't realise the Sou fixtures are so good. Only changes I would suggest as an option is Courtois to Ruddy, Chadli to Ozil and Per to Sakko.

why does everyone weigh goalies 2 in this formula for 10? your forwards give you some 500 points across the season and you weigh them the same as goalies who'll get you 160 pts at best. please.

        x/3

remember that there's not a best possible team, there are plenty. your choices dont need to please everyone. someone will always try to convince player x is better than player y because they have player x. for example, not much between azpi or kosc for 6.0. or caz & özil, rooney & costa. so many variations which are basically equally good

They say you create your own luck.

I would not call him an idiot as his Filoshofee got us playing some good stuff towards the end of the season.

Over the past few years, even under SAF, I can't remember having outplayed Chelsea & Liverpool in their own backyards.

Given time and allowed to build his own squad, he will do very well imo

He'll be more willing at least. ADM always had his heart set on PSG and its already clear things haven't gone well at United for him since Young took back his starting spot.

DiM's off, and Young isn't Neymar - hardly code for the chop. Unless they do bring in Ronaldo in the next 7 days, I'd say Young has every chance of starting GW1, even if he lasts no longer than he did last season.

Suggest the blank spots with the budget given. Thanks in Advance.

P.S. 4.5 rotation will be nice with Huth maybe
