The World Cup continues to dominate the Fantasy Football Scout Community as the Group Stages end and we head into the knockout rounds.

Strategies for dealing with elimination from World Cup Fantasy Round of 16 onwards have been discussed in our Hot Topics, while some of you were able to avoid the frustrating rotation in Round 3 with some smart thinking.

We’ve got more tables to bring you to help plan for the next round of the World Cup, and we’ve got an update from our array of community competitions.

The Hottest Topics

Not surprisingly, one of our earliest Hot Topics this week warned us of heavy rotation in Gameround 3 of World Cup Fantasy – which is exactly what we got in the end. In an attempt to pre-empt the inevitable changes to starting line-ups, Siva Mohan presented us with a list of players walking the suspension tightrope. Both of those subjects shaped the discussion on chip strategy for the round too.

The assist policy on McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy game was a much debated subject this week, as it differs considerably to what we’re used to with FPL. Legomane went over the goals scored in Uruguay’s 3-0 win over Russia to find out what you think of the two systems.

With team selection for the Last 16 opening up on McDonald’s game much was made of the price changes. 420king went over how they were caluclated while we asked how much money Fantasy managers had gained from the various increases throughout the game.

As the knockout stages are upon us, strategies to navigate the potential minefield of losing Fantasy assets to elimination were an important talking point. The deployment of chips formed a big part of that discussion, while captain tactics were too.

Amid all the World Cup action, we must not forget about Eliteserien. Legomane asked the community this week what their plans were for Gameweek 14 – this is what they said. Later on we asked you how you were hoping to handle Gameweek 15.

We have been also discussing the World Cup aside from Fantasy concerns. VAR has been a big talking point, with ZoumasBloomers starting a discussion about the benefits of the new technology. Meanwhile, we asked you to tell us your favourite World Cup moments so far and to make some predictions – this is what you said.

Community Tables

Those who are completely overhauling their World Cup Fantasy squads for the Round of 16 are in luck once again, as J0E has created two more very helpful tables and there’s Warwick’s Table as well.

The first one, entitled World Cup Sharp Shooters, sorts players by various aspects of their goal threat, suggesting that several premium forwards may be required in our squads for the knockout stages.

How profligate Germany were in their three Group F matches is highlighted in more detail in J0E’s other table, World Cup Chancers. This compares players on their chances of assisting and, aside from pointing out the Germans’ problems, demonstrates how dangerous Brazil will be in the latter stages of the World Cup.

Elsewhere, Warwick’s Table has been assessing the potential shown by players in Russia this summer.

Community Tournaments

With the World Cup Group Stages completed we’ve had time to have look at how our two McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy mini-leagues are getting on.

Niemi is currently leading the way in the Mods and Cons mini-league but has fierce competition elsewhere in the top five:

  1. Niemi (186 points)
  2. Legomane (183 points)
  3. Mat Williams (182 points)
  4. Gregor (174 points)
  5. David Munday (167 points)

As for our public league, there are some excellent scores in our top five:

  1. Hurrikane (220 points)
  2. Pascalevans (218 points)
  3. Eunuch999 (214 points)
  4. Tommobhoy (211 points)
  5. Kudin_88 (210 points)
  6. Lincon316 (210 points)

Frøgball, which uses combined Fantasy scores to represent different nations, threw up some rather interesting alternative World Cup results as the Group Stages ended. Find the latest update HERE.

Congratulations to Thes7s who was the clear winner of Jarvish‘s World Cup themed Yes/No game, with a score of seven. Beginning the game by only getting one of the first four questions correct, Thes7s successfully answered the final six in a row to become the champion.

If you are running a community tournament or are thinking about starting one, and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet, or head to head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

    RMT

    Courtois - Armani

    Ramos - Carvajal - Miranda - Lovren - Akanji

    Coutinho - Isco - Carrasco - Quintero - Bentancur

    Ronaldo - Lukaku - Griezmann

      It's different.

But not necessarily bad. I wouldn't get Bentancur. Better off with pure fodder like Sanchez. Armani is kinda insane but could be amazing if Argentina play the game of their lives (which I'm betting they won't and will get knocked out).

All in all decent. I'd do Bentancur > Sanchez, Akanji > Granqvist.

I would like to have some gk who plays before Belgium and Armani was the cheapest one who could get clean sheet.

If your keepers both make it thru, you'll have 2x day 1 GK's next round (assuming no WC?)

    Day of rest nearly over.

All I want tomorrow is for Argentina to beat France. Argentina have been a bit average but nobody can deny they have had plenty of fight in them....France on the other hand.

I think I'm done with tinkering until France - Argentina lineups are out. Does it look ok?

    Muslera - Sommer
    Granqvist - Lovren - Strinic - Trippier - Miranda
    Coutinho - Modric - Isco - Claesson - Quintero
    Lukaku - Costa - Kane

There has to be a differential or sleeper pick here that I'm not seeing, is it really that sparse at midfield?

Midfield options in this game are awful. We knew this right from the start. Imagine if they had Hazard and Silva as mids... Isco + Coutinho are basically required since there are no other actual genuinely good attacking options. Throw in Quintero and that's 3/5 that are basically sure locks.

Agreed. It could have been a lot more fun if they had categorised them better. Particularly SIlva as forward is ridicuolous. Somehow Muller midfielder

          Moses, Iwobi, Reus, etc.
It's just basically forwards and defenders

This. Someone will emerge though. Possibly Alli or Lingard ahead of QF if they are fortunate enough to beat Colombia.

the only possible differentials I'm seeing is Rakitic, Lingard, Shaq - although he's pretty template as well and maybe Pogba who's a major gamble, anyone else?

Daresay a fair few have Pogba. He's the most expensive player in history, afterall. Maybe someone like Henderson if you want a true diferential.

They screwed up the midfield by making just about every premium attacking player a forward.

Two (or three) from Isco, Coutinho and Modric just looks like a total no-brainer.

I like this quite a lot. Inui is a bit dead so would prefer you just went Sanchez and save the 0.2m, but the rest of the team is solid throughout. What's your plan if Pavard doesn't start?

      Switzerland + Brazil

Switzerland are very underrated. They are still unbeaten this tournament and they haven't been beaten in 24 competitive games or something really long like that.

Brazil - Belgium is definitely close, but I just think a tiny bit more team spirit from Brazil puts them through. Belgium still had that Nainggolan scandal lingering and if they go behind they'll implode.

All of those could score good points...or being as it's just a game of odds then they could all bomb.

      Keep it...it's good.

I haven't taken part in this years Word Cup FF but I'm now thinking of setting up a team now. I know it might be frowned upon as I will have 2 WCs and all the Chips available..I won't enter my team if I know the Kia is at stake for some

      Nope, the manager loves him:

Fernando Hierro also suggested that Diego Costa will be the starting striker again, as he was against Portugal, Iran and Morocco: "If there are more changes in the team you will see, but Diego Costa has played all three matches and has scored three. That's the answer to the question."

i do fancy him against that aging Argie back line. He should def be a handful for Mascherano. It's now or never for him really as the next fixtures wont be as easy. I say if you have WC go for it!

I am right in saying that you are currently top of the FFS minileague?

Have you used many of your chips so far?

You are indeed. I have used both wildcard and bench boost. Wildcard was a success due to dirching all england/belgium assets.

Bench boost on the other hand gained me the grand total of 1 point. Dont feel too bad as im still convinced it's a pretty useess chip in this format.

You are still in with a great chance and have the Max Captain chip, that have to be worth something on your bomb run.

Have you thought much about how you are going to approach the last 16 as in employ strategy or just go off the cuff and your gut?

Definitley hoping max cap is mucb more handy.

I think in general I will stick to my core of 'who do I think is going to score the most points'.

Also think I will try and have a half decent bench. I'm unconvinced by all midfield options bar cout, so happy to spread the money around there and use the sunstitutions to give me 2/3 chances of gettng some points.

Go on then, how many inches? 😉

4 on any team is probably overkill at the mo. One upset and you've already lost all your free transfers

I'm about 20 points of overall number 1 I believe. You make a good point, but I'm very tempted by the idea of carrying 4 England players into a very favourable quater final. Nobody ever won by being conservative! (Disclaimer - they probably did..)
