Best Southampton players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

After four successive top-half finishes, each achieved as their best players (and the occasional manager) were picked off by “bigger” clubs, Southampton diced with death in 2017/18.

A run of one win in 21 fixtures between late-November and the end of April left the Saints in the relegation zone with just four matches to spare, before Mark Hughes steered the club to Premier League safety with victories over Bournemouth and Swansea City.

Hughes’ appointment in March not only sparked an upturn in form but also led to a change of system, with the Welshman ditching Mauricio Pellegrino’s 4-2-3-1 in favour of a 3-4-2-1 – the repercussions of which for Fantasy managers we will discuss later.

Southampton assets weren’t a reliable source of points for Fantasy Premier League bosses last season: of the current squad, only Ryan Bertrand broke the 100-point barrier.

Charlie Austin‘s campaign was, once again, hampered by injury, while frequent rotation in the centre-back positions (not one centre-half made more than 30 starts) meant that the likes of Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens proved to be undependable budget defensive picks.

Not that the Saints’ defence was an attractive proposition anyway – only Bournemouth and Stoke City kept fewer clean sheets in the Premier League than Southampton (eight) last season.

That Austin, who made only ten starts and 14 substitute appearances, finished as the Saints’ leading league goal-scorer on seven goals said a lot about Southampton’s struggles in the opposition box, too.

The south coast club’s decent-looking opening run of fixtures this season – Burnley (h), Everton (a), Leicester City (h), Crystal Palace (a), Brighton and Hove Albion (h) – are inviting from a Fantasy perspective, but the Saints’ woes last season are evidently still at the forefront of many FPL managers’ minds; Cedric Soares is the only Southampton player who currently has a double-digit ownership.

In-depth data on Southampton’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

I was hoping FPL would increase the amount of mini leagues one could enter for this season to reflect how popular the game is after getting.

You just have to be selective of what mini leagues you are entering and chose quality over quantity. 😉

Wait for more friendlies and Community Shield before deciding. If nailed, he will be great value but I doubt he will be. They rejected 65M for Willian - surely that means he will start.

Not even close, Willian is first choice by a mile and sources claim that Sarri doesn't like Pedro. All this after a friendly against some Ozzie farmers is a bit insane even for FFS.

    Some context before my question:

    Ederson (Steele)
    Otamendi Coleman PvA Douglas (Bednarek)
    Salah Sanchez Mahrez Jota Cairney
    Aguero (Quaner, Kamara)

I really want to work Robertson into my team in place of Otamendi (has to be, as I have four City players atm)... anybody got any ideas where to reinvest the 0.5m? I feel like it should be my bench but 5.0 doesn't really buy you anything more than 4.5 in terms of strikers imo.

      Pva->Tomkins +1.0
      Coleman->Keane +0.5
      Sanchez->Sane +1.0

The 3.0 profit can give you a 7m forward or upgrade Cairney to Ramsey.

LIV opening: WHU cry BHA lei

Possibly, but I feel like giving him and ARS the time to prove themselves in the first 2 tough matches, while I'll have had personal experience with Aguero and Firmino who by then will have played 3 easier matches in total (WHU HUD cry).
I think Lacazette won't be too bad, so my idea is to do Firmino->Lacazette after gw2.

Thoughts on this team with probably too much money on the bench for most?

    Rui - Hamer
    Davies - Mendy - Robertson - Bailly - TAA
    Salah - Mahrez - Lamela - Maddison - Neves
    Aboomerang - Arnie - Sørloth

Cant believe Im letting you guys know my secret team recipe, but Im starved for thoughts and comments 🙂

My thought process is that 1 out of those defenders + Mahrez will probably be rotated every week so I need a good bench. Lamela is of course a short term player.

      You'll be playing 5-at-the-back?

...and playing one of Madison, Sorloth, Neves, Lamela each week?

      I actually quite like it

Possibly get Coleman or PVA in for TAA for Everton/CPL's nice fixtures, take Sorloth down to 4.5m (Quaner/Kamara)

Zaha might be a better pick than Arnie early doors

      1. Brosstan
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

Yes 5 at the back but all of Davies, TAA and to a lesser extent Mendy and Robertson are rotation risks who will play probably 3/4 games. So it will often be 4-4-2 in practice. The first gameweek for instance TAA is very likely not playing.

Sørloth is the player Im most likely to remove. Either for someone who looks more nailed at 4.5 or 5.0, or just to have the 0.5 in the bank so its easier to ditch Lamela with one transfer. Im keen on Gross as a long term player.

Why Hamer as the 4.0m keeper, out of interest?

Fringe scenario but I think Huddersfield is the least likely team where I could potentially be in a situation where I would want 3 players outside of the backup GK. Otherwise I would probably have Speroni.

Too many punts for my liking. May only have 1 playing defender in Robertson.

Davies has Rose who appears fit following injury last season
Think Pep will use 3-5-2 this season and reckon Sane/Mendy will rotate quite often.
Will Bailly play when Jones/Lindelof come back? Also talks of them signing a new CB
TAA had a great season but I imagine he'll play less this year and given more opportunities in midfield as this is where he wants to play

Yea its a bit punty but my thinking is I have to be incredibly unlucky for more than 2 of the defenders to get rotated the same week. And even then I will be able to have 3 bench players coming on, with one of them being an actual good player and the others also having some potential instead of being Stephens, Masuaku etc

Not convinced on Madison or Bailly. Alright apart from that. Solid 7/10

I like the idea, but what's the likelihood of those wingbacks coming on for 5-10 mins cameos though?

I havent checked the numbers but my feeling is that happens relatively rarely. Its more often fringe midfielders and forwards who get brought on late, and if a defender is brought on its most often a youngster when the team is already winning, not an established WB who is getting rested/rotated.

This is why you should've kept your team a secret! 😉

Think I’m almost set on my team but this is causing me a dilemma:

    A) Mahrez and Deulofeu

    Or

    B) Willian and Mkhitaryan

Can't wait for Schürrle to join the midprice midfield clusterf***. So many options there.

If you could pick the right ones, Salah plus 4 x 6.5m mids in a 3-5-2 could be epic

Oh totally. You could probably have two of Kun/Kane/Auba and three relatively heavy defenders too.

Hi all how does this look out of 10?
Going on the assumption that Morata stays and another CF isn't signed 0.5 in bank to possibly upgrade Mata to Lingard after the first few weeks.
    Ederson
    Bailly, Shaw, Tomkins (Cedric) (Peltier)
    Mkhitaryan, Mane, Mata Sane (Stephens)
    Firmino, Morata, Aguero

Any feedback at all would be appreciated. Thank you

    I am fairly set on:
    1) Keeping 0.5-1M ITB in the start of the season to enable flexibility
    2) Go without Salah
    3) Don't plan for any transfers (i.e. have Arsenal players in the start)

I had Richarlison even when he was at Watford. Current team is:

    Foster
    Bailly - Bellerin - Wan-Bissaka
    Sané - Mahrez - Mané - Ramsey - Richarlison
    Agüero - Morata

    (Patricio, Leujune - Peltier, Kamara)

Team hasn't changed much since a week back, so I'm quite happy, but please tear it apart...

Don't like the Morata pick. Perhaps Vardy instead.

If you want a Chelsea player I would go for Willian as my choice. Sacrificing Ramsey

Yep, Sarri will work on his end product and even last season he only got one less goal and one less assist than Groß in 1000 less minutes. Gold dust.

Are any of the 5.0 strikers going to be guaranteed starters? Can't for the life of me see any difference between those priced at 4.5 and those at 5.0. Listed below for your convenience:

Mousett (BOU), Hemed + Andone (BHA), Zahore (CAR), Sorloth + Wickham (CRY), Kachunga (HUD), Solanke (LIV), Joselu (NEW), Long (SOU), Okaka (WAT), Hugill (WHU), Bonatini (WOL).

Zohore or Andone most likely, Zohore nailed as far as I know and Andone won't have come to Brighton unless he's fairly sure of a starting berth.

Zohore is a horrible player, though.
Talks about Sorloth starting, but today's friendly would indicate that he won't.

If you own Salah, Firmino is poor value. Discuss. (25)

This, unless you're calculating Firmino's value as a captain without Salah

Taking away the option of captaincy from a player over 9m decreases their value for me so was interested to see what others would say. His likely output of 180 points is not special enough to be worth 2.5m over Arnie/ Tosun/ Zaha/ Mkhi or 2m over the 7.5m mids if you're never going to captain him, which is pretty much impossible if you own Salah. Premium options need to be captaincy options for me or the money is better spent and spread elsewhere.
