We are delighted to announce Fantasy Football book ‘Wasting Your Wildcard‘ has now been released.

Written by regular site contributor David Wardale and fully endorsed by Fantasy Football Scout, it should help you plug the painful gap between the end of the World Cup and start of the 2018/19 Premier League season, which is not far away now.

Subtitled ‘The Method and Madness of Fantasy Football’, the book is being published by Penguin’s respected sports imprint, Yellow Jersey Press, and is packed with hints and tips from some of the best Fantasy managers out there.

But it is as much about the people as the game, with stories of glory and despair, mini-league skulduggery and humiliating failure and the strange grip the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in particular has on managers from Australia to Zimbabwe and just about everywhere in between.

There are in-depth interviews with FPL champions and Fantasy-mad Saudi princes, a comprehensive look at the eternal conflict that is stats versus ‘the eye test’ and chapters on the history of the game, the all-conquering beast that is Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and what the future of Fantasy Football might look like.

There’s also a revealing section on our very own Mark Sutherns, detailing the methods behind his successful approach to playing FPL.

Written by a fan for the fans, we think Wasting Your Wildcard will inform and entertain in equal measure, while grappling with the reasons behind why we, as supposedly grown-up men and women, cannot resist playing a game of footballing dress-up.

Order ‘Wasting Your Wildcard’ with Waterstones HERE.

Australian fans can order through Booktopia.

Spurs should sign someone good who can play as a 9 but also on the wings, so they can rotate Kane more

    Ederson, 4.0

    Aguero, Vardy, 4.5

Not sure on the Vardy pick. I don’t see him improving upon what his done, the hope is that he matches it, but I’m guessing he will end the season around 140 points... still respectable for a Leicester striker but firmino for .5 more feels so much better to me

        Thanks for the advice.

If anything I think he scores more. He's going to take most of the burden now Mahrez has left and will have to step up. I'd say most of the time Leicester score he will be involved. A little worried about the first couple of games, due to world cup. Did have firmino but can't see there being much points between them.

    Mahrez or Sane?
Couldnt watch the game last night, currently on Sane but have a feeling man city could revert back to a 352 so not favouring Sane?

Pep could do anything, but won’t change the fact that Sané is an awesomely destructive attacker who can score & Assist vs. Anyone. He’s a good pick, if Pep benches him we’ll just have to take it on the chin

Sane was the first name on my team sheet, without World Cup and factoring in his age and the way he played last season, I can’t not pick him. I did consider fitting in Mahrez though aswell as sane but sane wins it for me

Either for the first few gameweeks, so I'd say Mahrez and save 0.5. Pep has brought him in for a lot of money so be surprised if he's on the bench more than he is in the starting lineup

Nice. Back to the question at hand, it would be interesting to see stats for their starts when both were available. I think it could surprise a few folks, could be wrong of course but I think Moreno started a good chunk of games when they were both available

Moreno started the season as first choice and Robertson just had the odd game then when Moreno got injured Robertson made the spot his own and Moreno hardly got a sniff. Expect more rotation from Klopp in the first half of the season though.

I do think the “hardly got a sniff” period coincided with Moreno being injured though, right? As I say it just would be interesting to see the stats to actually shed some light on it.

It should be borne out in the stats then, hopefully we can dig some up to see. There is an almost overwhelming consensus on here that Robbo is turbo nailed into he LB slot & I just would hate to think we are all sleep walking into a situation where he only plays 20-25 games again!

I wouldn’t worry about the stats. Robbo was new to the team and bedding in at the start of the season. It’s clear from the second half of the season if you watched any Liverpool matches that Robertson is a clear class above Moreno and certainly first choice. He could however, like any other Liverpool player be rotated around Champions League ties as Klopp favours rotation.

Aye, worth remembering that Klopp rotated more than any other manager in the first half of the season.

      2. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 15 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

I was kind of thinking the same, Robbo definitely started more in the 2nd half of the season, but I think from memory that coincided with a Moreno injury, and vice versa in the first half of the season.

I’m just not sure if Klopp sees Robertson as his out & out first choice, a Klopp fullback role is so physically demanding that I think he likes having two or more Fullbacks on each side share minutes when both are fit.

I think Robertson is very much the first choice but Moreno could get the odd game around Champions League games if Liverpool get a tough group. I think I’m going with Van Dijk for that reason.

I’m going BVD as well, Utd a si say it would just be nice to see some spdefinitive data on the left fullback slot when both were available to see if here was a pattern, or if it was injury dictated. I might email Klopp! Lol

Yeah I wonder was that the injury recovery though, it was an ankle ligament that he had trouble with for a long time & Klopp May have been easing him back in. Which would be a factor in favour of Robbo if Moreno does have a chronic injury issue.

If they were both fit it would be interesting to see how many premier league minutes Klopp gives each of them

Yeah, possibly. I think Robertson’s performances were so good though that he was almost undroppable and rotation not so much of an issue for the run in.

Sorry guys, lost on the last page:

So it seems as though I'm tinkering every morning at the moment...

    Have gone from this:

    Foster / Patricio
    Coleman / Azpi / Ward / Shaw / W-B
    Salah / Stephens / Cairney / Martial / Mahrez
    Jimenez / Aguero / Firmino

    to the following:

    Foster / Patricio
    Coleman / Robbo / Mendy / Shaw / W-B
    Salah / Richarlison / Cairney / Mkhi / Mane
    Jimenez / Arnie / Aguero

Does the second option look more balanced? I'm also toying with downgrading Jimenez to free up another million, but I'm interested to see if he will lead the Wolves front line for 5.5...

    Cheers guys

Alot of question marks for me.
Pope is not guaranteed to start with Heaton back, which is a worry as you have a non playing back up. Same with Davies and Alonso. Lose milivojevic, think there is much better options at his price. Your solely relying on penalties. Which was good last year at 4.5 but at 6.5 not a chance. Front line is very poor in my opinion. Think you need at least one of the bigger hitters. And some city attack.

But hey I could be wrong

3 goals in 33 games. I don't think it will be 6.5, but he will play a more prominent role at Fulham than Dortmund, so thats good for us!!

If they price him at 6.5 after 3 goals in the last two years at Dortmund something's gone wrong.

    Ederson, Boruc
Robertson, van Dijk, Baines, Sakho, Ward
    Salah, Silva, Richarlison, Kenedy, Cairney
    Aguero, Arnie, Zaha

Ederson offers a cheap, nailed on way into the City defence. In a team that is likely to be rotated extensively I like the security of his starts.

Looking through all the premium defenders the two from Liverpool jump out at me as they are nailed on and also carry attacking threat. I have my fingers crossed that Baines is still on penalties and if Everton are as attacking as people expect I can see a few of these being won. They have great opening fixtures so I may get the odd cleansheet as well. Sakho and Ward rotate really well for the first 8 and seem to be the standout options in the £5m price bracket.

Salah is a given. I think Silva will still be a very important player at City and I expect him to start at least 4 out of 5 games. Richarlison is my £6.5 of choice but a good placeholder for Jota or Maddison if they start doing better than him. Kenedy and Cairney make up the numbers but both are more than capable of returns and I will play them against weak opposition.

I’m hoping Aguero plays in the opening two fixtures, after that he will become Auba as I don’t want to keep a player at that price who is not guaranteed to play. Despite the tough fixtures Arnie did really well once moved up front and he seems underpriced. Another player who had a very strong end to the season was Zaha once he was moved up top. With great opening fixtures I’m hoping he can continue where he left off.

I have considered having Pope and Ryan as my keepers instead, the same price as Ederson and Boruc this would free up a City spot in my team but with so few options guaranteed starting every week, and swapping out Aguero for week 3 I’m not sure I need the spot.
I have considered giving my 3rd Liverpool spot to Firmino instead of van Dijk but I actually think they will score quite similarly and the £2.5m difference between Zaha and Firmino went a long way with upgrading my defence.

Any opinions on my team and thought processes?

No one is really secure as City have too many players that would walk into any other team. Silva offers the best points per million spent and started pretty much every game he was around for last season. I know there was a quote saying that his game time would be cut down but that's only because he was so nailed before. Sane, Aguero, Jesus etc don't need quotes made about them having reduced game time because it is a given.

Your logic about Firmino & VVD is surely applicable to Zaha and any premium defender

4-3-3? I like it but personally would prefer Coleman over Baines.

Baines is probably being replaced by Lucas Digne. I'm not sure I would rotate Sakho and Ward as there are better value rotation options, plus Sakho is reasonably injury prone and you don't want to use a transfer on him I imagine.

The midfield isn't my favourite but that's largely down to personal preference.

I'm not sure why people are so eager for Kasper at 5.0 in their teams. Would you have wanted Lloris or Courtois last year for 5.0, considering Pope and Fabianski significantly outscored both? And Chelsea are set for fewer clean sheets this year as Sarri is an attacking manager.
