With just over a week to go until the 2018/19 season begins, Watford players aren’t proving to be popular purchases in the Fantasy Premier League community.

The Hornets are one of only two clubs – the other being newly promoted Cardiff City – who don’t have a single player with an FPL ownership of 5% or more.

This isn’t a huge shock, looking at last season’s figures: the Hertfordshire club had the third-worst defensive record in the top flight and only one of their players – central midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure (£6.0m) – scored more than five league goals. Richarlison, meanwhile, departed for Everton last week.

Javi Gracia’s side are third-favourites for relegation with some bookmakers and their form from Gameweek 14 onwards last season – the Hornets won more matches (six) before this point than they did in their remaining 25 games (five) – was that of a team fighting the drop.

Watford’s opening three fixtures this season are enticing, however: home matches against Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace sandwich the Hornets’ trip to Burnley, who could be in UEFA Europa League action either side of that encounter.

Encouraging underlying defensive statistics, the pre-season form of Andre Gray (£6.0m) and a tactical system that encourages their full-backs to attack are worthy of note, too – all of which we will expand on in the article below.

In-depth data on Watford’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

Not keen on Ozil or Mitrovic at their prices, also bench will be way too weak imo. Gotta have at least one player capable of stepping in with some points.

Not sure if Bailey is nailed in the long term which could be an issue with your bench. The end of last season when he was dropped is making me cautious.

Thoughts on going without a Man City attacker to start with? Thinking my team looks stronger without one but just can't quite bring myself to risk going without at least one of Kun, Sane, Mahrez or Dilva to start with.

I'm putting in Sanchez as a placeholder for his first 2 games against Leicester and Brighton. He may be playing up top and I can then move on to KDB or whichever city mid looks most likely to play fairly easily 🙂

Sounds a good strategy to me. Punt on an explosive player then choose your ManC attacker based on who's performing best.

City & Pool assets are a must, you can play around between them throughout the season trying to catch Pep & Klopps rotations but going without is suicide I think.

I'm actually with you. I'm starting with Salah/Mane/Firmino but no City. What I've got are Sanchez and Eriksen as placeholders for KdB and prob Mahrez with the possibility of Firmino to Aguero as my first transfers. GW1 away to Arsenal seems okay to miss out on with city being under-strength whilst the placeholders have easy games.

Does he really though? VvD scored only 3 in 15/16 and 1 in 16/17 for Saints. Could easily see Robertson matching that with a full season overlapping from LB.

    Hi guys.

What's your opinion on best attacking potential 5.0m mids? I am currently on Costa as I think he did a good pre-season and may be awarded some gametime at the beginning. Neves much more defensive in my opinion.

    Cairney? Hughes?

I'm on Neves at the moment as it appears he may be on a lot of set piece duties now Douglas has left the club. Costa a good pick but may be in contention for starts with Jota and Cavalleiro. Cairney is a good option I think and Hughes seems popular but I don't know much about Watford's pre season to pass judgement really.

picking any attackers from newly promoted teams is never a good idea for GW1 imo, there will be stand out players like Gross was last season but let them emerge your literally guesing who it will be and 9/10 of you will be wrong. Just jump on the bandwagon early when they emerge

A rare A/B question from me. Wondering how much people value the 3rd bench spot.

    A) Mitrovic + playing 4.5 midfielder (Chalobah for instance)

    B) 6.5 midfielder (Jota/Maddison/Rich) and non-playing 4.5 striker.

In a similar boat.. just think 6.5 mids have so much more potential than striking counterparts. My option would be to find 0.5 more and get Arnie/Zaha and get a 4.5 playing midfielder on the bench.

Love the setup of five in the midfield but that non-playing striker could easily lead to an early wildcard. Still might well gamble on it...

Thoughts on this defensive rotation for the first 6 GWs?
My other defender is Robertson who will be starting week in, week out for my team.
All players listed should be nailed.

      Pereira, Tomkins, Dunk, Bamba

GW 1: Tomkins vs ful, Dunk vs wat
GW 2: Pereira vs WOL, Bamba vs NEW
GW 3: Pereira vs sou, Bamba vs hud
GW 4: Tomkins vs SOU, Dunk vs FUL
GW 5: Tomkins vs hud, Dunk vs sou
GW 6: Pereira vs HUD, Tomkins vs NEW

It's not Tomkins vs Bamba, it's just the two best games (IMO) of Pereira, Tomkins, Dunk, Bamba each GW

Looks like you've put some thought into it! I've been tempted to try a rotation like this but worried that these defenders will come off my bench with dodgy fixtures anyway :/

Bamba likelier to get BP than Peltier (who was also rotated at times last season)
Tomkins likelier to score than AWB, and a more assured starter

RMT please guys, I have taken all the comments and other teams on here into careful consideration when choosing my team:
            Fabianksi
            Cedric - Tomkins - Bertrand
            Mili - Mkhi - Richarlison - Jota - Jorg
            Zaha - Arnie

Note that I have gone for triple Palace, double Saints at the back, plenty of West Ham and some new players I know absolutely nothing about and some im convinced wont start but apparently they will.

            Thanks in advance

Cheers I like Pedro but he isn't nailed on unfortunately... Really happy with two Pool attackers with their fixtures. They are more nailed than the City boys so Aguero will have to do.

Back 4 the same, think Zaha is a little unsettled, not really for me..

              Overall a solid squad

I'm not crazy about him tbh, but a safe pick to start with considering his great fixtures and 32% ownership

              Double Everton not great
Bailly too much of a head ache
Coleman > Burnley then Kola week 3
              Doherty > 4
              Bailly > Alonso or Azpi

Yeah, same as Arnautovic but don’t want both, but maybe worth a try, 42m will not be benched unless totally useless..
