With just over a week to go until the 2018/19 season begins, Watford players aren’t proving to be popular purchases in the Fantasy Premier League community.

The Hornets are one of only two clubs – the other being newly promoted Cardiff City – who don’t have a single player with an FPL ownership of 5% or more.

This isn’t a huge shock, looking at last season’s figures: the Hertfordshire club had the third-worst defensive record in the top flight and only one of their players – central midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure (£6.0m) – scored more than five league goals. Richarlison, meanwhile, departed for Everton last week.

Javi Gracia’s side are third-favourites for relegation with some bookmakers and their form from Gameweek 14 onwards last season – the Hornets won more matches (six) before this point than they did in their remaining 25 games (five) – was that of a team fighting the drop.

Watford’s opening three fixtures this season are enticing, however: home matches against Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace sandwich the Hornets’ trip to Burnley, who could be in UEFA Europa League action either side of that encounter.

Encouraging underlying defensive statistics, the pre-season form of Andre Gray (£6.0m) and a tactical system that encourages their full-backs to attack are worthy of note, too – all of which we will expand on in the article below.

In-depth data on Watford’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

Been sort of settled on this team structure for a while...

    Ederson, 4.0
Robertson, Bailly, Cedric & Diop (these 2 rotate nicely), Wan Bissaka,
    Salah, Sane, , Mkhi, Jota/Richarlison/Pedro, 4.5
    Aguero, Firmino, Sorloth

Feel it gives the flexibility of going 442 or 343, depending which of a defender or Sorloth has a favourable fixture.
Firmino could easily be Laca, Aguero could be Auba...
There's a few decisions to be made but I feel I'm getting closer.

    What do you guys think?

    1. Brosstan
      • 11 Years

You really have a lot of rotation risks in your team considering your poor bench. Sane, Mkhi, Aguero, Bailly, (Pedro). Possibly Firmino gw 1 too. I think theres just too much risk there. Good team if they all play though obviously.

Consider Mkhi -> Ramsey and Sane to Eriksen or something? Maybe go Ederson to a cheaper keeper to free up some funds.

    Ederson
    Robertson - Azpi - PVA - Cedric
    Salah - Mane - Sane - Richarlison
    Lacca - Zaha/Arnie

Bench: Stekelenburg - Quaner - Stephens

    Thoughts about this?
Or should I change Cedric, Mane, Lacca to Davies, Pedro, Aguero???

    Please look into this

      Looks good to me.

DDG might not be worth 6 but rest team does look alright, a downgrade to 5.5 GK would allow you to get playing 4.5 bench def. Keep an eye on Chelsea to confirm Azpi is likely to start.

      A decent 3-4-3 with Salah.

Good luck getting a consensus on the best 5.5 defender.

Cedric and Daniels might get you some stick. Think Tomkins is the popular 4.5m defender here.

One of the best I've seen.
Looking at it for long term for the season, it looks very strong, other than I think Pedro and your defence (minus Robbo) will be changed around in time, everyone else could stick for the season

        • 8 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

Thanks! Yep, agreed on Pedro. Will see how he does on Sunday but happy to have him for first few GWs if he carries on pre season form. Long term plan if he and DSilva aren't nailed is change to KdB and Cairney maybe

I can see what you and Monsieur are saying. I've always been one to build a squad though with only one fodder. Would rather have two decent subs than one every week for any unforeseen issues or multiple hard fixtures. On the flip side, there can be selection headaches so weeks, but I prefer to have that luxury

        1. Robbie Slater
          • 8 Years
          7 years, 4 months ago

Also, as said above, this team is for first few GWs to keep options as open as possible when no one is certain of lineups. Once KdB is fully back, he will most likely come in, probably with Pedro being downgraded to Cairney, who will most likely spend most weeks on the bench

I’d say Salah fairly easily. I dont think it’ll happen personally, but Alexis Sanchez or Hazard could challenge him if they got their shooting boots on, as they both have that OOP midfielder advantage that can generate an extra 40-50 points over a striker from 1 point extra per goal and 1 point extra per CS.

If Sterling or Sané were nailed for City in the same way as those others they would be knocking on the door of 260-280 as well I’d say

That's what I thought at first, then realised just how essential he is. You can find a way of fitting him in. Lots of good cheap forwards and mids. Think Arnie, Zaha, Mkhi/Ramsey, Dilva, Cairney, Hughes

No, Zaha and Wood have good fixtures... and presumably you're only 2 transfers away from getting a premium forward by downgrading a midfielder. As long as the rest of your team is solid as hell then you could be all good man.

Mentioned on a previous post, but was looking through the last few seasons stats for highest points scorers in FPL and the points per million value in midfielders far outweighs that of strikers, so if you’ve settled on that frontline because your midfield is packed, it may not be a bad idea....

I’ve just not been brave enough to do it myself yet!

You could argue that with Arnie and Zaha he's sneaked in 2 extra premium midfielders!

Absolutely! I fully expect both of them to score slightly lower this year, but even so, the freedom not having strikers over 7-8m is incredible.

Personally I think they will score slightly higher as thay played much of last season as winger especially Zaha.

But they’ll be missing out on those extra points that come from goals/clean sheets as midfielders - so that would be 19 points less for Zaha and 18 points less for Arnie... not massive amounts, but it’s a few goals/assists more to make up the difference.

Very good point. This could be crucial. Could make all the difference. My logic was this Azpi scoring 19.02 points per minute played and Arnaut scoring 16.03. So I choose Arnie. Hope he scores enough to reclaim those stats or better them. Azpi of course will play more minutes so it's all in contention. Hope Arnaut will become a top striker this season scoring 15 goals. time will tell. but you point's are though for reflection.

Thanks, My plan is to have Salah, Haz Pog, and Ramsey in midfield. I've deliberated a lot on this and calculated points per minute to assess my options. What is your current team, so I can help you evaluate it.

          Currently on this:

          Patricio / Foster
          Robertson / Coleman / Shaw / Ward / WB
          Salah / Mkhi / Mahrez / Richarlison / Cairney
          Aguero / Arnie / Zaha

I’m keeping a close eye on Luiz for Chelsea, if there’s a chance he could start then I’d look to bring him in, and I’d also be interested in Maguire should a move to United happen... Aside from that I’m fairly happy with the balance of the team, but no doubt I’ll be tinkering right up to the deadline.

Good team. Coleman could be bettered with bailly.
Mkhi is good, but Ramsey is better, regarding points per min.
All else very good, but Patricio and Wolves are unproven but good at the same time in the championship so could be a bargain, who know's.
I love your front line and this team is Very well balanced. Good luck lad.

Cheers chap. I think the points you’ve made are all valid, Patricio rotates fairly well with Foster so hopefully I can make the right decision each week. And Coleman could well swap out for someone like Bailly, I’m just interested to see how Silva gets Everton playing.

Well I live 40miles from Coleman and the same county so I like him a lot, pity he isn't in one of the top 6 clubs. But I was burnt by him last season so I am skeptical. Baillys points per minute is good as United keep clean sheets when he plays. Your goal keeper option could be good but I never trust myself to select the best keeper so Elderson or pool keeeper is better for me. Good luck

Might make me rethink my goalkeeper. I’ve been on Ederson since day 1 but that extra million could come in handy and it’s rare you get a 4.5 starting keeper with such quality ahead of him (the whole team not just these potential signings)
