West Ham United’s line-up for their trip to Anfield in Gameweek 1 will have a very different look to the side that sleepwalked to a 13th-place finish in 2017/18.

Summer signings Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m), Issa Diop (£4.5m), Fabian Balbuena (£4.5m), Ryan Fredericks (£5.0m), Jack Wilshere (£5.0m), Andriy Yarmolenko (£7.0m) and Felipe Anderson (£7.0m) all have realistic chances of starting against Liverpool a week on Sunday, while new manager Manuel Pellegrini has ditched the three-man backline favoured by predecessor David Moyes in favour of an attacking 4-3-3.

West Ham were a team of contradictions last season; no side conceded more league goals than the Hammers, but only the clubs finishing in the top seven kept more clean sheets.

Similarly, while their total of 48 goals scored was the eighth-best in the division, their underlying attacking statistics were mostly unremarkable – more of which we will discuss later in this article.

A grim-looking opening run of fixtures in which the Hammers play five of the “big six” in the first nine Gameweeks will likely deter too much Fantasy investment in Pellegrini’s side, but in Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m) the east London club have a player bang in form and in high demand among Fantasy Premier League managers.

In-depth data on West Ham’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the feature below.

Well I had a really annoying season last year.
Nearly every decision I made in a 50/50 choice was the wrong one.
As long as I don't have a season like that again I will be happy.

So I think I will have a less annoying season... an ok one.

Must admit I can’t put to much thought into my team

That’s why I’m just gonna pick a 4 week fixture team, then wildcard . Hopefully I will get it to ok start and then be more into it

I never really liked picking a gw1 team or a wildcards far to much to consider
I like it when team is settled and can plot a transfer or 2 over the next few weeks

    Hey guys!

I'm feeling so out of touch.

Probably because last season I was deliberately casual as I had little time to give the game the attention it deserves. I was moving house. And parenting a toddler. I also took on and completed a challenge to watch 365 films that I hadn't seen before in the year 2017...

I tried to play some World Cup related games but pretty much failed to cash in on the unforeseen successes and failures of the tournament.

And since then I've ignored football and become obsessed with a new project; researching my family tree.

So... what's your one piece of essential advice for the imminent 2018/19 season that will bring a jaded and time-poor journeyman up to speed?

Yeah but unfortunately most won't read and reply to them because they think it's too long. I'm not good enough ranking wise to give decent advice but :

An attacker on form can score against any opposition so don't buy players just on oppostion if their form is poor.

Get the dominant attacker on a team even it's a poor team. Mahrez was gold last season but not so good this season as most of that Man City side have attacking strengths plus he might not be nailed on.

Pick known quantities. I wouldn't be punting on players from the promoted teams if you've not seen them play, or players who've moved and you don't know their new role. Pick people who, when they do well, you'll be able to own your success.

It's a long season, get the joy in first, once you have that you'll pay enough attention to do well.

      Hit auto-complete and pray.

      More seriously pick one from;

      - Load up on Liverpool attacking options
      - Try to second guess Pep as to the best City attacking pick
      - 4.5m defenders looks quite lovely
      - as do 6.5m midfielders
      - Watch out for world cup fatigue/rests
      - Bin all Bournemouth defenders
      - Hit auto-complete and pray

      Good fixtures
      Watford for the first three

      Good fixtures for ages everton

Good fixtures after gw 3 arsenal

Good fixtures but they are southampton and mark hughes with no decent striker

Good fixtures burnley but they decided to play extra time v aberdeen - europa league etc.

Wolves potential dark horses big spenders have a chance to see them gel after a few games gameweeks.

Spurs potential world cup hangover and missing half a team.

Man United Jose whining and says he has no players

Chelsea could be a few bargains but you could be Sarri if you pick the wrong one so wait a few weeks

After that it is just the well known fellas from man city aguero etc who did not play much world cup v the rest of the squad.

Failing all that just copy Jonty's team.

Not much between them. Pickford should get better than Courtois in a year or two. But Silva should leave Everton if they sell Pickford.

Mane vs Firmino. Mane seemingly on pens, gets extra pts for clean sheets & goals, more match-fit so will be sharper & probably play more mins at the beginning of the season. How come a lot of people are going Firmino?

If you could pick Mane & a 6.5 fwd or Firmino & a 6.5 mid, which would you pick? Who would your 6.5 player be?

    1. Dillonb93
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 4 months ago

I think firmino is ahead of Mané on penalties
I have firmino but still tempted to change to mane
6.5million mid for me is Maddison

Firmino based on last season and how his curve looks upward. Mane has more ability but can be inconsistent.

    4. Woy of the Wovers
      • 15 Years
      7 years, 4 months ago

I'd play safe with Firmino and have Richarlison for the mid. Not the most clear cut choice but there's likely more value in a 6.5m mid than in a 6.5m forward.

Depends on the rest of your defence. If he's an imperative starter probably Sakho, prefer Ward over Everton defenders too.

          Otherwise, downgrade to a 4.5m.

Ward I’m thinking of, but Europa league scares me

I’ve got Pickford in goal, I think Everton’s fixtures are so good, double defence could work

Is it just me, or is the standard of 5.0 and below defenders this year not as good as previous years? Think it could be because of the teams that went down last year. Stoke WBA and Swansea usually offered some decent options, but not seeing as many this year

Yep, some of the 4.5's look just as good. Sakho is fine but Tomkins/pva/awb are the buys. Pereira could be interesting, supposed to be a quality RB at lei so one to watch.

It always feels like this before the season starts. Those gems will emerge - the mid-table team whose new manager instils some defensive rigour, the unfancied left back who scores in both the first two gameweeks, the new centre back who cements a starting position and ends up playing every minute of the season. They're all there, you just have to back them blind...

He scored very well last season with limited service, we’ve actually signed ‘proper’ wingers in this window so service shouldn’t be an issue whatsoever. Fixtures are tough but new manager, new players, West Ham are an unknown this year & I think teams will struggle to work us out. Time will tell though, it could all go terrible!

Already have Kun Mendy and Ederson so MC covered. Sánchez swaps easily to Hazard/KdB etc once players return, so I’m really looking at first 2-3 weeks. Also have Pedro subject to CS, and can’t see any clear preferences between 6.5s generally. Other options for 17m if not these?

Okay...I think I have won it!!!....Rip it to pieces....

    Ederson - Speroni
    Coleman - DLuiz - Cedric - Boly - WB
    Salah - Sane - Richarlison - Neves - Stephens
    Kun - Firmino - Arnie

0.5 ITB for Sane to KDB if required.

Change speroni for a 4m keeper with low ownership. If people start shipping him out with his high ownership his value will drop into the 3m range which is bad tricks for your team value.

      None of them imo.

Goalkeepers are weak and rotating them just doesn’t work, just get a premium keeper who will be nailed every week and a 4m shitter with low ownership for the bench.

Your midfields are terrible. Most points game from midfield last year and you’ve cheaped out.

      I’d start again lol

Gone for 2 extremely expensive midfielders at the cost of having the other 3 midfielders as all borderline bench fodder.
I’d much rather have 5 good players than 2 amazing and 3 substandard in my opinion.

More points would definitely come from five 7-8m players
