Best West Ham players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

West Ham United’s line-up for their trip to Anfield in Gameweek 1 will have a very different look to the side that sleepwalked to a 13th-place finish in 2017/18.

Summer signings Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m), Issa Diop (£4.5m), Fabian Balbuena (£4.5m), Ryan Fredericks (£5.0m), Jack Wilshere (£5.0m), Andriy Yarmolenko (£7.0m) and Felipe Anderson (£7.0m) all have realistic chances of starting against Liverpool a week on Sunday, while new manager Manuel Pellegrini has ditched the three-man backline favoured by predecessor David Moyes in favour of an attacking 4-3-3.

West Ham were a team of contradictions last season; no side conceded more league goals than the Hammers, but only the clubs finishing in the top seven kept more clean sheets.

Similarly, while their total of 48 goals scored was the eighth-best in the division, their underlying attacking statistics were mostly unremarkable – more of which we will discuss later in this article.

A grim-looking opening run of fixtures in which the Hammers play five of the “big six” in the first nine Gameweeks will likely deter too much Fantasy investment in Pellegrini’s side, but in Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m) the east London club have a player bang in form and in high demand among Fantasy Premier League managers.

In-depth data on West Ham’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the feature below.

Little help here appreciated, guess its to do with team structure really-

    Ederson/ Boric
    Robertson/ Jagileka/ Wan-B/ Cedric/ ????
    Sane/ Richarlason/ Salah/ Neves/ Westwood
    Aguero/Auba/?????

    A. 4.5 def and Austin and 0.5 left
B up to 6.5 def and Kamara

(Sane to Mane if not playing, Westwood can be any 4.5 mid)

    Thanks for any thoughts

Yeah, I've kind of talked myself into Jota although he's obviously a huge unknown. In that price range I'm pretty interested in Ramsey/Mkhitaryan, but the first two fixtures are a good enough excuse to wait and see how Arsenal line up.

It's an auto pick team for a casual.

Cedric Daniels TAA might not even play.

Sané might not be fit, Sanchez plays in a Man U team under Mourinho.
Willian has an awful FPL history.

Your only good defender is TAA, and he’s not even nailed for the first few weeks.

Willian might be on his way out of Chelsea, and he’s not a great pick right now. I’d much rather Pedro atm, and that’s saying something.

Sane... pep isn’t happy with his fitness.

Bailly is a risk, Keita unproven in prem and unlikely to shine. Mahrez high chance of bench. MK is hardly golden. Your bench is shocking and could have be lucky to get you 2 points a week. Shambles

Take the feedback with a pinch of salt. Everyone thinks their team is the best until week 1 hits and you're like... oh damn.
      Constructive feedback is better.
Your bench is stronger than most. Maybe shave 1 mil off Tarky and 0.5 off Tomkins and re-invest in the players who are most unsure to start.

    Ok lads here it is.

Gone for an interesting tactic(if you can call it that) this year by trying to stick with a core of 'guaranteed heavy hitters' for a large majority of the season(Blanks/DGWs/ACL tears pending) and using transfers on the 'value' options on a more week-by-week basis.

(Of course this could all fall apart very quickly)

    Ryan, Button.
[Bailly, Alexander-Arnold], Kabasele, Wan Bissaka, Peltier.
    [Salah], Mahrez, Richarlison, Schürrle, Chalobah.
    [Kane, Agüero], Wilson.

So the 'bankers' are Utd def, Liv def(two of the best 'value' defences in the league IF my two options start a majority of games) and Salah, Kun & Kane, who I think will be the three top scorers at the end of the season with 25+ goals each. I am also a massive fan of Ryan between the sticks as Brighton profile like Burnley in terms of playing style and we all know what that means for save points and clean sheets.

This still leaves me with one heavy hitter in attack and enough for some good value picks. I kind of like it but would love some feedback on my approach.

Putting aside the fact neither Bailly nor TAA could possibly be described as 'guaranteed heavy hitters', all you've done is ruin your team to fit Harry Kane in

        • 12 Years
        6 years, 1 month ago

Bailly & TAA are both ~30-start players in two of the best defences in the League as it stands. They are not 'guarenteed' but they sure as hell represent value.

And Kane has a lot of disrespect around here, another 30 goals golden boots season incoming.

        1. +
          • 9 Years
          6 years, 1 month ago

Bailly has never played a 30 game season in his life, and there's extremely little to suggest that's going to change any time soon. TAA just turned 19 - he will be rotated.

Kane scored 30 goals last year and still wasn't a great pick for most of the season. He'll have to do a lot more than that to provide value at 12.5 in a year when Salah takes up 13.0 of your budget

          1. Parm
            • 12 Years
            6 years, 1 month ago

Bailly has had a lot of injuries preventing him from consistent starts but the current situation as United's senior(and best) centre-back has him as a 30 game starter this season. Same with Trent. These are facts.

Kane was a prime captaincy option last season, scored 2 goals or more in 9 games. Salah did it in 6, Aguero in 4. Facts again.

He's been United's best centre-back since the moment he arrived, it's irrelevant; Mourinho doesn't rate him. It's not impossible that both he and TAA get lots of game time this season, the point is that they aren't 'guaranteed heavy hitters'.

Re Kane: that... is the point. His value lies in being your captain. But you won't be captaining him most weeks, because you have Salah. Owning three players valued 11.0+ will probably not prove good value

                6 years, 1 month ago

But right now, Bailly/TAA are the starters at their current clubs?

So now you are admitting that Kane is actually a good pick? Take value out of the equation here, you can make that up elsewhere and that's my entire point, you get these 30 goal a season guys and you stick with em'. Spend most of your transfers(you waste going from heavy hitter to heavy hitter) moving around your Mitrovic's and your Arnautovic's and you have your 'value' back.

You: Spend 8 transfers on moving around Aubameyang, Lukaku, Kane & Aguero = 240 points.

Me: Sit on Kane all season = 220 points.

Also You: Spend about 8 transfers on moving your third striker around a bit = 100 points.

This is just an example but you are completely missing my point of Kane not being the 'value' but a key linchpin in this whole strategy. Kane is the most consistent player in the game and vital to my strategy.

Where did you get those numbers from?

Do you seriously believe keeping Kane all season at 12.5m for 220 points is value? Did you do that last season? This isn't FPL Draft. In FPL Draft, he would be the first name on my team.

Difference is Salah got a lot more points for his goals as he is a midfielder... Kane got less points for more effort lol.

Kane consistently let people down last year as a captaincy pick... and he himself admits that he is terrible at scoring goals at the start of the season

Salah also got more assists so there is that too.

Kane letting people down is a physiological block that every manager has and it's a really stupid way to think but we do it.

List of those 2 goal games: eve, hud, whu, LIV, STO, bur, SOU, EVE, LEI.

He is your captain/vice in all of those bar the Liverpool game maybe. Rough/smooth. If you hit on 1/2 of those you're in the £££.

It's an irrelevant fact. It's not the number of goals in a game that matters, but the amount of points in a game. Double digit hauls.

Salah gets double digit hauls through goals and assists. Kane gets them through goals only and got an abysmal 2 assists last season. Salah was consistent and fixture proof, Kane wasn't and was the biggest captaincy troll of the season, blanking against rubbish sides. 12.5m for 217 points is the most absurd pricing I've seen.

I dig it. I'm a little skeptical that TAA will win the spot outright from Clyne, but I guess we'll see. I do think Kane is being undervalued, although I understand the worries a lot of people have about having him from the start. But he's not that far away from a 280+ point season with a little luck.

Interesting approach but I think you will need to pick 2 from Salah, Kane and Aguero, otherwise you look locked into an inflexible structure with few alternatives at a number of price points (Shurrle, Wilson, most of your defence)

Reading the discussion in this thread, and get the strategy - well articulated.

I really don't get it when people use the value argument as a weapon without considering the use of FTs to increase position value vs individual player value.

That said, I've tried this strategy in the past and failed miserably to stick to it (my fault).

The way you feel about Kane and Salah - I felt about Hazard 2 seasons ago and then Mourinho happened, Aguero last season and then Jesus happened, Sanchez and then Arsenal happened, and so on.

Would love to see someone give it a proper shot. All the best.

Slow and steady approach but there will be days when City score a hatful therefore I want to leave 2 attacking spots open. But will monitor how much rotation there is. KDB will be in team once I know he is starting will not risk before then.

      I am going 3 big mids . Salah KDB and a 9.5
Usually Eriksen but can be Mane or Mahrez /Sane too depending on fixtures.

Also there are quite a few players who might haul and not not here (Kane/ Lamela/ Gray(Lei)/ Gray(Wat)/ Townsend/ Fraser/ Defoe...) - but we go with the most likely to do well.
On the other hand I really think Defoe will do well in GW1, and I think he starts ahead of Wilson.

Not personally, but I think he's better choice for 4th mid than someone like Cairney

Nope. Inconsistent player in an inconsistent team.

7/10 - How certain is Shaw to start for MU? I've gone with Bailly as should be a regular.

I think Shaw will start the first two games before Moaninho bullies him.

In terms of total points scored at end of season how do we see Pool defenders stacking up?

I see it as VVD, Robbo, TAA, Lovren in that order. If there’s not much between Robbo and TAA that will be a crucial decision.

If Robbo is nailed he'll do VVD.

But he isn't, so you're probably right.

Anyone staying away from Burnley assets since they have 2 qualifying games before and after GW1? Bodies stacking up pretty quickly now.

I like it if I'm honestt, they've got a bit of form and we can see who's fit and ready to start the season well.

Yes the defence loses appeal if both the keepers are out for sometime.

If Heaton is fit to start GW1 I think he'll be my set and forget keeper.

Last minute transfers before the deadline to cause massive chaos hours before we are required to finalize our teams, especially those who live on the other side of the UK.

Deadline closes on 9 August there’s enough time.

Yes but still unknown entities could scupper ur well laid plans, especially when the game starts on a working day, and u r having a nice sleep at the time the transfer window closes.

There’s only enough time if FPL upload all new incoming player changes in time.
