Chelsea and Manchester City meet in the FA Community Shield today and there is plenty for Fantasy Premier League managers to be keeping their eye on.

In fact, Fantasy enthusiasts couldn’t have hand-picked two better teams to look at in a competitive setting before the Gameweek 1 deadline.

With plenty still up in the air for both clubs, this is a perfect opportunity for some Fantasy research ahead of the 2018/19 season.

WINGING IT

There will be a lot of interest in midfielders Pedro (£6.5m) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (£4.5m) today, as managers await a potentially cost-saving route into the Chelsea attack.

The pair have started all of Chelsea’s pre-season matches so far on the flanks of the front three, either side of Alvaro Morata (£9.0m) and, by all accounts, have impressed hugely.

Pedro has two goals to his name in three matches while Hudson-Odoi (one assist) has been deemed the best performer of Chelsea’s pre-season so far.

The absences of Eden Hazard (£10.5m) and Willian (£7.5m), and their potential departures before the transfer window closes, leaves a huge opportunity in this area of the team for Pedro and Hudson-Odoi. If they can take it, then Fantasy managers will be very pleased with the money they could save on these two exciting options.

But there is even more to pay attention to in the wide areas for today’s match. FPL defender Victor Moses (£6.0m) has now been used as a second-half substitute on the right of the forward line twice in pre-season, creating serious potential for him to be a powerful out-of-position option.

The only reason he has not started a match yet is because of his extended World Cup leave, so it is entirely possible that he could feature from the beginning in an attacking position at Wembley today. If that happens, he could quickly become the most popular Chelsea defender in FPL…

GOALONSO?

…But the most fashionable Chelsea stoppers right now are Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.5m). Over 16 percent of managers have backed one of these as they prepare to line-up as the full-backs at Stamford Bridge this season.

The scrapping of the 3-4-3 wing-back system by new manager Maurizio Sarri has the potential to change the output of both of these premium players which is why it will be good to see them in action as more traditional full-backs in a 4-3-3.

Crucially, we need to see whether or not either of them have as much license to get forward, as they have done in previous seasons.

If the pair are afforded that against Man City today then we know that £6.5m is a price worth paying; if not, then it might make sense to look elsewhere.

The cheaper David Luiz (£5.5m) looks like he’ll be a regular at centre-back at the beginning of the season and, as we’ve already alluded to, Moses could even offer more advanced positions than Alonso and Azpilicueta for £0.5m less.

THE MAHREZ SHOW

Pep Guardiola revealed in his pre-match press conference on Friday that Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) would be fit to compete in the Community Shield.

This is a big boost for Fantasy managers who were hoping to tap into his apparent monopoly on a starting place in the early part of the season. As one of a few first-team players at Man City who did not take part in this summer’s World Cup, the Algerian may well get several weeks without rotation from Guardiola, which will be important given the fixtures on offer. The only ones not back in training yet are Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) and Kevin de Bruyne (£10.0m), leaving the door open for Mahrez to play.

We think he’ll probably play in the midfield but it is even a possibility that he could play in a forward’s role within a 3-5-2 system. Either way, we should pay close attention to Mahrez today and see where he might slot into City’s system.

Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is the more likely of City’s natural centre-forwards to start as he played fewer minutes with Argentina than Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) did with Brazil in Russia.

It’s also worth monitoring Leroy Sané’s (£9.5m) involvement today. It was believed he would be an important asset to own for Gameweek 1 having missed out on a place in Germany’s World Cup squad, but he is still yet to make a start for City this summer and Guardiola recently revealed he had a lot of work to do to get fit for the new season.

ON THE MENDY

Right now the defensive picture at Man City looks very unclear, and the Community Shield will be an important indicator of who will line-up at Arsenal in Gameweek 1.

At this current point in time perhaps the only player at this end of the pitch we can be confident will get game-time is goalkeeper Ederson (£5.5m), simply because he did not feature in Brazil’s World Cup campaign.

Outside of that, it becomes pure conjecture to try and piece together a predicted starting line-up, as only Guardiola knows what state his defensive assets are in.

The fact that Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) was in the training squad for the pre-season tour has proved not quite as encouraging as first thought, because the Frenchman was not involved in any matches in the USA. In terms of competition, England man Kyle Walker (£6.5m) left Russia with an injury and Danilo (£5.5m) is still carrying the knock he picked up with Brazil. Fabian Delph (£5.5m) was another training late-comer. Perhaps Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m) could feature on one flank but Mendy may still have to play on the other.

As for centre-backs, Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) picked up an injury on tour, while John Stones (£5.5m), Nicolas Otamendi (£6.5m) and Vincent Kompany (£5.5m) have only recently returned to training.

TOO SOON?

Given the special circumstances of this Community Shield match, it is entirely possible that it counts for less than it normally would when predicting Gameweek 1 line-ups.

Ultaimtely, neither one of Guardiola or Sarri wants to be preparing a full first-team for this fixture, with so many important figures affected by the World Cup.

In fact, the City manager said on Friday: “We would prefer to be in another situation but I think Maurizio Sarri is the same. It is what it is, we will adapt and play with guys in better condition. I think we have six substitutes too so everybody will be involved but maybe 90 minutes will not be possible.”

That could indicate that there may well be players who aren’t considered ready for the Community Shield but may become available for the trip to Arsenal in the next week. Accordingly, just because a player is given preference in a position this weekend, does not mean he will hold onto his starting berth the following week.

That’s why Guardiola and Sarri’s press conferences next week could be even more important than this first match of the 2018/19 English season – although it will still be good to witness the return of competitive action for two top-flight teams.

Suppose Crystal Palace keep 9-10 clean sheets this season.

That'd give Wan-Bissaka a return roughly once every 4 games.

Surely that's better than any 4.5 mid, and hence Wan-Bissaka is worthy of the first spot on our bench?

Suppose palace keep 32 clean sheets this season.

That'd give Wan Bissaka a return roughly every game.

Surely that makes him a starter!

I think you need to clarify that assumption at the start...

    Wolves fan here.

So many people overlooking Costa, and picking Jota.

As Wolves fans, we all know how good he was in the 16/17 season. Last season he didn't perform well due to not having a preseason and being injured.

I reckon this season he will be quality. He had a strong finish to the end of last season when he recovered fitness and is having a good pre season.

    1. DeathoftheParty

        Nah we play a 3-43.

Jota on the left and Costa on the right.

Costa seems to have nailed down that spot on the right, with Cavaleiro being an impact sub this season.

        1. ALoadOfBull

For only 5m as well... bargain.

With Douglas leaving, Costa seems to now be on corners.

If only Douglas was not sold, would have been fantasy gold this season

Not necessarily. Jota can switch to the number 9 position in replace of Jiminez/Bonatini. Cav can then come on and take up that position on the left, leaving Costa to play the rest of the game.

If Adama Traore signs he'd likely take Costa's spot, though? I do remember seeing Costa during the FA Cup run in 16/17, and he was very impressive.

Definitely being slept on if you don't add another winger.

Fair point, but Costa has been one of our best players in preseason, can't see him losing his spot. The Traore deal is also up in the air at the moment, with him being injured for 4-6 weeks wolves may be looking elsewhere.

              Ah, that's interesting.

Definitely worth flagging up Costa, certainly not being mentioned enough amongst the Jota chatter.

We played Saiss in defence yesterday, who played the whole of the last season in CM - Saiss had a poor game. Coady seems more confident with Bennet by his side. We are also looking for another CB.

Neves plays CM, not much of an attacking threat, but does score some long rangers from time to time. He's on free kicks, and by the looks of it also penalties, so could be a decent pick, think I'm going costa over him though!

Probably needs to be going at about 7 ppg, he should get 10 appearance points and maybe 3 clean she points so probably three goals, one assist plus a few bonus. Doesn’t sound that much really

For me the difference is Salah & Zaha or Sane & Auba.

Like both options but in a long run I don't think Salah is worth having

            1. AndyCook
                7 years, 5 months ago

I guess it depends how you look at it, if Salah gets 230 points and Zaha gets maybe 140, I would have Sane as probaly 180 and Auba as 200 so I see where you are coming from provided you can pick a good captained each week. Salah in isolation seems worth it but if there are other players more heavily underpriced it seems plausible that he may be far enough down the list of players representing the best value that you’d still choose to omit him.

                  BUT.....Captain

You have to consider Salah x 2 + other versus others
                  Your example above gives 230 x2 + 140 = 600 versus 200x2 +180 = 580 Salah wins
Not so plausible then, especially as you'd probably start switching (C) if you don't have him and that means its a lucky dip if you get the big scores or not.

                  1. AndyCook
                      7 years, 5 months ago

Right now everyone thinks they will captain Salah every game but when we have a big striker against the bottom placed side whilst Salah plays United or something this won’t actually be the case. You don’t have to have 200x2, in theory you should be able to get the best of each to a certain extent by cherry picking fixtures of your other players

8 PPG is a successsful captaincy imo (if you got that for all 38 weeks you would have over 600 captain points.)

                8*5 games = 40 points
                -10 appearance points = 30 points
                - 2 CS points = 28 points target

                3 goals = 15 points
                2 assists = 6 points
                5 baps = 5 points

So 3 goals & 2 assists should just about get him there

West Ham home & Brighton home should hopefully get him most of the way there. Then he has Palace away Leicester away to get a goal or assist or two. Then spurs away where it might be slim pickings.

I had 7 ppg game down which would take you to 266 for the season - but either way this doesn’t sound all that much in returns!

7 PPG would probably be fairer alright, but even at 8 PPG it looks very tasty.

I predict what he COULD actually get without too much luck:

                      GW1 goal, assist, 2 baps, CS (13)
                      GW2 Assist (5)
                      GW3 goal assist, 2 baps, CS (13)
                      GW4 Assist (5)
                      GW5 Goal (7)

                      That’s 43 points, or 8.6 PPG

With a bit of luck you could easily add another 10 points to that lot!

I agree, and he could do close to that all season. There is no evidence to suggest he will slow up significantly and at even 25 goals I’ll want him

Best mid range midfielder? Up to 8m?

I want Mkhi to work out, but got a feeling he isn’t nailed.

                    It's so annoying.

Mkhi and Ramsey - both of them look so good value, but Mkhi isn't nailed and Ramsey has a yellow flag.

There isn't anyone else I'm really keen on either

I'm starting to think that Ozil could be the best value. Set pieces and behind potentially three consistent goal scorers.

I always use my WC early in the season, so at the current stage I'm looking 5-6 weeks into the season, though admittedly this is largely because I'm lazy and the season tracker on this website shows the next 6 weeks.

When I come to WC then I feel I have a better idea of how the teams and players are performing, and at that stage I'll be looking up to 10 weeks ahead, though it depends on the individual players and the area of the pitch - ie, I know I don't like using transfers on defenders or keepers, so I'd like to have my defence pretty much sorted indefinitely following my WC.

This season is different. There are 6 big teams and if you look at the ticker for any team it is full of red and green. There aren't many stretches of green. But normally it's about 7 games

I don't want to play FPL this season (and probably the following ones, too). What are my exit options? Deleting the team, giving it to someone else (my history is quite good) - anything else? Can I hibernate a team for several seasons?

Just pick an all England team and let it run the season.

It would spoil the season history though... 🙂

                    A - Auba & Maherz

                    B - Aguero & Mikhi

Tough call, I give the edge to A atm.

A if you have Salah. B if you don't.

                    Question about using the site:

My default setting is to sort by 'rating'. However, there seems to be a massive obstacle to using the comment section in this way.

If you post a comment, it takes you to the most recent page (and re-sorts by date). If you want to refresh a thread (using the permalink button) to check for new replies, it takes you to the page of that thread (and re-sorts by date).

Is there a better way of refreshing the post while maintaining your position in the comment section, or even just a quick way to return to the the first page (for example) with the default sorting active, than clicking on FFS home and then clicking back into the article and scrolling to find where you were before?

It may even be useful to be able to click on the page number of the page you are already on as a means to refreshing the page, but this would also have to restore the default sorting method if it had already switched to 'date'.

All things that are annoying for me too and need to be ironed out.

I've copy and pasted this into the chat I have with tech because it's a nice summary 😀

Since Sort by Rating is something we're trying to push, this will move up the priority list

I agree the whole forum needs a revamp it is very messy.
Personally I don't bother sorting the comments by rating and the like.
I just read the comments and find the real nuggets of info are from diehard supporters of teams.
The people who know the team inside out.
I just ask a question then tick the notify button.
Then I click on the email later on.

                      Keeps it simple.

                    Good article.
Read all the way through it and it tells me after all that

" it is entirely possible that it counts for less than it normally would when predicting Gameweek 1 line-ups"

                    😀

Bets nicely hedged there David you could give the resident policition granville a run for his money!

It was the clickbait title that got me, its ok David, we were going to read the article anyway. "What to look out for in the Community Shield" would have sufficed....

If you sort by rating, the top post is a RMT 😆

Yeah.... thats why I gave up on sort by rating a while ago. It really needs more people to be voting for it to be effective.

                      Winger, operates from left wing.
