Free-flowing Liverpool display bodes well for Newcastle trip

Liverpool 5-3 Chelsea

  • Goals: Naby Keïta (£5.8m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m), Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.4m), Roberto Firmino (£9.3m), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£6.1m) | Olivier Giroud (£6.7m), Tammy Abraham (£7.4m), Christian Pulisic (£7.4m)
  • Assists: Sadio Mané (£12.2m), Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) | Willian (£7.3m), Pulisic, Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.1m)
  • Bonus Points: Alexander-Arnold x3, Firmino x2, Robertson x1

Fantasy Premier League managers were treated to a preview of Gameweek 38+ as the goals flowed in Liverpool’s 5-3 win over Chelsea on Wednesday evening.

It was a night where each side’s defences went on holiday and the floodgates opened up, usually the hallmark of the last day of the season.

On the basis of this performance, there will be plenty of interest in Liverpool attackers as they travel to Newcastle on Sunday, but Fantasy managers may have to ask some important questions as they prepare for the closing weekend of 2019/20.

Firstly, for all the Reds’ free-flowing football, which could punish an injury-stricken Magpies squad, they will be travelling to St. James’ Park in the wake of celebrating lifting the Premier League trophy. The last time they played after a big party they were soundly beaten 4-0 by Manchester City. While Newcastle are unlikely to be as punishing as Pep Guardiola’s men, there are sure to be concerns of a Liverpool performance akin to that defeat on Sunday…

But provided Jurgen Klopp can encourage a stronger focus on the next match than we saw with that heavy Etihad loss, there were a lot of encouraging signs about his attackers against Chelsea.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is sure to go into Gameweek 38+ with a bee under his bonnet after he was unfortunate to miss out on a goal for the third match in a row. The Egyptian was, as ever, the most threatening Liverpool forward in terms of shots produced and chances created for him, while Sadio Mané (£12.2m) did not shoot once.

Despite a heavy involvement in the regular forays into Chelsea’s territory, Salah could muster only an assist for Georginio Wijnaldum’s (£5.4m) first-half goal. And when the premium midfielder was replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£6.1m) in the 79th minute, he was positively thunder-faced.

With just one match left of the season, Salah sits four goals behind Jamie Vardy (£9.7m) in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot. While clinching the award seems unlikely at this point, it will almost certainly be on the Egyptian’s mind on the final weekend of the campaign. If Liverpool can replicate the free-flowing display of Wednesday night, and Salah keeps up his involvement in those attacks, a big haul is hardly off the cards. He may have to work on his finishing in the next few days though, especially after spooning a golden chance wide in the second-half when he was clear through on goal.

After recording just one attacking return between Gameweeks 30+ and 36+, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m) was back to his scintillating best against Chelsea, becoming the first defender of the season to go past the 200-point barrier. Currently sat on 209 for the campaign, he is just five points off breaking the record for most points in a season for a defender, set last year by colleague Andrew Robertson (£7.0m).

Against Chelsea, the right-back struck home a routine direct free-kick in the first half before throwing up a trademark cross in the second, nodded home by Roberto Firmino (£9.3m). Both of those events bode well for a Gameweek 38+ meeting with Newcastle, the Magpies sitting inside the bottom three for headed goal attempts allowed and set-play attempts conceded since the Premier League restart.

Those statistics may also be of a benefit to Robertson who continues to have a hand in Liverpool corners, nearly earning an assist for a Salah goal in the second half against Chelsea, a previous corner also leading to Wijnaldum’s first-half strike. The left-back got the attacking return his crosses deserved in the 84th minute when his ball sailed through the middle of the Chelsea defence to be turned in by Oxlade-Chamberlain. That made for Robertson’s fourth assist of the restart period, double the number recorded by Alexander-Arnold.

Obviously, the Reds were helped by continual issues with Chelsea’s defence. They have now gone an entire Premier League campaign with just one clean sheet on the road and only four sides have conceded more goals from set pieces than Frank Lampard’s men. While they have managed seven clean sheets at home, their susceptibility to corners may convince owners of Willy Boly (£4.9m) or Romain Saïss (£4.8m) to start them for Gameweek 38+. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s general issues with defending, made worse by continued poor performances from Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5.4m), is sure to be enough evidence to hold onto Raúl Jiménez (£8.1m) for one last hurrah.

That said, as much as Chelsea struggled at the back, they offered plenty of attacking threat at Anfield. Liverpool’s defence has not been at its best since the restart, keeping just three of their 15 clean sheets since Gameweek 30+, but owners of Christian Pulisic (£7.4m) should feel particularly encouraged ahead of the final round of fixtures.

Despite only playing 31 minutes, the American managed a goal and assist for a nine-point score. During this time on the pitch, Pulisic looked unplayable, exploiting the space behind Liverpool’s defence to cross for Tammy Abraham (£7.4m) to tap-in and net an excellent swivelled finish of his own. Whether he will get as much of freedom against a compact Wolves side remains to be seen, but the mid-priced midfielder has now delivered attacking returns in all but one match since the Premier League restart, averaging 6.8 points per game during that period.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, van Dijk, Gomez, Alexander-Arnold; Wijnaldum (Milner 66’), Fabinho, Keïta (C Jones 66’); Mané (Origi 87’), Firmino (Minamino 87’), Salah (Oxlade-Chamberlain 79’).

Chelsea XI (3-4-3): Kepa; Rüdiger, Zouma, Azpilicueta; Alonso (Emerson 88’), Kovačić, Jorginho, R James; Mount (Pulisic 58’), Giroud (Abraham 58’), Willian (Hudson-Odoi 58’).

One Saturday I was happy with my 6 attackers from the Manchester clubs. Now not so sure after the performances since then.

    This is where I’m at;

1ft/4.2 itb Under 10k, lots to play for.
    Current Team;
    SuperPope!
    TAA/Doc/Saiss (Kiko/Lascelles)
    KDB/Salah/Bruno/Martial (Dozi)
    Ings/Jimi/Greenwood

    A - Dozi > Silva (Mahrez)
    B - KDB > Sterling
    C - Martial (or Bruno) > Sterling
    D - Salah/Dozi > Silva/Sterling (-4) (bench Greenwood)
    E - Martial/Dozi > Silva/Mahrez (-4)

I feel I need Sterling just to block now but a lot comes down to taking a hit or not?

Thoughts on this FH team? Two 28 and 29 point mini league leads. Kev & Puli I’m blocking. Is that wise with that type of lead? Cheers 🙂

    Martínez
    TAA, Pieters, Branthwaite
    Salah, Sterling, Dilva, Puli, KDB
    Kane, Ings

That looks a solid team regardless of lead. Who are their differentials that can haul big?

Doherty, Bruno, KDB, Puli, Jim, Greenwood, Ings are the players they have that concern me. I could get them all but not sure that is wise especially with one of them having TC chip. What you think MS?

Wouldn't worry too much about Doherty (unlikely to get a CS) and Jimenez (rarely hauls). KDB could score well but will be focused on assists rather than goals. Think you look set and should have this one.

Of course they have their own moves so could drop KDB or Puli anyways so it’s hard to predict. The one with the TC might get Auba in. Should that concern me?

Do any of them have Kane, or likely to get him? If not go Auba instead to mitigate some of the damage if they did.

Neither has Kane. One of them has the funds to upgrade Vardy >> Auba OR Kane. So ideally I’d want both but it’s hard to fit them all in

Think you are well placed and this is strong team- might be tempted with Mahrez over KDB and use funds on Braithwaite to Digne - not done the maths

Would you bench Greenwood or Jimenez?

Greenwood - scored yesterday, only needs half a chance, up against a rookie left-back, Leicester defence very poor recently.

Jimenez - 90 minutes guaranteed, usually on pens, Chelsea just shipped 5, scored there last season

Martial instead of Bruno. Looks good atm. Bruno looked tired and ratty. Could easily have been sent off. For me because he is tired he is getting frustrated. Martial is looking really sharp.

Keep in mind Sterling who is chasing golden boot is coming off 4 double digit returns in last 5 pl starts and faces the worst defence in the league.

It was fantastic. Best gameweek of the season.

Sterling (c), Foden + TAA and Pieters got me to 94 points and shot me from 8th to 1st (temporarily in my ML).

Smooths all around apart from the blanks for Bruno and Rashford although those might be extra smooths really because of EO%.

Tbh at 200k or so you could quite easily halve your rank with a good GW. I've jumped or fallen over 100k in rank loads of times through the season and my scores have consistently been less than ~75 which isn't that difficult in GW38

Rough - Mahrez cameo, Rashford poor, Salah wasteful, Ings pen miss and Martial (c) could have been better.

Smooth - Pieters, Doherty and TAA defence hauling. Dilva no show meant Greenwood points off the bench.

            Mine was a total wipeout.

A case of 'good logic, bad result'.
Triple captain Bruno just as he decided to stop playing and get himself carded, and Willian and Giroud get subbed off under 60 mins!

Now I need a colossol score with my FH in the last game of the season to steal top spot from the office kn*bhead!

            Rough:
            - Bought Kane for his blanks GW 33-35 then sold for his brace of braces GW 36-37.
            - 35 points on my bench before autosubs: McCarthy (7), TAA (13), Pulisic (9), Aurier (6), with Mahrez, Fernandes and Rashford scoring a single point each.
            - Sold Giroud & Greenwood this week (14) for Ings & Wood (11), keeping Rashford. Ings missing his penalty was a big blow.

            Smooth:
            - A rare Saiss no-show brought TAA off the bench!
            - Captained the highest-scoring player in my starting XI, Doherty! (12x2)

Rough - TAA and Greenwood benched. Jesus and Maguire blanks. Antonio and Raz unexpectedly on pens hurt my rank. TAA goal Mane assist was hard to take when I thought Mane dived.

Smooth - Puli scoring well when he came on. Made me feel somewhat better about playing him and benching TAA. 9 of my starters scoring points including 24pts from my Wolves contingent. Bruno and Rashford 1pters. 72pts overall and small green arrow.

Felt like this was a strange week. Decent, but could/should have been better. Brought in and played Long for Lascelles but benched TAA. Was going to bring in Pieters but went for Long's potential aerial threat vs Norwich. Had Foden's 8pts but was stung by not having Sterling. Martial(c) at least not a blank but needed much more from captaincy. Similarly with Salah, would have expected more than 5pts from him considering Pool scored 5 goals.

Captained Bruno for his second blank since the season resumed and previously captained him during his first blank!

Saiss no show allowed Trent to make a surprise appearance, although this was balanced out with AWB second half blocking Aurier.

Disaster, had 5 weeks of green arrows, gone from 350k to 80k since project restart and all was going well to close in on 70k until the Liverpool match.

TAA has done nothing for weeks, so decided to go with Stevens (2pts) instead and put TAA second bench (Greenwood 9pts first bench, came in for Silva).

So TAA has cost me 5000places. Now down to 85k.

Also decided to stick with Willian over Antonio for the past few weeks. That didn't work out.

So just to confirm, the disaster was a 5k drop as you got 9 points off the bench instead of 13?...

Sounds like a big win to only drop 5k to me, it’s a 4 point swing due to a player not playing.

Rough: Pulisic on the bench cost me a 3 figure gameweek.
Smooth: 95 points can't be scoffed at when my team was 87% template. The gap makes no sense!

Lying 85k after lock down using my WC in GW29.

Great week - 88 points, a 20k rise to 32k just in time and a transfer banked.

Smooth: Returns from Sterling (c), Pope, TAA, Boly, Salah, Willian, Jimenez, Ings and Greenwood. Fernandes blank also useful

Rough: Benched Foden over Willian for a 4pt loss and the Ings penalty miss was a 9pt swing

Came into this week with my TC and BB left (no FH) so put the TC on Ings...from then a real rollercoaster of emotions, but rough and smooth. But overall smooth with GW score of 80 and considering my other choice was Bruno TC. 12 points heck of a lot better than 3!!

Rough; Really needed a bit more out of Salah to catch the Sterling cappers.

Rough season for me. Took a hit to sell KDB and Greenwood to Martial (c) and Wood.

Didnt pay off and now I don't have KDB against Norwich.

Last remaining target was 100k for the season and am now 43 points off that mark.

On a better note, I'm a liverpool Fan.

            Rough:
            Fernandes(C) captain fail.
18 points left on bench (Digne 6, Willian 4, Foden 8).
But I still scored 66 and only slipped 500 places.

Before my disastrous wildcard in GW33+ I was heading towards the top 10k.
But after choosing Saint-Maximin, Wan-Bissaka and Alexander-Arnold instead of Martial, Stevens and Aurier in that wildcard I will now almost certainly finish outside the top 50k.
Too much money spent on defenders instead of on my midfield.
Martial has turned out to be pretty essential, and it was extremely difficult to bring him in later because of AWB clogging up one of my three United spots.

86 points and a green arrow to move from 40k -> 24k OR. Everyone returned except Vardy & Bruno.

Only rough is bench of Foden (8), Digne (6) & Lamptey (6).

Really happy as I've never finished in the top 150k before, first season as a FFS member.

            Rough:
            - Rashford captain
            - Saiss didn't play
            - Taylor still injured
            - Lundstram first defensive sub for 1 point
            - Pulisic didn't start
            - Giroud's goal stuck on bench

            Smooth:
            - Sterling further justifying the move from Salah few weeks back
            - Bruno fail as non-captain
            - Pulisic masterclass from the bench
            - Kept TAA (what a guy!)

Despite all above, somehow managed to cling on in Top 10k & head into GW38 with the mighty TrIpLe CaPtAiN chip active 🙂

Have you guys considered rest days before the final GW?

We're looking at the end of an extremely busy and tough fixture schedule since restart. We saw Fernandes look like he was about to drop dead last night. A few extra days rest can make a big difference and can make certain teams more appealing. Here's a breakdown on rest days.

          Arsenal (4) - (4) Watford
          Burnley (7) - (5) Brighton
          Chelsea (3) - (5) Wolves
          Crystal Palace (5) - (6) Spurs
          Everton (5) - (6) Bournemouth
          Leicester (6) - (3) Man Utd
          Man City (4) - (7) Norwich
          Newcastle (5) - (3) Liverpool
          Southampton (6) - (5) Sheffield Utd
          West Ham (3) - (4) Aston Villa

With this in mind, the biggest mismatch is LEI vs MUN. I really don't like United assets now looking at this. They already look tired and Leicester with 3 more days of recovery can really outrun United especially on current form. WOL vs CHE also seems to favor Wolves quite a bit. MCY vs NOR also quite large difference but with rotation and injuries, maybe not such a big deal. I think Pool are gonna be really out of it against Newcastle. 3 days rest, hangover after the Trophy ceremony etc. vs a 5 day rest NEW.

Spurs meanwhile look a nice bet with extra rest against Palace.

Fair point about Liverpool, but Newcastle are also struggling with injuries in defence and central midfield.

The fact that matches are Wed - Sun at worst with 3 full days in between (i.e. >72 hours) means that for most teams this is irrelevant. 7 days rest is not necessarily better than 4 but 4 is definitely better than 2, as zophar has pointed out in his articles several times. However I agree for MU because they've looked fatigued for a while now and it's developed into a more long-term thing that's affecting their play.

Interesting. Leaning towards Greenwood on FH. Not spending too much and seems the liveliest of the options

Thanks for the research. I will factor this into my team choice/transfer. Most helpful. That's what this site should be about and not vile abuse against others.

Currently have this squad with a FT and 0.5 ITB

            Henderson
            TAA, Doherty, Pieters
            Salah, KDB, Mahrez, Dilva, Martial
            Rashford, Ings

            Martin, Greenwood, Egan, Lascelles

My original plan was to do Doherty to VVD, but after watching Man Utd last night not sure if to ship Rashford.

I think bruno and pogba are going to have one of those training ground "collisions" this weekend.

Assuming Sterling plays up front and Jesus is benched, how does this look for a -4?

Jesus, KDB & Pulisic -> Sterling (C), D Silva and Kane
