How Man City’s key FPL assets fared ahead of Spurs’ fixture swing

Man City 1-1 Liverpool

  • Goals: Gabriel Jesus (£9.3m) | Mohamed Salah (£12.4m)
  • Assists: Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) | Sadio Mané (£12.0m)
  • Missed penalties: De Bruyne
  • Bonus points: Jesus x3, Salah x2, João Cancelo x1 (£5.4m)

CITIZEN OR KANE?

Fantasy Premier League managers may want to get another look at Manchester City’s attacking assets before pulling the trigger on a Gameweek 9 transfer.

Ahead of a swing of fixtures in Gameweek 10, Pep Guardiola’s men are still struggling to hit their exhilarating best this season, most recently in a 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday.

The last time they scored more than one goal in a Premier League match was the 5-2 home defeat to Leicester in Gameweek 2 which preceded a run of consecutive matches in which they found the net just once.

Despite threatening very little against Liverpool, Raheem Sterling (£11.5m), remains Manchester City’s highest-scoring Fantasy asset this season, with 33 points, but ranks as low as joint-43rd when compared against the entire player pool.

Such statistics are largely unheard-of during Guardiola’s tenure at Manchester City, who have now drawn three of their last five Premier League matches, as many as in their previous 70.

As a result, the Citizens do not look quite ready to command the full attention of Fantasy managers looking to replace Son Heung-min (£9.6m) or Harry Kane (£11.0m) when Spurs’ fixtures turn for the worst in Gameweek 9. Considering Hakim Ziyech (£8.1m) and Timo Werner (£9.4m) are showing some consistency as well as favourable fixtures of their own, Manchester City assets certainly need to improve soon.

JESUS AT THE CENTRE

Whether or not Manchester City can get back to the devastating attacking form we have come to know is likely to depend on Gabriel Jesus (£9.3m).

The Brazilian made a first start since Gameweek 2 on Sunday, slotting back into the void he left through injury, naturally fulfilling the role better than Sterling, Ferran Torres (£6.9m) and Mahrez have in his absence.

As a result, despite Liverpool’s attacking 4-2-3-1 formation, it was Manchester City who slightly edged their opponents in terms of looking the more dangerous outfit going forward.

That led to Jesus scoring an excellent goal on the turn and ensuring he has found the net in both of his Premier League starts this season.

Considering the price points of players Fantasy managers are likely to sell, it is certainly easier to replace Kane with Jesus than finding the money to upgrade Son to Sterling or Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m).

“He was really good. I didn’t expect he could sustain 90 minutes, but he did. He helped us. He made a fantastic goal – a good goal. It was a good result for him.” – Pep Guardiola

CANCELO BUTTON

JOTA THAT DOWN

Despite blanking against Manchester City, the long-term Fantasy credentials of Diogo Jota (£6.5m) were handed a boost on Sunday.

After scoring six goals in his four matches in all competitions previous to Gameweek 8, he has already attracted 8.5% but many of us have been reticent to secure the services of someone who is hardly a nailed-on starter at Liverpool.

In order to facilitate Jota in the team, Jurgen Klopp usually has to switch to 4-2-3-1 and station him on the right-hand side of attacking midfield, although this is a formation he has used sparingly in the calendar year of 2020.

But that could be about to change, when we consider the Liverpool manager has now set his team up with that shape in two of the last five matches in all competitions and has admitted that we could see it more often.

“When you can do it (start Salah, Mané, Firmino and Jota) against City then you can do it against other teams as well. It will not be our new, all-the-time [formation] but there are moments when we might use it. That’s very helpful for us. Usually, people know which system we play, that’s now water under the bridge. From now on we can play three or four different systems, which is good, and tonight it worked really well. We wanted to use the skills and the power of the four up-front in specific moments to cause City problems, that’s one thing. The other thing is that we all like to prepare a game in the way that we know exactly what the opponent is doing and Pep, I don’t think he knew we would play 4-4-2. It’s not important but it needed a while for City to adapt to it, that was the plan for today. We will not have used that the last time.” – Jurgen Klopp

Finally, there will be plenty of attention on the outcome of Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s (£7.4m) scan, following an enforced substitution at Manchester City.

“Trent will be out for England, that is clear. What he has, we don’t know, but he cannot play for England. He will not be the last and not the only one who Gareth [Southgate] will miss for this international break. He will have a scan tomorrow and then we will see.” – Jurgen Klopp

Manchester City XI (4-2-3-1): Ederson; Cancelo, Laporte, Dias, Walker; Gündogan, Rodri; Sterling, De Bruyne, Torres (B Silva 61′); Jesus.

Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Robertson, Gomez, Matip, Alexander-Arnold (Milner 63′); Wijnaldum, J Henderson; Mané, Firmino (Shaqiri 59′), Jota; Salah.

Hey all, 2fts done rinsed those non performers (TAA/Foden) right out of my team so now debating?

    Son (City) -> Bruno (C-WBA) (-4)?

It looks like a one week play as Bruno will probably become KDB the following week.
I suppose the captaincy is the big thing, if not Bruno I will go Salah V Leicester?

Unlike many owners, I am keeping Saiss as I own Kilman (one covers other)

    Have 2FTs and 2m ITB

    Martinez
    Kilman Robbo Chill
    Salah Son Grealish Zaha
    Kane DCL Bamford

    Forster Bissouma Saiss Mitchell

Hasnt risen yet but like that I have been able to keep a sizeable transfer cash reserve these last few weeks and Ziyech allows me to continue that.

What would you do and why? head is scrambled..!
Comes down to whether to prioritise Bruno over KDB really. Can't afford to hold onto Podence/Foden any longer, but Son/Kane can also go due to fixtures.

    4.0 ITB, 1 FT

    Martinez
    Cancelo Chilwell James (Justin, Mitchell)
    Salah Son Grealish Foden Podence
    Kane DCL (Brewster)

    A) - go without Rodriguez
    GW9: Foden > Bruno (C) (exact money)
GW10: Son, Kane > KDB, Martial (or cheaper) OR Ziyech, Vardy

    B) - go without Bruno & additional hit needed next week for Foden > KDB
    GW9: Son, Podence > Ziyech/Rodriguez (-4)

    C) - no hits needed but means sticking with Foden & Podence for another week
    GW9: Son > Bruno (C) (leaving 2.8 ITB)
    GW10 Podence > Ziyech/Rodriguez (0.4 ITB)

    D) - go without Bruno this week & additional hit needed next week for Son > KDB
GW9: Foden, Podence > Rodriguez, Ziyech (-4) (exact money)

    E) - go without Bruno
    GW9: Podence > Rodriguez
    GW10: Son, Kane > KDB, Vardy (-4)

    Bellerin KWP Dallas Saiss Mitchell

Here's a hypothetical question just to see how attacking people think Lamptey is, would you think of him as a good FPL option if he was a 5.0 mid? Ignore that Soucek is a bargain in that bracket and look at Lamptey in isolation, is he a decent 5.0 mid pick?
Same price as Solly March and more attacking threat I'd say?

    1. Fit_to_drop

He is good value - both as a defender or seen as a mid. Id have no prob with him as a 5th mid similar to what Saka was doing last season.

not better then a 6.0 forward (watkins, bamford) and wouldnt want a 3-5-2 with lamptey or as a playing 4th mid

Lampy xGI on the season would have him placed 6th in the list of 5m mids on xGI

      Order would be:
      1. March
      2. soucek
      3. Lookman
      4. Berge
      5. Dendonker

As lookman came in quite late, xgi per 90 lookman comes out on top and has an exspected goal involvement every 219mins vs Lampty 545mins.

So the answer is no, I have lookman and i hate him in my team

Yes he is and is also shooting from the edge of the box requiring good saves. Only a matter of time before he scores from open play. Better option than Coufal for me if money not an issue. Targett is good too but so many people have Martinez, they are precluded from buying another Villain.

Really lost out here, there's just too many options and combinations. Got 2 FT & 3.9 ITB

Players I'm considering: Martinez, Targett, Dias, Bellerin, Fofana, Ziyech, Salah, Bruno, Vardy, Kane, Watkins, Bamford
Players that need to go: Lloris, Mitchell, Foden. Possibly Wilson (depends on the injury)

    Main dilemmas:
    1) Martinez, Targett or Watkins for that 3rd Villa spot (stuck with their sub keeper)?
    2) Kane still worth getting with the fixture turn? Worth looking at Vardy instead or just keep the budget frontline?
    3) Ziyech or Bruno (or even Salah for the Liv double up)?
    4) Who for that last def. spot - Kilman, Veltman, a 4.5 or keep Mitchell?

    Lloris
    Robbo Digne Chilwell Coufal Mitchell
    Mane Son Grealish Foden Bissouma
    DCL Adams Wilson

Yeah Lloris & Foden is def. my plan for this week with Martinez & Bruno the obvious choice (can do it easily) but Ziyech looks like a really good option as well. And then there's the Villa problem if I want Watkins/Targett later - their fixtures look so good

Hi Guys, £0.7m ITB and 2 FT...

    McCarthy/Steer
    Robbo Chilwell Kilman Dallas Ferguson
    Salah Son Grealish Hames Bissouma
    Kane Watkins DCL

I've kept Ferguson as a bench fodder that will come back soon and at £4m I'm not worried.
I am thinking that a double up on Spurs may well see the points start to dry up, looking at their fixtures, so what to do?

I am tempted to bring Sterling or Jesus in from City (for either Son or Kane respectively) but Bruno looks like scoring in a generally average ManU team.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance

City horribly out of form so you could go Son > Bruno/Ziyech. Leeds seem to concede loads and Wolves have bad fixtures so switching Dallas to another 4.5 defender might be good too

Get KDB if youre getting city. You can more reliably captain him than Sterling or Jesus. Bruno also a great option, maybe paired with a city defense with the spare cash if going Bruno over KDB

Dont lose Dallas. In 2/3gws, Leeds have a great fixture run and I will be looking to get Dallas / Ayling. Leeds concede alot of goals in some games, but look at their games against city / wolves, they really restricted both good teams. I think Leeds will win several home games 2/3-0. Away games more likely to be 3-3 lol

    Recent Bruno buyers.

I know they play WBA (who gave Spurs a hard time in last GW) but after that they have Southampton, West Ham and City - 3 hard fixtures. Does that not temper your enthusiasm for buying Bruno? They are 3 hard fixtures on current form. Plus he is 1.5-2m dearer than other like assets. I think some people are looking at Bruno for just 1 game?

Though there are so many penalties this season so I dunno. Maybe Ole's new tactic will be "shoot at opponents' arms and get pens"

Are pens not exactly why he's worth the extra money? Shown by Salah and Kane recently, if you want a reliable captain option, you want them on Pens. There is always the chance a tight game gets settled by a pen. Utd likely to keep getting pens this year because of players like martial, rash and greenwood

Nope not just for 1 game. I've been holding off Bruno since the beginning of the season to see whether his output dipped from last years insane form. But I think the picture is pretty clear now - his numbers and output are consistent, and he is a season keeper. Im looking to buy either this week or next, I am a little put off because I dont think West Brom will be an easy fixture but Bruno doesn't have to play well to score points, he is on Pens, Free kicks, corners etc, he's proven he has bad games and yet will still be the hub of any goals Utd score. And Utd will score goals even if they end up losing to Southampton or West Ham

Saw someone did an epic long post as their head is scrambled an loads responded, hoping for the same:

    1.9 ITB, 1 FT

    Martinez (Forster)
    Robbo* Chilwell James (Justin, Mitchell)
    Salah Son* Grealish Rodriguez Podence*
    Kane* DCL (Brewster)

    * = plan on getting rid
im keen on KDB, Ziyech/Werner, Bruno, Cancelo..... plobably in that order

    options:
    1 Robbo & Podence > Cancelo & Ziyech (-4)
    2 Son > Bruno (C)
    3 Son & Kane > Werner & KDB (-4 or over 2 weeks)
4 Podence & Kane & Robbo > Watkins & Bruno (C) & Cancelo (-8) then Son for KDB next week

im really stuck on who i want to get in

Depends how you want to play it. Robbo has better fixtures coming up but you can't realistically get KDB in without downgrading. You can do an easy switch of Son>Bruno but then where do you go to get in KDB?

If your order of pref is KDB/Bruno/then city def. I'd hold 1 more week, get 2FT, move Robbo to Dias and then Son>KDB. Then look at rodriguez to ziyech. Can't get bruno+KDB unless major surgery to your team. But I would do your moves next Gweek when city start their run off with Burnley(H). (Id pick Dias over cancelo because despite cancelo looking fantastic, pep will guaranteed still rotate him with Mendy when hes back, Dias is nailed)

        appreciate the response

what about the last option but over 2 weeks:

this week: Kane & Podence > Watkins and Bruno (C) for -4

and next week i can decide about keeping Son, dropping him for Ziyech or even dropping him and Robbo for KDB & Dias/Cancelo

If youre happy to let Kane go in order to fund a Bruno+KDB team then that could work. Personally I wouldnt want rid of Kane at all, even through the tough fixtures. His points against Burnley and West Brom show he is still going to be main man in the tough games.

Having said that, Bruno+KDB are also FPL gold, and if you were going to move that way, now would be the time, Kane arguably wont be explosive over the tough period and KDB/Bruno can be.

Between Kane and Son though, no contest for me, Kane wins easily by end of the season.

Maybe next gw? Sideways move for this week and Son and KDB play each other, City def next week are Burnley(H) but this week Spurs will probably score.

Hi Guys, £1.0m ITB and 2 FT...

    Martinez; Forster
    Robbo; Chilwell; Coufal; Lamptey; Mitchell
    Salah; Son; Grealish; Rodriguez; Soucek
    Kane; DCL; Watkins

Rank currently 774K. Big green arrows in last two weeks after a very slow start.

Any suggestions on what to do over the IB? Thinking to use one FT and save the other so that I have 2 FT for GW10, when I'll probably be looking to bring in City players.

Not keen to drop Son or Kane now. Kane is long-term keeper this season I think.

Maybe just upgrade Mitchell or is that a waste?

    Cheers!

      think its a waste.

you could probably do Robbo & Soucek > Cancelo and Ziyech?

Yeah could do that. Would be a benching headache though with 8 strong forwards. Don't want to be benching Watkins given form and fixtures. Cancelo definitely on the radar though.

Solid team, honestly can't think of anything to do. Future decisions to be made about any City attack or Def.

Probably a waste upgrading Mitchell, will just be headache, already a headache with 4 good defenders already.

Cheers. Think you're right. Just not sure how to use the FT this week. Seems a shame to waste it. Definitely thinking to bring City players in for GW10. Hoping to see some improvements in their attacking stats though. Also weighing up Cancelo vs Dias.

If youre going to burn the xfer.. consider losing Soucek to 4.5 if that 0.4m makes a difference when considering KDB/Sterling/Vardy or any other premiums. As you have a playing front 8 with watkins. Personally I like soucek and have him in my front 8, however I need him to play to fund the Big 3 premium mids, Salah/KDB/Bruno. Seems backwards to lose watkins or DCL for upcoming runs so I wouldnt lose them.

Or even just drop mitchell to a 3.9m and bank a bit of extra cash. Dont need a 5th defender to be honest.

Solid team, right now I'd just go for cash with either Mitchell > 3.9 or Soucek > Bissouma.

Only other move I see is Robbo > City defender. Not that keen on Liv defenders anymore with their injury problems (I sold Trent before City but still have Robbo), while City look much more compact right now

But in any case, wait until next weekend in case of possible injuries/corona cases over the IB

Lads, should I use the international break and consider using my WC? What do you suggest for this lot?

    Mendy / Walton
    TAA / Lamptey / KWP / Dallas / Mitchell
Salah / Son / James Rodríguez / Grealish / Harrison
    Kane / DCL / Bamford

    Maybe TAA/Son for Chilwell/Bruno (- 4)?

      Just do Trent to Chilwell

Maybe too stubborn with hits (havent taken 1 all season).
I have bench of Saiss Brewster Mitchell.
Do you think its worth a hit to get Cancelo for Saiss?
It might not pay off right away but I wanna get Cancelo after next gw anyway and then it might be other issues to solve so its just postponing the problem not to jump on it. Other idea would be Cresswell/Coufal and play him instead of Lamptey.
Will wait of course but if no injuries...

Probably madness but is any keeping Foden?
Do you think there is a chance he could play some of those easier fixtures on the horizon? If he was I could have him and KDB/Sterling double up.

I could keep and always bench this week and play Lamphey too.

Or he is a complete dead option now?
