Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them, they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with regular Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to captaincy picks.

Our trio of top managers will be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season – and only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in full.

You can read all of their previous FPL Masterclass articles via the links above but this time we’ll be asking our panel: what do you focus more on – form or fixtures?

ZOPHAR SAID…

I am a ‘fixtures over form’ guy and I believe that a run of favourable matches often ‘creates’ form.

When a team/player encounters favourable opposition, they are afforded more opportunities to deliver points, which in turn leads to increased confidence and an upturn in form. This makes sense, as most sides often place greater emphasis on winning a fixture against, say, a Norwich City than they do a Manchester City. You would see more attacking set-ups from managers and players would also feel mentally that they are more likely to find the back of the net.

Very often, teams from the bottom half of the table rely solely on the ‘easy’ fixtures for their Premier League survival so we in turn as FPL managers need to target these games, too. I usually look for a block of five to six fixtures when I make my transfers.

However, I don’t think fixtures are as important for the premium assets, as they can deliver points usually against any opposition. My strategy with the premiums is usually to stick and forget, and ride out the tougher periods.

There are some instances, though, where form simply cannot be ignored. I did a piece for Scout last year where I tried to define ‘form’ and the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.5m) and Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) exemplified this in the tail-end of the campaign. Previously bit-part players, they had been afforded the chance to shine and circumstances led to them having an ideal state of mind to deliver a high level of performance which, though unsustainable over a long period, was ideal for FPL managers to capitalise on in the short term.

LATERISER SAID…

I am definitely a fixtures guy. I’ve always thought that fixtures breed form as premium assets from strong teams will more often than not tend to do well versus weaker opposition.

I’ve done many articles highlighting the same where the performance of premium assets versus strong, middling and obliging defenses is starkly different. You can see the same in the data here.

While selecting my team, I like getting premium assets even if they have a good fixture run for three to four Gameweeks, whereas my approach is a lot more long-term when it comes to mid-priced attackers and defenders. I generally see these mid-priced assets and defenders as long-term ‘value’-focused glue guys and I like to spend my transfers on attackers with a high upside.

Again, this is very subjective and depends on the context of the season (you can’t spend transfers on premium attackers if they are continuously performing at a very high level) and you’ll need to take a step back and assess.

Form, for me, is a little less predictable than fixtures but there is a case for trusting a player looking slightly more confident or avoiding a player who appears the opposite. On this note, one thing to look out for is whether there is a ‘role change’ for a player in a particular team. You need to keep an eye out for these tactical shifts and try jumping onto these players earlier than the crowd.

TOM SAID…

I’m all about the fixtures, especially for my budget and mid-price picks, and often find that form is driven by it.

Bad defences can suddenly become good defences if the fixtures fall kindly, which is exactly what happened with West Bromwich Albion for a period last season. The Baggies were terrible initially under Sam Allardyce, which coincided with a brutal schedule that included games against Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Leeds United and Arsenal. However, they improved shortly afterwards once the fixtures eased, keeping a respectable four clean sheets in seven matches. That’s something I benefitted from with Sam Johnstone and Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£5.5m) in my team but I was quick to sell once the fixtures stiffened again.

Despite that, sometimes you need to ride the wave with players like Jesse Lingard. The form isn’t necessarily sustainable and returns are bound to dry up eventually, but missing out on these types of players isn’t a lot of fun, and at the very least, you should make a few pounds from it.

With the premiums, I don’t mind playing them in trickier one-off fixtures, especially if they are on penalty-taking or set-piece duties. For example, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) returned against Man City, Man Utd, Leicester City, Spurs and Arsenal last season, so there was never a reason to sell.

      Similar here.
What I did… Write the players you want on paper. Form your team around them. I found the app a bit clunky, so I used the web version to set up my team initially as it’s easier to negotiate. After the first initial set up, tweaking becomes easier. Go with your gut and just do it for the enjoyment, when you stop enjoying it, do something else instead … https://fantasy5.com/football Good luck.

Footballing terms -they do actually..the ability to carry the ball and retain possession not many others can do that as good as him even at City

Footballing economics - Signing the poster boy of English football on a long term deal, merchandise, viewers etc would more than make up for transfer fees in the long run, hence a profitable investment.

        Good point on age there

This is succession planning likely in good part.

Interesting contrast with Liverpool who haven't done anything much in their front 6 for a couple of seasons. Fast forward there two years and I'm not sure what is left especially in midfield. Jota was a good signing but find it hard to see him picking up the mantle.

Not critical yet but could be this time next year.

I read that Sancho left for holidays less than 3 weeks ago, I doubt he’ll get much game time let alone start GW1, although he’s due back for training this week. Is there a consensus here that it is probably best to wait n see with Sancho?

I need to finalise my potential 4-5 City Bus Team in case Grealish changes colour soon.

Is there any way to improve this while keeping the same concept:

    Bachmann
    Shaw Digne Tierney
    Mahrez Grealish Foden Torres ESR
    Cavani Iheanacho

    Foster / Coufal, Kane, Ayling

I'm thinking Antonio might be better than Iheanacho, but I need players to not get injured so I'm not forced to make City transfers before I want to. I like Watkins, but he would need to be benched instead of sold during tough fixtures. I should be able to get more out of Nacho or Antonio, especially with good fixtures in GW6&7 When City play Chelsea & Liverpool (I can bench 1 or 2 of their least likely starters).

Cancelo is tempting, but there is great value elswhere in defence, and he's not in the rotation with the City forward players, which is what I want to try and benefit from with this concept.

Is this your regular team? Or just an alternate team for this concept?

You can only own them till you make a transfer, right? And assuming Kane and Grealish won't start right away(rarely anyone starts directly after joining under Pep), you will probably never have all 5 of these playing in the same gameweek. Is it worth the risk? I'm assuming you will start making transfers come GW3?

If this is an alternate team/you want to stick to this concept, then I would suggest having Watkins/Wilson. Nacho is not nailed and Antonio you can't trust with his injuries.
Also, agree with you, if doing this, would have the mids over Cancelo

      1. Deulofail
        • 9 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

This would be my regular team. So the plan would be to make no transfers until it's clear that the concept is failing. I don't know if it's worth the risk, but it should be fun 🙂

I think Nacho is likely to get minutes almost every game, and most of them from a start. Daka is more of a Vardy-type and I heard that Rodgers has indicated that this is more of a learning year from the bench for him, though I haven't checked the quotes. Wilson is one to consider, but he's not really a favourite of mine tbh. Cheers!

Dias as the only regular starter? Gundog more than Torres or foden.

      1. Deulofail
        • 9 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

        What's the Dias suggestion exactly?

The concept here is to benefit from the potency pf the non-regular starters. If I have a nailed Dias, I just have a nailed Dias, the same as anyone else. If I have a non-nailed player like anyone else, then I benefit from having their replacement in a game where they don't play, which other managers are less likely to have. I think it increases the value of one City attacker to own another one, essentially.

kinda want to do this - was looking at Dias, Cancelo, KDB, Grealish, Kane - forwards maybe not nailed and Tierney a bit too injury prone?

        • 9 Years

I could go for Bamford + DCL to make things easier.

I'm not sure about Dias unless you would want him in your team anyway. Cancelo pretty much the same. He's more rotation-prone, but not with KDB, Grealish Kane so much - not that I know Pep's tactics.

      1. Deulofail
        • 9 Years

You get their points. You have to sell City players, until you reach the limit of three, before making any other sales. Not sure if you have to sell 2 at once if you are 2 over the limit.

        1. Zladan

You do have to sell both. You won’t be able to confirm any xfers until your team meets the criteria of Max 3 from a team.

            • 9 Years

Yeah, it's more of a flaw of the individual players. I'll bench players who seem more likely to get cameos, and perhaps captialise on injuries and cameo hauls on occassion. I own the replacements, while other managers won't spend 2FTs to bring them in and out again for short-medium term injuries or changes in form, for instance.

      Price around 11.5m

Will do great and can see him firing Chelsea close to the title. Doesn't get bad injuries so the occasional Tuchel rotation will be the main problem.

      10.5 or 11.0 for about 200-220 points

How would you use 1 m in bank to improve this team? Toney to Antonio the obvious but want Toney for opening fixtures

    Sanchez
    TAA Digne Shaw Robertson
    Salah Bruno Raphinha Buendia
    Watkins Toney

    Foster White Brownhill Obafemi

Which players do you think are being currently overlooked? I'm thinking about players that are still great but for some reasons are currently flying under the radar or for example haven't yet made it in FPL but have huge potential. Personally I'm keeping an eye on:

Kane - If he goes to City then probably he will be one of the highest owned players, but if he stays at Spurs he's currently not very popular around here. And we're talking about a player who just scored his record highest 242 points (and that's playing for two different managers in an awful season for Spurs). If it was only about his goal-scoring potential, then I would probably wouldn't consider him as a great asset, but to that score contributed greatly also 14 assists. His goals chances creating skills earned him also the most bonus points last season (40), even more than Bruno has received (36). In my opinion we still have to consider him as a great premium option.

Son - There is not much to explain I think. I've seen somewhere a statistic that for the last 4 years he has consistently preformed at around 0.75 goal involvement per game. Although I would expect him to regress a bit in comparison to the last season (he has overperformed his expected stats considerably, and even though he is overperforming quite often, it's difficult to keep doing it at such level). I think he's still an interesting option, even at the higher price.

Martial - Still a great player that has performed historically at over 5 points per game. If he can win a place in the first team, I pretty sure he will score goals. Another question would be then if he is worth the 8m being clasified as a striker. Imho, if he would be nailed, then yes.

Werner - Great stats last season, If he can sort out he's finishing then in my opinion he will be a player we will need to consider. I think he still has huge potential and only thing he needs is just more confidence. Maybe he would be a more interesting prospect if he was classified as a midfielder, though.

Ings - His goals per minute were actually quite good, but that was his worst season in terms of xG/90 which is slightly worrying. If he can return the the level of 0.5 xG per game, then he could be an interesting option in FPL (only owned by 4.3% of managers).

Havertz - If Chelsea doesn't sign a striker, he's the one I'm the most bullish about. Under Tuchel he had some crazy high stats (0.82 xG per 90 minutes!). Only his minutes are a concern. But if he was somehow nailed on then he would be a no brainer for me.

Bamford - 194 points last season is a great score for a forward. If he could keep this up that would be a great value for 8m I believe. Seems like many predict a regression here, there is also Rodrigo who will probably play more (maybe they will play together though?).

    Thoughts?

Haha you'll be fine. I've gone without Salah every GW bar about 1 since his return to the premier league and my best seasons happened to be the ones he scored the most.

Kane isn't really being overlooked. There is just uncertainty over GW1 due to Euro tiredness & the Man City saga, as well as the fact Spurs play Man City in GW1. (Tricky for both point potential & personal reasons.)

Son - agree. Looks good, but again though GW1 fixture is the main reason.

Werner - He should hopefully perform better this season but given his history, and the amount of tricky fixtures we have until GW7, and his price, perfectly understandable not to start with Werner. He has been fluffing chances again in pre-season & it now looks like Lukaku is coming.

Ings - Hasn't looked fab in pre-season so far. As you say good stats but other forwards have better opening fixtures, and they are cheaper. Ings also has the recurring injury issues & is having a bit of a contract stand-off. It is seeming like he wants to move. JWP not being back yet does not help things either.

Havertz - similar to Wener. I prefer Havertz over Wener for his finishing & price, but our fixtures to start aside from GW1 aren't fab. Again, there is a Lukaku in the equation now.

Bamford - yeah, probably unfairly overlooked, but it is due to the fixtures. There is a concern over early substitutions now that we're not present at the beginning of last season, given Rodrigo's form & fitness. Don't mind watching the first couple of weeks or so whilst his ownership is lower. (Mind, still 18%).

Almost all the of City players are being overlooked - I mean, 11 of them have to start, right?

And at the other extreme, on FFS Bissouma has fallen right out of favour for no discernable reason.

          I get Bissouma.

Some people have double Brighton defence, or think they may move to it if it looks good & Bissouma locks you out of a forward option opposed to the other 4.5m mids.

Thoughts on this team. Too many uncertain starters?

    Bachmann
    TAA - Digne - Shaw
    Salah - Mahrez - Jota - Greenwood
    Antonio - Watkins - DCL
    Foster - Veltman - Brownhill - Hoever

    Another draft is with

Bruno - Harrison - Buendia in place of Mahrez - Jota - Greenwood

Pick a couple of must haves and build around them. Try to go with best fixture runs. Get budget GK’s and a couple of ‘put in and stay’ 4.5 defs.
When I saw Luke Shaw playing in the run to the Euros final with a strapped up wrist to aid his ruptured ligaments and nursing cracked ribs from the 1/4 finals … he’s a stayer. I try to pick players of that Calibre.
As Camzy says mock drafting is the way to go.

There is potential that Grealish coming in affects Gundogan's minutes.

Grealish could be playing a David Silva-esque roll.

However we don't really know at this point.

As 'must-have' as the similarly-priced Gundogan, Foden, Torres and Mahrez.
